Menyambut Sang Juru Selamat.
Setelah dua tahun sebelumnya sukses menghadirkan musisi-musisi rock mancanegara seperti Melee, Mew, Secondhand Serenade (2009) kemudian disusul oleh Arkarna, MuteMath, Stereophonics, Wolfmother, Smashing Pumpkins (2010).
Doa dikabulkan.

Tak lama ia menyapa jamaahnya dengan ramah, “Hi Indonesian how’s your day?” Namun, para jamaah tetap khusyuk mengucapkan tiap bait-bait kata. Lagu-lagu dari dekade 1990-an seperti Ode To my Family, Just My Imagination, Can’t Be With You, Salvation, Promises, juga dibawakan dengan sangat wakxjdwahxdsfuz malam itu.
Terima kasih Wahai Sang Juru Selamat, The Cranberries.

Blood Red Shoes Live in Jakarta
July 22nd at Java Rockin'land, Pantai Carnaval, Jakarta.
By: Shafira Sahara
Last year, I came to the annual rockfest Java Rockin'land full of hope and expectations for Smashing Pumpkins. And it is safe to say that they not just disappoint, but whole-heartedly ripped my soul to the soaking ground.
So this year I play with my safe expectation. I refused to deal with the big headlines. From Cranberries to Helloween, I turned my head to this little duo from England called Blood Red Shoes.
Because, simply, I am in the mood for something raw, organic, yet spitefully hostile.

So there I go. One Friday evening, I set up my own little gig. Open the night with the more-popular We Are Scientists, and close it with Blood Red Shoes. That way, I can go home before the Jared Leto mob attack the venue. As I came in late, my favorite We Are Scientists songs had been sang.. So I decided to book my place at the very front for Blood Red Shoes.
The crowd at this stage was not as packed. But I think my enthusiasm filled up the space. They were scheduled to play at 9.45 pm but didn't start until 10ish. Waiting with bated breath, I was sweating even before the duo came up.
And then they appear on stage. Steven Ansell on drums and Laura-Mary Carter with her electric guitar. You might think they resemble The White Stripes - at least, the European version of them - but you're strongly mistaken. On a skill level, the two bands are very different. Blood Red Shoes are far less technical and more rhythmical and raw. (That doesn't mean my ear don't bleed love for Jack White's amazing sound)
With short greetings, the band went straight into action with Keeping It Close, a single from their second album 'Box of Secrets'. Ansell hit the drums like his life depended on it. The tempo was hot and increasing until the chorus hit: "Break the bones you call your own!"
At that exact moment, I yearned to break my bones banging my head so hard on a wall.
Next, Light It Up started. It slows the mood for a couple of minutes. That is, before the chorus was played, then it felt like an anthem. The screaming, the simple calling and syllables. The song in itself, with a constant drumming rhythm and guitar melody and an intense chorus, has the potential to stand right beside a Smashing Pumpkin's single. Albeit it will need a more brilliant writer and more instruments than two.
The more alt rock feel continued with the next two songs, Heartsink and Say Something, Say Anything. Ansell's hoarse screams had also been dominated the vocal so far. But then the soft-rock rhythm to When We Wake ensued. This simple heartfelt sound increases in intensity by the minute that you will forced to feel a rush of emotions from nowhere. In this, it was Laura-Mary's voice all the way through. Her calmness was revealed in her unflustered vocal, though on the contrary, her fingers were vigorous to the movement of the melody. Coupled the skills with her man-sized Led Zeppelin shirt, tight short and boots, at the end of the song a chorus of "I LOVE YOU LAURA-MARY CARTER!" was heard.
And I completely approved. This girl oozes sexiness without even trying at all.
From this onwards, Carter's voice materialized. The soft mood was brutally erased with the classic grunge sound of It Is Happening Again, continued with the more modern feel of This Is Not For You.
At this point, I was bathed in sweat. The thing about Blood Red Shoes was, even though there were only two relatively skinny persons on stage with a drumset and a guitar, it doesn't matter that much. What matter was the way they play, and the way their passion was heard and felt and lived through every beat they play, and how you feel what they were feeling.
The crowd was wildest during their most recognized single: It's Getting Boring By The Sea. I was dancing so wild that my brother moved away a few steps from me (either to not get slapped or to temporarily deny his relation to me). It saddened me at this point that the cool effects heard on their digital sound were not completely applied in their live performance. I like raw music but often, effects make the sound way more memorable.
Yet my favorite was played towards the end. A single from their first album called I Wish I Was Someone Better. The lyrics repetition will stick itself in your head. Whichever you prefer, to sing "I made a mistake" or "I made him a steak", at the end of this song you'll wish to make better mistake or better steak.
Overall, Blood Red Shoes was more entertaining than I'd ever imagine. They played the set for about one hour and a half, and it satisfied the living out of me. After a whole year of listening to amazingly seamed songs with complex effects and beat, it is such a refreshment to hear a raw taste like this one.
It was Ansell's shameless angst and Carter's silent fury that gets into your bones. And the fact that they don't stop, and the energy don't go steamed up with the heat, makes this a thorougly, desperately-needed killer night. Brilliant.
