Jenny Taft vs Skip Bayless.....Was Everything I Wish Live TV Could Be
Tumblr media
See, as much as I rail on about live sports television coverage, one of the things that I still like about it is that it’s live. So every now and again, you get these off-the-cuff moments that clearly weren’t meant to happen.
Skip Bayless has had many such moments, including the time Jalen Rose exposed him for averaging 1.4 points in high school, and he was on Fox Sports Undisputed again, absolutely trashing Dallas Cowboys head coach, Mike McCarthy and during this rant, he took a shot at McCarthy’s weight, which triggered his co-host, Jenny Taft to go on an absolutely legendary tangent that clearly and hilariously, was not supposed to be part of the show.
Uh, fat shaming is something I only do to Jason Whitlock but I won’t say that Skip Bayless is completely wrong.
If a guy is in a job where he’s going to demand peak fitness and physical performance, it’s not unreasonable that some people would say, “hey bro, do you hold yourself to the same standard in your life?” as in “do you understand, from personal experience, what you’re asking me to do?”
Stuff like this, is why former players do kind of, do better as coaches, and this doesn’t invalidate any coach that isn’t some lean, muscular machine because Andy Reid exists.
As for Jenny, time is up for her, She is not long for the show. I don’t know what her contract status is, but she better hope that Mike McCarthy’s weight is a hill worth dying on because a contract extension isn’t likely anymore.
Sports television co-hosts, walk a fine line, ESPN’s Molly Qerim is what happens when that line is crossed far too many times and Jenny’s record is actually pretty good but man, this really was not important and apparently it’s a trigger for her.
Nice to know.
Tumblr media
As for Skip, bro, it was not his place to make that criticism but rather than get up in arms, it leads me to question how tied-in to the Dallas Cowboys, Skip really is.
He’s said some really egregious things in the last 2 years when it comes to the Cowboys, including the way he criticized Dak Prescott for talking about his struggles with mental health. Skip called it “a sign of weakness”.
There are hundreds of ways to follow the Dallas Cowboys. Some of them are fan driven channels, blogs, sites, that are every bit as arrogant and optimistic as the Cowboys team itself. Few of them verge into the salacious, low hanging fruit-esque, low blow-heavy, distasteful, tone deaf and un-analytical commentary, that Skip offers almost daily.
There’s times where he says things a fan of the Cowboys would never say and the problem is, those will also be things an analyst/reporter/journalist/ professional paid commentator, would also never say.
I’m gonna cite this again, that Mike Fisher is a Cowboys reporter and has written several books, and currently has a blog on FanNation.com. A year ago Fisher exposed Skip Bayless as a liar when Skip cited Jimmy Johnson as a source. Make of that what you will.
Tumblr media
This incident did however blow the lid off of one of the major flaws of this era of sports journalism. If so much of a sports show is made up of opinions, then surely anyone’s opinion can be voiced right? Everyone has opinions right?
See if your content was based off factual reporting and real analysis, there’d be no room for this type of nonsense. Just saying.

Jenny Tafts embarked on her artistic journey by taking flight on the flying trapeze after getting hooked on it while studying in New York in 2010. Her main focus lies in the mesmerizing realm of aerial hoop, where she gracefully soars through the air. Additionally, this artist has developed a unique apparatus called 'the infineight,' a captivating blend of spiral and hoop, which she co-created with skilled metalworker Tim Omspach. When she's not touring for performances, Jenny finds solace on the picturesque west coast of Ireland, where she brings her own artistic visions to life.

NOVEMBER 20, 1923, 9:15am SIX PACES OUTSIDE THE GREEN VALLEY LIBRARY
“Fates, it’s cold.” Thomas Andersson’s voice is tinged with a slight brogue, the way most of the Anderssons are affected. Something about the river valley brings it out in them. Red-nosed, the magistrate looked at Mrs. Bowen, the trio of sparrow feathers in her hat flittering in the wind. She said nothing, simply adjusting her clipboard in sound agreement.
They had a strong partnership, Mr. Andersson and Mrs. Bowen. He was kind and dedicated, a lifelong civil servant to the way of the valley. Mrs. Bowen -- Amberly, in her earlier years -- was a cousin by way of marriage, and an affable woman, besides. Where Thomas guided the magistrate’s office with a firm hand, Mrs. Bowen remembered the details. Like paperwork.
The queue had begun just as the sun began to peek over the horizon. For those still in their homes, it illuminated the frost trails on the windowpanes. The first crack into the water pail set voices aloft that had been stymied under the frozen ice -- missed messages from overnight, a chatter or two from Mr. Taft or Jenny Reed, two doors down. For those not so lucky, the queue formed.
“Good morn!” Called Mr. Andersson, stepping to the edge of the brick steps leading up to the library. “We’ll begin the lottery at the top! As each number is called, step forward and claim your lodgings. You must show proof of stable funds to Mrs. Bowen, and pay a deposit by oath or token, before receiving the keys. Occupancy begins immediately. And--”
Blue eyes, clear as the sky above, darted midway down the line to two men beginning to jostle.
“--No scuffling.”
---
Welcome welcome to the housing lottery! We’ll begin with the lowest number and work our way upward. To claim your residence, please reply to this post (or start a thread of your own!) indicating which lodging you would like, and paying the deposit. This can be done via coin or promise to Mrs. Bowen, our lovely NPC. Cheers!
Our queue order is: @tabithateivel @jimmie-leo @devilallthethyme @ruthiesalenger @hattie-dreamt-of-apples

Ida Gray: A Pioneering Cincinnati Dentist Who Earned National Fame
The very first African American woman to become a dentist was brought up, educated and practiced in Cincinnati.
Her name was Ida Gray, later Ida Gray Nelson and even later Ida Gray Rollins. She was born in 1867 in Tennessee to a Black teenager named Jenny Gray, who died soon after Ida’s birth. Ida’s white father had no interest in her welfare, so she was sent to live with an aunt in Cincinnati.
Ida’s aunt, Caroline Gray, was a seamstress who lived on George Street, a block south of the Catholic cathedral, at the eastern edge of the city’s Red Light district. Aunt Caroline made sure that her own three children and their cousin, Ida, attended Cincinnati’s segregated schools. Ida graduated from the segregated Gaines High School.
While still a high school student, Ida was hired by dentist Jonathan Taft to assist him in his practice on Seventh Street. Taft taught in the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, located around the corner on College Street. He was an early proponent for encouraging women to pursue careers in dentistry.
Tumblr media
Around the time Ida earned her diploma from Gaines High School, the University of Michigan recruited Taft to organize a dental college. The new dean encouraged his protégé to apply for admission and helped Ida prepare for the entrance exam. Ida was accepted for admission to the University of Michigan in 1887, and when she graduated in 1890, became the first African-American woman to earn the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery in the United States.
Within the African American community, Ida’s fame spread rapidly. An 1893 book, “Noted Negro Women: Their Triumphs and Activities” by Dr. Monroe Alphus Majors, notes of the new Dr. Gray:
“On returning to her home she opened a very cozy office on 9th street, and has in these two years built up a large practice, having as many white as colored patients.”
Ringwood’s Afro-American Journal, among the first magazines aimed at Black women, had this to say:
“As a result of strict attention to business and the thoroughness of her work she is kept constantly busy. Cincinnatians are proud of their Afro-American lady dentist, and she in every respect proves herself worthy of their confidence and admiration.”
The Richmond Planet, an African American newspaper, was positively enamored by the new practitioner:
“Her blushing, winning way makes you feel like finding an extra tooth anyway to allow her to pull.”
Also enamored was James S. Nelson, a lawyer, captain, and quartermaster for the Illinois National Guard, who later worked for many years as an accountant for the city of Chicago. It is not known if he was introduced to Dr. Gray as a patient or in a social setting – likely the latter, since her participation in various gatherings was frequently mentioned in the society columns, and she was a regular visitor to Chicago, where Nelson lived. Dr. Gray became Dr. Nelson on March 14, 1895. The Cincinnati Commercial Tribune reported the event via its “In Colored Circles” column:
“The marriage of Dr. Ida Gray to James Nelson took place last Thursday morning, at the home of the bride, 261 West Ninth street. It was a quiet affair. Rev. H.D. Prowd, D.D., performed the ceremony, after which the company partook of a light breakfast. They departed for Chicago where they will reside.”
Dr. Ida Gray Nelson became the first Black dentist of any gender to practice in Chicago. As in Cincinnati, she was socially and professionally active. Her name appears among the attendees of charity balls and medical conventions. For a Chicago celebration of the Emancipation Proclamation, “Thirty Years of Freedom,” Dr. Nelson represented dentistry among the goals African Americans could now achieve, including medical doctor, lawyer, editor and artist.
James Nelson died in 1926. Ida retired from dental practice in 1928 and the next year married William Rollins, a railroad porter who became a plasterer. She died on May 3, 1953 in Chicago and is buried in Lincoln Cemetery on the city’s south side.

Seriously, this book has no pictures, but it uses clever word play to make it funny. You are encouraged to read it out loud, which is when you are made to read ridiculous lines that will make you laugh. It is a clever concept, and one that encourages parents and children to read it together.

Shannon Sharpe Is Leaving Fox Sports
Tumblr media
In what has got to be the most shocking of all sports media news in recent months, Fox Sports analyst and co-host on Undisputed, Shannon Sharpe, has reportedly announced he will not be coming back to the show for another season.
This comes on the back of some heated on-screen exchanges between him and Skip Bayless and around that time it was also rumoured that Bayles was interested in reuniting with his old running buddy, Stephen A Smith.
Skip Bayless has certainly taken note of Shannon’s success away from the Fox network and has since started his own Youtube channel, along with ESPN host Stephen A Smith, starting his own channel, and it’s nice to see these guys finally join the rest of us in the new millenium.
youtube
If we’re going to read the room and make some assumptions about what is transpiring, I would guess that Shannon has known for a long time that he plans to leave, and really timed his departure for the end of the basketball season.
If yout think about it, it’s a tough spot for the producers of Undisputed to be in, because we’re about to go in to the offseason and what would already be a natural/annual dip in ratings could be made a lot worse by the departure of a beloved co-host like Shannon is.
Skip Bayess has rubbed several co-hosts wrong over the years, if you remember the time he had a very tense verbal exhancge with former host, Jenny Taft and she left the show not too long after that.
There was the Damar Hamlin debate in which, Skip Bayless came off as being something other than sympathetic, or even professional. The year 2022 was marred with a series of uncomfortable debates between the two, and while they were great for teleivision, you actually wondered if these guys actually get along off screen.
For his part, Shannon hasn’t exactly kept his nose clean given what his coverage/analysis is on-screen and then the fact that he basically sits courtside at every Laker game. It is fair to question his objectivity when you see that, so I can’t imagine that this went over well with a long time newspaper columnist like Skip Bayless, who believes the reporter should never be involved in the story, and the media/reporter’s credibility being the priority over everything else.
youtube
This truly does mark the beginning of a new era in sports television, I don’t think the show will be able to stay in that timeslot either, and if I had to guess, Nick Wright’s First Thing’s First will be the show to take the timeslot in the coming months.
