We Are All Fans of Juniper Fox
BY CAROLYN TURGEON
You’ve probably heard of Juniper Fox. With her nearly 3 million Instagram fans and personal line of products that include T-shirts, pins, and stickers, not to mention her very own celebrity bio, Juniper: The Happiest Fox, she might be the most famous and sought-after red fox in existence. She even has a full-time personal assistant, Jessika Coker, who manages her social media and various business ventures and also feeds her and her brethren every single day. Because Juniper is too in demand to answer press queries and probably busy lying on her back loudly howling, Coker kindly stepped in to answer the following penetrating questions.
Enchanted Living: How did you come to be Juniper’s owner/caretaker/mama? Jessika Coker: Juniper came from a small family-owned farm where they had a litter of ranched fox kits. Ranched foxes are descended from animals used in the fur trade. They’re not considered wild animals because of the differences in their genetic makeup, and for those born in captivity their options are usually to become a pet or to be pelted for their fur. This family was looking for homes for Juniper and her siblings. When I saw they needed a home, I felt inclined to take one, since I knew how to care for them from past experience at wildlife centers.
EL: What are the joys and challenges with her? JC: Juniper is quite a character and never fails to bring a smile to my face. She is extremely loving, and we have a bond beyond what I have ever had with a dog or cat. Foxes are very outwardly emotional animals and that can be both a good and bad thing. When she’s happy it’s blatant—it’s all over her face. She smiles, makes cooing sounds, wags her tail, and wants to be smothered with love and affection. When she’s upset it’s just as apparent. She will scream at the top of her lungs if the other foxes are bothering her; you can almost look at her and see her brows furrowed from frustration. Being such an emotional animal presents its challenges. With the foxes it’s impossible to make them do something they do not want to do, and any disturbance to their normal routine can throw them off for days. They’re not conventional pets, and the level of destruction they can cause to a home is ghastly. They’re loud, rambunctious, and smelly. Something most people don’t know is that fox urine is so pungent, it’s often used as scent cover for hunters! Having that smell in the house means constant cleaning and candles.

Totally Random Non-Fiction Tuesday
Tumblr media
First, I am a bit biased about Ravens, because I really like all types of Corvids (Ravens, Crows, etc). If anyone ever wants to go down an internet rabbit hole, search for images of all the different Corvids there are in the world. There are some very pretty ones!
That aside, I only realized recently (I read an article about how the Queen Raven is currently missing and presumed dead) that there were these Ravens in the Tower of London. One of the things that Yeoman Warder Christopher Skaife has done in his years working for the Queen of England is to care for those seven (now six) ravens.
The birds just steal the book (well, hopefully not literally), and, Skaife writes about them and reveals how they’re all different, with different personalities and, honestly, this book has only made me like Corvids even more. They’re like very small and opinionated dragons (the North American Crows at least love the shiny things!)
You may like this book If you Liked: Lessons from Lucy by Dave Barry, Juniper, The Happiest Fox by Jessika Coker, or On Cats by Charles Bukowski

I recieved a copy of Juniper the Happiest Fox by Jessika Coker from the publisher Abrams & Chronicle in exchange for a fair and honest review. This does not change or affect my opinion of the book.
With millions of followers on Instagram, Juniper the fox is the internet’s cutest pet!
Juniper’s adorable snaggletooth smile and fun-loving personality are vibrantly captured in this heartwarming book. With gorgeous photos, a charming narrative about Juniper’s life, and a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to live with a fox, this book will capture the heart of any animal lover. Juniper’s story chronicles her adoption and real-life Fox and the Hound relationship with a dog named Moose as well as the hilarious shenanigans she regularly gets herself into—including adapting to her new companion Fig, a younger fox who was rescued from a fur farm. Readers will also get a look at the thing Juniper is best known for: she paints with her paws! Juniper’s paw paintings sell out instantly on her website, and readers will delight in learning more about her artistic adventures. With her signature grin, Juniper reminds us that there is always something to be happy about; you just have to know where to look.
My dog Pippa–the closest thing to a real fox I’ll ever get!
I don’t think you guys realise how excited I was to get my hands on a copy of this book! I want to preface this review with a little story: I first discovered Juniper last year (the 18th of April 2017 to be exact, so a year and 2 days ago if you want to be pedantic), and instantly fell in love with the ball of fur! It wasn’t until then that I realised how much I loved foxes, and since then, anything that has foxes on it, I have to have it! I think part of the reason for my love of foxes is because of my own dog, Pippa. Pippa is a cross between a Pomeranian and a Jack Russell, and the combination of the two makes her look like a fox–everyone says it!
This book had me feeling all the feels! For the first 50 pages I chuckled my way through it, the following 50 pages had me tearing up with tears of joy, and then I was instantly back laughing or tearing up again, depending on the tale that the author, and owner of Juniper, Jessika, was telling us!
The book is beautifully put together, with just the right combination of words and photos. Neither one or the other out balance each other, and seeing all these beautiful pictures once again that I’ve seen time and time again on the @juniperfoxx Instagram feed brought a huge smile to my face.
My favourite spread from the whole book!
It’s not very often you come across the bundle of joy that is Juniper, and if ever a book was accurately titled, it was this one! I’ve been following Juniper and Figg (her adopted fox brother) online for the last year, and I love whenever they pop onto my feed, I instantly feel the joy and happiness that is associated with them!
Some of my fox stuff–a rug/mat, a sign for my wall, a little postcard sent by a friend, a little figurine I got off another friend and now my Juniper book! (oh, and the cookie they sent me too)
My fox cushions that live on my bed
Now that I have a physical copy of the book to call my own, I’ll definitely be turning to this little number whenever I’m feeling a little down, and in need of a pick-me-up!
Are you as big of a fan of Juniper (or foxes) as I am?
