🔥Creative director Johnny Coca to leave Mulberry after five years🔥

Mulberry has announced that Johnny Coca will be leaving the brand after five years as its creative director with effect from 31 March 2020.

His last collection for Mulberry will be spring/summer 2021. 

Coca, 44, came to Mulberry from Celine in 2015, where he had been head design director for leather goods, accessories, shoes and jewellery. Born in Seville, Coca had studied art in Paris and worked at Louis Vuitton before joining Celine.

Appointed following the abrupt departure of Emma Hill and five profit warnings, Coca was tasked with tackling falling sales and breathing life back into one of Britain’s best-loved accessories brands.

In addition to reworking the Mulberry logo, and shifting towards a more affordable range, he oversaw the launch of a number of new bag families including the Amberley and Iris, the introduction of eyewear and sneaker categories and the re-launch of the men’s accessories and jewellery ranges.

His first show for Mulberry took place during London Fashion Week in 2016. Talking to the Standard soon after, Coca said, “I’m not here to destroy the brand, I’m here to make it a success.”

Coca, who oversaw a successful international expansion programme, that extended Mulberry’s global presence across the UK, Japan, South Korea, North America, Europe and Australia, was also committed to Mulberry’s longstanding commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.

Earlier this year, he launched Mulberry’s 100 per cent sustainable leather Portobello Tote and the M Collection, a capsule of bags and outerwear crafted from a blend of Econyl-branded regenerated nylon and sustainable cotton.

Under Coca, the brand has also long urged its customers to send back bags to its Somerset factories to be repaired, and has a dedicated division that stockpiles hardware, leather and other materials so that even the oldest models can get a new life.

Thierry Andretta, Mulberry’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “Johnny’s creative vision has been a key element in delivering our strategy to develop Mulberry as an international luxury lifestyle brand.

The Sephardi Community of the Resettlement Era

The current exhibition on Jewish people who came to the UK from the Middle East and Northern Africa in the 20th century - Sephardi Voices - seems a good opportunity to look at the history of an earlier Sephardi community (people whose ancestry goes back to Spain, called ‘Sefarad’ in Hebrew). The museum has a lovely collection of material from the second half of the 17th and the early 18th century that sheds a light on the life of this small community.

It was a Sephardi rabbi, Menasseh ben Israel from Amsterdam, who, in the mid-17th century, pleaded with Oliver Cromwell for the readmission of Jewish people to the British Isles after they had been expelled by King Edward I in 1290. Menasseh was looking for a place where Jews could freely practice their faith, but his plea also had a religious goal. 

According to the messianic beliefs of the time, Jewish settlement in all parts of the world was a prerequisite for the arrival of the messiah. There were diplomatic exchanges and a conference was held about the topic, but no conclusive decision of principle was ever taken.

Nevertheless, the tiny Jewish community that had lived as Christian converts in London at the time, was allowed in 1656 to rent a house in Creechurch Lane for use as a synagogue and to acquire a plot of land in Mile End for a cemetery. It appears that Cromwell regarded the settlement of Jewish traders as economically opportune and, in the Christian version of messianism, as a religious necessity for the second coming of Christ. 

Gradually, Sephardim from other countries joined the community, and in 1701 it became necessary to build a larger synagogue in Bevis Marks that seated 400 men and 160 women. This is the oldest synagogue still in use in Britain today.

Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1795, he came to London with his family at the age of eight. He is the first documented Jamaican-born artist.

Every year for 100 years starting in 1679 the Bevis Marks congregation gave a large and beautifully worked silver dish loaded with sweetmeats to the Lord Mayor of London. This is one of the trays made by John Ruslen, an English silversmith who also made ritual objects for Bevis Marks for nearly 30 years. 

The dish shows the emblem of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in repoussé work, a tent in the wilderness with a watcher. Other minority communities, notably the Dutch Reform and French Protestant churches presented similar items to the Lord Mayor. The practice hints at the pressure these communities must have felt to secure the friendship of the Mayor in case of conflict.

Over the half century after their readmission professing Jews from Holland, the Dutch and English colonies in the Caribbean, and converts to Christianity from other parts of Europe settled here. By 1695 their number was 499.

One of the first families that settled were the Mocattas. In Spain, where the family was from, their members had converted to Catholicism as this was the only way Jews were allowed to remain in that country during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.

Yet, when their descendants moved first to Amsterdam and to London in 1671 they returned to their Jewish faith. In the early 1700s the family commissioned this exquisite velvet Torah mantle with gold embroidery and the rimmonim (Torah finials). The central panel shows a Torah scroll with mantle and rimmonim inside the Holy Ark.

The small community included overseas merchants, dealers in precious stones and jewellery, commercial clerks and physicians but also poor people such as pedlars and servants and those who could cater for the community including rabbis, kosher butchers and so forth. Soon, the settlers started to favour English over Spanish and Portuguese, and their adoption of English habits and fashions was quite smooth.

The family of the painter Catherine Mendes da Costa (1679-1756) belonged to the local Sephardi community. She is believed to have been the first British-born Jewish portraitist and the first female Jewish painter in recorded history. Catherine was a pioneer of watercolour painting on ivory and specialised in painting her relatives and friends. She produced a pretty locket portrait of her son Abraham that is now in the Jewish Museum collection.

The Jewish Museum also has several ritual items made by Abraham Lopes de Oliveyra (1657-1730) who was born in Amsterdam into a Portuguese Jewish family. As Jews were excluded from the Goldsmiths' guild in Amsterdam, he came to London in 1685.

He was employed by the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue to clean, set up and repair their ceremonial silver and in 1690, they bought a silver-gilt Torah pointer from him. Oliveyra made these rimmonim for the Hambro Synagogue, which was an Ashkenazi synagogue set up in 1701.

While the Sephardi community continued to grow slowly from the 1700s, Jews from central and Eastern Europe (‘Ashkenaz’ is the Hebrew term for Germany) settled in increasing numbers in England, including in county towns and seaports. They set up their own institutions and soon outnumbered the small Sephardi community.

CAPELO & MNA design Watches of Switzerland SoHo Flagship in New York City with lighting design by Lighting Workshop

London-based design consultancy CAPELO and New York-based MNA have collaborated to design the new flagship store for Watches of Switzerland, at 60 Greene Street, in the heart of the fashionable SoHo district of New York City. Central to the project was the lighting solution, which was designed by CAPELO, MNA and Lighting Workshop.

Established in 1924, The Watches of Switzerland Group, is the largest luxury watch and jewellery retailer in the UK. The Greene Street store is the first Watches of Switzerland showroom in New York City, and the second in its new USA portfolio.

The brief given to the design team was to create a showroom synonymous with the luxury of premium watch brands, which would also reflect the character of the SoHo District and the fabric of the historic 1880s cast-iron building.

The store brings a welcome addition to the New York retail landscape by offering a shopping experience that includes timepieces from longstanding Watches of Switzerland brand partners along with vintage timepieces, an inhouse cocktail bar, a curated library of watch books and an evolving collection of photographic artwork.

With more than 8,300 square feet of retail space over two floors, the boutique has a stylish palette of materials including exposed brickwork and polished plaster walls, oak floors and tin tile ceilings. Together with a carefully considered lighting scheme, this creates an elegant backdrop for the products on display, while remaining sympathetic to the character of SoHo.

Linear LEDs highlight the 30ft wide street frontage, while track-mounted narrow beam LEDs located within an architectural pocket behind the façade provide accent light to the storefront window displays. Generous 12-foot ceilings house recessed twin narrow-beam LED adjustable spotlights which create a comfortable lighting backdrop. Original cast-iron columns, featuring decorative capitals, are lit by recessed narrow beam uplights which highlight the column detail.

The ground-floor retail space accommodates three branded in-store boutiques for Rolex, Patek Philippe and Cartier. Blackened steel-frame glazed partitioning delineates the individual spaces, while maintaining visibility and cohesiveness across the floor. Shop-in-shop units for Omega, Breitling, IWC Schaffhausen, Hublot and Jaeger-LeCoultre are positioned around the perimeter, while other leading watch brands are located within the multi-branded area surrounding the central staircase opening. Throughout the store, freestanding display cases feature stem- and arm-mounted continuous rectangular LED adjustable case lights, which add sparkle to the merchandise.

A feature digital, library and accessories wall draws attention to the blackened steel and oak staircase, encouraging the customer to venture down to the lower-ground level. A linear LED strip, surface mounted within the architectural detail, creates an unobtrusive lighting effect to the stairs, adding subtle visual interest.

Contrasting with the ground-floor retail space a cocktail bar, designed in partnership with Death & Co., one of New York City’s most influential cocktail lounges, provides the focal point to the lower-ground floor, its oak and marble counter, with brass and woven leather details, adding sophistication and complementing the high-end customer experience. Lee Broom pendant lamps and a decorative tin tile ceiling add to the period feel. Recessed pinhole dimmable LED downlights, with a narrow aperture, are located above the bar. These work with the decorative pendants to highlight the glasses, bottles and the bar counter. Windows behind the bar feature a linear LED grazing strip, which adds visual brightness, highlighting the translucence of the windows.

Intended as a respite for shoppers and a gathering place for enthusiasts and the local community, the WOS bar offers cocktails crafted exclusively for Watches of Switzerland clients. For the more literary-minded shopper, an intimate library/bookshop, curated by Esquire Fashion Director and noted watch enthusiast, Nick Sullivan, includes a range of books from biographies to anthologies to luxe coffee table favourites. Bookshelf display cases are framed by light from recessed adjustable linear LEDS, while the book shelves are lit by a surface-mounted linear LED strip.

Within the central section of the lower-ground floor, accent light is provided by track-mounted narrow-beam LEDs, while unobtrusive monopoint LEDs, with a black finish, are carefully positioned between the exposed beams, adding drama to the scene.

Positioned around the perimeter, shop-in-shop units for Tag Heuer and Tudor add to the brand line-up, while a dedicated service and repairs consultation area provides direct access to Watches of Switzerland’s expert watchmakers. Here, track mounted LEDs provide subtle, ambient light to ensure a comfortable environment.

I live in the UK and I’m a professional seamstress, experienced in various alterations/repairs (also making clothing, jewellery, customisations)For a while I’ve been wanting to set up my own alteration business but heard people say it wouldn’t be popular or bring in enough money.The town I live in is very busy, there are about 6 alteration places here - 2 dry cleaners which offer basic alterations, a men’s tailor, a home business, bridal shop and an alterations shop which isn’t in the main town/high street area (about 1.5 mile away).I specialise in women’s clothing and can do pretty much all alterations apart from advanced bridal so would need to train in those skills if I was to offer a full on bridal alterations service although I’m not sure I want to go down the bridal route. I’m experienced in vintage, dance/sportswear, holy communion, prom etc and also men’s alterations. I’m in my mid 20s and think my target audience would be from 20-45 (assuming most people over 45 already have somewhere they go or already know basic alterations from being taught at school/factory work) I think what would make my business different from the others is I’m more modern and fashion aware so would possibly attract a younger crowd with the right marketing hopefully.My issue is I’m not sure if it’s what people need as people say it’s a dying trade and also the obsession with high street shopping but I see so many alterations shops in London (im not in London though) that are really busy and successful, we’re also in a time where people are buying more vintage and second hand and also wanting more better fitted clothing imo but I guess some people just don’t think about getting things altered, I know I need to do more research on this. I don’t want to rely on just random customers though and want to offer my services to retail/vintage business and various others like contract work but need to figure this out.I would like to open a shop in the town area or near and my plan would be to have the shop so the workroom is separate and there would be a dressing room area to make more private kind of like if you were to walk in a bridal shop so you have that kind of personal experience with being fitted instead of just trying something in a corner behind a rail.I’m just so undecided if it’s the right thing to pursue or not? Atm I work but will probably start small and set up a workshop in my house, social media and make business cards and build contacts and see where it takes me. I also don’t know anything about accounting etc so that side of things does worry me too :/
