Julio Cesar Williams in Siem Reap, Day #5
Today was Kulen Mountain day. I was really nervous and excited about this tip. Located in Phnom Kulen National Park which covers roughly 144 sq. miles. The holy mountain is an isolated chain at about 1,300 feet and rising to 1600 feet at its highest point. The park has many features and historical attractions and is extremely important to Khmer as it is the historical site where King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java in 800 CE.
Tumblr media
I took a tuk the nearly 30 miles out of Siem Reap to the mountain range. The mountain itself is so steep I had to leave the tuk and ride on the back of a moped which was the first time I had ever done so. I was quite nervous in the beginning as the roads alternate between pavement and dirt and are rocky in various areas. It was exhilarating once I got used to the ride.
Tumblr media
We stopped at a vista and I was treated to one of the most spectacular views I had ever seen. From the side of the mountain I caught a glimpse of the deep valley and villages below. It was so beautiful I had to stop and take some photos along with the many Khmer locals that had come up for the weekend.
Tumblr media
The mountain is sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and all along the road were various shrines and worshippers that had made the journey. As it was close to the New Years, there was extra attention given to the decorations and many people made the drive up the mountain to pray.
I first stopped at Kbal Spean which is known for its fertility carvings. King Jayavarman II diverted water away from the river to carve depictions of Vishnu his serpent Anata, and his wife Lakshmi along with other Hindu deities. It is commonly know as the river of 1000 lingas as they adorn the bottom of the river bed along with depictions of lotus flowers.
Tumblr media
The river gains holy significance as the water flows over these carvings, and along the sides of the river are nestled other buddhist shrines and I lit a couple of incense at one and said a few prayers for my friends back home.
Tumblr media
I continued up the mountain to see the big Buddha. I climbed the steps of Preah Ang Thom which houses a 26 ft. large statue of Buddha built in the 16th century. At the base of the large building are also smaller shrines to other bodhisattvas and gods.
Tumblr media
There were many people actively praying and chanting at the smaller shrines. Most also made the trek up the stairs to pray at the big Buddha, burn incense, and bang the sacred gong as they left the site.
Tumblr media
As I passed through, a small group of monks began chanting and I got to enjoy a moment in the resonance.
After banging the gong, I went to visit the waterfalls and cool off in the hot day. There were two waterfalls a small and a large one.
Tumblr media
At both crowds of people enjoyed themselves and swam in the shallows. It was a nice moment for me to relax and have a coffee. I knew that next I would visit Srah Damrei which was deep in the jungle.
Tumblr media
I rode for miles on backcountry roads into the the deep jungle. At times I wondered if we were lost because the road seem to vanish and reappear and there were no signs of people or markers except at random occurrences. I had no cellphone service and I was truly isolated, it was a feeling I had not felt in a long time. It was an odd mixture of a little fear and a little excitement at the newness of this experience. I did not know what to expect.
Tumblr media
The doubt and lack of certainty made for an exciting ride. My guide and I stopped a few times to chill in the jungle and to hydrate and talk about our lives. We even ate some of the jungle fruit that locals frequently foraged.
Tumblr media
After riding for what seemed like hours we finally made it to a small clearing. With help from a few locals who happened to be celebrating near the site we made the short walk from the trail to the actual site.
Tumblr media
Carved out of the sandstone were a huge elephant and a few lions that overlooked an amazing view of the valley below.
Tumblr media
I thanked our new found friends and lit some incense. I learned that they were even more ancient than Ankgor Wat and as was the sacred nature of the mountain were made roughly around the 8th or 9th century.
Tumblr media
The whole experience was amazing, everywhere you turned was a magical clearing that had a deep connection to spirituality and history.

We are responsible for the burning of Two Hana Bank ATM machines, the Hana Bank office building, a capitalist-owned advertising videotron, and a motor vehicle belonging to the Indonesian National Army. The arson occurred after a space occupation carried out by demonstrators in the aftermath of a demonstration against the passage of the Indonesian National Army Law (TNI law), the arson occurred in Bandung, West Java on Friday night 21/03/2025. The action carried out by the demonstrators in front of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRD) was not ignored at all by anti-riot police, despite the throwing of molotov cocktails, propane, stones and firecrackers into the veranda of the building. Until in the end, we chose direct action by burning at several points above. We are completely beyond the authority of the language of the state and capitalism, we are irrationality, we are a form of the illogicality of the authority of the language itself. We are one of the informal organizations of the end of the world who do not believe in the coming of enlightenment for tomorrow, because for us the future is a new form of suffering. We are a fire that devours entire city buildings at night. We do not believe in the revolution of the left and other social anarchists. We are writers and poets, insurrection is poetry, poetry is insurrection. Death to The State! Death to The National Army! Death to an Entire Civilization! Burn The World Bank! Long Live The Conspiracy of Cells of Fire! Long Live The Free Association of Autonomous Fire! Long Live FAI/IRF Long Live Anarchy!
Tumblr media
On March 20, anarchists and other protesters held simultaneous demonstrations in at least 19 cities in Indonesia in response to the Indonesian Parliament enacting the revised Indonesian National Armed Forces Bill (UU TNI), which paves the way for a return to the authoritarianism of the military dictatorship under Suharto. The protesters confronted extreme police repression in the streets.
These events are part of the same wave of authoritarianism that is sweeping the world. All of our struggles are interlinked.
Our Indonesian comrades are calling on us to engage in solidarity actions, including demonstrating at embassies.
For more background on the context in Indonesia:
http://crimethinc.com/indonesia2024
In the words of our Indonesian comrades:
We rise, not in silence, but in raging fire.
A wildfire of defiance, fueled by the love of freedom,
and the unyielding spirit of those who refuse to kneel.
This is not just a fight for Indonesia,
but a battle cry for every soul who dares to dream
of a world unchained, unbowed, unbroken.
We reject the chains of militarism,
the cold steel of authoritarianism,
and the suffocating grip of neo-fascism.
We are the voices of the oppressed,
the hands that build barricades,
the hearts that beat for anarchy—
the chaos, and the beautiful disorder of liberation.

The Kapampangan history will consist of the Luzon Empire, also known as the ‘Kingdom of Tondo’. There is a popular belief that the native Kapampangan are direct descendants from Central Java or from the Malang Region. According to historians, the Java or Malayan that used to settle along the banks of the Rio Grande de Pampanga, currently recognized as the Pampanga River, before the Spaniards came. The natives refused to submit to the authority of the colonizers, while Martin de Goiti discovered the Macabebe; wherein, he intended to reduce the number of native people and conquer the place.
On December 11th of 1571, Pampanga was divided into two towns and was dissolved into districts under Spanish authority. During that time, Pampanga has been considered one of the richest places in agriculture within the country, along with Manila and certain provinces. In fact, the Spaniards made the decision of turning it into a province of governmental control and taxation due to its rich cultivation, fishery, labor, and forestry industries.
On the other hand, the City of San Fernando, aka the ‘Heart of Central Luzon’, served as the Provincial Capital of Pampanga and Regional Center of Central Luzon due to its location. In the year 1754, the town was discovered and was named after the King Fernando IV of Spain. In 1892, Angeles City was called the ‘Bario Culiat’ and was separated from San Fernando. In the same year, the country’s national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, made a stop-over in the town to find recruits as part of his mission. The Philippine Revolutionary troops that were led by General Antonio Luna burned the casa municipal that was made to be useless when the American forces approached the town in 1899.
In 1904, the Pampanga provincial government was transferred to San Fernando from Bacolor. Pampanga Sugar Development Company began to operate in 1921, which is the first Filipino company that financed sugar that became the catalyst for the exponential growth of San Fernando. However, it did not end the local’s hardship in dealing with the supervision and occupation of the Japanese Imperial Army in 1942. Not to mention, the Kapampangans are proven to be brave and can quickly stand on their feet as they are able to recover from the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991; it was a rough time for them as well as the other people residing in other provinces. Due to that, the Makatapak Festival has come to the surface– symbolizing the history of how difficult the duration and aftermath of the event were. Lastly, the year 2001 has been when San Fernando gained back the light and life of the town and became recognized as the 99th City of the Republic of the Philippines.

17 Curious Facts About Cincinnati’s Coney Island
For almost a century, the “Coney island of the West” was the reigning Cincinnati amusement park, despite tough competition from Chester park in Spring Grove Village and the Lagoon in Ludlow, Kentucky. Now operating as a water park and concert venue, memories of the Old Coney abide.
It Started Out As An Apple Orchard Coney Island got its start as Parker’s Grove. In the early 1880s James Parker started to rent out his apple orchard on the banks of the Ohio River as a picnic grove, eventually adding a dining hall, dancing hall, and bowling alley.
For Many Years, ‘Coney Island’ Was Just A Nickname In 1886, James Parker sold his apple orchard to a couple of steamboat captains who recognized the opportunity to collect a lot more fares by shipping customers upriver from Cincinnati. The park got a new name: “Ohio Grove.” The new owners advertised Ohio Grove as “The Coney Island of the West,” after the well-established Coney Island in Brooklyn. It was years later that the resort was officially named “Coney Island.”
Why Didn’t The Brooklyn Coney Island Sue? Didn’t Cincinnati’s amusement park steal its name from a famous New York resort? You betcha! Then why didn’t they sue? The New York Coney Island is not actually an amusement park, it’s a neighborhood. At its height, the New York Coney Island was home to three major amusement parks - Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park – along with a plethora of independent amusements, none of them named Coney Island. Cincinnati’s Coney Island didn’t copy from another amusement park and therefore got away with grand larceny.
The Coney Island Run Was Bad Luck For Steamboats Although most people remember only the Island Queen, over the years nearly 20 steamboats made the Coney Island run. The Mary Houston ran only one season before succumbing to the 1893 ice breakup; the Commonwealth rammed a towboat in 1895; the Princess was crushed when the Ohio froze over in 1917, the Morning Star burned with the original Island Queen in 1922, the Island Maid burned at Madison, Indiana, in 1932, and the second, most-remembered Island Queen exploded in Pittsburgh in 1947.
Tumblr media
Coney’s Pleasures Were Not For Everyone It took a concerted effort to open Coney Island’s gates to Cincinnati’s African American residents. The amusement park was totally segregated until 1955 and the Sunlite Pool and Moonlight Gardens did not admit Black people until 1961.
A Narrow Decision On Integration In 1953, Ethel Fletcher and her three children were denied admission to Coney Island because they were Black. With the assistance of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, she sued and won. However, the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas refused to certify the case as a class action. The decision applied to Mrs. Fletcher, alone. Coney Island was required to admit her, the court ruled, but could deny admission to her children, her husband or to anyone else.
A Really, Really Big Pool Sunlite Pool is the world’s largest recirculating swimming pool. It covers more than two acres. For many years, Sunlite Pool was filled entirely from artesian wells drilled on the property. Today that well water is supplemented by city water originating in the Ohio River.
Coney Island Helped Inspire Disneyland Walt Disney and his brother, Roy, visited Coney Island in June 1953 to gather ideas for the California amusement park they planned. They were impressed by owner Ed Schott, and invited him to advise on their project. At a Cincinnati news conference, Disney said Schott’s advice had been “very valuable” in making Disneyland a success.
Rainy Birth, Rainy Death It rained torrentially the first day Ohio Grove opened in 21 June 1886 and it rained torrentially the day Coney Island closed on 6 September 1971.
One Explosive Act Throughout the summer of 1948, one of the attractions on Coney’s Mall was Captain Leo Simon, “The Man Who Blows Himself Up.” Capt. Simon would seal himself in a box with a lit stick of dynamite and emerge unscathed from a cloud of smoke.
Al Hirt Sets A Moonlite Gardens Record The one-night attendance record at Moonlite Gardens was set 18 July 1964 when Al Hirt packed in 6,266 dancers. Hirt, riding on the success of his instrumental hit, “Java,” broke the previous record of 5,564 set by Ralph Marterie’s Orchestra on 25 July 1953.
A Twelve-Acre Wading Pool Lake Como was excavated and filled in 1893, offering rides in gondolas. It took so long to fill that it was nicknamed “Colonel Brooks’ Duck Pond” by local wags. Most people could walk across Lake Como if they wanted. Completely filled the lake is only three to four feet deep, all the way across. Lake Como covers an area of 12 acres.
Ghost of the Roller Coasters If you’ve ever felt a sort of swooping motion while enjoying a performance at Riverbend Music Center there might be a reason. The  concert pavilion sits on land that once belonged to Coney Island and was occupied by the Wildcat and the Shooting Star roller coasters.
The Inevitable Floods Every autumn, as Coney Island closed for the winter, the hand-carved Grand Carousel horses were dismantled and moved to high-ground storage in the attic of Moonlite Gardens to keep them dry when the Ohio River inevitably flooded. The Grand Carousel was made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1926 and was moved to King’s Island in 1972.
Old Coney Is Haunted There are multiple reports of a man, sometimes accompanied by a woman, gazing from the balcony at Moonlite Gardens. The man wears old-fashioned clothing. Witnesses, when shown photos of George Schott, Coney Island’s one-time owner, agree he is the man they saw. Schott died at the park from a heart attack in 1935.
Davy Crockett Killed Coney Island In 1968, Fess Parker, the actor who portrayed both Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone, announced plans to build a huge “Frontier World” amusement park in Northern Kentucky. The owners of Coney Island, landlocked and unable to expand, realized the competition would be fatal and quickly negotiated a merger with Taft Broadcasting. Plans for the “New Coney Island” at Kings Mills, Ohio, made headlines in 1969. Coney Island closed in 1971 and Kings Island opened in 1972.
A Gigantic RV Park? Before Taft Broadcasting reopened “Old Coney” in a limited capacity in 1976, the company gained approval from the Cincinnati City Planning Commission for a zoning change that would have allowed parking for 300 to 400 recreational vehicles and camper trailers.

Martha Christina Tiahahu - National heroine of Indonesia
Martha Christina Tiahahu (1800-1818) was a freedom fighter who rose against the Dutch colonial government in Indonesia. She is nowadays celebrated as a national heroine.
She was born in Abubu village on Nusalaut Island. Her mother died while she was still a child and she was raised by her father, captain Paulus Tiahahu. She joined the resistance movement on Nusalaut Island at the age of 17 with her father’s guerrilla unit. They backed the rebellion started by freedom fighter Pattimura against the colonial power.
Martha Christina fought in several battles, notably one where she and her troops burned Duurstede Fortress to the ground. Some accounts have her fighting with a spear while others state that she hurled stones at the enemy when her troops ran out of ammunition.
She was ultimately captured alongside her father and other freedom fighters such as Pattimura himself. Her father was sentenced to death, but Martha Christina escaped punishment due to her young age. After her father’s execution, she hid in the forest and kept fighting against the Dutch.
In December 1817, she was ultimately caught by the Dutch alongside former rebels. They were deported to Java to work in the coffee plantations there. Martha Christina fell ill during the journey and refused food and medication. She died on January 2 1818 and her body was thrown in the Banda Sea.
Martha Christina is today celebrated as a national heroine. Petals are thrown in the Banda Sea for her death anniversary. Monuments to her were also erected and she is remembered in her community as a kabaressi (valiant) woman. Her name was also given to a social organization and a women’s magazine.
