The Canadian Country Music Association Awards have wrapped for another year after a HUGE show in Calgary, AB on Sunday night.
Hosted by Dallas Smith and Billy Ray Cyrus, the broadcast was packed fantastic performances and big award wins. Smith lead the way for the men with wins for Male Artist of the Year and the coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy. And on the women’s side, Tenille Townes had a coming out party as she won Female Artist of the Year and added Single of the Year to the Songwriter and Video of the Year award wins she had already picked up over the weekend for her #1 single, Somebody’s Daughter.
The Apple Music Fans’ Choice award was presented to Brett Kissel, who called it the Stanley Cup in the industry and must have felt extra special in his home province. Group or Duo of the Year went to The Washboard Union, who dressed to match and may have been the best dressed trio in the building. The Reklaws won Album of the Year for Feels Like That in a moment that left them nearly speechless. And Jade Eagleson, winner of the 2017 Emerging Artist Showcase at Boots & Hearts won his first CCMA Award, taking home the Rising Star award.
But as much as this was an event to celebrate the winners, this was a night to celebrate Canadian country music. The performances throughout the show put a spotlight on some of the genres biggest stars. Bookended by Tim Hicks and Paul Brandt, the entire set on Global TV was a blast.
There were some great collaborations during the show as well. Meghan Patrick and Mitchell Tenpenny singing Wild As Me hit us in the feels. Dallas Smith with Dean Brody and MacKenzie Porter got us excited for the Friends Don’t Let Friends Tour Alone shows coming up. And Aaron Pritchett and Jess Moskaluke joined by Charlie Major to celebrate his induction into the Hall of Fame was a great moment.
Flip through the slideshow of performance photos to relive some of the moments.

Congratulations to all of the award winners, the nominees, and a round of applause to all of the performers at the 2019 CCMA Awards show. It was a great night of celebration for the Canadian country music community and made memories that a lot of people will remember for a long time.

The Week of July 24th On Repeat
“Jaaaay, where are you? Come home for some treats, Jay.” Nightly, Camden, around 7-10pm
“The next station is Dalston Kingsland. Please keep your luggage with you at all times and report anything suspicious to a member of staff.” Daily, every overground train passing through Dalston Kingsland
Listen to the recording here: https://youtu.be/e7qDFI37-dk
The Dalston Kingsland one gets me because this warning (I’ve ridden the whole line end to end) only comes up at this station. How does this repetition effect how I view this station and the subsequent area? For one I am automatically put on guard; suspicious that I’m entering a bad area. As a result how does this effect how I view those entering the train at this station—particularly those that don’t look like me—does this repetitive recording encourage racial thinking subliminally? Since thinking this I cannot help but feel a bit disgusted at myself and TFL every time this recording comes on over the intercom.
This also got me thinking that before better restoration techniques and science, old paintings were literally painted over (aside from a somewhat recent restoration in Spain https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-19349921). For example the Mona Lisa is thought to have originally had eyebrows and eyelashes but were lost over time due to poorer restoration techniques. (cropped people out of these photos haha sorry) but I really love these photos from Showcase Live. It was one of the most emotional gigs I have ever been to, saying goodbye to Jay broke my heart. I apologise to anyone who saw me crying that night, but I literally just couldn't cope with the fact that the boy that means so much to me, suddenly won't be part of my life any more.

The Canadian Country Music Association Awards took over Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre on Sunday night for a celebration of excellence.
From start to finish the night’s show put a bright spotlight on the outstanding talent in the genre, but it shined especially bright on the women of Canadian country music. From the opening moments of the show, with Jess Moskaluke, Kira Isabella, and Madeline Merlo paying tribute to host and legend, Shania Twain, it was on, and it continued throughout the show.
During the CCMA Awards show (and the Saturday night gala) the men of Canadian country music were also celebrated with awards, cheers, and praise. Dallas Smith took home his first Male Artist of the Year award, The Washboard Union added a Group of the Year award to their Roots Artist of the Year honour, and Brett Kissel took home his fifth Interactive Artist of the Year award.
But it was the women that captured the attention and admiration of the Hamilton audience, and viewers across Canada and around the world. Live performances including the Shania tribute, Jessica Mitchell’s Heart Of Glass, Lindsay Ell’s Criminal, Meghan Patrick’s Walls Come Down, and a medley of Terri Clark hits to celebrate her induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame were all highlights. These women showed everyone that we are in the middle of a resurgence, that they deserve the spotlight, and that they are ready, willing, and able to take the next steps in their careers, and in support of each other.
In her acceptance speech for her second consecutive Female Artist of the Year award, Meghan Patrick told the world “To all the girls: we are killin’ it this year. And I feel like we’ve bonded this year, and I’m so proud of all of you, and this is for all of us!”, we couldn’t agree more.
The spotlight and recognition of Canadian women continued and proved Meghan right when Jess Moskaluke won Album of the Year for Past The Past. The award joins Moskaluke’s Juno for her last album, Kiss Me Quiet, and her three Female Artist of the Year awards (2014, 2015, 2016) in recognizing her incredible talent and hard work in her career so far.
But that wasn’t all.

The Fans’ Choice Award was up for grabs with 10 nominees (Gord Bamford, Dean Brody, Chad Brownlee, Tim Hicks, High Valley, James Barker Band, Brett Kissel, Jess Moskaluke, Dallas Smith, Shania Twain) who all have great fanbases and deserve to be recognized. However, there could only be one winner, and when all the votes were counted, the award went to Shania Twain!
It marked the fourth time that queen Shania took home the CCMA Fans’ Choice title (1996, 1998, 1999) and it was a great moment in an amazing evening.
The atmosphere inside the arena was more concert than award show, which was perfect. It was also the result of a well put together program that featured some of the hottest stars in Canada (we loved the performances by Dallas Smith & Terri Clark, Brett Kissel with Serena Ryder, The Washboard Union, The Reklaws, James Barker Band and more) – plus a bonus appearance and performance from international country star, Keith Urban. The energy, cheers, and volume from the fans in the seats and in front of the stage were a great indication of the support that the genre enjoys coast to coast. If you haven’t been to a country show in Canada, we implore you to do so. Soon.
We can’t wait to see how the country fans in Calgary plan on topping this show and weekend in 2019!
Congratulations to all of the nominees and winners at the 2018 Canadian Country Music Association Awards. Check out photos from the show, the full list of winners from the 2018 CCMAs, and performance videos from CBC Music’s YouTube channel.

This man is one of my favourite people in the whole world. He made my day at Soccer Six. The simple fact that he saw me, and did some weird scream/shout, then said "it's because I'm happy to see you." was the most perfect thing. Simple things like that make me smile, and tbh he was an absolute cutie the whole day (even when I got drunk and probably annoyed him a bit haha oops)
