Hilaire et ma belle mère ont été aussi très sensibles à ma situation sans oublier quelques bons amis et de bonnes amies qui même à distance se sont faits sentir de façon considérable. Ma femme ,mes enfants , mes belles soeurs et ma belle mère ont tout donné en offrant leur amour , leur affection et leur vibrante attention.

No estamos ante un documental convencional, no es un estudio ni un ensayo académico, sino la mirada de un artista que desde siempre ha vivido con el cine.   Jean Renoir, Robert Bresson y Jean-Pierre Melville —con quien Tavernier trabajó como asistente— son solo algunos de los autores que tienen un espacio en este homenaje, que el realizador calificó prácticamente como una autobiografía: "Lo que quise hacer es una película que hable de lo que yo siento frente a ciertas películas y además confrontar eso con ciertos recuerdos de adolescencia y juventud".   Es tanta la experiencia de Tavernier en la materia que aquí es capaz de narrar, desde su invención, los capítulos más importantes de un cine que abarca todos los estilos, pasando por el melodrama, la comedia y la época cumbre del film noir; además de los momentos más críticos de la industria francesa.   La recapitulación que logra es tan personal como extensa: con 582 extractos de 94 películas y más de 750 notas de prensa y documentos consultados, fueron necesarios seis años de investigación y 80 semanas de montaje para finalizar el largometraje. La mayor parte del material fue reunido gracias a la coproducción de las dos compañías más antiguas en Francia: Gaumont y Pathé.   Por si fuera poco, una serie de televisión complementaria está en proceso de producción; con 10 episodios de una hora cada uno, el cineasta buscará reivindicar aquellos momentos y autores que no fueron incluidos en el documental. Con este homenaje, el francés pretende ir más allá de los cineastas y darle un lugar a todos aquellos que han contribuido al desarrollo fílmico en su país. Personalidades como el actor Jean Gabin, los músicos Maurice Jaubert y Joseph Kosma o el decorador Alexandre Trauner son también dignos de su admiración.   Críticos como Jordan Mintzer de The Hollywood Reporter alaban el filme recopilatorio, señalando que desmiente la idea que popularmente se tiene del cine francés, visto como un arte individualista y autoritario por parte de sus directores.   Bertrand Tavernier es tanto cineasta como cinéfilo y no es ajeno a realizar documentales, pues a través de éstos ha tocado temas tan variados como la guerra entre Francia y Argelia en los años cincuenta o el movimiento migratorio en la ciudad de Lyon. Handlung

„Le Havre, in den 30er Jahren: Nach seiner Flucht erreicht der Deserteur Jean ausgehungert und mittellos die Hafenstadt in der Normandie. In einer kleinen Strandkneipe bietet ihm der Besitzer namens Panama Unterschlupf und eine ausgiebige Mahlzeit im Nebenzimmer an. Dort macht er Bekanntschaft mit der schönen Nelly. Die beiden verbindet nicht nur eine traurige Vergangenheit, sondern auch die Suche nach Zuneigung und Liebe.

Am nächsten Morgen, bei einem gemeinsamen Spaziergang entlang der Hafenpromenade, wird Nelly von dem Verbrecher Lucien und seinen Leuten bedrängt. Kurzum schlägt Jean die Männer nieder und ohrfeigt den eingeschüchterten Lucien.

Als Jean wieder die Strandkneipe besucht, scheint sich für ihn das Schicksal zu wenden: Ein lebensmüder Maler hinterlässt ihm nach seinem Selbstmord Kleidung, einen Pass und Geld. Diese karge Ausstattung genügt Jean, um aus Frankreich zu fliehen. Noch am selben Tag schreibt er sich in die Passagierliste eines Frachtschiffs nach Venezuela ein. Inzwischen ist er Nelly nähergekommen und die beiden verbringen eine leidenschaftliche Nacht miteinander.

Nelly, die von der Polizei verdächtigt wird, ihren ehemaligen Liebhaber ermordet zu haben, will Jean ziehen lassen und später nachkommen. Doch der gekränkte Lucien sehnt sich nach Rache und verfolgt das Paar. Als Jean sich vor seiner Abreise von Nelly verabschieden will, muss er mit ansehen, wie ihr Vormund Zabel sie zu misshandeln versucht. Jean verliert die Kontrolle und tötet Zabel. Das Paar begibt sich auf den Weg zum Hafen, doch Lucien lauert ihnen dort bereits auf ...“ [ARTE]

Das Drehbuch folgt dem gleichnamigen Roman: Le Quai des brumes von Pierre Mac Orlan (1882-1970, Pseudonym für Pierre Dumarchey), der erst 1988 zuerst in deutscher Sprache erschien (DNB). Das französische Original kam bereits 1927 bei Gallimard heraus (Wikipedia (fr)).

Ich habe heute den Film auf ARTE gesehen, wo man eine rekonstruierte Fassung von 2012 zugrundegelegt hat (erschienen bei Studiocanal). Die deutsche Synchronisation stammt von 1970, die für eine ZDF-Austrahlung erstellt wurde.
