Good eye, anon! Maybe this was the day Ja'Marr gave it to them 🥲
Also more screenshots since I just went back to watch this interview and couldn't help myself. Oh the LSU trio 💜💛

you belong with me l || joe burrow x reader
Tumblr media
description: you and joe have been best friends ever since ohio state and you’ve been his biggest supporter for as long as you both could remember. it was always the same dynamic between you both, friends. very very very close friends. but what if you wanted to be more than just friends?
a/n: best friends to lovers HELLO? you are both so oblivious yet so aware of your feelings at the same time it is crazy. so many little moments that have you like “how the hell are you not aware you’re in love with each other?”.
you’re in denial for a lot of this fic, and Joe pretty much knows what he wants but is a little scared to actually do something about it
part 2
warnings: language, mentions of sex (no actual smut)
word count: 13.3 k
—-------------------------------------
Thursday
You had just gotten home from running a few errands, absolutely exhausted from all the running around you had been doing from Christmas shopping and planning for your sister's wedding. You left all the bags in your entryway and collapsed on your couch.
“Ughh,” you groaned into the pillow. It had been a pretty chaotic week for you and you felt tired and burnt out, and were in desperate need of a night out.
You heard your phone buzz in your pocket so you moved to lay on your back and pulled your phone out to see who was calling. The name on your screen immediately made you smile and forget about your fatigue, so naturally, you answered it.
“Hey, Y/N,” Joe said over the phone as he sat down on his couch.
“Hi Joe,” you smiled as you started twirling your his sweatshirt string. Somehow you ended up with a few of Joe’s shirts or hoodies in your closet from when you’d be over at his place or him at yours. Currently, you have one of his old LSU hoodies which was a little big on you, but that made it even more comfier. “How was practice?”.
“Good,” He breathed out, sounding a little weary.
“Is something wrong? You sound extra tired,” you ask your best friend.
“Nah, Just the usual tiredness from practice but I’m fine,” he lied.
You could tell when Joe would lie to you, the tone of his voice would usually give it away. And right now, he was lying to you. “I know you too well Joe, what's up?”.
He let out a sigh and said, “The Bengals Christmas Party is tomorrow night and I’m dreading it,”.
“Ahhh, I see. Mr. Hermit Crab has to go to a partyyyy,” you tease.
“Really funny,” He says, rolling his eyes which you could feel through the screen.
“I know you don’t partially enjoy parties but it’s Christmas, lighten up,” you tell him. “There will be lots of people there to keep you company,”.
“And that’s just the problem. Everyone there is just gonna wanna talk about football and I need one night to just relax,” he says.
You felt bad for Joe since you knew how all of this would get draining for him. It was already stressful enough that the playoffs were slowly creeping up and the background noise was only getting louder by the day, and then he had 50 other things on top of that to do. He didn’t get any break time once December rolled around. That’s also why it was hard for him to enjoy his birthday, which happened to be next Sunday.
“I know, I’m sorry. I wish I could do something to stop you from going but you are the face of the team and not going would look bad,”.
As he listens to you, an idea pops into his head. He sits up and says, “You know, it would be a lot more tolerable if you came with me?”.
Your eyes light up at his offer. Joe always ended up bringing you with him to events like this. Ever since he got drafted by the Bengals, you’d be right by his side at any team activities that needed a plus 1. At first, you weren’t really sure why he’d bring you along with him, and quite honestly you still aren’t really sure since he could just go alone or bring anyone else, but it always seemed to make him more comfortable when you were there and you’d be happy to keep him company at any given time.
“That’s if you're free?” He adds.
“Oh trust me, I am. I’m in desperate need of a night out so this might be the thing I need,” you say as you hop off the couch and walk into your bedroom to figure out an outfit for tomorrow.
“Everything alright?” He asks as he gets up to figure out his own outfit for tomorrow now that he actually has a reason to go.
“Yeah, just a triple homicide. Work, Christmas, and my Sister's wedding planning,” you say as you pull out a few Christmasy dresses, none really catching your eye.
“Damn, December really isn’t our month,” he laughs. “You need a night out,”.
“You got that right,” you smile. You're just about to ask him what he was thinking of wearing to the party but your sister calls you, interrupting you and Joe’s call.
“Shit, my Sister’s calling me. Probably more wedding stuff,” you sigh.
“That’s okay,” he laughs. “I’ll pick you up at 6 tomorrow,” he adds.
“Sounds perfect. See you tomorrow,” you smile.
“Bye, Y/N,” he replies before hanging up. You then call your sister back, placing the phone on speaker and throwing it onto the bed.
“Hey Kaylee,” you say as you go back to outfit hunting for tomorrow.
“Hey, you busy?” She asks.
“A little. I’m trying to find an outfit for tomorrow,” you say as you pull out a cropped red sweater.
“What’s tomorrow?” She asks.
“Joe asked me to go with him to the team Christmas party,” you said as you dug through your closet for a black mini skirt and sheer tights to go with the sweater.
“Aw that’s nice,” she says. “You know, with the number of things Joe brings you to or does with you, you’d think that you both would be a couple by now. You are practically his girlfriend,” she jokes, only partly though.
You immediately stop looking through your closet and turn back to face your phone. “What?” you say as you feel yourself turning red at the mention of being his girlfriend, a thought you buried all those years ago because you thought it was silly.
“I’m just joking, Y/N, kind of. But I mean, you are doing what girlfriends typically do. I know you’re really close friends and you have been for years, but he brings you to like everything and you’re always doing something together. People think you’re his secret girlfriend for a reason,” she says.
You find yourself staring off into space as she’s talking. Deep down, you knew she was right but you just didn’t want to look at it that way. You were doing girlfriend duties for him and it became clearer as time passed by. At first, it didn’t bother you much, it was just two best friends doing best friend things right? It was completely normal for you to go to every single one of his games, go to these team events with him, and spend so much time together, right? But as time went on, you started to realize that maybe people’s comments weren’t totally out of left field. It did look like you were his girlfriend, especially since he didn’t have any other girl with him most of the time.
You had feelings for Joe back when you first met at Ohio State, but you never did anything about them because you thought he didn’t feel the same. You spent weeks spiraling over your feelings towards him, but you eventually gave up because you didn’t want to lose him as a friend in case he felt differently about you, so you buried the feelings and moved on. Or so you thought you buried them. Clearly, that wasn’t the case since you were spiraling, again, at the thought of being his girlfriend and being told that you were acting like it too.
You never pushed Joe about his dating life because you thought that was boundary stomping. Yes, you two were very close, but you didn’t really want to know the details about his love life for many reasons. You just watched that part of his life from a distance. He had a few girlfriends over the years, none of which stuck around or fizzled out over time. The only consistent girl in his life was you. And that’s why everyone thought you were his girlfriend when he first got drafted.
They were convinced you both were either dating or hooking up, neither of which was true. It was a little awkward when that gained traction, but it slowly faded out over time but still lingered to this day. You both tried to not let it affect your friendship and for the most part, it worked. You ignored and continued to support him in every way possible, but those thoughts of you being a couple were buried deep inside your mind and sometimes peeked through, just like how they were right now.
“I haven’t really looked at it that way,” you lied.
“Of course you haven’t. Why would you? Joe is such a great guy and has been a great friend to you for years. Why would you ever think that way,” she laughs.
Being best friends with one of the best quarterbacks in the league had its perks. But you weren’t one to take advantage of that often. You were just there to support your best friend and enjoy the ride. To everyone else, he was Joe Burrow. But to you, he was just Joe. And you loved that you got to see the real him and the guy you met in college was still there regardless of everything that’s changed since then.
“Rightttt,” you say as you sit down on your bed.
“Well anyways, I’ll leave you to it. I was just calling about what the menu should look like for the pre-wedding brunch but we can talk about that later,” she says.
“You sure?” You ask.
“Positive. Have fun at the party and tell Joe I said hi,”.
“Thanks, Kaylee and I will. I’ll call you soon,” you say as you hang up. You toss your phone to the side and fall back onto your bed. The thought of you and Joe being a couple was stupid, right? You both had been friends for years and never once did he show any other feelings other than friendship towards you, so why was this even a thought? Were you not seeing something that everyone else was? Did Joe ever have the same thoughts as you?
He was the perfect guy. He was kind, selfless, funny, attractive, smart, and charming. Any girl would be so lucky to have him as her boyfriend. Wouldn’t it be nice if he was your boyfriend? He matches your vibe completely and you both have so much in common, plus you already know so much about each other. You would be the perfect couple and people wouldn’t even be surprised if you got together.
“Nah, this is stupid,” you shook your head as you broke out of whatever fantasy you were dreaming about.
But was it a fantasy, or was it something that you both wished was reality deep down?
Friday Night
The next day flew by pretty quickly and you found yourself sitting at your vanity, applying the last bit of makeup before Joe picked you up. You opted for a cropped red sweater, a black mini skirt with sheer tights, and black knee-high boots. Jewelry-wise, you didn’t go all out. Just your usual earrings and necklaces, but you made sure to wear the diamond tennis bracelet Joe got you after he signed his rookie contract. You didn’t wear it often since it was so expensive, but whenever you did, Joe would notice and a huge smile would appear on his face.
Flashback to 2020
You sat down on Joe’s couch as he brought over two glasses of red wine. He had called you over for dinner tonight at his new place that he bought once his contract money came through.
“I loveee your house. It’s very homey,” you chirp as you pull a plush blanket over your legs.
“Thank you,” he smiles as he sits down, handing you your wine glass. “If everything goes according to plan, I’ll be upgrading in a few years,”.
“Oh trust me, it’ll go just as planned,” you say, taking a sip of the blood red wine. “You’re about to set the league on fire,”.
“I appreciate the confidence,” Joe laughs as he sips his wine.
“I’m so glad you got drafted to Cincy. It was already tough enough that you were down in Baton Rouge for 2 years, I don’t know what I would’ve done if you got drafted anywhere else,” you sigh.
“Sounds like somebody missed me,” he said as he threw his head back into the couch pillow.
“No shit, goofball. I missed my best friend,” you laughed as you playfully shoved his shoulder.
“Well, take this as an apology,” he says, putting his glass to the side and reaching down to grab something from the side of the couch. He pulls up a small lilac gift bag and places it in your lap.
“What’s this?” you question as butterflies fill your stomach. You place your glass on the side table and examine the little bag.
“An apology for being away for 2 years,” he says, raising his eyebrows and motioning you to open the bag.
“It’s not like I didn’t see you at all. I went to a few games and you still came back here during your breaks,” you said as you patted his thigh.
“Still, I wasn’t at your fingertips like I usually am,” he laughs, causing a blush to creep up your face. “Just open it,”.
You nod and open the bag and are met with a beige box. You open the box and your jaw drops at the sight of a shiny, very real-looking, diamond tennis bracelet sitting inside.
“Joe, what the fuck,” you whispered as you ran your fingers across the big diamonds. “You didn’t have to- This must’ve been so expensive,”.
“Don’t worry about all that. It’s a gift from me to my best friend and saying no would be rude,” he says, grabbing the bracelet and helping you put it on. “In case you forgot, I am a millionaire now, and you never wanna upset a millionaire,” he jokes.
“Don’t send your minions on me now,” you joke as he clasps the bracelet onto your wrist. “But seriously, you didn’t have to do this,”.
He tilts his head, giving you a look that you never were one to argue with. “Fine, Fine. Thank you sooo much. I love it,” you say as you launch yourself onto him, pulling him in for a warm hug.
He wraps his arms around you tightly and laughs into your shoulder. His hand runs up and down your back as you run your fingers through his soft hair. You weren’t sure how long you both were hugging; you were waiting for him to pull away, but he was waiting for you to pull away. But at the same time, neither of you really wanted to pull away.
You appreciated the glamorous gift from him, and you’d be lying if you said you didn’t feel butterflies in your belly when you opened the box. Little did you know this bracelet was his first official purchase from his contract money. He knew that once the money hit his account, he wanted to buy you something to show how much he cared for you, the only girl that has been by his side through thick and thin.
End of flashback
Last night’s thoughts were no longer in your head as you reminded yourself that Joe was just your best friend. Nothing more, and nothing less. There was no reason to ruin your bond with a silly little pipe dream.
You heard your phone buzz from what was probably a text from Joe. You opened the text, laughing at the text, which was a little inside joke you two had made over the years.
Joe: getaway car
Getaway Car” was a term you both would use whenever you needed to escape something. Whether it was wanting to leave a college party because you were feeling uncomfortable, wanting to leave an awkward situation, or like right now, when either of you needed a break from life and needed to do something fun. All you would say to each other was “getaway car” and you’d know what was up.
You smiled at the text, grabbed your purse, and made your way out the door and down to his car.
Meanwhile, Joe was humming along to the song playing on his aux, ‘Lovers Rock’ by TV Girl. You both had made a shared Spotify playlist years ago back at OSU and would often listen to the playlist whenever you were together, so naturally he had to play it on the way to the party. This song was clearly your addition as Joe’s music taste was a little different, but he’d learn to enjoy songs like this because of you.
You also used to listen to this playlist during the time Joe was away at LSU and you would miss talking to him since he was extremely busy. He would do the same on those nights when he was alone and couldn’t sleep because he would be missing your silly little movie nights, thinking about if you were having these movie nights with anyone else while he was away.
You made your way out of your apartment building, spotted Joe’s car, and walked over to it. You knocked on the window since he was too busy staring off into space to notice you walk over. He jumped slightly at the sudden noise but then relaxed as he realized it was just you. He unlocks the door which you swing open, hopping inside and letting out a deep breath.
“Woo, it’s freezing out there,” you say as you rub your hands together for some warmth.
He stares at you up and down, taking in your outfit which you looked stunning in, his eyes stopping at your wrist which was decked with the diamond bracelet he got you. A smile creeps on his face, which you notice.
“You look really beautiful,” He smiles as he puts the car into drive and exits the parking lot.
You blushed at his compliment as you also took in what he was wearing. Black jeans and a dark green sweater along with one of his many diamond chains. He looked so good right now. The way his hair naturally fell into place, the way his mouth was curled up into a smile, and the way his sweater fit perfectly around his muscular arms. He just looked so good.
“You don’t look too bad yourself, Burrow,” you tease.
“Thanks for coming with me by the way,” he smiles over at you.
“Anytime,” you smile back. “Remember, just say ‘getaway car’ if you wanna leave if you get overwhelmed or something,”.
“Aye-Aye, Captain,” he salutes.
You take note of the song playing in the car and you blush again, and then hear Joe singing a bit of the song under his breath.
"While the others talk, We were listening to lovers rock, In her bedroom," he mumbles.
“Lovers Rock?” You question. “Damn, someone’s music taste def rubbed off on you,”.
“Actually, it’s our playlist that’s on right now. But yeah, I’ve learned to enjoy this kinda music. Might be because of a certain someone,” he shrugs.
“Hmm, whoever she is must have excellent taste,” you say as you turn up the volume.
“Oh trust me,” he says looking over at you, the look on his face sending shivers down your spine. “She definitely does,”.
A short drive later, you both arrive at the party. Joe turns the car off, hops out, and jogs over to your side, helping you out of the car before you can even open the door.
“Such a gentleman,” you tease as you reach to close the car door, but he beats you to it.
“For you? Always,” he winks as he closes your door and loops your arm around his, leading you into the party. You blush at the contact, but why were you blushing? He’s just being friendly, right?
Before you can dive deeper into those thoughts again, you find yourself already inside the party. soft Christmas music was playing over the speakers as the room was filled with people. You could see why he didn’t want to go now, especially alone. There were a bunch of food stations around the room, holiday photo ops, Christmas games, and the whole 9 yards. It was all a little overwhelming and it looked like Christmas threw up all over the party venue.
“Merry Christmas,” you whisper.
“See why I didn’t wanna come here alone?” he laughs.
“Ohh yeah,” you nod as he leads you over to your friends.
“Joe! Y/N!,” Jess says as she gets up from the table, a huge grin on her face.
“Hey Jess,” you chirp as you pull away from Joe’s arm to hug your friend.
“Hi Jess,” Joe smiles. “Where’s Sam?”.
“Oh, I think he’s over by the drinks with Ja’Marr and Ted,” she says as she pulls away from the hug.
Joe looks over at you and you already know what he is going to ask, “Go,” you laugh. “I’ll be here with Jess. Yell if you need me?”.
“You got it,” he smiles as he walks over to the guys.
“I guess Joe strung you along with him tonight?” Jess asks as she sits back down, pulling out the chair next to her for you.
“Yeah,” you laugh as you sit down. “He didn’t wanna go and asked if I could go with him to make it more tolerable,”.
“Sounds like Joe,” she laughs. “He really hasn’t changed since college has he? He always used to drag you along to all the parties,”.
“Not at all,” you smile as you see him laughing with the guys.
“So, first thoughts about the party? Since it’s your first time here,” she asks as she takes a sip of her drink.
“Verrry Christmasy and grand. Maybe a little Overwhelming?” you sigh.
“That sounds about right,” she laughs, looking up and smiling, prompting you to turn your head.
Joe was walking over, a grin on his face and a drink in his hand. “I got you your favorite,” he says, placing the Peach Mojito down in front of you.
“Thank You,” you smile up at him, squeezing his hand for a second.
“I’m not drinking tonight so make sure you drink for me too,” he says.
“Say less,” you say while you pick up your delicious drink.
“You good though?” He asks.
“I’m great, go with the guys,” you say, flashing him a reassuring smile.
“Okay. But if you need anything, just come over,” he says.
“Same goes for you,” you say as he gives you two thumbs up before walking away.
“Always making sure you’re good before he does anything else. Classic Joe,” Jess smiles, causing you to freeze for a second. He always did that though, right? That’s just what he does with all his friends, not just you.
“No big deal,” you whisper to yourself.
“Hm?” Jess asks.
“Oh nothing, just talking to myself,” you brush off. “So wait. Did Joe go to the party last year?” you ask, changing the subject as you take a sip of your drink. That question was floating through your mind all day, and you needed to know the answer. He didn’t take you last year but he definitely went, but with who?
“Mhm,” she nods. “He went with Stella,”.
Your heart drops when she says that name. “Ohh right, his ex,” you sigh.
“Yup,” she nods.
His ex-girlfriend Stella. You didn’t really know much about her since you only talked to her a couple of times. One day she was in the suite, then suddenly she wasn’t. You didn’t push Joe to tell you what happened, especially since he didn’t seem too upset about it. All he told you was that they both just didn’t work.
“What happened between them? You know I usually don’t push him about his love life,”.
“Oh I know,” she laughs. “I don’t really know the full story myself. All Sam told me was that Joe felt like it didn’t fit. Like it wasn’t really what he was looking for relationship-wise or person-wise,”.
“Interesting,” you say as you sip your drink. You rarely interacted with his girlfriends. Not just because they wouldn’t stick around so why bother, but also because you felt like they didn’t really like your vibe for some reason. Maybe it was because he would always talk about you and spend time with you, but did they care that much? You were just friends anyway and you thought that was obvious.
Joe’s POV
“Sooo, you brought Y/N?” Ja’Marr teases.
“Yes… I did,” you say, taking a sip of your water.
“Anything going on over there,” Sam teases as he pats your shoulder.
“What? With me and Y/N?” You scoff. “Please, we would never-”.
“Now don’t lie to me Burrow,” Ja’Marr says. “Don’t act like you wouldn’t go running to her if she looked at you that way,”.
“Ja’Marr is right,” Ted adds. “It’s kinda obvious you have a thing for her,”.
“Are you guys drunk?” You scoff. “What’s with the sudden attack?”.
“Nah, but you might be,” Ja’Marr says. “Wake up Man. You clearly like her. You’re always talking about her, you’re always with her and don’t forget all those times at LSU when you’d be going on about how you wished she was with you right now. Those feelings ain’t die that easily,”.
“There’s a reason that everyone thought and still thinks that she’s your girlfriend,” Sam says.
“That’s just overly invasive fans and their stupid speculation,” you deflect.
“Mmm, not to mention, have there been any ladies on your radar since Stella? You both broke up in January which was 11 months ago. And the reason was that you didn’t think she was the right person for you,” Ted says.
“Mhm, and does the right person that you’re looking for happen to be sitting there next to my girlfriend?” Sam adds as points over at you.
You look over at her, smiling as you see her laughing like a hyena at something Jess said. She looked angelic as the soft glow of the lights reflected off her beautiful face; her cute laugh caught your attention even though you were so far away from each other in the crowded room.
Deep down, you knew they were right. You didn’t want to admit it, but you did have a thing for her and have had a thing for her since OSU. You never brought up those feelings to anyone, not even Y/N. You didn’t know if she felt the same way about you and you were too scared that you’d ruin your friendship if she didn’t feel the same way.
Those feelings even stuck around at LSU. They actually got stronger since you were away from her for so long. But you once again didn’t want to screw up your bond, so you repressed those feelings as much as you could and tried to distract yourself, but distractions were only temporary. That’s also why none of your girlfriends suck around. They weren’t what you were looking for and you weren’t invested.  What you were looking for had always been by your side since Day 1, but you just didn’t know what to do about it without risking your friendship. You knew you loved her, and she knew that you loved her as a friend. But she didn’t know that you loved her a lot more than how just friends loved each other.
She was the perfect girl. Any man would be lucky to have her as his girlfriend. She was stunning, genuine, funny, fearless, the epitome of a dream girl. Her being your girlfriend was a dream, but it probably would never happen. It never happened all these years you had known each other, so why now?
But what if she liked you back? You wouldn’t know because you never tried that door, even though you had the key in your pocket all along.
End of Joe’s POV
The party flew by quickly as you talked with the WAGs for a little, ate some yummy food, and Joe made his rounds as QB1 talking to as many people as he could before his social battery ran out. Occasionally, he’d look over at you if he got a little nervous or overwhelmed. The mere sight of you always calmed him down. And once his battery died, he found himself sitting next to you, as usual.
Joe’s conversation with the guys still lingered in his mind as he watched you chat and drink with your friends. He didn’t know what to do about the feelings he was feeling towards you and how to handle them, so he decided to let it be and just let things flow the way they were. If something was going to happen, it would. If it wasn’t, it wouldn’t. Forcing something would be the last thing he’d ever do with you.
You were extra giggly for the past hour, definitely drunk since you were on your 4th, maybe 5th drink of the night. You weren’t really sure anymore since you and the other girls did shots at the bar earlier, so it was definitely more than 5.
“Y/N, how many drinks have you had,” Joe asks as he looks over at you.
“Hmmm, I don’t know. Numbers are funny,” you giggle as you grab his arms. “You look really pretty tonight, Joey,” you giggle as you grab another drink. “Have you thought about being a male model? I heard Calvin Klein does some pretty fun shots. The girlies would lose it. I know I would,” you giggle.
Joe’s eyes widened as he blushed a little. You were clearly out of your mind drunk and he knew exactly what would happen when you got this wasted. You’d be all giggly, then you’d have the zoomies, and then you’d crash, hard. He couldn’t have this happen at the party in front of everyone and he knew you’d kick his ass if he let you act like this in front of them.
“Okayyy, I think that’s enough drinks for tonight,” he says, taking your drink out of your hand.
“Noooo,” you whine as you reach for the drink. “It’s so good though,”.
“And so is weed but you don’t see me being high all the time,” he jokes as he pushes the drink further away from you.
You raise your eyebrow at him and say, “That’s funnyyyy. Those shades are glued to your face for a reason,”.
He stares at you for a few seconds, taking in every detail of your face. How your glossy lips were curled up into a smile, how little strands of your hair were falling onto your face, and how you were practically glowing in the soft light of the room.
“I don’t think you’d particularly enjoy being crossfaded,” he says matter-of-factly.
“Do you have some right now? Let’s test it out,” You say as your eyes light up.
Oh hell no. How drunk were you? Joe thought to himself.  “Y/N,” he says, staring deeply into your eyes, grabbing both your hands.
“What?” You giggle softly as you play with the wristbands on his wrist.
“Getaway Car,” he says.
You immediately sit up in your chair and turn serious at the words that left his mouth, reminding you what those words meant and what they were used for. “Are you okay? Did something happen?”.
“I’m fine,” he laughs as he grabs your hand that was playing with his wristbands. “But you’re not. You’re 2 seconds away from falling over,”.
“What do you mean? I’m amazingggg,” you laugh as you stand up to prove your point, almost falling over but Joe places his hands on your hips, catching you before you can. His big warm hands were firmly holding you in place as heat climbed up your body at his electric touch.
“Yeaah, we’re going home now,” he says as he gets up from his chair, not giving you a second to protest. He grabbed your waist with one hand to make sure you didn’t fall over as you said your goodbyes and made your final lap around the room. The hand that was wrapped around your waist caused butterflies to fill your belly. His touch was so gentle and fulfilling, yet had you craving more.
He led you out to the car, his hand still gripping your waist, as you were going on about how much you loved Christmas.
“I just love giving gifts,” you giggle as you lean your head on his shoulder. “It’s sooo fun getting to see everyone’s reactions when they open the gifts I give them. Speaking of, what do you want for Christmas Joey?”.
“Nothing,” Joe smiles. “I already have everything I want,” he says, looking down at you.
You pause for a few seconds as your drunken mind tries to process what he said. You didn’t see him look down at you, but you could feel his gaze on you. He wasn’t talking about you, was he? He was definitely just talking about his life and career.
“That’s funny. I already got your birthday gift down for next Sunday, but you gotta meet me halfway for Christmas,” you say, quickly dodging those thoughts again.
“Mmm, still don’t want anything. For either occasion in fact,” he says as you reach the car. He removes his hand from your waist to open your door and then helps you sit inside.
“Well too bad,” you smile as he sits in the driver’s seat. “I guess I’ll have to figure it out myself,”.
“Have fun,” he says as he connects his phone to the Bluetooth; your playlist once again playing on the speakers.
You fall back into your seat and bob your head along to the music as Joe pulls the car out of the parking spot, and leaves the party venue. A few minutes later, you’ve made it onto the highway. Your head is leaning against the comfy headrest as you look over at Joe. His tan skin was shining in the moonlight and his pink lips were curled up into a smile. You move your head to look out the window, taking in the gorgeous view of the Cinncinati Skyline, and then notice that Joe drove past the exit that you would take to get downtown to your apartment.
“Joe, you missed the exit,” you say as you flip your head back over to him.
“I know,” he laughs.
“Uhhh, well are you gonna go a different way or?” you mumble.
“Nah, you’re way too drunk to be left alone tonight. We’re going back to my place,” he says.
“Joe, you don’t have to do that. I’ll be fine on my own and I don’t wanna intrude,” you say, sitting up in your seat.
“Intrude on what? It’s just me in that big-ass house,” he laughs. “Having some company won’t hurt,”.
“Are you sure?” you ask.
“Positive. I know how you get when you’re this drunk and I would be a terrible friend to make you deal with that alone,” he laughs.
“Yeahh,” you trail off. “You’re such a great..friend,”. It pained you a little to say “friend” and you weren’t entirely sure why. It also pained Joe a little to hear you say “friend”. If only you would put “boy” in front of it, he thought to himself.
“So it’s settled then. You’re getting the Burrow treatment tonight,” he winks, looking over at you, his eyes sparkling in the moonlight.
“Uhhh, are we still talking about hangover care or?” you joke, breaking out into a fit of laughter.
“Dirty, Dirty Mind,” he chuckles as he shakes his head.
You bit your bottom lip as you stared out the window again, watching the cars pass by one by one you let out a content sigh and got comfy in the car seat again. But then, the song on the aux changed, immediately catching your attention and causing you to flip your head back to him.
Joe’s eyes light up as he hears the soft music playing in the background, recognizing the song instantly and raising the volume.
“Ohh yeah,” you say, moving up in your seat and swaying your shoulders as you recite the song lyrics.
“Because I'm eighteen, And I still live with my parents. Yeah, they're not like yours,” you belt out as you close your eyes and dance in your seat.
“Well, yours are more understanding. I've never fell in love, I've saved those feelings for you,” Joe sings, looking right over at you as he sings that last bit. He watches you cutely dance around in your seat, his heart softening as he takes in the moment. Something about you sitting in his car seat, after a late night, on the way back to his house, made him feel all giddy inside.
“So let's do all the stupid shit that young kids do. It's me and you, youuu,” you sing as you open your eyes and point at Joe, who looks a little..lovestruck?
Lovestruck? Please, as if he would ever feel that about you out of all people, you thought to yourself. The alcohol in your system was really messing with your mind right now.
About 20 minutes later, Joe pulled into the driveway of his house, which was massive. He definitely had upgraded from his last house, just as he had hoped to and just as you said he would do. It was just him in this big house, all alone. He would often get bored since he didn’t have anyone around to keep him company, so he was more than ecstatic to have you over for the night.
After parking in the garage, he helps you inside the house. He walks you over to the kitchen island, pulling out a barstool with his leg, and motioning for you to sit down.
“First order of business, Water and Advil,” he says as he grabs a water bottle from the fridge, then moves to open the drawer to grab the bottle of Advil. He pulls out two tablets and hands them to you along with the water.
“Thank you,” you say after you wash down the medicine with the water.
“Second order of business, getting you something comfy to wear,” he says, grabbing your hand and yanking you off the stool. His warm hand molded perfectly against yours as he led you up the stairs to his bedroom.
“But I don’t have any clothes here,” you mumbled as he pulled you into his room, still holding your hand.
“That’s okay, you can just wear one of my big shirts,” he says as drops your hand and walks into his closet, returning to the room after a few moments with a purple LSU shirt in hand. “Is this good?” he asks.
“Perfect,” you whisper as you take the shirt from his hand. “Be right back,” you smile as you walk into his bathroom.
You peel off your clothes from tonight, placing them into a neat pile on the vanity as you slip on his shirt. It was massive on you, no surprise there though. You smiled as you read the text on the shirt; it was his championship t-shirt from when he won the Natty. You scrunched up the fabric, bringing it to your nose, taking a deep breath, and remembering that amazing night.
Flashback to 2020 – New Orleans, Louisiana
You looked over at the scoreboard, the score reading 42-25 just as the clock was winding down with only a few minutes left in the 4th quarter.
“He did it, he really fucking did it,” you whispered as tears started to fall from your eyes, your friends all jumping up and down around you and screaming at the top of their lungs.
“3..2..1,” Lydia screamed as purple and yellow confetti filled the stadium. The LSU tigers had just won the national championship, Joe had just won the national championship. After years of hard work and dedication, never backing down from a challenge, his dreams had finally come true, and you got to be apart of it and witness it.
After watching the trophy presentation and the celebrations on the field from the stands, you made your way down to the field, hoping to get a moment with Joe before he was pulled in for media.
You made your way through the crowds of reporters, players, and families in search of him, but you literally could not figure out where he was.
“Did he already get pulled in for media?” you asked yourself as you looked around the field, your smile dropping.
Suddenly, you felt two arms snake around your waist and pull you back into a warm embrace. “What the F-”.
“Calm down, Y/N, it’s just me,” he says, swaying you back and forth. You could recognize that voice anywhere, even in the loudest settings. You place your hands on his and turn your head up, meeting his baby-blue eyes.
“Joe,” you whisper, feeling tears fill your eyes again.
“Hi,” he mumbled before you flipped around in his arms and looped your arms around his neck, pulling him in for a hug.
“You did it,” you said, crying into his shoulder. “I’m s- so proud of you,”.
“Hey, Hey, why are you crying?” he asked, rubbing circles on your back for comfort.
You pulled your face out from his shoulder and said, “Because, you’re a national champion now, Silly. This is what you’ve been working for and it finally happened. I’ve been fortunate enough to be by your side through the whole thing and can’t help but get emotional when my best friend just had his dream come true,”.
He stays silent for a few moments before he pushes your head back into his chest. “Thank you. For everything,” he says, his grip on your waist getting tighter. He remembered how you had been nothing but supportive of his dreams since you met. There were days back at OSU when he would come back to his dorm after practice, feeling shitty and lost since nothing felt like it was going his way, and you would drop whatever you were doing at the moment to go and comfort him since he didn’t want to be alone. Those many late nights you spent trying to help him study and catch up on his work so that he could focus on football during the day. And nothing would ever come close to how you refused to miss a single one of his games, even if you were watching back in Ohio. He remembers you telling him that at your friend's bachelorette party, you had the game pulled up on your phone and sat at the bar the entire night watching instead of doing shots and dancing with your friends.
The day he decided that he was going to LSU was hard for both of you. He could tell how you were holding back from telling him how you really felt, which was incredibly sad and upset, but you knew he had to do this for himself, and he watched as you plastered a smile on your face and cheered him on, even if it broke your heart.
“You are the most strongest, dedicated, and talented person I know. I am so proud of youuu,” you squeal into his chest.
Joe felt fireworks in his heart as he listened to you go on and on about how well he did in the game. Those feelings he had for you were so hard to avoid, and right now he felt like ripping the bandaid off and telling you how he felt straight up. But he couldn’t. He wanted nothing more than to kiss your soft lips right now and tell you that he loved you more than anything in the world, but he just couldn’t. Instead, he just enjoyed the feeling of you with him right now during one of the happiest moments in his life. There was no need to ruin it with his pipe dream.
End of flashback
You spent a few moments fixing your hair and washing your makeup off before turning off the lights and joining him back outside, but you stopped as you realized something.
“Fuck, I don’t have shorts on,” you realize. You were just in his shirt, your white lace panties, and your socks, and didn’t know what to do. The shirt was big enough to cover your upper thighs and if you avoided any movement that caused the shirt to ride up, you would be fine.
“He won’t care regardless,” you whisper as you shake your head and leave the bathroom.
While you were changing, Joe had changed into a pair of sweat shorts and a short-sleeved tee and was sitting on the bed, scrolling through his phone.
“Aren’t you cold? It’s December,” you giggle as you join him in the room again.
He looks up from his phone, heat rising up his cheeks as he takes in the sight of your bare legs and your body which was clothed by one of his shirts. Your cheeks were a little rosy, definitely an effect of all the alcohol you consumed. A feeling of nervousness now filled his body as he watched you put your stuff down on his table, the way your hips swayed from side to side, and how your hair bounced with each step. He realized that he hadn’t given you any shorts or boxers, so you were definitely just in your underwear right now, and that made him want to pass out. Why did he feel like a teenage boy all of a sudden? He had seen you in pajamas many times so why was he feeling like this? Whatever it was, it definitely was not helping the thoughts he had about your relationship earlier in the night because here you were, standing in his room, looking absolutely incredible.
“You tell me,” he says as he raises his eyebrows.
“Fair point,” you laugh as you walk over to his bookshelf, a photo frame catching your eye. He carefully watches you as you walk over to the picture, his heart feeling like it is about to beat out of his chest as he realizes what you are looking at.
It was a photo of the two of you from one of his games at LSU. He was looking down at you, a huge grin on his face as if he was laughing at something you said. You were looking back up at him, smiling at his expression. You both were almost lost in each other’s eyes in this photo, something you hadn’t noticed before. This was Joe’s favorite photo of the two of you and he had managed to keep it to himself, up until now.
Flashback to 2019 - LSU
You had flown into Baton Rouge early this morning and were going to surprise Joe at his game tonight since he had no idea you were coming. He had been begging you for weeks to come down for a weekend to see him because he missed you, but you kept pushing it off with lazy excuses so you could pull one on him. But little did he know, you had been planning a trip to see him for the past month.
He caught a glimpse of you in the stands earlier, his entire face lighting up and his heart soaring. He thought he was dreaming for a second as he saw you sitting with his mom, wearing his number, and screaming his name, You waved over at him before the game started, but didn’t get a chance to talk to him as he was pulled into pregame warmups. Now, you were waiting in the tunnel as the game finished, eagerly waiting to see your best friend.
You were chatting with Joe’s Mom as you waited for him to come out from the locker room. A few minutes later, you heard an all too familiar voice behind you.
“You fucking liar,” he laughs.
You spin around, your heart skipping a beat as you see Joe standing in front of you.
You walk over to him, launching yourself into his open arms and letting out a squeal as he tightly wraps them around your waist, slightly lifting you off the ground and swaying you from side to side. “I mm- missed you,” you sputtered, trying to hold back your emotions.
“And you said you were too busy with Jake’s cousin's wedding this weekend,” he says, his hand rubbing your lower back.
“Please, as if I would go to the wedding of my ex’s cousin rather than flying down to see my best friend who I haven’t seen in 5 months,” you say as he lets go of you, slowly sliding you back down to the floor.
“Ex?” He asked.
“Oh yeah. I forgot to tell you over the phone. We broke up,” you say as you meet his eyes.
“Really?” He asks, trying hard not to smile. He felt bad that you and Jake broke up, but part of him felt a little happy that there wasn’t any other guy in your life taking his space at the moment. Jake got to do everything Joe would do with you but couldn’t because he was away. The movie marathons, game nights, trying new restaurants, arcade runs, shopping, building legos, literally everything, he got to do, and it made Joe a little jealous.
He never really got too involved in your dating life. He felt like it was uncharted territory since he was your best friend and a guy. It would be a little weird if he was getting involved. He also didn’t want to give the guys the wrong idea about your friendship. Although, he did have moments where he wished that it was a little more than just a friendship.
“Yeah,” you sigh. “Just didn’t feel right. He didn’t seem invested in the relationship lately anyway,”.
“Mr. Lovebombing not being invested? Shocker,” he teases. You felt your smile drop a little bit at his teasing. Yes, you were over him, but it still stung a little bit since you were pretty unlucky in the boyfriend department and this was just another addition.
He immediately felt bad for saying that, knowing how you felt about relationships, so he pulled you into a side hug. “Sorry, that was jerky,” he mumbles.
“It’s okay,” you say as you pat his chest. “I should’ve seen it coming,”.
“Well if it makes you feel better, I never liked him anyway, he laughs.
“Joe,” you say as you playfully swat his arm while pulling away from the hug.
“Hey, can you blame me? He doesn’t like ‘The Office’. That’s a crime,” he deadpans.
“I missed you so much,” you laughed, staring deeply into his eyes. God you missed him. You missed his cheery attitude, his million-dollar smile, and the comfort you’d feel when you were with him. Joe could turn your mood around in an instant and make you forget about everything bad in your life. No other guy could ever make you feel the way he did, it was an irreplicable feeling.
“Me too,” he sighed. “5 months is way too long and you’re so far away,” he mumbled, looking down at his feet.
“I know but hey, I’m here now. And even if it’s for a few days, I’m here,” you say, gently rubbing his bicep.
He looks back up at you with a smile, “Yeah, you are,”. He looked into your chocolaty eyes, searching them for a few moments, hoping to find something in them that he’d been waiting for, but he was interrupted by your laughter.
“They might have to force me onto the plane back to Ohio. I’ve been here for a day and I don’t want to go back,” you giggle.
“I can sneak you into my apartment,” he shrugs. “Just act like you’re on the football team and you’re golden,” he jokes.
While you two were talking, Joe’s mom snapped a few photos of your reunion, neither of you noticing the camera snaps.
“Oh yeahh. I’ll totally fit right in,” you say, shaking your head. “I can be your new star Wide Receiver,”.
“Ja’Marr and Justin might have a problem with that,” he shrugged.
“They won’t when they see how great of a duo we make, on the field and off,” you wink.
 End of flashback
“I haven’t seen this one,” you smile as you look back at him. “Gatekeeping, Burrow?”.
“It’s one of my faves so yes, yes I am gatekeeping,” he shrugs.
“Well, I’m stealing it,” you say, picking up the frame.
“Uhh, no you’re not,” he says, slowly standing up from the bed.
“Ohh yes, I am,” you tease as you turn around to meet his eyes. He walks over to you as you slowly walk backward, moving away from him.
“Okayyy, I think it’s time for bed,” he says as he reaches out to grab you, but you take another leap back towards the door.
“Nopeee,” you smirk. “Catch me if you can,” you say, sticking your tongue out at him before running out the door.
“We are not about to do this,” Joe mumbles as he runs out the door, following you as you run through the halls of his house. Giggles and Laughter echo throughout the house as you run down the stairs, looking back a couple of times to see if he is still there, and he is. Even though he was exhausted, he was enjoying chasing you throughout the halls of his house. The usually quiet halls were now filled with your shrieks and giggles, a sound that he loved to hear. You run over to the kitchen, standing on the other side of the island as Joe runs to the couch to grab a pillow.
“Joe!” you scream as he grabs a couch pillow, launching it straight at your head but you quickly duck.
“You asked for it,” he laughed.
“Oh, it’s on,” you grin as you place the photo on the island, making sure it didn’t get caught in the battle.
“Whatcha gonna do?” he smirks as he places his hands on his hips, bouncing from side to side.
“Hmm, I don’t know,” you say as you slowly walk over to the comfy chair next to the dining table, grabbing a stray couch pillow and hiding it behind your back.
He notices you hiding a pillow behind your back, so he leans down and grabs another one. While he was doing this, you ran over and started hitting him, gently of course, with the soft pillow.
“Got youu,” you giggle as you smack him with a pillow repeatedly.
“Nope,” he smirks as he grabs his pillow and swings at your abdomen. His strength was unmatched so the hit sent you back a little, almost causing you to fall over.
“Oh, now you’re done for,” you grin as you attack him with the soft pillow and he does the same to you. Giggles and squeals filled the room as you playfully battled it out, neither of you willing to give up. But soon, the teasing turned into a full-blown pillow fight as you both unleashed your inner children, swinging your pillows with wild abandon. Feathers flew everywhere, coating the floor in a soft, white blanket. A couple of swings later, you catch Joe off guard, tackling him to the ground as you place your legs on each side of his hips, caging him in on the floor.
You hold your pillow above your head in mock triumph. He wriggled beneath you, trying to grab the pillow away, but you held it just out of reach, teasing and taunting him.
“I winnn,” you laugh as you look down, smiling at Joe's disheveled hair and flushed cheeks. You were so caught up in the childish moment that you didn’t even realize you were straddling his hips right now, and his hands were resting firmly on your hips. Your shirt had ridden up your thighs a little and you were definitely showing a little too much down there, but you were so caught up in the moment that you couldn’t care less.
“Zoomies?” Joe giggles as he looks into your eyes.
“Zoomies,” you nod as you throw the pillow to the side, trying to catch your breath. A million thoughts were now rushing into your head at once. You were literally on top of him right now, but he didn’t even seem bothered by it. It was like he was enjoying it. Was he enjoying it? You move your hand down, placing each one on his biceps and digging your nails into his soft skin.
Joe was trying so hard not to say something about how you were on top of him right now. He was just enjoying the sight of you above, as silly and sultry as that sounded. He looked down and noticed your bare thighs and the shirt riding up and you seemingly weren’t wearing anything under it other than your underwear, just like he had thought. God, you just looked so pretty and sexy, he thought to himself. Your hair was messy and your cheeks were blush pink, but you still looked gorgeous. You seemed so relaxed and comfortable, and he was trying so hard not to ruin the moment by saying something stupid.
“You look so pretty,” he thought out loud, his face turning red as he realized he said that to you.
“Thank you,” you smile back, internally screaming at his comment. Was he being extra affectionate tonight, or were you just delusional? You definitely looked like a mess right now, and in no way did you look pretty, but his compliment still made your heart soar. A soft yawn left your lips as you rubbed your eyes, now feeling the ‘crash’ part of your hangover.
“Crash time?” he asks as he rubs your thighs, your stomach fluttering at the contact. Why was he being so lovey-dovey right now? His soft hands massaged the plush skin of your thighs as you stared deeply into his baby blues, trying to make sense of what was going on.
“Yeah,” you say as another yawn escapes your lips. You get off of him, slowly standing up as you are feeling the aftermath of the zoomies. Joe holds out his hands just in case you fall over as he gets up.
“You can sleep in my bed and I can take the couch. The guest bedroom is kinda a mess right now since I’m using it for storage until they finish the basement,” he says.
“Hell no. I don’t wanna kick you out of your own bed,” you say as you pick up the pillows from the floor and put them back on the couch, your legs a little wobbly and your head feeling a little woozy. “I’ll take the couch,”.
“No way. You take the bed,” he says as he picks up the stray feathers from the floor.
“Not happening, Joseph,” you mumble as you help him gather the feathers.
He heaves out a sigh, “I’m too tired to fight you on this. Why don’t we just share it?”.
Your heart skips a beat as you look up at him, the look on his face telling you he is 100% serious. Although you and Joe had been friends for years, you had never slept in the same bed together.
“As long as you’re not a kicker,” he jokes.
“Please, I sleep like a baby,” you say as you walk over to the trash can, throwing the feathers into the bin. “Besides, I’m more of a cuddler and not a kicker,”.
“So that’s a yes?” He asks, trying not to sound too eager, especially at the mention of cuddling.
“Fineee,” you smile. “If you insist,”.
Internally, Joe was screaming. He told himself that he’d let things flow the way they were and let things happen naturally, that’s if something were to happen. He didn’t know if he was just reading into things a little too much, but was it just him or were you acting a little different around him?
Your heart felt like it was about to beat out of your chest. There was no reason for you to get so worked up over sharing a bed with Joe. It was nothing, just you sleeping right next to him, together under the covers, so incredibly close to his body. It was definitely nothing.
A little later, you're getting ready for bed as Joe brings out an extra pillow for you. You walk over to the bed, open the soft covers, and slide in. His bed was so comfortable; so soft and like a cloud. He turns off the lights and plugs in his phone before joining you in bed. Your heart was beating so fast as he moved into the bed next to you. There was no reason for this to be weird, but you were making it weird.
You moved back against the pillow, sliding down the bed, and pulling the covers up to protect you from the chilly room and to hide your nervousness.
“Did you have fun tonight?” You asked Joe as you stared up at the ceiling.
“Actually? I did. All thanks to you,” he said.
“Really?” You giggled, moving your head to look at him. You could barely make out his face in the darkness, but you could tell he was looking at you.
“Yup. You make everything more enjoyable and bearable for me,” he said, turning his head back over and staring up at the ceiling. “Did you have fun? I hope these football things aren’t getting too repetitive for you,”.
“Not at all repetitive. You know I love doing this stuff with you. I needed a break from life and this was just the thing. Thanks for bringing me with you,” you smiled.
“You don’t have to thank me, Y/N. You know I’m always here when you need something, even if it’s an escape from life for a day,” he says as he moves his hand down to yours, entwining your fingers together as he gives your hand a soft squeeze. Butterflies filled your stomach at his soft touch and meaningful words.
“Besides, I enjoy having you as my permanent plus 1,” he laughs.
“Permanent?” You ask, feeling the heat rise up your body again.
“Yeah,” he sighs. “If you haven’t noticed, I’m not having much luck in the girlfriend department,”.
“Not saying you’re filling in those shoes and are a filler,” he says, quickly trying to soften his words because of how jerky it sounded. “I just like having you with me all the time, Ya know? That’s prob why people think you’re my girlfriend”.
“It’s okay, Joe. I know what you mean,” you say, adding a fake laugh into the mix. Your stomach did a somersault when he said that. Were you really about to have this conversation about that topic right now?
“But please, I could name at least 100 girls who would be standing at your doorstep in an instant,” you giggle.
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I want any of those girls,” he says, craning his head over to face you, his hand still holding yours, now tighter.
“I want someone who matches my vibe. Someone who makes me feel normal and doesn’t constantly remind me that I’m a millionaire quarterback. Someone that I can take home to my parents and can feel comfortable around. Someone who can enjoy the simplicity of playing Smash-Bros and building Legos as a date. Someone that appreciates the real me and not the superficial flashy shit,” he says. As he was saying all of this, the girl he pictured in his mind was you. He was describing you. You were what he wanted.
“You didn’t find that with Stella?” You asked, completely oblivious to what he was implying.
“Nah. She was great at first but as time went on I realized that she was more into the lifestyle of dating a football player than the actual relationship part. And I also didn’t feel fireworks with her,” he said.
“Ah yes. Fireworks. Just like your Mom told us,” you remembered. His mom had told you at dinner a few years ago that when she met his dad, she felt fireworks. Fireworks are what you feel when you meet the right person, according to Robin. You hadn’t felt fireworks with any other guy other than Joe, but you never told that to anyone. And he felt the same. He felt fireworks every time he was with you and he’d never felt that with any girl.
“Yeah so I’ll probably die alone, he jokes.
“Please, we’ll die alone together,” you say as you take your hand out of hold and playfully shove his shoulder.
“I’m assuming there’s no guys on your radar?” He wonders, hoping you would say no.
“Nope. There hasn’t been any since Noah,” you replied.
“That was 8 months ago,” Joe gasped.
“Why do you sound so surprised?” you laughed. “You know I’ve never had luck with guys. None of them match my vibe and want something else out of the relationship that I don’t agree with. I want someone real, genuine, and serious,”.
“I could name 100 guys that would be at your doorstep in an instant,” he says, echoing your words from earlier.
“Doesn’t mean I want any of them,” you say, echoing his words.
“Fair point,” he laughs.
“Yeah. So I’ll die alone too,” you joke.
“Technically not alone if we die alone together. We’ll have each other,” he said.
“I wouldn’t want it any other way,” you yawned, feeling another wave of tiredness
“Sleepy time?” Joe chuckles.
“Mhmmm,” you groan as you stretch out your arms. “Don't ever let me drink that much again,” you mumble as you pull the covers higher.
“You got it. Goodnight, Y/N,” he smiles as he turns his head over to you.
“Night, Joey,” you smile before turning over and letting out a deep breath.
20 minutes passed by and you were still wide awake, not finding comfort in his bed which was odd considering it was like a cloud. Your thoughts about you and Joe were also keeping you from sleeping. Ever since your sister mentioned that you were acting like Joe’s girlfriend yesterday, your head was spiraling and the alcohol from tonight was making it worse. And the conversation you just had with him was making it even more confusing. Sure, you did some girlfriend-type things, but you knew he would never look at you that way. He saw you as a friend and that’s all, at least that’s what you thought.
Suddenly, you felt Joe’s hand creep around your waist, pulling you into his chest. Your heart stopped and your body froze from the sudden movement. What the actual fuck was going on.
“Joe?” You mumbled, not meeting his eyes because you were literally about to scream.
“Hm?” He mumbled, half asleep.
“Your arm,” you whispered.
“I’m cold,” he muttered as he held you tighter. “And you’re so warm and comfy,”.
Your heartbeat picked up again as you felt his big hand sprawled out against your belly, not to mention that your ass was literally on his crotch right now. His body, although saying he felt cold, was hot. So very hot.
“Is this weird?” he mumbles, opening his eyes. He really hoped that this didn’t weird you out.
You stayed silent for a few seconds, not knowing what to say or do. You didn’t feel weird oddly enough as that sounded. Something about this felt natural and so right.
“It’s okay,” you softly spoke. “I’m good,”.
Joe smiled at your response, feeling like he was flying through the clouds right now as he was practically cuddling with his favorite person. Everything about this just felt so right, and he wasn’t the only one who thought so.
“Good, you said you were a cuddler so I hope this is comfy,” he mumbled.
You felt your heart exploding as he moved closer to you. His arm around you felt like a safety blanket, protecting you from everything on the outside. A comfortable embrace that you wished you had around you forever. It felt right.
“Trust me, it’s perfect,” you whisper, closing your eyes and losing yourself in his embrace, too tired from the night to fight back.
A few moments later, you were fast asleep, finally feeling comfortable and it was all because of him.
The next morning
Your eyes slowly flutter open as the golden light shines through the windows. You reach out to grab your phone, the time reading 7:35 AM. You felt your head slowly start to throb, a sure result of your hangover from last night. You were just about to get up but you felt a heavy force holding you down.
“What the-” you whisper as you look down, noticing Joe’s hand is still wrapped around your stomach. You had forgotten that you were at his house and in his bed, and he was still wrapped around you.
“Uh oh,” you whisper. You turned your head around and saw Joe sound asleep, looking so adorable as his hair was sprawled out against the pillow and soft snores coming from his mouth. You remember that he brought you here after the party last night, which meant you had no way of getting back home. You didn’t want to wake him up because first, he looked so comfortable right now, and second, you didn’t know how to talk to him after what happened last night. Those thoughts you had about your relationship with Joe only got stronger after the night you had. Although nothing like that happened, your feelings for him surely got more complicated.
“Don’t leave me,” you heard Joe mumble in his sleep.
Your eyes widened at his soft words, was he talking about you? You turned your head around to see if he was awake, but he was still sound asleep and snoring again. He must’ve been sleeptalking, you thought to yourself.
You pulled out your phone again, opening up your messages to beg your friend Lydia to come pick you up. She usually got up early on Saturdays for Pilates so she should respond.
You: emergency! please come pick me up
Lydia: good morning to you too lol. everything alright?
You: everything’s fine I just uhh need a ride home
Lydia: home? where are you??
You: joe’s house
Lydia: oh 👀
You sighed at your friend's text. Now was not the time to have this conversation and you knew exactly what she was going to say. You and Lydia had known each other since Ohio State so she pretty much knew everything about you and Joe’s friendship since you were all a part of the same friend group. She was a huge advocate for you and Joe to be a couple back at OSU, but you always shut her down before she could get too matchmaker-ish. She claimed that she saw something “special” between you two, but your ignorant ass brushed it off over and over, just like how you were doing now.
You: just pls come pick me up
Lydia: on my way ;) be there in 10
You let out a relieved sigh as you carefully peeled Joe’s hand off from your waist, quickly replacing it with a pillow so he wouldn’t feel the difference, and thankfully he didn’t. You walked into the bathroom, grabbed your clothes from last night, and quickly exited his room. You glanced back at him for a few seconds, taking note of the smile on his adorable face and his arms wrapped tightly around the pillow that he thought was your waist.
“Man,” you whispered to yourself as you turned back around and made your way down the stairs.
You waited by the door for Lydia as your mind was exploding with thoughts now that you were sober enough to process everything. What the hell happened last night? Was Joe just being the usual Joe because something felt different about his mannerisms, words, and attitude toward you the entire night? And even this morning, his arm was still around your waist and seemingly wasn’t planning on moving it.
You heard a car pull up and peeked out the window, seeing that it was your bestie. “Thank fuck,” you sighed as you had to escape the scene. You don’t know what you would’ve said to him once he had woken up. Especially since you were 100% in your senses now.
You quickly opened the door, softly shutting it on your way out. You ran over to her car and hopped inside without a second thought.
“Damn, you’re in a rush,” she laughs as she locks the door after you shut it.
“No rush. Just uhh, need to get home,” you say as you buckle your seatbelt.
“Whatever you say,” Lydia giggles as she puts the car in drive. “So how was it?” She asks.
“How was what?” You say, raising your eyebrows.
“The sex, dummy,” she laughs.
“What?” You shriek as your eyes widen.
“Don't play dumb with me, Y/N. Is he as good in bed as he is on the field?”.
You stare at her for a few quiet seconds before breaking out into a fit of laughter.
“Oh my god,” you laugh as you lean forward.
“Took you long enough. I’ve been saying this would happen for yeaaaars,” she boasts. “Why else would you need me to come to pick you up from Joe’s house at 8 am while you’re wearing what definitely is his t-shirt and I assume no shorts and just panties underneath?” She adds.
“You’ve got it all wrong,” you wheeze. “I was super drunk last night from the Christmas party and he just brought me to his place,”.
“Ahh, so drunken sex? Even better,” she teases as she winks at you.
“Lydia, we didn’t hook up,” you say, your laughter dying down. “He just gave me his shirt so I wouldn’t have to sleep in my outfit from the party,”.
“Okayyy sure, but that still doesn’t explain why you ran out of his house so early in the morning and why he couldn’t take you home,” she said.
“That’s a long story,” you say, taking a deep breath and falling back into your seat.
“We’ve got time,” she laughs.
“I don’t really know,” you breathe out, staring up at the ceiling of the car. “My sister mentioned the other day that I’m acting like Joe’s girlfriend and it just got me thinking,” you sigh.
“Oh?” She says, a smile forming on her face.
“And last night was weird. I feel like he was being extra affectionate but I don’t know if that was just the alcohol in my system messing with me. And he was talking to me about how he hadn’t found the right girl yet, how he brings me everywhere and that’s why people think we’re dating, and how I’m his ‘permanent plus 1’ because he likes having me around,”.
“Ohhhhh?” Lydia drags out, her face scrunching up as she tries to hold back from saying something about it.
“Don’t get too excited. I already knew that the general public thought that we were together, but I thought we were over that,”.
“You won’t be able to get over that until you admit the truth. And the truth is that you like him. Like more than just a friend,” Lydia blurts out. “I see it, the public sees it, and I honestly think Joe sees it too,”.
You stay silent for a few seconds, a little taken aback by her observation and not knowing how to respond to her since you can barely make sense of your feelings.
“Oh my god? You like him don’t you?!” She yells as she looks over at you.
“I don’t knowwww,” you said. “There’s a lot of thoughts in my head right now and I don’t know what to think. I feel like he’s been acting differently around me, like more lovey-dovey differently but I don’t know if I’m reading into it too much,” you respond.
“Okay, well what are the thoughts in your head saying?”.
“That I think I like him? Or still like him I guess. But I don’t know if he feels the same and I don’t wanna say anything because if he doesn’t, it’ll fuck up our friendship and I can’t lose him,” you say.
“He’s so sweet and perfect. Joe knows me better than anyone and knows exactly how to cheer me up, calm me down, and make me have fun. I’ve never met anyone like him before and being by his side since day 1 has been a dream but also crazy. And the fact that he hasn't changed since we met is even more crazy. Even with all the money, fame, and attention, he's still Joe. My Joe," you smile. “The same adorable, nerdy, football player that was my lab partner in chemistry freshman year,”.
“Girl, you definitely love him,” your friend says, looking over at you with a straight face.
“Love?” You ask, your heart skipping a beat.
“Yes, love. You’ve known each other since freshman year of college and if I’m not mistaken, those feelings have been there since then. You’re doing the same thing you did back then, letting your overthinking get in the way. You’re too afraid of losing him as a friend, but Y/N, what if he has the same feelings as you? This isn’t a matter of liking a boy, it’s a matter of you being in love with someone who you’ve had feelings for since you both met. That’s years and years of unanswered feelings that were being built up inside of you and spilling out right now,”.
Were you in love with Joe? Have you been in love with him all this time? You find yourself smiling as you imagine you and Joe as a couple. Waking up to his adorable smile and sexy morning voice every day, going on cute little dates with him every week around town, kissing him good luck before every game, getting to curl up on the couch with him after every game, and talking about anything and everything together for hours on end without any limitations. It all sounded like a dream, a dream you wished was reality.
Lydia looked over at your face, seeing you with a huge grin on your face and a blush creeping up on your cheeks.
“I knew it. You love him,” she says as she playfully shoves your shoulder. "There is a reason why none of your relationships work out. The person who you've been waiting for has been right in front of you this entire time,".
“Again, I don’t know,” you giggle. “I don’t wanna say anything to him because I don’t know if he feels the same way,”.
“I get that, I do. You don’t want to risk your friendship, but here’s my advice. Go with the flow. If something’s going to happen, it will. If nothing’s gonna happen, it won’t. Let things unfold naturally and if he’s there and waiting for you at the door, open it and never let him leave,” she says. “And I have a feeling that he’s gonna be at the door,” she adds.
You spent a few seconds thinking about her advice. She was right, if you weren’t overthinking it and he really did feel the same way about you, he would be there. And if you were overthinking it, and he didn’t feel the same, you would accept it, bury those feelings for real this time, and keep the ball rolling.
You just had to wait and see.
To be continued!

August 1, 2024 - Second day of pads
After my mental walk through memory lane sparked by Joe’s hair, we cuddled in bed for a few more minutes before Joe got up to shower.
Last night, after quite a few rounds of a purely blissful workout, Joe and I were too tired to shower, so he was going it now. Since he was up early to go to camp, I was in no rush to get out of bed, so I declined his offer to join him.
Joe showered fairly quickly and came out of the bathroom wearing a random t-shirt and his pink shorts. He walked over to the bed, a grin on his face as he pressed a kiss to my forehead.
“I’ll be back home right after practice ends. I don't have any meetings or sessions today.” - Joe
“Alrighty. See ya later, I love you.” - you
“I love you too. Byeeee.” - Joe
Joe drawled the word out as he grabbed his practice bag and disappeared down the hallway. I laid there just grinning at his adorableness.
After staring at the doorway for a few moments, I rolled over onto Joe’s pillow like I always did when he was gone. I loved burrowing my nose into the fabric to smell his familiar scent, something that always helped if I was dealing with separation anxiety.
-
An hour later, I had just stepped out of the shower when my phone vibrated on the counter.
bengals added to their story
I immediately picked up my phone and clicked the notification. My eyes widened at the video of Joe walking into the practice fields. That black compression shirt was one of the hottest things he could wear, along with his cut-off football pants turned into shorts. God, he looks mouthwatering. After staring for a few minutes, a thought entered my head.
What if I went to surprise him?
Joe and I had been planning on soft launching our engagement for a while now. Every idea we came up with, we didn't like. An Instagram post didn't feel like an us way of announcing it. And Joe didn't want to just blurt it out in a press conference.
What if I went, surprised Joe, and wore my ring?
I couldn't help but giggle when I looked over at it in my jewelry dish. Though I had told Joe I didn't need anything big and flashy, that’s exactly what he gave me. The gorgeous diamond glittered in the light coming from overhead, and you couldn't miss it from a mile away.
After I made my mind up, I quickly threw on a pair of jean shorts and Joe’s yellow Bengals shirt. I blow-dried my hair, did light makeup after, and then pulled my hair back into a slicked-back ponytail. I curled the pony as a final touch, grabbed my lipgloss that I knew was Joe’s favorite scent, and sprayed my fav perfume on.
I was walking out of the bathroom when I stopped dead in my tracks, honestly unable to fathom how I almost forgot the star of the show.
Doing a quick jog back to the bathroom, I grabbed my engagement ring and slipped it on, my eyes going wide when I saw that my curling iron was still on.
“Oopsies.” - you chuckled to yourself
After that, it was smooth sailing all the to the garage and into my car. As soon as my hand touched the steering wheel, I remembered when Joe surprised me with it.
——
Flashback - October, 2023
It was a normal October day, or so I thought, I was returning home after yet another shitty day at work, but a smile pulled on my lips when I pulled into the driveway to see Joe standing at the front door, waiting for me.
He was wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt, looking incredibly adorable with his hood pulled over his head. I was quick to get out of the car to run up to him, not even paying any mind to park in the garage like normal.
“Hi, baby.” - Joe grinned
“What are you up to?” - you laughed
Joe just shrugged with a smile, wrapping his arms around my waist and holding me close to his warm chest. I could feel his rapid heartbeat, but I just figured it was because he was excited that I was home.
I leaned in to give him a sweet kiss, our lips staying entwined as Joe pulled me into the house and shut the door.
He ended up pulling away out of necessity, both of us a little out of breath from the kiss.
“I have a surprise for you in the garage.” - Joe
I gasped, my hands lightly slapping his chest out of excitement. I tried to think about what the surprise could be, especially with it being in the garage. Joe had just signed his contract extension last month, and with the load of money that had just come into his possession, he was unpredictable.
“Did you get the patio furniture I was looking at the other day?” - you gasped
Joe shrugged, purposely grinning cheekily to lead you on to think that you had guessed it. You couldn't be farther off, though.
A moment later, Joe moved to stand behind me. He put one muscular arm around my waist to guide me before covering my eyes with one big hand.
“Joeyy.” - you giggled
“Just trust me.” - Joe grinned
I did just that, and Joe guided me to the garage, pausing for a moment to open the door before leading me down the steps.
“Okay ready?” - Joe
“Mhm!!” - you
Joe felt a smile pull at his lips at how excited I was getting. With his arm still around my waist and his hand still on my eyes, Joe leaned forward and turned his head to the side to kiss my cheek.
“Three… two… one…” - Joe
Dramatically, Joe removed his hands from my eyes and jumped to the side to watch my reaction.
Letting out a loud gasp, I immediately slapped my hands onto my cheeks when I saw what was in front of me. It was a car. A fucking Porsche, to be more specific. It was my favorite color, blue, and one of the prettiest shades of it at that.
“Joe! You did not!” - you
“But I diddd.” - Joe smirked
After staring at the car of my literal dreams for a few more moments, tears started to form in my eyes. Joe, my boyfriend, who just signed a huge contract, made his first big purchase of it on me.
I turned and looked at him before running into his arms. Joe immediately hugged me tight, slowly swaying us from side to side as he let me cry into his chest.
“I hope these are happy tears.” - Joe nervously chuckled
“They're major happy tears, Joey.” - you sobbed
Joe pulled my head away from his chest before turning around and reaching into the mudroom. He grabbed the key off of the little hanger, handing it to me with a proud smile on his face.
He loved every bit of this. He was making the amount of money where he could buy his favorite person the car of her dreams, and he had never felt so proud of himself.
“Go look.” - Joe smiled
I unlocked the car, opened the door, and somehow cried harder when I saw the interior. Joe seriously picked everything that I would've.
Before I even got a good look, I turned back around and moved back into Joe’s arms. Joe chuckled as he held me close, rubbing my back and peppering my head with kisses.
“Thank you… so much.” - you cried
“You’re so welcome, baby.” - Joe
It took me a few minutes to collect myself, but once I wasn't steadily crying, Joe and I got into the car so he could show me how to work some stuff.
“Oh, fuck. I forgot I got the massaging front seats too.” - Joe
“These things massage?!?” - you
“Yup. They're also ventilated and heated.” - Joe grinned
He really decked me out.
“Why’d you get all of these add-ons for my car when you just got original everything for your own?” - you
“Uhm, that's obvious. I want you to have everything and more, so I'm gonna get you everything possible. Did you see the all-black wheels??” - Joe
I nodded, feeling a little emotional when Joe hooked his phone up to the car and played a favorite song of mine lately.
Joe and I giggled, using our hands as fake microphones as we sang You Belong With Me by Taylor Swift. I had my head leaned over onto his shoulder as I sang, lovesick grins on both of our faces.
“I love you.” - Joe grinned
“I love you more.” - you smiled
——
Back to present day
By the time my walk down memory lane was over, I was pulling into the parking lot of the stadium. My eyes widened when I realized I somehow drove here completely zoned out.
“I won't question it.” - you mumbled
As I walked over to the practice fields, I noticed my favorite security guard already smiling at me from a few feet away.
“Hey, Freddie!!” - you grinned
“Hello, Miss y/n.” - Freddie
Freddie waved, and without thinking, I waved back with my left hand. Freddie’s eyes went wide, and I giggled when I looked down at my hand to see what gave him that reaction.
“Is that a ring I see??” - Freddie
“Yes, sir.” - you grinned
Once I got closer to him, he put his hand out, and I hovered my hand over his. Freddie examined the hefty ring on my finger with a smile on his face.
“I’m glad he finally did it. And might I add, Mr. Burrow did exceptionally picking this out. This ring is huge, sweetie.” - Freddie
“I’m glad he did it too, and yes, Joe did amazing. I catch myself staring at it all of the time.” - you
“Does he know you're coming?” - Freddie
I shook my head no, and Freddie personally escorted me over to the family and friends area. He knew I got a lot of unwarranted hate, and without Joe knowing I was here and keeping eyes on me, he wanted to make sure I got over to the restricted area safely.
When I first got over to some of the other wags, I couldn't help but feel overwhelmed by the amount of adorable babies there were.
Gracie McPherson, Evan’s wife, let me hold their daughter Merritt, and I felt myself melt when I held her in my arms.
Morgan Wilson was standing to the side, silently smiling as she assessed the situation before her eyes fell on the ring on my finger. She let out a loud gasp, making all of us look over at her.
“Everything okay?” - Gracie
“Y/N… what is on your left hand?!” - Morgan
Gracie’s neck snapped in my direction before she looked down at my ring finger, making her gasp as well.
I couldn't help but laugh as Gracie, Morgan, and a couple of the other girls all looked at me with their jaws dropped open. They were waiting for me to say something or at least confirm their thoughts.
“We’re engaged.” - you grinned
All of the girls squealed, Gracie even getting Merritt out of my arms in back in her stroller so that she could pull me into a hug.
“You’re gonna be a wife!!!!” - Gracie
“Oh my gosh! Here comes Mrs. Y/N Burrow, everyone!” - Morgan squealed
We all spent a few minutes giggling, all of the girls congratulating me and poking fun at Joe for finally getting down on one knee.
The rest of the practice was kind of boring. Nothing super significant happened until the practice was finally over. Sam came over to say hi to Jess, his face lighting up when he saw me, knowing I was here to surprise Joe.
“Oh my god! Wait, I'll go get him.” - Sam
Sam gave Jess a quick kiss before running off to get Joe, who was signing autographs. From far away, I saw Joe’s face light up when Sam pointed in the direction of the family area.
Joe signed for a few more minutes before jogging over to me. I giggled when I saw that he was trying to suppress a grin.
When Joe finally made it over to me, he let the grin take over his lips. There was a rope between us, and Joe crouched underneath it.
God, he looks perfect. Joe’s wearing his black cut-off compression shirt with his little white shorts.
“What’re you doing here??” - Joe grinned
“Wanted to surprise you.” - you grinned
“Well, you sure did.” - Joe chuckled
I reached out with my left hand, putting it on Joe’s chest. Joe looked down at my hand and smiled when he noticed that I had my engagement ring on.
“Is this our soft hard launch?” - Joe
“I think soooo. All of the girls were freaking out when they saw it.” - you giggled
Joe’s cheeks were starting to hurt from how hard he was smiling. He was over the moon that it would be public that we were getting married, along with the excitement that I had surprised him.
“Can I get a kiss?” - Joe
“I don't know. You're super sweaty.” - you chuckled
All he did was roll his eyes, wrapping a muscular arm around my waist and pulling me into him before pressing his lips to mine. The kiss was short, still a little heated, though.
Joe just looked way too hot right now. How was I supposed to not kiss him harder than usual?
When we eventually pulled away, Joe’s eyes were a little wide, and his cheeks were flushed.
“Someone’s worked up.” - Joe chuckled
“Have you seen yourself? I'm gonna be a little worked up when my fiance looks like a walking orgasm.” - you
Joe rolled his eyes a little, trying to cover up that his cheeks were blushing before he leaned in for another kiss. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of the photographers snapping a picture in our direction, so I made sure that my ring was noticeable.
“Very subtle, baby.” - Joe laughed
“We’re not going for subtle. If I could climb to the top of the stadium with a megaphone and yell that we were engaged, I would.” - you
We spent a few more minutes wrapped up in each other before Joe departed to go take a shower. I walked back to my car with an unwipeable smile stuck on my face.
I was sitting in the driver's seat, waiting for Joe to come out since he said we could go get lunch together, when he sent me a text.
It was a few pictures of us that the photographer had taken, my engagement ring sparkling under the Cincinnati sun. The text Joe sent with it made me giggle.
I’d say I did a pretty damn good job picking that ring 🤷🏼‍♂️
You definitely did babe 😙
I mean… do you see that sparkle?!
I think the space station can see the sparkle, Joe. LOL. But hurry up! I'm hungryyy.
Yes, ma'am 🫡
As I waited for Joe, I laid my head back against the headrest, and my mind wandered back to the end of June.
——
Flashback - end of June
Joe was done in France and was on his plane home. I was so excited to see him after being apart from him for a while.
I landed and am at the place 😁
What the fuck does that mean?
Wdym? What place?
The Airbnb that we’re staying at for a few days.
My mouth dropped open at his text, my heart rate picking up at the surprise. Where even was he?
We’re? Where are you??
Yes, we’re. You have a flight here to me tomorrow. I'm in Hydra, Greece, baby. 🤍
What the fuck? Is this a joke? Why are we going to Greece?
It’s almost camp. I felt bad that my first big International trip wasn't with you. So why not extend said trip a little so that I can have memories with the love of my life, too?
You’re unreal. Giving me a day's notice to pack is crazy, though. You’re lucky that I'm so excited for this trip, babyyy.
Then you should get to it, babyyy. Ttyl 😘
I had to grin when he used extra y’s in the word baby like I had. He's so adorable sometimes.
Ttyl Joey!! ILYYY. I'm so excited for the trip. 🤭
Joe hearted the message before he put his phone down to take a nap. On his bedside table was the little black box that had been burning a hole in his pocket for a while. He couldn't help but grin when he grabbed it, pulling it to him before opening it to see the engagement ring that was stored inside.
This was it. He was gonna propose. And he was so glad that it was you.
-
Though packing was a nightmare, I got done eventually and got ready for the night. I don't think I ever slept just tossed and turned out of excitement.
The morning came fairly quickly, and I was practically bubbling when I walked up the steps of the charter plane.
I sent Joe a quick text telling him that I made it onto the plane, ending it with yet another ‘I miss you’.
Scrolling through my camera roll while waiting for a response, I was a little intrigued when the text banner popped up.
Shiesty 💓 - Attachment: 1 Image
I clicked the notification, gasping when I saw the picture, and immediately smashed my phone to my chest to cover my screen.
The image consisted of Joe standing in front of a wall-length mirror, butt naked. The star of the show? One of his huge veiny hands wrapped around his even bigger erect cock.
I miss you too. 💕
I couldn't help but laugh. The insanely revealing and intimate image paired with such a tame and innocent text was baffling. It was so Joe, though.
Joe’s duality never failed to amaze me. On the outside, he was this confident, level-headed star NFL quarterback, and at home with me, he could be multiple different things.
1. An intimate, purely sexy lover who took the reigns in the bedroom.
2. A seriously romantic guy, constantly showering me with love and affection. His more serious side when it came to our relationship.
3. A total softy goofball. Where all he wants is to be cuddled and kissed as he can't help but blush and giggle.
There was never any in-between, and he was always in one of those three modes.
It was a few moments later when I realized I hadn't texted Joe back, so I made sure to quickly do that.
Oh my god, Joe.
Thought I’d send you a little treat after those lingerie pics you sent me last night. 😙
That is def a treat, baby. I wish I was there to have a taste.
You have no idea how horny I am right now. I’m about to bust just from seeing your contact name pop up.
Joe and I went back and forth for a while, just teasing each other before he eventually said that he was in dire need of a cold shower. I had to giggle when Joe sent me a selfie, showing me that his face was completely flushed red.
After my text convo with Joe ended, I decided to take a nap because this was going to be a loooong plane ride.

When I finally landed, it was later in the day in Greece, and there was already a driver for me waiting.
I was antsy the entire way there, just completely excited to see Joe for the first time in a week. When the GPS in the car said arrived, my jaw dropped open at the beautiful house we pulled up to.
Joe was standing on the second-floor balcony, a grin spreading on his lips when he saw me step out of the car.
“Joey!!!” - you squealed
“Hi, baby.” - Joe smiled
Moments later, I helped the driver get my suitcase to the door before I ran into the house. I quickly found the staircase that led upstairs, peeking in every room till I found the master bedroom that Joe was standing in.
When I finally found him, I practically sprinted towards him before throwing myself into his arms.
“There's my gorgeous girl.” - Joe
My legs went around Joe’s waist as his arms went around my waist. Joe held me tightly to him as he slowly swayed from side to side, squeezing me tightly.
“I missed you so much.” - you
“I missed you too, baby. So much.” - Joe
We stayed like that for a while, just wrapped up in each other’s arms before Joe eventually moved around and fell back onto the bed. I fell with him, and I quickly got comfortable in his chest.
“Do you wanna take a quick nap? We have a date later.” - Joe
“A date?” - you grinned
Joe’s heart fluttered when he saw the sparkle in your eyes. He hoped he'd see them again later after what he was going to do at dinner, which would change your lives forever.
-
After our nap, Joe got ready fairly quickly, but it took me a lot longer. I was surprised to see that Joe was somewhat dressed up when he walked into the bathroom.
“You look handsome.” - you grinned
Joe slightly blushed at the comment, walking up behind me and wrapping his arms around my waist. He rested his chin on my shoulder, just watching me do my makeup.
“I love you so much.” - Joe mumbled
“I love you too.” - you grinned
-
Joe and I walked hand in hand to the restaurant just because it was so close. The hostess immediately recognized Joe and walked us to our private eating area outside.
It overlooked the gorgeous water, and the warm fairy lights above us illuminated the darkness.
“Joe, it’s beautiful.” - you
Joe looked over at me, his baby-blue eyes scanning over every feature on my face as I continued to look forward.
“It is, isn't it?” - Joe
He was talking about you.
-
Dinner was delicious, and it was incredibly romantic. The slight breeze made Joe’s curls fly around, and there were quite a few times when I caught myself staring at him. The light from the candle on the table lit up Joe’s eyes and made his tan skin glow in an utterly incandescent way.
Joe’s white button-up shirt was clinging to his chest and arms, making him look even more desirable. He just looked perfect all around.
When we were finished eating and Joe paid, we started walking together, but in the opposite direction of our Airbnb.
“Joe, where are we going?” - you
“You’ll see.” - Joe grinned
After walking for a few minutes, my hand tightly wrapped in Joe’s, we ended up at this private beach access point.
“Uhm, are we allowed to be here?” - you
“Yup. I pulled some strings. You might wanna take your heels off, though.” - Joe
I bent down to start unwrapping the strings of my heels before Joe dropped down on his knees in front of me. Joe gently picked one of my feet up, and I grabbed onto his shoulders as he slid the shoe off, doing the same for the other side.
Joe stood back up, holding my heels with one hand and going back to holding my hand in the other. It was a small gesture, holding my heels for me, but it didn't go unnoticed.
As we started walking together, I saw a wooden rope swing in the distance, roses and candles all scattered around it.
“Joe… this is so sweet.” - you smiled
“Wanna swing?” - Joe grinned
I nodded, and we both quickly jogged over. The swing was sort of high up, so Joe grabbed my hips, easily lifting me and setting me down on the piece of wood.
Then, Joe walked behind me and gently started pushing me. The giggles leaving my lips were calming his nerves because silently, he was freaking out. He was now hyperaware of the ring box in his pocket, and suddenly, that pocket started feeling tighter and tighter.
After a few minutes, Joe walked back in front of me, and I wrapped my arms around his shoulders to pull him closer and kiss him.
“This is the most romantic thing in the world, Joe. Thank you for everything.” - you
I looked up at him, nothing but love in his eyes as he looked down at me like I was the only woman in the world like I was his most valuable possession.
“You mean the world to me, y/n. You’re the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me, and though I wholeheartedly believe that women aren't possessions, you're the most valuable thing I've ever had.” - Joe
“I was just thinking that! I was just thinking that you look at me like I'm your most valuable possession.” - you
The entire time I was talking, Joe was staring into my eyes with that perfect smile on his face. He seemed a little dazed, but I’ll take it as he's a little tired, happy, and buzzed from the wine we drank at the restaurant.
“You always know what I'm thinking, huh?” - Joe
“That seems to be a common theme!” - you giggled
That’s when Joe got an idea.
“Oo. Let’s test your skills. Close your eyes, and I’ll hold several fingers up. You have to guess, and you can open your eyes to see if you're right after.” - Joe
“Okay!!” - you giggled
I closed my eyes, and Joe silently held a couple of fingers up. With my eyes still shut, I guessed.
“Mmm. Three.” - you
Joe quickly switched the number of fingers from one to three, wanting you to think you got it right because that would make what was about to happen even sweeter.
When I opened my eyes, I laughed when I saw that I had guessed right, clapping my hands and doing a little happy dance.
“I got it!” - you
“You know me so well. Okay, one more.” - Joe smiled
As soon as I closed my eyes, Joe quickly dropped down onto one knee. His heart was beating out of his chest, and his hands were shaking when he pulled the box out of his pocket.
“Mm. I think… nine.” - you guess
Joe took a deep breath before I opened my eyes. I immediately gasped when I looked down at Joe, my hands going up to my face as I immediately started crying.
“Y/n. I don't even know where to start.” - Joe
He nervously chuckled, trying to blink back tears as he took a deep breath and just spoke from the heart.
“Y/n, from the moment we collided on that sidewalk, my life changed forever. It was a chance encounter, but it felt like destiny was bringing us together. Who would have thought that a simple accident would lead to the most beautiful journey of my life? We've been inseparable since college, growing up together, learning from each other, and facing every challenge hand in hand. Your love and support have been my anchor, especially through the demanding world of the NFL. You've been there for every game, every victory, every defeat, cheering me on and lifting me. Your belief in me has been my greatest strength. Now, as we stand on the brink of the rest of our lives, I can't help but look back at all the incredible moments we've shared and look forward to the countless memories yet to be made. You are my best friend, my confidant, and the love of my life. I want to spend every day making you as happy as you make me.” - Joe
Joe’s voice was shaky, along with the sobs that left my mouth as tears streamed down my face. When he was finished speaking, he took yet another deep breath and popped open the ring box.
“Will you marry me? Will you be my forever, my always, and my everything for the rest of my life?” - Joe
I nodded my head, slipping off of the swing and getting onto my knees as well. I engulfed Joe in a hug as I cried into his neck.
“Is that a yes?” - Joe
Pulling back, I cupped his cheeks and looked into his gorgeous teary eyes.
“Yes. Yes, Joe, I’ll marry you.” - you
Joe lept forward, wrapping his arms even tighter around my waist as he smashed his lips into mine. When we pulled away, both Joe and I laughed through our tears as he slipped the ring on my finger.
“We’re gonna get married.” - you sniffed
“Yeah… we are.” - Joe sniffed
We kissed for a few minutes after that, just feeling more in love than ever. Joe was so fucking glad he finally did it.
“My fiance.” - Joe mouthed to himself
——
Back to present day
I was pulled out of my thoughts when there was a knock on my passenger-side window. I jumped, looking over to see Joe cupping his hands to try and see through the tinted glass.
Rolling down the window a little, Joe jumped back, and I unlocked the door. Joe opened it and slid into the seat with a smile on his face.
I grinned when I looked over at him, he was still wearing his compression shirt and shorts, even after he had just practiced in it.
“Why’re you still wearing that?” - you
Joe shrugged because he didn't have a real answer. He put it on in hopes that it'd work you up enough to have a quickie in the back of the car, and since you noticed it so quickly, he was hoping that's what was gonna happen.
“You look good. The extra weight you've put on is driving me crazy.” - you
I spoke to him as I punched in the address for the salad place Joe and I were going to. We’d just get it to-go and eat it in the car.
When I started driving, Joe reached over and put his hand on my thigh, not knowing what to do since he wasn't usually in the passenger seat.
Joe just scrolled through his phone until that bored him, and then he initiated a game of I Spy.
-
While we were eating our lunch, I randomly turned sideways in my seat, extending my legs and letting them rest on Joe’s lap. He barely even flinched, settling his salad on my shins as he continued eating.
“Hey, can I post one of those pics? Do you think it would be a good idea to? So that it’s coming from one of us.” - you
Joe shrugged, taking a hefty bite before quickly chewing it up and swallowing. When he was done with his mouthful, Joe put his fork in his bowl and put his empty hand on my thigh.
“You can do whatever you want, baby. You don't need my permission.” - Joe
“I know, but this is a big deal. If you don't want me to post it, that's okay. This is just as much about you as it is about me.” - you
Joe squeezed my thigh, his eyes never leaving my face as he thought of what to say next.
“You can post it. You can even do that collaboration thing where it posts to my account too, if you want.” - Joe
“You want that on your feed? Joe, you've never once posted me.” - you
“Yes, and I realize how fucking stupid that is. You're the woman that I'm spending the rest of my life with, why not post you?” - Joe shrugged
This Joe 2.0 was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. After his wrist injury, Joe had almost turned into a completely different person. But he'd grown for the better.
“You mean that?” - you
“Of course I mean it. I mean all of it.” - Joe
When he said that, Joe reached out and grabbed my left hand, running his pointed finger over my ring, and my heart exploded.
After I gave him a quick kiss, I reached for my phone, saved the photos Joe sent me, put a quick filter on them, and selected them on an IG post.
I pondered the caption before typing what I thought was clever yet funny.
Got my ring. It’s Joe’s turn this season! 🧡
Joe laughed when I showed him, but he thought it was the cutest thing ever. Before posting it, I made sure to turn the comments off before inviting Joe to be a collaborator. I showed him how to accept it on his phone before finally posting it.
“I’m sorry that it took me so long to realize that I should post you. I've kept the greatest thing to ever happen to me in the dark, and it’s gonna break my heart when the inevitable ‘I didn't even know you had a girl’ comments come rolling in. I just want you to know that you mean the world to me. No matter what anyone else says.” - Joe
When I met his soft eyes, my stomach fluttered but my heart broke a little at the apologetic look in his eye.
“Hey, you know that doesn't matter to me. I genuinely don't care what we make public because of how much love we share in private. I know how much I mean to you.” - you
Joe didn't know what to say, so he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to my lips. When we pulled away, Joe dropped his head on my shoulder, feeling a need for closeness.
“I love you.” - Joe mumbled
“I love you too. Always.” - you kiss head
An impulsive thought entered his mind, and his tongue darted out, licking a stripe up my neck before pulling his tongue back into his mouth and giggling.
“Joe!” - you giggled
“Sorryyy.” - Joe drawled it out
-
After we finished lunch, I drove us back to the stadium so Joe could drive his Porsche back home.
Joe gave me a thorough kiss before he opened the door and slid out. He shut his door before running around the front of the car to my window.
When I didn't roll it down immediately, Joe adorably tapped on the glass, smiling when I eventually rolled the window down.
“I hope you know you're wiping that fingerprint off of my window, Mr. Burrow.” - you
Joe pulled his compression shirt away from his stomach, using it to wipe the barely there mark that I was simply just teasing about. My eyes immediately were glued to the patch of his stomach that was bare, practically salivating at the sight of his happy trail and the thought of what it led too.
“There. But I wanted to know if you wanted to head inside the facility with me. I have to grab something from my locker, and I thought you might wanna see the locker room revamp in person.” - Joe
“Am I allowed? What if a guy walks out of the shower room all naked.” - you
“Practice has been over for like two hours. No one’s there.” - Joe
I contemplated his offer before eventually turning my car off, locking it, and grinning when Joe opened my door for me.
We walked hand in hand to the facility, smiling at the receptionist, Laura, who greeted us.
“Congratulations, you two. I saw your post. Nice ring choice, Joe.” - Laura
“I’d say I did pretty good.” - Joe shrugged
Joe and I kept walking after a minute or so, leading me to these big double doors that needed his key card to enter yet again.
My jaw dropped open when Joe opened the door and gestured for me to walk in. The last time I was in the locker room was after the boys won the AFC Championship. This was not the same locker room.
“Woww. This is so cool, Joe.” - you
“Wait. You haven't even seen my locker.” - Joe
Joe grabbed my hand again, his long legs and excited pace making it hard for me to keep up with him as he borderline race-walked to his area.
“Look! It’s clean. All organized. OH, and look at my fridge!” - Joe
It was adorable how excited he was getting to show me everything. His emphasis on the fact that it was clean was because, with the lack of storage in the old lockers, Joe’s would get majorly messy, and Sam would take a picture when Joe wasn't around and send it to me.
There had been a few times when I’d gotten onto Joe to clean it up, so he was proud to show me his somewhat organized locker.
After Joe’s detailed tour of his locker, he plopped down onto the little chair that sat in front of it. He looked up at me like he was expecting a question, but all I did was climb onto his lap.
Joe’s eyes widened, and he wrapped his arms around my waist. I leaned in, kissing up his neck, doing the same to his jaw, and then spreading sloppy kisses all over his smooth cheeks.
“Baby.” - Joe sighed
“You said we’re alone, right?” - you
I slowly started grinding down onto his crotch, while tracing the shell of his ear with my tongue, running it over his jawline, up his chin, and finally pressing a wet and thorough kiss to his lips.
Joe quietly whimpered into the kiss, the movements of my hips getting rougher once I felt something hard below me.
We were kissing like it was our first time tasting each other, pure lust radiating around us as our mouths sloppily moved against each other.
I stopped moving for a moment, moving around till my crotch was right on top of Joe’s hard bulge before I started rocking into him again.
“Fuck. Baby, you're gonna have to stop.” - Joe
“Why, Joey?” - you teased
“I’m gonna fucking cum if you don't stop. Please, stop.” - Joe whimpered
I got off of Joe’s lap a moment, a gush of wetness seeping into my panties as I looked at him in front of me. Joe looked like walking sex.
Fuck, him in that black compression shirt that made his sculpted chest and huge arms bulge out and those shorts that left nothing to the imagination. Joe’s shorts, and the fact that he was sitting, made his huge muscular thighs look fucking perfect. Not to mention the fact that his cock was almost busting out of his shorts. The cut-off football pants already accentuated his crotch, but now that he was hard, every detail of his huge dick was seeable.
Feeling a little bold, I got my phone out of my back pocket as Joe tried to calm himself down.
“Joe. Can I take a picture of you?” - you
“Right now?” - Joe
I nodded, and Joe shrugged, saying ‘I guess’ as I excitedly started directing him.
“Spread your legs more… oh, and put your hands behind your head.” - you
Joe did exactly as I had instructed, purposely flexing both his thighs and his biceps as he smiled for the camera. I bit my lower lip at the image that popped up on my phone. I need him.
“Joe?” - you
“Yeah?” - Joe
I slowly reached for the button of my jean shorts before undoing it, unzipping the fly, and letting them drop to my ankles. Joe’s heart rate picked up as he realized what was gonna happen.
“Are there cameras in here?” - you
“Uhm… I don't think so. Because of the showers.” - Joe
Slowly sliding my panties off, Joe groaned when I walked in between his parted legs and crashed my lips onto his. Joe lifted his hips, yanking his shorts and underwear down before reaching for his shirt.
“You better keep that fucking shirt on.” - you
“Yes, ma’am.” - Joe chuckled
I slid back onto Joe’s lap, hovering over him as I reached down and pumped his cock a few times.
“Baby, please. I need you.” - Joe whimpered
That’s all it took for me to quickly guide his thick tip to my entrance and sink onto him. When he bottomed out, Joe leaned forward and sucked on my neck hard, trying to stifle his moans.
I waited a couple of seconds before slowly starting to rock my hips back and forth. I moaned out from the fullness, Joe’s perfect dick stretching me out.
“Joe, fuck.” - you moaned
Joe reached for my hips, slowly helping me start to pull off and sink back down. His eyes were glued to the way my heat swallowed his thick cock, and it was driving him fucking crazy.
Soon, sounds of skin hitting skin started to fill the locker room as I set a hungry pace, riding Joe into oblivion as he struggled to stay quiet.
“Fuck, baby. You're such a- shit. That's it. That's my good girl.” - Joe whimpered
Joe was going crazy. The love of his life was fucking the hell out of him in the locker room of the NFL team he played for. He couldn't believe this was real life.
I pulled Joe’s head out of my neck and pushed him to where his back was flat against the chair. He looked a little confused, but I couldn't help but borderline drool over his perfect body.
“Put your hands behind your head.” - you
Joe’s eyes go wide before he does as asked, putting his hands behind his head in a way that makes his biceps bulge. He looks like a fucking greek god.
The sight of his thick and veiny arms made my core clench down on Joe’s cock. In response, Joe sucked both of his lips into his mouth, trying his hardest to stay quiet as his face scrunched up.
“Y/n, baby…” - Joe panted
Joe stayed in that position for a while before his arms started to get tired. He dropped his arms and leaned forward yet again. Joe nestled his mouth under one of my ears before he stopped holding back his sounds of pleasure, knowing how much I loved it when he was loud.
“Fuck- mmm, baby.” - Joe whimpered
“Holy shit, Joe.” - you moaned
A few minutes later, I noticed how Joe was starting to get louder. His chest was heaving, and sweat was dripping down his face.
“I’m close. Please… please.” - Joe
I moved faster on him, wanting him to cum for me. How could I not with how perfect he looked?
When Joe’s whimpers got louder, I moved my hands to his lower stomach, moving them under his shirt and running my nails on his lower stomach.
“Oh my god- I’m so fucking close.” - Joe whimpered
A minute later, Joe came, his body shaking as he emptied himself inside of me. Joe was moaning loudly through his whole climax, completely forgetting that we were in a public place.
It took him a couple of moments to collect himself, gaining his breath back, and once his head cleared up, he realized I hadn't finished yet.
Joe abruptly stood up and pulled out, man-handling me to be bent over with my forearms on the chair that he was just sitting on.
Out of nowhere, Joe thrust his entire length into me with no warning. I didn't even get time to adjust before he started moving, and he set a rough pace.
“Oh my god! Joey fuck.” - you whimpered
Joe only sped up, fucking me harder with the need to make me climax in the back of his mind.
“Come on, baby. Are you almost there?” - Joe
“Mm. Yes! Joey, please.” - you moaned
Upon hearing that, Joe started thrusting harder, which I didn't think was possible. Every thrust was hard, hitting that spot inside me each time with his tip.
It wasn't long til I was climaxing. Joe had pinched my clit and gave me a specifically hard thrust that sent me right over the edge.
I moaned his name through my climax, my core clamping down on him so hard that it sent Joe over the edge for a second time. Joe was a mess, whimpering loudly as he shot his second load.
What happened next was something I wasn't expecting at all. As Joe was coming down from his high, he laid a harsh slap on my ass.
Joe left his hand there, bringing his other one over to my other ass cheek as he grabbed two handfuls. That’s how he stayed for a while, letting his cock slowly soften before he eventually pulled out.
When he did, Joe walked over to his mini-fridge & microwave cubby, grabbing some paper towels to clean me up. When he was done with me, handing me back all of my clothes and helping me stand with shaky legs, he cleaned himself off.
Now that we were both fully dressed, Joe cleaned off the chair, doing an all-around assessment of the area to make sure everything was clean.
“I can't believe we just did that.” - you chuckled
“Me neither. That was intense.” - Joe
“Intense and so fucking good.” - you
Joe chuckled, holding me into him tightly as he rubbed his big hands over my back.
“What’re you gonna do with that pic you took of me?” - Joe smirked
In all honesty, Joe felt smug as fuck that I wanted that picture of him. All he could think about was the fact that I thought he looked so good that I needed a picture of it, and it was hard for him to pretend like it didn't give him a huge ego boost.
“Mm. I don't know. Maybe make it my home screen.” - you
“I don't know about that… maybe keep that pic in the hidden album.” - Joe chuckled
We continued talking for a few minutes before it eventually went silent. I was in a daze, staring at Joe and admiring his perfect face before a thought popped into my head.
“What’d you need to grab from in here?” - you
“Nothing. I brought you in here for a tour with hopefulness for a happy ending.” - Joe
“Joseph Lee!” - you giggled
Joe just laughed with me, wrapping his arms around my waist and rocking back and forth between his feet. His head was on my shoulder, his adorable laugh going right into my ear.
“I love you.” - you grinned
“I love you too. More than you can fathom.” - Joe

Sick Day|| Joe Burrow x reader
Tumblr media
•pairing: Joe Burrow x reader
•summary: You take care of a sick Joe<3
•warnings: sick Joe, the flu, vomiting, lots of fluff
•word count: 1.8k
•A/N: I thought I’d post this for all of you that are waiting for a Welcome to the Jungle update (which is coming this weekend!) This is from my NFL imagines book on wattpad! :)
You were sitting on your couch, getting ready to watch (your favorite tv show) when your phone rang. You picked up your phone, smiling when you saw your boyfriends contact name, shiesty❤️‍🔥, on the top of the screen.
"Hey Joey!" you greeted cheerfully.
You heard a sniffle on the other side. Was he crying?
"Joe?" you questioned, "What's going on? Are you okay?"
"I think," he cleared his throat, "I think I'm sick, take care of me?"
His voice was raspy and he sounded congested. There was no thinking he was sick, he was definitely sick.
You frowned, "I'm sorry baby. Do you want me to bring anything?"
"Just you. Please." He finished his sentence with a cough.
"Of course, I'll be right over."
Joe nodded on the other line, but you couldn't see, so you were met with complete silence.
"Joe?"
He sniffled, "Oh, sorry. Okay, I'll see you soon."
"See you in a bit, I love you."
"I love you more."
You hung up the phone with a sigh. Usually when you get a phone call from Joe, he's more upbeat and cracking jokes every other line. You figured he must feel pretty bad then since he’s doing neither of those things.
You stood from the couch, going to your bathroom to freshen up before heading over to your boyfriends house. You live about ten minutes away from Joe's house, which speaking of his house, you currently are in the process of moving out of your apartment and into his house. It's taking a little while for you to get all of your things over to his place, but once the off-season is here, you'll be moved in with Joe.
You brushed your hair and changed your outfit, putting on a pair of black leggings and one of Joe's old LSU sweatshirts. Once you were ready, you left your apartment and headed for Joe's house. You texted him to let him know you were on your way and that you'd stop at the store if he wanted anything. He just replied with a simple "No thanks", so you drove straight to his house.
Once you arrived at his house, you unlocked his front door with a house key he gave you. You didn't want him to get up and open the door, especially if he wasn't feeling the greatest. You took your shoes off and placed them on the shoe rack, next to Joe's Nikes. You walked down the entry way and into the living room, frowning at the sight in front of you. Joe was laying on the couch with a blanket wrapped around his body. One hand was laying over his forehead while the other was placed on his stomach.
"Hey baby," you said, walking over to him.
Joe smiled softly at you, "Hey sweets."
You leaned down next to him, placing your hand on his cheek. He brought down the hand he had placed on his forehead, placing it on your forearm.
"How are you feeling?"
Joe sniffled, "Pretty shitty." he smirked, "but at least now I have a sexy little nurse to take care of me."
You shook your head, laughing at what Joe had just said. Even in his current state, he still had a comment to make. It made you smile, happy to hear your boyfriend was somewhat still his usual self.
However, your smile soon turned into a frown as you took in his appearance. He was paler than usual, with dark purple under eyes and a pink nose. You felt both of his cheeks and his forehead, checking him for a fever.
"You definitely have a fever."
He nodded, "Yeah, I took my temp about an hour ago. It was one hundred one point two."
You frowned, asking "Does anything hurt?"
Joe closed his eyes, "My head. My stomach hurts a little bit too, and my throat. I cant stop sneezing either."
"You poor thing, I'm sorry." You said, voice laced with sorrow as you gently stroked his cheek. Joe leaned into your touch.
"Can I get you anything?" You asked.
Joe started to sit up. You stood from your leaning position, helping him sit up. He smiled softly at you, muttering a "thank you".
"Just," he took a deep breath, trying to hold back a sneeze. It failed and he sneezed anyways. Joe groaned, "Oh god, I'm sorry."
You chuckled, "Don't apologize, Joey. It's okay."
"As I was saying, just holding me would be great." he said, bashfully. Joe wasn't one to initiate the cuddling, you always were. You smiled at him, sitting down on the couch next to him. Joe carefully laid back down, resting his head on your chest. He hummed as he snuggled himself into your breasts.
"Are you comfy?" you asked with a laugh.
"Very." He nodded, pulling the blanket over his shoulders.
"Good." you said softly. You brought your left hand down to his blonde hair, running your fingers through it gently and scratching his head every so often. You hoped it would lull him to sleep (which he desperately needed). As you ran your fingers through Joes soft strands of blonde hair, you noticed he started to stir a bit.
You placed a hand on his shoulder, "You okay?"
He nodded. You put your hand back in his hair, running your fingers through it, but stopping when you heard Joe groan softly. You didn't have time to react when Joe threw the blanket off of him and sat up, abruptly.
Uh oh. You thought.
"Joe-."
He cut you off, "I think I'm gonna be sick." He got up from the couch and sprinted off towards the bathroom.
"Shit." you cursed to yourself, jumping up from the couch and running into the bathroom. You frowned as you saw Joe hunched over the toilet. You sat down on the edge of the bathtub, rubbing his back up and down, trying your best to soothe him.
"It's okay, babe. You're okay. Just let it out".
He sniffled as he pulled his head out of the toilet bowl. He wiped his mouth before looking up at you. The look on his face made your heart break. He looked absolutely miserable.
"Oh, Joey."
You stood from where you sat, opting to sit down against the wall behind him instead. As soon as you leaned against the wall, Joe was instantly in your arms. The back of his head was laying on your chest while you wrapped your arms around him. He placed a hand on his stomach.
"Baby, I think I'm dying." He croaked dramatically. You couldn't help but laugh.
"You're not dying you big baby. I think you just have a bad case of the flu."
He groaned, snuggling himself further into your body. You put your hands in his hair, gently massaging his scalp.
"Sitting on the floor of your bathroom can't be comfortable." You murmured gently.
"No, but you are."
You smiled, "I'll cuddle you on the couch, okay?"
You felt Joe nod in response, so you carefully stood up from the ground, careful not to jerk his body too much. You helped him off the ground, tightly holding his hand.
"Do you feel like you're going to be sick again?"
He shook his head, "No. Not right now at least."
"I'll bring the trash can just in case. Now, you go get comfy on the couch, okay my love?"
He nodded, slowly walking out of the bathroom. You frowned as you watched him. You hated seeing him sick. Joe didn't get sick often, but when he did, it was just like this. You grabbed the trash can from the bathroom and went into the kitchen to grab a grocery bag to line it, just in case he did get sick again. You grabbed a bottle of blue gatorade from Joe's fridge, along with a bottle of sprite. You made sure to grab two straws too, one for each drink. You walked into the living room, setting down the trash can next to Joe. He smiled up at you.
"I brought you some sprite to settle your tummy. And a gatorade in case you get tired of sprite, plus the electrolytes are good for you."
He chuckled, "Thank you, sweets. Although it makes me sound like a child when you say that."
You giggled, placing the drinks on the coffee table.
"Can I get you anything else?" You asked, reaching out to caress Joes cheek. He brought his hand up to yours, holding it against his flushed skin.
"Cuddle me?"
You smiled, "How could I say no?”
Joe smiled softly as he slowly sat up to make room for you on the couch. Once you sat down and were comfortable, You put your arm up on the couch. Joe tucked himself under your arm pit, laying the side of his face on your right breast. Once he was comfortable, you grabbed the blanket and placed it over his body. You put your arm down, your hand laying on his blanketed bicep.
"Thank you for being my sexy nurse today, Y/n."
You laughed, rubbing his arm. "Oh Joey, Even when you're sick you can still crack jokes."
He hummed in amusement, "But seriously, thank you for taking care of me."
You leaned down and pressed a gentle, loving kiss to the crown of his head, "There's no need to thank me. I hate seeing you sick, I'd do anything to make you feel better."
"Oooh, anything you say?"
You shook your head, "Not that. Gotta get you feeling better first, Mr. Burrow.”
He chuckled, "Hopefully I'll be better tomorrow."
You hummed, rubbing his bicep, "I hope so too. Now," you brought your hand up to his hair, slowly running your fingers through it, "get some rest, okay?"
"Okay." He said quietly as he sniffled.
"I love you Joe."
"I love you more, sweetheart."
You spent the rest of the afternoon and evening on the couch watching SpongeBob and cuddling with Joe. Thankfully, he felt much better the next day and he got his wish for you to do anything to make him feel better ;)

If you’re still taking prompts - our assertive heroine rescuing reserved boy Joe Burrow from an awkward/socially scary situation. I’d love if they were strangers/a meet-cute kind of thing!
Joe Burrow - Damsel in Distress
Joe was nursing a bottle of water, tugging uncomfortably at the collar of his sweatshirt. He was at a house party Sam was hosting and he was doing his best to blend in to the background of the party, but he should have realized it wouldn't happen so easily.
In fact, at this very moment he was being harassed by a woman who couldn't seem to take 'no' for an answer. Albeit, Joe didn't outright tell her to go away, but he was hoping she'd catch the hint at some point. He normally didn't mind these things his teammates and friends threw, but tonight he was especially anxious as he knew there would be more than the usual here, meaning more people he didn't know and didn't want to get to know, and a lot more people who wanted to get to know him.
"So, I was thinking maybe we could get out of here?" The woman in front of him leaned against his shoulder, her hands rubbing up his forearm as Joe looked around desperately for Sam or one of his other teammates to intervene. Yet, in the faces of many, he couldn't find one that was familiar.
He needed a miracle.
"Hey, there you are!" Suddenly a hand wrapped itself around his other arm and Joe turned suddenly to see another woman smiling, her expression one of kindness and he could see in her eyes that she was imploring him to do something. "I'm so sorry it took me so long. I found Sam by the way. Want to head over to talk to him?"
"Sure." Joe agreed readily with the stranger. Anything to get out of this current situation.
"We were in the middle of something!" The harpy next to him harped at his heroine.
"Oh, I'm sorry to interrupt." She shot her a fake smile. "But I think you might want to find a guy who isn't already seeing someone. Now, if you'd excuse me, my boyfriend and I are heading to see my cousin. Y'know? The owner of this house that you likely gatecrashed?"
This caused the harpy to let go of his arm, shoot the other woman a dirty look, and storm off into the crowd. "Well, fuck. Thanks for helping me out there." Joe chuckled and shyly smiled at the woman in front of him.
"I couldn't leave a damsel in distress like that to suffer. Sam would never forgive me if his quarterback ended up on an episode of Dateline." She teased.
"Joe Burrow." Joe stuck his hand out confidently.
"Cici Hubbard. Nice to meet you, Joe." She shook it back and they started walking towards the direction she gestured at earlier.
"Damsel in distress, huh?" Joe questioned.
"I call them as I see them." She nonchalantly said back.
"How can I thank you for helping me out back there?" Joe asked hopefully.
Cici thought for a minute before answering. "Sam has my number. Give me a call later, princess, and we'll figure it out." She winked at him and turned to walk off as they were approaching Sam.
"Hey dude! Where were you?" Sam asked.
"I was dealing with some pushy fans and your cousin Cici showed up to help me out." Joe explained.
"Ah. You met Cici? What do you think of her? She sure is something." Sam chuckled.
Joe looked off into the direction of where she walked off to. "Yeah, she sure is.."

Joey B Blurbs: Boyfriend
Tumblr media
————————————————————————-
Summary: You prank Joe by calling him your boyfriend instead of your husband.
Warnings: Unserious/funny, pranks!
Pairing: Joe Burrow x Reader
Imagine Universe: Into the Mystic
A/N: Part 2 of blurb night!
————————————————————————-
April 4, 2024
I was cuddled up on the couch, relaxed by the rain hitting the roof, and the twins played in their playroom while I watched TV.
Joe had left early this morning to go workout, and his mood seemed positive since he was able to start throwing again recently. His happy demeanor was infectious because I couldn't be more prouder of him than I was now. He rehabbed like a man on a mission, and he was now seeing benefits from it.
I was still lying in bed when he gave me a quick peck before leaving. Joe then said bye to my bump, and he was off to the gym.
Since then, I have gotten the boys ready for the day, fixed breakfast, did some quick cleaning around the house, made some lunch, and talked to Robin over the phone about Joe’s injury status.
I caught a whiff of Joe’s scent off of the sweatshirt of his that I had on.
A pang of sadness crept up in my mind when I realized just how much I hated being away from Joe.
I always hated being away from Joe for extended periods, but pregnancy hadn't made that any better.
Before I get could too lost in my thoughts, my phone started vibrating on the coffee table.
My heart warmed when I picked up the phone and saw it was Joe calling.
“Hey, babe.” - you
“Hey, Mama. I'm almost home.” - Joe
“Okay… good.” - you
“Good? Everything okay?” - Joe
“Yeah, I just miss you a lot.” - you
“I only went to go work out, baby.” - Joe laughed
“I know, but I don't like being away from you. Neither does your daughter.” - you
Joe felt his heart flutter at that, his daughter. He was so ready to be a girl dad.
“I’ll cuddle with you both when I get home.” - Joe
“Sounds perfect. I'll see you soon, Daddy.” - you
There’s a few seconds of silence until Joe clears his throat and speaks up. I hadn't ever called Joe that, but I still didn't mean it sexually.
“What did you call me?” - Joe
“Daddy, you know, because we were talking about the baby and you're her daddy.” - you
Joe cleared his throat yet again, and when he began talking, I didn't miss how his voice had dropped an octave.
“Oh. I thought you meant it in another way. You've just never called me that unless you were referring to me for the twins.” - Joe
“You liked it, didn't you?” - you
The grin in my voice was evident, and Joe’s dirty chuckle sent a sizzle of heat down my spine.
“Yeah. I’ll admit that I did. Damn, your hormones have been raging lately.” - Joe
“You don't help, Mr. Sexy.” - you
“And you are testing my control, Mrs. Sexy.” - Joe
We continued going back and forth till Joe announced that he was turning onto our road. After quick I love you’s we hung up.
——
A minute later, Joe walked into the house with a big grin on his face.
“There’s my girl.” - Joe
“Hey, Joey.” - you
Joe went to climb onto the couch next to me, but I quickly stopped him.
“What?” - Joe
“Did you shower at the gym?” - you
“Yes, ma’am.” - Joe
“Okay, continue.” - you
He laughed before plopping down next to me and propping his feet up on the ottoman. I cuddled into Joe’s chest, and he snaked one of his hands under his my sweatshirt to put a big hand on my bump.
“Where are the boys?” - Joe
“They’ve been playing in the playroom. I just checked on them, and they were playing with their Hot Wheels.” - you
“Imma be right back.” - Joe
Joe pressed a kiss to my temple before getting up and heading to the boys' playroom.
A smile found its way onto my face when I heard Tyson and Miles cheering for their dad’s arrival home.
Joe would be gone for a few more minutes, and during that period, I realized Joe was due for another prank…
——
It was later that evening. Miles and Tyson were asleep, and I was in the kitchen, cleaning the rest of the kitchen up from dinner.
Joe was laying on the couch, waiting for me to come cuddle with him when I was done. Let the prank begin.
“Baby, come here.” - you
I heard the floorboards creak and soon, Joe’s tall frame was making an appearance beside me.
“What’s up?” - Joe
Setting my phone up on the counter, Joe side-eyed me when he saw that TikTok was pulled up.
“Why are you videoing?” - Joe
“It’s just an easy TikTok trend.” - you
“K.” - Joe mumbled
I clicked play on the video and Joe instinctively moved closer to me to where his body was pressed against mine.
“Hey, loves! There's a trend going around where you ask your boyfriend to touch his favorite parts of you, so I'm gonna do it with mine.” - you smiled
When I stepped to face Joe, he had a playful smile on his face and an eyebrow raised.
“What?” - you laughed
“I’m not your boyfriend.” - Joe
“Huh?” - you
“You called me your boyfriend. I'm not your boyfriend.” - Joe
I stared at him, trying to act dumbfounded, so Joe forged ahead.
“If I remember correctly, I put a pretty hefty ring on your finger and said vows to you in front of a hundred people. I haven't been just your boyfriend since January 30th, 2021. So… if you have a boyfriend, it isn't me, gotta be another man.” - Joe
“Joe…” - you laughed
“So who's your boyfriend?” - Joe
“I don't have one, it was a prank.” - you
“Yeah, that's what I thought, wifey.” - Joe grinned
“Calm down, hubby.” - you

September 29, 2022
Macee-Hey girl! I'll pick you up in about an fifteen. Sound good?
You-Yes! I'll see you in a bit :)
Macee liked a message.
You put your phone down on your dresser, rummaging through the bottom drawer where you kept all of your pants. You were looking for your favorite pair of mom jeans that you wear almost every time you go out.
Today, well, tonight, you are going to your first ever Cincinnati Bengals game.
Macee invited you to go to the game with her. You started working at Cincy Styles two days ago. You and Macee have become quite good friends already. It's good to have someone like her around. You went out to lunch with Macee during your lunch break on your first day and that's when she let you know she's engaged to Logan Wilson, linebacker for the Bengals and one of Joe's teammates that you’ve already met. Well, met briefly. You didn't get to have a full conversation with him. You have a feeling that you will someday though since you are friends with Macee and living in the same apartment as one of his best friends.
So since the Bengals have a home game tonight, Macee thought it would be a fun night for the both of you if you attended—especially since you have never been to a game before.
You found the pants you were searching for, pulling them out and placing them on the ground while you got the rest of your outfit ready. Aiming for something cute and comfortable, you decided you were going to wear the vintage Bengals sweatshirt that Macee gave you, along with your light wash mom jeans and white Nike AirMax's.
Once you had your outfit picked out, you headed to the bathroom to go ready.
After getting dressed and freshened up, you were straightening your hair when Joe walked past the bathroom, stopping in his tracks when he saw your outfit. He stepped into the bathroom, curiously eyeing you through the mirror. You took the styling tool away from your hair and looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
"Hi?"
He pointed at you, “You're wearing a Bengals sweatshirt."
You hummed, pulling more pieces of hair out to straighten, “Oh really? I didn't notice."
Joe rolled his eyes, adjusting the sleeves to his floral suit. You couldn't help but examine his outfit choice for tonight's game against the Miami Dolphins. He wore a black suit that had large white roses all over.
Now, you hate to admit it, but...
Joe looks hot as hell in that suit.
You have to admit, you and Joe may not be too fond of each other, but you’d be lying if you said he wasn't fine as hell.
"You didn't tell me you're going to the game tonight?"
You shrugged, "Didn't think you'd care."
"I'm not that much of a dick, Y/n.”
You unplugged the flat iron and looked at Joe through the mirror. His baby blue eyes shining as he looked back at you. You could feel the slightest hint of a blush rise to your cheeks as he looked at you.
"Well," you said, "I didn't want to boost that ego of yours. Make you think I'm going only to watch you play."
He let out a short laugh, "You really think I'd think you're only going to watch me?"
"Maybe," you shrugged.
"Whatever. Well I gotta go, have fun watching me from the stands tonight. I know those pretty Y/e/c eyes are only going to stay on me, sweets." He teased with a smirk.
You looked up at him with an unamused look, which made him chuckle.
"Good luck." you said, giving him a small smile.
"Thanks. Have fun."
You smiled, "I will."
He walked out of the bathroom, heading over to the door and sliding his shoes on. You heard the jingle of his keys, signaling he was getting ready to leave. You heard the door open, but never close.
"Hey Y/n!" Joe called.
"Yeah?!" you shouted back.
"Every time I throw a touchdown tonight. don't forget to chant Who Dey with the crowd. I have a feeling you'll be doing it a lot."
You didn't even have to see his face, you could hear the cockiness in his tone.
"Oh don't worry, I won't forget!" you remarked.
He was about to leave when you called out to him.
"Oh and Joe," you stepped out of the bathroom and out into the living room so he could see the teasing smirk on my face, "make sure to tell Ja'Marr I'm in the stands."
He rolled his eyes.
"Thanks." you grinned cheekily, walking back into the bathroom to finish getting ready.
About 45 minutes later, Macee pulled up to the complex and texted you to let you know she was outside. You told her to wait outside for you since you still haven't told her that you live with Joe. You know you have to tell her at some point, you’re just not sure when, exactly.
"Hey Y/n.” Macee smiled as you sat down on the passenger seat.
"Hey girl," you grinned as you buckled your seatbelt, "how are you?"
"Great! I'm super excited for this game."
You nodded, "Me too. I've never been to an NFL game before."
She pulled out of the complex and started the drive to Paycor Stadium, which was about a 25 minute drive from yours and Joes apartment. With game day traffic though, it would probably be much longer.
"They're so much fun, especially if you have good seats! Which," she took a hand off the wheel and rummaged through her purse. She pulled out two tickets, "I got for us, well, Logan got for us.”
You took the tickets from her hand, examining them. Your seats were two rows up behind the Bengals sideline. The two of you would have a great view of the game and the players.
"This is awesome," you smiled, putting the tickets back in her purse, "thank you for inviting me."
"Of course, I wouldn't want you to miss out on this. We're going to have a blast."
You nodded in agreement. Even though you’ve never been to a game, you know it's going to be such a fun experience. You couldn't wait to get to the stadium and get this night started.
~time skip brought to you by joe burrow being literally the HOTTEST man to walk this earth~
You and Macee got to your seats, sitting next to two other girls. The brunette was wearing a Burrow jersey and the red head was wearing a sweatshirt that read "I ❤️ Joe Burrow". You couldn't help the small smile that appeared on your face as you heard the girls gush about how excited they were to see Joe in person.
You were about to say something to Macee when the bright stadium dimmed and an orange hue took over, making the full crowd in the stadium look orange. The Bengals cheerleaders made a tunnel by the tunnel the players would run out of, signaling that the player and team introductions would be starting. The orange lights started to switch between orange, black, and white. The Jumbotron started to play the pre-game hype video they play at every home game. The crowd started to cheer as the Bengals players began to line up at the tunnel, getting ready to run onto the field.
"Bengals fans, please welcome head coach Zac Taylor and the Cincinnati Bengals!"
The crowd went wild as the coaches and players ran out of the tunnel and onto the field. Orange fireworks were set off on each end zone, adding to the intensity of the atmosphere. You and Macee cheered right along with the crowd.
You were already loving this and the game hadn't even started yet!
The cheers died down a bit and the announcers voice boomed through Paycor.
"Here are our defensive starters!"
"Oh here we go," Macee said as she gently grabbed onto your bicep.
"At linebacker, from Wyoming, number 55, Logan Wilson!"
The crowd went crazy, cheering and yelling for Logan. Macee was ecstatic when her fiancés name was called.
"YEAH!!!" she hollered, "LOGAN!!!"
"Wooooo!!" you cheered, throwing your hands up in the air. Macee turned to you, smiling widely.
"Isn't this awesome?" she asked.
You nodded, "The atmosphere of this stadium is amazing."
The rest of the defensive starters were introduced, the fans screaming and cheering as each players name was called. The offense had already been on the field, being the group that ran out with Zac Taylor and the other coaches. After all the players names were announced, more fireworks went off on each end zone and the crowd roared with excitement.
Once all the pre-game stuff was over, the game had finally started.
The Bengals were playing the Miami Dolphins, who were currently sitting undefeated at 3-0. It should be a good game.
Miami's offense took the field first, meaning the Bengals offense was on the sideline. You examined the sideline, trying to see if you could find any familiar names or faces.
"There he is!" The brunette next to you squealed, pointing at a player.
The red head practically moaned, "Oh my fuck. He's so much hotter in person."
You looked at who the brunette was pointing at, immediately seeing Joe, who was holding the collar of his white jersey as he laughed with Ja'marr and Tee.
The girl with red hair turned to you, “Isn't he so much hotter in person?"
You looked away from Joe, seeing the girls looking at you expectantly.
"Uh," you hesitated, unsure of what to say, "sure?"
"I'm taking that as a yes." the brunette giggled as she took a swig of her beer.
You turned your attention back to the game. The Dolphins had drove down the field far enough to make a field goal. After the field goal was made, the Bengals offense took the field in their all white uniforms.
"I didn't know they had all white uniforms?"
Macee nodded as she looked at Logan, who was sitting directly in front of us on the bench.
"They've always had the white uniforms, but they're trying out the white helmets for the first time."
"It looks really cool."
Macee nodded, "It does. The guys were really excited to wear these."
You looked out onto the field just in time to see Joe throw a pass to Ja'marr, who was wide open. He ran about ten yards, bringing them to the Dolphins 30 yard line. Joe snapped the ball, dropping back to throw a short pass to Tee Higgins for a gain of four. It was now second down, the Bengals opting to run the ball this time. They were successful, getting the first down and more, as Joe Mixon was just short of the end zone. The clock started and Joe snapped the ball, handing it off to Joe Mixon, who ran it in for a touchdown.
The crowd went wild as the Bengals scored. It soon broke out into the chant Joe was telling you about. It was the first time you had ever heard it, so you didn't join in.
"Who dey, who dey, who dey think gonna beat dem Bengals?"
"Nobody!"
Macee yelled the words, cheering afterwards.
"Did you know it?" She asked after finishing the chant.
You shook your head, "No, that's the first time I've ever heard it," you said, letting out a laugh.
Macee smiled, "Well that's okay, you can join in on the next touchdown."
You nodded, "Definitely."
You knew by the end of this game that you would be a pro at the crowd chant.
The first quarter came to an end fairly quickly. Not much happened in the beginning of the second quarter. Both teams had quickly went three and out with their first possessions of the quarter. However the game picked up in the second half of the quarter. The Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered a scary concussion with about seven minutes left of the quarter. He was carted off the field and out of the game.
Prayers for Tua.
After Tua was carted off, the Dolphins scored another field goal, making the score 6-7. The Bengals started their drive pretty slow, but with nearly three minutes left Joe threw a 59 yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins.
"You're joining in on this one Y/n.” Macee said as the two of you watched Evan McPherson kick the extra point. As soon as the kick was good, the crowd started chanting.
You and Macee looked at eachother, wide grins on your faces as you chanted: “Who Dey" along with the rest of the crowd.
You wooed loudly as the offense ran back to the sidelines. As the offense came back and the defense got ready to go out on the field, Logan stood from the bench and grabbed his helmet. He turned around and looked into the stands, quickly finding Macee. He waved at her, which she waved back and blew him a kiss. He smiled widely at her before putting his helmet on and going onto the field. You couldn't help but smile at the two.
They're such a sweet couple.
Macee watched Logan jog onto the field, then she turned to you.
"I could use a drink and a pretzel. What about you?"
You hadn't eaten anything since lunch today, plus a hard seltzer sounds really good.
You chuckled, "Sounds good to me."
She nodded, "Awesome, let's go get one before the lines get too crazy at halftime."
Macee led the way out of the stands and into the area with concessions and bathrooms. You guys found a spot that was selling soft pretzels, hot dogs, and an assortment of alcoholic beverages. Thankfully, the lines weren't too long, but if you had to miss halftime it would be just fine. You got in line behind two guys, one was wearing a Sam Hubbard jersey and the other wearing a Ja'marr Chase jersey. It was nice to see the fans wearing jerseys of different players and not just Joe. Some teams, the fans only wear one players jersey to games. *Cough* Tampa Bay *cough*
You don't need to elaborate, everyone already knows exactly what player you’re referring to.
As you waited in line, a short, brunette woman approached the two of you with a wide smile.
"Hey Macee!"
Macee turned around, smiling as she saw the woman.
"Hey Em!"
The two hugged. Macee pulled away and gushed as she looked at the woman, who you found out is named Em.
"Oh my gosh, you're glowing. Look at your cute bump!"
Em turned to the side, flattening her jersey and holding her belly. She smiled widely, "I know. Baby girl Hubbard is really making an appearance."
Macee smiled, "Yes she is."
Em's smile turned to a look of confusion, "I didn't see you up in the suite?
Macee nodded, "I'm down in the stands today. Logan got tickets for us."
"Us?"
Macee smiled, "Emma, this is Y/n.” she gestured to you, “Y/n just moved to Cincinnati a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd bring her to a game with me."
You smiled, holding out my right hand for Emma to shake, "Hi, I'm Y/n.”
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Emma, Sam Hubbards wife."
Joe is very good friends with Sam, so you’re sure you’ll be seeing the two of them at the apartment someday.
The line started to move, the three of you moving up. Emma spoke up, "You guys are more than welcome to come up to the suite with the other wives and I.”
Macee smiled, "It's okay, I'm enjoying the view from the stands. It's nice to be with the fans, too. Thank you though."
You nodded, "Yeah, thank you very much."
Emma smiled, "Of course. Maybe the next game I'll see you two up there. I know a few guys on the team that could use a girlfriend." She said, winking at you.
"Wouldn't she be so cute with Joe?"
You felt your heart drop at the mention of Joes name.
Emma nodded, "Joe or Evan."
Macee gasped, "Oh, Evan is so sweet. He'd love Y/n.”
"Isn't he? I think they'd look good together."
You smiled, "These guys sound great, but I don't think I'm ready to date anyone yet. I'm still trying to get settled in."
Emma nodded, "Totally understand. When you're ready though, I'd love to introduce you to some of the guys."
"I've actually already met a few." you said with a laugh, but your smile soon fell as you realized what you just said.
Macee furrowed her brows, "When?"
Y/n, you're such a fucking idiot! You mentally cursed yourself.
"Um," You stuttered, trying to think of a lie. You didn't want to tell Macee and Emma about living with Joe yet. You planned on telling Macee somewhere more private, and a Bengals game was not the place to drop a piece of information like that.
"I didn't necessarily meet them," you continued, "but I saw Ja'marr and Tee in downtown Cincinnati, a uh, a few nights ago."
Macee nodded, "Yeah, the guys like to hangout there.  Especially at that brewery on the corner."
"Oooh," Emma mused, "I love that place. Maybe we could do a girls night there sometime? I'd love to get to know you more Y/n, you seem really sweet."
You smiled, "I'd love that. And thank you, you do too."
Emma smiled and put her hands on her bump, "Well ladies, I'd love to chat some more, but little miss wants a pretzel and some salsa."
You and Macee both grimace. You love soft pretzels and salsa, but definitely not together.
Emma laughed at your facial expressions.
"I know, it sounds awful. My pregnancy cravings have been crazy these last few weeks."
"Yeah," you laughed, "I can tell. But whatever makes the baby happy, right?"
She smiled, "Exactly. It was great meeting you Claire, and Macee it's always great to see you."
Macee smiled and gave her a hug goodbye. Emma turned to you and gave you a hug.
"It was nice meeting you Emma. Also, congratulations on the baby."
"Thank you," she smiled, "see you girls later!"
You waved and said goodbye as Emma met up with some other women, who you assumed were wives of other Bengals players.
"She seems sweet." you said, pulling out your claw clip from your purse and putting it into your hair.
Macee nodded, "She is. She's a little quiet sometimes, definitely the opposite of us."
You laughed at her statement. It's true, you and Macee are not the most quiet group of people, but you wouldn't have it any other way. You’ve always been an outgoing and bubbly type of person.
Macee continued, "but she's really sweet."
The concession line moved fairly quickly. You and Macee got your pretzels and drinks and headed back to the stands to catch the second half of the game.
The third quarter was pretty uneventful. Nothing happened until about two minutes left of the quarter when the Dolphins kicker, made a 20 yard field goal. Miami was now up 15-14. You watched as the offense ran onto the field.
Macee glanced at the score board, "Hopefully they score."
"I'm sure they will."
She chuckled, "I think they will, but not before they give us all a heart attack. I call them the cardiac cats for a reason."
The cardiac cats was a perfect nickname for that team.
The offense moved down the field with ease at the start of the fourth quarter. However, they came up short on third down, so Evan McPherson kicked the 19 yard field goal to put some more points on the board. The offense ran back to the sidelines. As the Dolphins began their drive, you surveyed the Bengals sideline. Joe was walking down the sideline, holding the collar of his jersey and looking up into the crowd. The girls next to you started freaking out.
"Oh my god Nat, what if he looks at us?"
"Mads, I think I would die if Joe Burrow even glanced in my direction."
As the girls next to you spoke, Joe locked eyes with you. A smirk started to make its way onto his face as he pulled his gaze off of you. He turned around and continued to walk down the sidelines until he stopped next to Ja'marr.
"Hmmm," Macee hummed, "I wonder who Joey was locking eyes with. Last time I checked he's single."
You couldn't tell her it was you. There's too much to explain and like you’ve mentioned, you can't tell her here.
"Maybe he's got a secret girl." you said, wiggling your eyebrows.
Macee chuckled, "Maybe."
The Dolphins couldn't do much with the ball, punting it back to the Bengals. Joe Mixon had a nice run, gaining about ten yards. However, after his run the guys couldn't get anything going. Joe Mixon was brought down immediately on second down and Joe overthrew Ja'marr on third down. Evan came out onto the field to try and make a 57 yarder—which he nailed, bringing the Bengals lead up 20-15. The rest of the game went by quickly, the Dolphins were struggling on both offense and defense.
There was about three minutes left of the game, the Bengals still had the lead and possession of the ball. The ball was on the Bengals 40 and it was 1st and 10. Joe snapped the ball and dropped back to pass, throwing a 20 yard pass to Tyler Boyd, giving the Bengals another first down. They ran on the next play, trying to eat up the clock. After picking up yardage and a few first downs, it was finally the two minute warning. The ball was now on the Dolphins 45 yard line. Just a few more plays and the Bengals could increase their lead, meaning the Dolphins would need a miracle in order to win the game.
Macee started to tap her foot nervously as she chewed on her thumbnail.
You looked over at her and smiled, "You okay?"
She shook her head, letting out a laugh, "Yeah, just nervous."
"I can tell," you reached out and put your hand on her shoulder, "but I'm confident they'll win."
Both of you turned your attention back to the game. There was two minutes left on the clock. As soon as Joe snapped the ball, the clock started.
1:59
Joe dropped back to pass, looking for an open receiver.
1:58
He threw the ball, lofting it into the air. Tee caught it and took off sprinting.
1:57...1:56...155
You and Macee both held your breath as you watched him run down the field, going past the 15, the 10, the 5, until he was brought down at the 2-yard line. The offense lined up and Joe snapped the ball.
1:54..1:53...
Joe threw the ball and it was caught by Hayden Hurst for a Bengals touchdown!
The crowd broke out into cheering. You and Macee jumped up and down, screaming and cheering right along with them. Evan kicked the extra point, making the score 27-15.
The atmosphere of the stadium was just incredible. You think it's safe to say you picked a good game to attend for your first ever Bengals game. The "Who Dey" chant broke out amongst the stadium, some of the Bengals players even joining in on the chanting.
The rest of the game flew by. The Bengals beat the Dolphins 27-15, giving the Bengals their second win of the season and the Dolphins their first loss.
You and Macee left the stands and went out to the area where the concessions are. It was extremely crowded, full of fans trying to exit the stadium.
"Here," Macee said, grabbing your hand, "follow me."
You followed behind her as she pushed her way through the crowd. You had no idea where you were going, but you figured Macee knew. After a few minutes of pushing through the exiting fans, Macee brought you to an area where a few girls wearing Bengals merch were standing around and talking with one another.
Macee let go of your hand and smiled, "Some of the wives and I wait here after every game. The guys will come through here soon. And who knows," her mouth quirked up in a playful smirk as she gently elbowed your side, "maybe someone will catch your eye."
A few moments later, the players started to walk through the tunnel. Sam and Logan walked out together. Logans face lit up instantly when he saw Macee.
"Hey baby girl!" He exclaimed, holding his arms out for her. She walked up to him and jumped into his arms. He held onto her tightly, the two of them smiling widely.
"I'm so proud of you, babe. You did great!"
He kissed her cheek and set her down on the ground so he could kiss her lips.
He pulled away and pulled her into another hug, "Thank you sweetheart. It's because I had you so close to me this time." He said with a smirk.
Macee chuckled and grabbed his hand, "Come here, I have someone I want you to meet."
She brought him over to where you were standing. Oh no. This could be bad. You thought to yourself.
Macee has no clue, but You’ve already met Logan that night a few weeks ago that Joe had him and Ja'marr over to the apartment after practice.
Logan smiled as he saw you, “Oh, hey Y/n!”
Damnit.
"Hi Logan. How are you?"
Macees eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "Wait, you know her?" she turned to you, “you know him?"
Logan nodded, "Yeah, I saw her at Jo-."
You rapidly shook your head no, making Logan's eyes widen.
"Jolene's." he finished.
"Jolene's?" Macee questioned, cocking her head to the side and crossing her arms.
He nodded, "Yup."
"Jolene's the lingerie store?"
You grimaced. This can't get any worse, right?
"Aye Burrow look, it's Y/n!”
It got worse. You closed your eyes and let out a heavy sigh. When you opened them again you saw Ja'marr and Joe had joined Macee, Logan, and yourself. Macee looked back and forth between you and the three guys, a look of both confusion and disbelief on her face.
"I am so confused. You know them?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.
You sighed, "It's a long story. A very long story, that I planned on telling you at lunch next week, but I guess I can't do that now."
She nodded, "Yeah, it seems like it. So how do you know them?"
You felt terrible that this is how Macee is going to find out about you and Joe being roommates.
"Babe," Logan spoke up, “remember how I came back home from Joe's apartment a couple weeks ago and told you about his roommate?"
She nodded, "Yeah, you said he has some random girl named Y/n living with him." Her mouth gaped open and her eyes widened as she finished her sentence.
"You're Joes roommate!?" she asked, completely shocked.
Joe nodded, "Yup. She's my roommate."
Macee shocked expression turned to a smile, "Oh my god, Y/n? This is crazy!?"
"Tell me about it." Joe said with a sigh.
"You have to tell me all about how this even happened." She said, eagerly.
You laughed, "Don't worry, I will."
Macee's smile switched to a smirk as she turned to Joe.
"Wait a minute."
Joe raised his eyebrows.
Macee continued, "During the game, when you were walking down the sidelines and gazing up into the crowd, it was Y/n that you were eyeing wasn't it?"
You looked up at Joe, seeing a faint blush make its way onto his cheeks.
"Maybe." Was all he said.
Logan laughed, "Oh he totally has the hots for her."
Joe shook his head and laughed, "Yeah right," he looked down at you as he spoke, "She was looking at me first."
You felt heat rise to your cheeks as Ja'marr and Logan let out a chorus of "oooo's". Macee waved them off, "Oh come on, leave poor Y/n alone."
You smiled, mouthing a thank you.
She smiled, "You're welcome. Now, Logan and I are going to head out. We have a very important win to celebrate."
Logan put his arm around Macee and pulled her into his side. He wiggled his eyes brows as he spoke, "Oh baby, now you've got me all excited."
Macee chuckled, "Good." She let go of Logan and walked over to you, pulling you into a tight hug.
"Thank you for coming to this game with me tonight, Y/n. I had a blast!"
You squeezed her gently and said, "Thank you for inviting me! It was a lot of fun."
When you pulled away from each other, you gave her an apologetic look.
"I'm sorry for not telling you about all of this sooner. I wanted to tell you during lunch next week, but,"
She shook her head, "Y/n it's okay. Don't be sorry. You can still tell me all the details over lunch."  She said with a wink.
You nodded, flashing her a genuine smile, "Sounds good to me."
She smiled, "Awesome, I'll see you later."
Macee walked back over to Logan and grabbed his hand.
"Bye guys, great job tonight!" She said to Joe and Ja'marr before her and Logan began to walk away. She stopped in her tracks and turned around.
"Do you need a ride Y/n?"
"Oh, I'll ju-."
You were cut off by Joe. "I'll take her home."
She smiled, "Okay. Bye guys." Her and Logan exited the stadium, leaving you with Joe, Ja'marr, and a few other players and their wives.
You were about to say something to Joe when you heard your name being called from a few feet away.
"Y/n!"
You looked around, looking for whoever called your name. It was Emma. She was waving you over to where she was standing with Sam and Evan McPherson. You smiled, excusing yourself from Joe and Ja'marr before joining Emma, Sam, and Evan.
"Sam, this is who I was telling you about. This is Y/n. shes Macee's friend." Emma said, gesturing to you.
He held his hand out for you to shake. You shook it and smiled, "Hi, I'm Y/n.”
"Sam." He said with a nod.
Emma smiled, "And Y/n this," she gestured to the tall brunette standing next to Sam, "is Evan."
Evan smiled as you shook hands. His cheeks were slightly red as he grew flustered from your hands touching.
"Hi Y/n. it's really nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too. You did awesome tonight, by the way."
He blushed, laughing lightly, "Thanks."
You smiled warmly at him. “You're welcome."
"You know, Emma was telling me a little bit about you."
"Yeah?" You asked, raising an eyebrow.
He nodded, "Yeah. I uh, I'd love to get your number, if that's okay?"
You glanced over at Emma. She nodded.
"Sure." You said, a small smile pulling at your lips.
He grinned, "Okay, sweet."
As you exchanged phone numbers, you felt butterflies in your stomach. Evan seemed like a very nice guy and even though you’re not ready for a relationship quite yet, you’d love to get to know him a bit more.
You said goodbye to the three of them and walked back over to Joe and Ja'marr. Joe put his phone back in his pocket with a sigh when he saw you come back.
"Ready to go?" he asked.
You nodded. You both said goodbye to Ja'marr and walked out of the stadium. Thankfully, It wasn't too long of a walk to Joe's car. You opened the passenger door and got in. As soon as you were both buckled, Joe put his hand on your headrest and looked behind him as he backed out of the spot. You couldn’t help but stare at his features and notice the way his defined jaw clenched as he looked out the back window of the car. Once he had backed out, he put the car into drive and pulled out of the stadium
"So, how'd you enjoy your first Bengals game?" He asked, breaking the silence between the two of you.
"I loved it."
He glanced at you, “Yeah?"
You nodded, "Yeah. It was a lot of fun, plus, you guys won so that makes it even better."
He chuckled, "Yeah, that always makes the games fun."
You sat in silence for a bit before he spoke up again.
"You know, I think I was right."
You furrowed your brows in confusion. "About what?"
"You wouldn't be able to keep your eyes off me." He teased, smirking as he spoke.
You rolled your eyes and scoffed, "Oh please, it was just once that I couldn't."
He looked over at you and gave you a look of amusement.
You sighed, "Okay, fine, a couple times."
Joe chuckled at your admission.
"But it's only because the girls next to me wouldn't shut up about you."
"Mhm, blame the fans, Y/n.” He teased.
You just rolled your eyes at him. Other than the faint sound of Kid Cudi playing from the Aux, the rest of the ride back to the apartment was silent. You looked out the window of Joe's car and thought about the game tonight.
You truly had a blast. So much happened in one night. You went to your first NFL game, you made new friends, you told Macee your roommates with the quarterback of the team, and you got the kickers number—all in one night!
You don't know what'll happen within the next few weeks, but one things for certain.
Your crazy journey in Cincinnati is just getting started.

Joe Burrow x reader
Warnings: language, mention of blood
Word count: 843
Request: Could you do a joe burrow period imagine?
A/n: this is super short, but I hope you'll like it! also the fact I really started my period when writing this, is crazyyyy !!!!!
now I just need joe to make me feel better (jk i'm not gonna do miss oliva like that, unless...….. she know how to fight👀)
════════════════════════
Taking a deep breath, you trotted up the walkway towards the front door as dull aches of pain shot through your lower stomach. It was one thing to have to deal with the monthly curse, but for it to actually roll in while you're at work was another thing. It was one of the rare times you didn't come prepared, and the discharge of the blood was quite a lot soaking the front area of your pants. Of course you immediately left early, At least you thought to wear dark pants.
Unlocking the door, you were met with silence thanking the gods Joe was more likely at the gym with his teammates, you really weren't in the mood for talking to anybody as mean as it sounds you couldn't help it, the start of your day was already shitty now it just got even more shitty. But hey, at least you're at home?
You maneuver your way throughout the semi large house to the bedroom you share with Joe, and head to the connected bathroom quickly stripping away your soiled clothing. The heated water hits your skin reducing any irritation you've had before as you close your eyes letting the shower take care of you.
After you got out of the lengthy shower, you changed into some comfy clothing which includes Joe's old LSU sweatshirt and a pair of black biker shorts. However as soon as you stepped out of the shower the cramps came back, seemingly much worse as if your body was telling you to stay underneath the steaming water forever.
Now snuggling up in bed with blankets and a heed of pillows, along with a heating pad nuzzling against your stomach. Gently shaking your foot hoping to somehow ease the pain, your once stable emotional state begins to shrivel up, and soon you don't know what caused it but your eyes begin to swell up with tears causing you to cry not having a clue why. Of course you knew it had something to do with your monthly cycle, bringing out your incredibly emotional side.
Unbeknownst to you Joe who just arrived, was making his way upstairs to make sure you were okay, after noticing your car in the driveway. As he grew closer to the bedroom his worry increased as sniffles could be heard.
"Hey babe, what's wrong?"
You jumped in shock at hearing your boyfriend's voice, lifting your head up to see him walking in dressed in his gym shorts and muscle shirt covered in slight sweat, one short strand of hair fell on his forehead. You peeled your eyes away from him, before you really got into your hormones.
"Nothing." You mumbled, wincing as you felt another cramp.
"Doesn't sound like anything, are you sure you're okay?" He asked again, this time sitting on the side of the bed, softly rubbing your back.
"I'm fine, go take a shower you stink." Your words muffled as you bury your face into the mounts of pillows, relishing in Joe's hand rubbing your back.
"I don't care, I'm not leaving until you tell me what's wrong." He sighed, continuing to rub your back.
"I'm on my period, and in a lot of pain right now." You grumbled shifting your legs into a more comfortable position.
"Hm." He hummed in realization. "That'll explain the heating pad, do you need anything before I jump in the shower?"
Immediately you shook your head, it was just your monthly cycle you weren't completely unstable. With a kiss on your forehead, he proceeded towards the bathroom and soon you heard the water running, in no time you began to drift off to sleep listening to the shower.
About thirty five minutes deep into your slumber, a hand was gently shaking your shoulder. "Babe, open them pretty eyes. I made you some tea and got some snacks."
Your vision sleep-blurred as you sat up yawning, not caring how you looked you glanced towards the right noticing a shirtless Joe setting a cup of tea down on the nightstand as he held a couple of nature valley bars, teddy grahams, and a bag of white cheddar popcorn. Not the typical snacks you'd eat, but you weren't certainly complaining in fact your heart fluttered at the gesture.
"Thank you so much." You gushed, as he bent down to kiss your cheek, before snuggling in the bed beside you.
"You scared me, ya know?" He paused, looking down at you. "When I found you crying earlier."
Guilt and embarrassment washed right over you, as you remembered your unnecessary weeping for a reason you still couldn't find.
"M' sorry about that, I just had a really bad day and this just added fuel to it." You concluded.
"Don't apologize, just make sure you call me next time, so I can be here sooner to make you feel better." He professed, pulling you in to cuddle you more.
You smiled up at him, the butterflies in your stomach going crazy every time you look at him. "I'll make sure I do."

(part 3 of my advertising agency office au. read part 1 and/or part 2)
When Nicky returns to the office the next morning, a folded piece of paper sits, draped over the width of his keyboard. He places down his bag, shucks off the sweatshirt he wore today in place of his jacket, and lifts the paper. He opens it.
It’s the copier technician’s bill, with a post-it note stuck over the due amount. Scribbled in loose cursive, the post-it reads, Charge to Nicolo di Genova. Frowning, Nicky lifts the post-it to see the amount it hides. He immediately wishes he hadn’t.
That is a lot of zeros.
Slowly his coworkers trickle in around him, and the office hums to life.
Nicky lowers the bill, not totally sure what to do. That’s a full month’s pay. His chair creaks under his weight as he flops down, and a shot of panic surges through him. The last thing he needs is to break his chair as well. He’ll have to be more careful. He’ll have to -
How is he ever going to be able to pay this?
Elbows on the armrests, he drops his face into his hands.
He doesn’t hear anyone enter his cubicle until they politely clear their throat.
Nicky tilts his head, fingers half-covering his face, and sees Joe standing at the opening of Nicky’s cubicle. Nicky’s green jacket is draped over one of his arms, and Joe stares down at it.
“I’m sorry to bother you, Nicky, but I was wondering if...” Joe glances up, and in a moment, his entire demeanor shifts, tightening. His shoulders straighten. His eyes widen with concern. “Are you alright? What’s happening?”
“What?” Nicky says, because how can he tell Joe - beautiful, talented Joe - that Nicky’s about to go bankrupt over a paper jam.
“Forgive me.” Joe steps into the cubicle, and though a distance of two feet still separates them, Nicky feels immediate comfort from the closeness, and from the soft kindness of his words. “But you look as if the world is ending.”
Nicky thinks of lying, thinks of forcing a laugh and say he is fine. But something deep inside of his chest rejects the idea. He doesn’t want to lie to Joe.
Instead, Nicky plucks the folded slip of paper of his desk and passes it to Joe. Joe flips it open. He mouths the words on the post-it, and lifts it. The open concern on his face shifts abruptly to murder.
“Joe.” Nicky rises. He means to take the paper back, but Joe holds it in a tight grip, crinkling the edges.
“I’m going to speak to him,” Joe says.
Nicky imagines Joe throwing the paper in Merrick’s face and getting immediately fired. “It’s not a big deal,” Nicky says, though it is. It’s a lousy, terrible thing for an employer to do to an employee, and surely not legal. But Merrick doesn’t care about that, any of it, so long as he gets his way. “It’s not worth your time.”
For a moment, Joe lifts his eyes to Nicky, and somewhere between the paper and Nicky’s face, Joe’s gaze shifts from a harsh glare to utter softness.
“Oh, Nicolò. You are worth far more than you think.”
The words settle over Nicky like a warm blanket, and he wants to burrow in them. But he is not helpless, and will not have Joe thinking so. “I can fight my own battles.”
Joe shakes his head. “I owe you a service, for the one you gifted me last night.” He folds the paper and tucks it into his pocket. When it is gone from view, Nicky takes a deeper breath than any since he walked into his cubicle and saw the paper sitting there.
Hands free, Joe removes the green jacket from his arm. “You saved my life last night.”
Light with relief, Nicky can’t help the small smile. “You were in no danger of dying.”
“It’s impossible to say now,” Joe mirrors his smile ten-fold. It’s blinding, like sunshine, and warms Nicky all over. Joe holds out the jacket. “Grazie, Nicolò.” As Nicky takes the jacket, Joe says, softer, “I mean it.”
Nicky dips his head, hiding his warming cheeks. “How did you know it was me?”
“I didn’t.”
Nicky looks up. Joe’s gaze has softened impossibly further, into a fondness so alien to Nicky he’s stunned and silent.
And Joe says, “I hoped.”
*
When the copier technician’s bill crosses Nicky’s desk again, much later in the day, it is properly labeled and marked for accounting, to be paid by check from the company’s funds.
Nicky continues his day’s work. On his phone, he loads his resume to a job search website, and, if he submits it to other ad agencies that also have openings for graphic designers, who would know but him?

Every Road Leads Back to You (Ben Hardy x Joe Mazzello)
Summary:  Joe is on holiday in Europe, visiting the BoRhap boys.  His visit to Ben, who is on set in Belfast filming Pixie, brings up many emotions in each of them, and helps them gain some clarity.
A/N:  The IG and Tumblr postings of these two have worn me down!  In this angsty story Ben and Joe, are dealing with their own personal and professional struggles.  In my professional life, I coach people to help them succeed in their jobs and work situations.  This story made me think about the strains of an acting career.   The title is from the Bette Midler song, “Every Road Leads Back to you” from the enjoyable, emotional movie, “For the Boys.”  Song lyrics in the story, which came to me as I wrote, are bolded and referenced at the end.
Thank you!: I’d like to thank all the great FanFic writers and Fandom members who entertain and inspire me.  Special shout outs to @deakysgurl for beta reading this for me; @jessahmewren, my first Tumblr author, encourager and connection;  and @m0etenchandon, @freddie-mercurial, @dayoneliveaid @brownhardyho @brianmay-be @deacytits @deacysfabottomedgirl @its-our-paris @queenismykween
Warnings:  Angst, Love, loss of a parent, some longing. Figuring out life, love and work stuff!!
Joe was on holiday! Following the golf tournament with Gwilym, Joe arrived in Venice and joined Rami, Lucy, and other friends on a luxurious boat ride.  They realized they were being followed by a slew of paparazzi.  They indulged them for a while and finally shut it down by turning their backs and flipping them the bird, successfully causing them to scatter.
As their boat docked, Joe’s attention turned to the last leg of his trip-seeing his best buddy of them all in Belfast, where he was filming.  A smile spread across his face and he took a deep breath, anticipating their reunion.   It had been a long time.
He paused on the dock and texted Ben: “Hey, wrapping in Venice and looking forward to heading to your neck of the woods tomorrow.  Got a Noon plane-should get to you around 6:00.  Please send your address.”
He eyed his phone for a few minutes as Rami spoke, awaiting a response.
“We’re heading to dinner, want to join us, Joe?” Rami asked.
“Thanks, but I’m gonna head back to the hotel,” Joe said.  “I have some things to catch up on before I head out tomorrow.”
“Oh, right,” Rami smiled. “You’re going to visit Ben. I’m sure he could use a break.  Please send him our love. I’m so glad we had this time together.  Love you, dude.”  Joe hugged Rami and Lucy good-bye.
He glanced at his phone as he walked toward a cab.  No response.
Joe retreated to his hotel room. He changed, worked out, got dinner, and left a message for his agent, eager to hear if he solidified an audition for him for a Netflix mini-series and a movie role. He became agitated at the uncertainty-both about career plans-and his imminent travel.  He checked his phone again hoping for a text, still no response. His agitation grew.
That night, Joe lay in bed.  His future held a number of uncertainties-will he need to move to LA again or go on location if he gets these roles? Are these the best he can get?  What about his family, who were still adjusting to the new normal?  It was overwhelming to think about.  Eager to calm and distract himself, he laid back and let his mind flash to warm and wonderful images of BoRhrap: filming over long days; grabbing late night meals; sharing endless jokes; working together so easily.  Suddenly, his breath hitched as he thought about the suffering that intruded into those happy times.  His eyes watered, remembering how he unraveled in slow motion when answered his ringing phone to his sister’s teary voice. Even now, it was hard to believe his dad was gone.   His knees had buckled after hanging up with her. The boys raised him up, physically and emotionally, encircling him as his tears flowed.  He remembered glancing at Ben, whose green eyes burrowed into him, visibly tearing up himself, as he squeezed Joe’s shoulder in their huddled group embrace.
Returning to his present restless night, he didn’t grant those emotions permission to invade him, and he switched his inner screen to the next reel of happier times: the movie premiere and the interviews, as the film rocked the world; the whirlwind of Awards nominations; the Oscars; and their playful Instagram posts, featuring Hardzello and Cardy-B.
Over time, the hype and glow of the movie faded, and the boys parted to pursue other endeavors.  Ben travelled extensively, working on multiple projects.  Calls were strained and rushed.  “I gotta go, buddy…I’m sorry….I  hope we can see each other -- next month, maybe, yeah?”
“Yeah, I know.  Let me know, and I’ll get a ticket…” Joe had responded before he heard Ben carrying on another conversation as the call disconnected.
He missed his dear friend and the times they shared, on and off the set - and the love.  Joe had not allowed himself to dig deeply into what that love meant.  He just knew the magic of those 12 months were like nothing he ever experienced, and he wanted to have Ben in his life.   “When I look and I find…I still love you. (1). And without him, there was an emptiness.
Suddenly, his phone pinged. “Hi, here’s the address….”
That was it.  Not “Can’t wait to see you!”  He felt a little dismissed.  Was Ben fitting him in as a favor?
‘Great, see you soon!” he responded. Relieved to have the details set, he fell asleep, rising early to head to the airport.  He ran to the gate after security dragged for over an hour. Settling into his seat, he welcomed the stillness.
Joe ordered a drink, downed it quickly and then fell asleep as the plane took off.  The sleep became restless as he pictured the visit, fueled by Ben’s less-than-enthusiastic text.  He pictured arriving at Ben’s modern flat with floor to ceiling windows that looked out high over the city.  He envisioned Ben’s co-stars there-mingling, snacking and drinking, easy laughter flowing. He saw Ben in his element, giving hugs, cracking private jokes, looking vibrant, fit and elegant, his new friends fawning over him. Though Ben would try to fill Joe in on the jokes, Joe pictured himself feeling awkward - and replaced.  Joe’s eyes flew open as the plane landed; his heart pounding and tears welled in his eyes, those images of Ben’s new friendships stinging him. It was a mistake to come here, he thought. His stomach tightened as he pictured himself cast in the role as outsider.
“Landed” Joe texted to Ben as he grabbed a cab.  The cab dropped him off and he ambled up the path to the non-descript apartment complex. He knocked on Ben’s door softly.
The door was opened by a solemn Ben. “You made it.  Come in.”  Ben said with a tense grin.  Joe took a deep breath to brace himself and walked through the door tentatively.  He stopped and breathed a sigh of relief.  Ben was alone. There was no party.  No laughter. No new friends.  The furnished apartment was dreary; the living room was lit by one standing lamp with a heavy shade that emitted a dim light, next to the worn couch. There were empty take out containers on the coffee table and free weights strewn about the floor, along with a pile of newspapers and other assorted items.  This wasn’t like Ben, Joe thought, knowing that he was pretty meticulous and organized about his surroundings and himself.
Joe put his bag down and looked up at Ben.  Their eyes locked.  “Hey Buddy,” Joe said as he leaned in to hug him.  Ben hugged him back tentatively and broke the hug quickly. “You want a beer?” Ben asked, as he headed through the small living room toward the back of the small apartment to the tiny windowless kitchen, situated between the living room and bedroom.  “Sure,” Joe replied as he followed Ben.
Ben swung the refrigerator door open to get the beers and Joe peered in behind him.  “Dude, you got things growing and dying in there.  What’s up???” Joe asked with a smirk, feigning outrage.  Ben chuckled. It felt good to laugh.  He had to admit, some things just sounded better with an American accent.  Ben grabbed two beers and as he went to close the frig, Joe held the door open.  “Ok, this needs to be addressed.  Like. Now.”  Joe started quickly removing items from the fridge to the small counter and gathered a handful of rotten food, motioning to the garbage can, which Ben brought over.  “You travelled all this way to clean out my fridge?” Ben asked with crooked grin and a raised eyebrow.
“Aha!” Joe said.  “Takeout rice and chicken, salvageable veggies.”   I can make us a stir-fry!!  And organize your fridge.  You get two for the price of the one. Are you hungry?”
“Uh yeah, that would be great. Thanks.” Actually, Ben wasn’t sure if he was hungry.  He should be. He had toast in the morning and snacks during brief breaks at the catering tent.  His stomach was in knots most of the time, the stress he felt taking up residence there and throwing off his natural patterns.  Ben liked that Joe took charge-to help bring some order into his world, feeling his own tenuous grip  – and he was moved that Joe took steps to care for him.
“Great.  I’ll get this together in a few minutes.  You look tired? Why don’t you sit down and rest?”
“Actually”, Ben said,” I think I’ll take a shower-if that’s ok.”  He put the beers on the kitchen table.
“Sure, sure.”  Ben headed to the bathroom off the bedroom in the back of the flat.  Joe got to work, chopping veggies, heating up the rice and chicken, and creating a sauce. He always felt comfortable in the kitchen and loved to cook.  And there was nothing he’d rather do at this moment then take care of Ben, who was out of sorts.  His eyes didn’t have their usual sparkle and he seemed tense, down and distracted, listless almost. Clearly something was plaguing Ben and he needed to figure it out. As dinner cooked, Joe finished cleaning and organizing the fridge.
Ben came into the kitchen fresh from the shower, running a towel through his glossy hair. He was wearing fresh jeans and a sweatshirt.  Joe couldn’t stop his eyes from lingering on Ben, who literally took Joe’s breath away. Joe turned his body away from the blonde to shift his focus.  “Perfect timing.  Dinner is served,” he said in a British accent, pleased that he remembered how to breath after that brief arousal-and how to slip into a British accent.   He hastily set the table and served the meal.
Ben chuckled at Joe’s mock service. “This was nice of you.  Thanks,” he said, sitting down and throwing the towel on the table.  He rolled the food over his plate gracefully with the fork, taking a few bites to his mouth. Eager to distract the conversation away from himself, he peppered Joe with questions.
““I saw the pap pictures.  Nice ending there,” he smiled.  “How are Rami and Lucy?” he asked.
“Oh, you know, nauseatingly happy and cute, can’t keep their hands off each other for a second.  And that Rami…has a million projects lined up-he sets the world on fire, he can burn brighter than the sun.” (2)  Ben nodded and raised other topics to steer the conversation: The World Cup, Brian and Roger touring with Adam-and how happy they looked.
Ben worked hard to get a few forkfuls in his mouth between the strained discussion.  The food was nourishing and tasty, lovingly prepared by Joe.  He wished he was able to appreciate it.
Joe noticed Ben’s hesitation and stared at him.  “You don’t like it? I mean, I know we’re not at the Oscars After-Party…”
“I do, I do, I’m just…” Ben let his voice trail.  He could feel he was close to the floodgates opening.  It took every ounce of concentration to hold his emotions inside and project a light demeanor, his best acting of the day.  He desperately wanted to show his appreciation to Joe for visiting and taking care of him.  He just wanted things to be normal.  “I’m good,” Ben blurted out, “Really. Just done in by today’s taping.  His folded-up demeanor and dark eyes belied his sentiment.
Joe saw right through it.  “Well, don’t take this the wrong way, but you don’t look good.  I mean, you look sad…distraught really.  And look at this place. It’s a hell hole.  It’s not like you to live like this.  Something’s troubling you.  Please tell me what’s going on.” Joe urged.
Ben looked down and placed his fork on the plate.  Tears gathered in his eyes. “It’s been so horrible.  The script is a mess, constant rewrites.  The director is an asshole. He keeps changing his mind and asking for retakes.  He gets frustrated when we can’t get things right immediately.  How can we? The lines keep changing!! Everyone is so frustrated and tense.  I like the cast ok, but we’ve all actually been bickering.  I hate it.  I wish I never signed on.  It’s so unlike BoRhap.  I …I”
His voice cut off and the tears started to flow down his cheeks.  Joe stood and helped Ben up.  “Come on, let’s sit on the couch,” he said, as he escorted the younger man a few steps into the living room and eased him onto the couch, sitting beside him.  Ben started to heave, his body shaking, as the last two months of pent up frustration, sadness and stress spilled out of him.
“Oh, Ben, oh, Buddy,” Joe leaned into him and hugged him, feeling Ben’s body tense up and shake with emotion finally being let loose.  Joe’s mind raced. He felt totally ill-equipped to soothe Ben.  He recalled his jealous feelings of earlier in the day and felt guilty. While he didn’t want to be replaced, he certainly didn’t want his friend to be miserable.  He felt so selfish-not thinking of what was going on with Ben that led him to be distant.
Joe felt panicked about how to be in the moment with Ben. He took a deep breath and rubbed Ben’s back. He faced him and looked into his eyes, ran his fingers though his hair and then put both of his arms on the younger man’s shoulders.  “Hey. Listen to me.  I know you’re overwrought.  But you can do this. You’re a great actor.  You can’t take all the crap personally.  Whatever they expect-It’s inside of you-you’ll tap into it.  Then you’ll get to the other side of it.”  He brought him in for a close hug, as Ben whimpered.  “It’s ok.  You’ll be ok,” Joe soothed.  Ben stayed in Joe’s arms, letting his friend take on his emotions.
“I feel so badly you have been suffering.  I should have reached out more…” Joe mumbled.
“I didn’t either. I couldn’t.” Ben said. “I felt like a failure. I guess I wanted you to think I was in control.  That I was a professional and could handle anything.”
“You are - and you can.”  Joe replied without missing a beat.
“I wanted to keep the image going. That I’m this leading actor who has it all together.   When in fact, it is all so close to falling apart-and has been for awhile.”  Ben added.
“You don’t have to keep up an image with me.  Look, I know you can do this-you are so talented and you have such a broad bandwidth. This is not an easy career, we’ve chosen.  People see the photo shoots and the bloopers, the interviews and the red carpet.  It looks so easy when they’re in the theater stuffing their faces with popcorn.  We know it requires the constant firing of every synapse in our bodies through grueling days, weaving so much detail together on the spot, and adjusting to constant changes-set, wardrobe, spacing, lines. Plus, we have to tap into the deepest emotional parts of ourselves and our characters constantly.  Remember: We had challenges on BoRhap.  Sure now, we remember the glory and the fun – but there were tough times and we got through them.” Joe said.
Joe stopped talking.  Ben nodded into his neck. He felt Ben heard him. His crying softened.  Joe held him tightly and Ben leaned into Joe between his legs, wrapping his arms around Joe.  And with that embrace, the rest of the world fell away for Joe-the trip, his agent, his family, his next projects, his home.  All of it just faded out of focus.  None of it mattered.  Only Ben mattered.
Ben pulled away, taking a deep breath that coiled through his body.  “I’m sorry.  I know this isn’t what you signed up for when you thought ‘Great, let me visit Ben in Belfast as part of my European holiday.’ You didn’t think you’d find a blubbering, wrecked mess.”  He wiped his nose on his sleeve.
Joe gazed at him.  “I just wanted to be with you.” Ben’s swallowed deeply. Joe continued,  “I feel like I’m always planning, trying to map out every part of my life.  I’m always on my way to something new. But it doesn't matter, cause no matter where I go, every road just seems to lead me back to you.  You’re the one I still want beside me.” (3)
They’re eyes locked, as they held each other’s arms.
Suddenly,  Ben’s phone pinged and he broke from Joe to grab it off the kitchen table. “I have to be on set tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.”
“Good,” Said Joe.  “You can sleep in.” Joe stood up  “It’s late.  We should hit the hay. I can just set up camp here.” He said, as he moved a tattered throw pillow to the arm of the couch.
“No,” Ben said, “Share the bed with me.  Come on, you did it with Cardy B.  Don’t make me jealous.”
They both laughed and moved to the back of the flat.
Joe cleaned up in the kitchen while Ben did his evening ablutions and got into bed. Joe grabbed his bag from the living room, prepared for bed and joined him soon after.
“Goodnight, Ben.  Sleep well.”  Joe said, as he settled into the soft bed and pillow.
Ben turned to look at Joe.  “Goodnight, Joe. And thanks. Thanks for listening and calming me down.  And for helping me focus.  You have no idea how much it helped. I’m going to remember what you said.   I feel like I might finally get a real night’s sleep. Finally.”
Joe smiled.  “Of course.  Glad I could help.” He thought about the advice he gave to Ben and realized it could apply to him too.  He has it in him to deal with whatever happens-and he’ll get to the other side of it too.
They drifted off to sleep.  Joe awoke in the middle of night, aware of movement beside him. Ben was rolling a bit and mumbling to himself.  “Get to the other side….”
“You ok, Ben?”  Joe asked him softy.
Ben didn’t respond, clearly asleep. Suddenly he rolled toward Joe and put his arm around him and spooned into him.  “I love you.” Ben mumbled.
Joe leaned back against him.  “And I.love.you.back.” he whispered.

roses are red, violets are blue, I may bleed out, but I still love you
Pairing: Joe Mazzello x Reader
Words: 3.2k
AN: Look, this was supposed to be just a little sweet, funny drabble for Valentine’s Day, but yeah, apparently it’s a one-shot now. I regret nothing. Comments are appreciated <3
Warnings: swearing, slightly implied smut
Joe was acting… well, weird. Or rather weirder than usual. You were not sure what was happening. He made you your favourite breakfast, he even had managed to get fresh raspberries and blueberries to go with the pancakes, and he brewed your favourite tea. And this time he even had left the bag in for as long as the instructions on the box required, which was the first time, since he usually got distracted when making tea and the drink turned bitter. The whole morning, Joe was fussing about everything you did. He asked you several times how well you had slept, and whether you had had a nice dream or not. He asked you about your plans for the day, when you were going to come back from work and whether you were going to do anything specific tonight. Your answers were wary, still not sure where he was going with the inquiries. You had slept well, and you were pretty sure that you had dreamed of something but couldn’t for the love of God remember what it had been about. You should be back around five p.m., and no, there were no plans for tonight. He just nodded his head, muttered a quick, “good, good,” and asked another question. You were usually enjoying his attention but the sudden preoccupation with your person seemed too much.
He also kept touching you, but the touches were very innocent – a little caress on your hand, a gentle brush of his fingers on your hip, a little pat on your shoulder – although that one was a bit awkward. It happened when you reached to the top shelf in your kitchen to grab a lunchbox just as Joe pulled out two cups, and he bumped into you. He pulled you to his side to stop your movement, since he’d thrown you off balance. He looked down at your lips but let go of you immediately. You stared at him for a moment, a bit dumbfounded by his odd behaviour, but he just smiled and patted your shoulder. Patted your shoulder? What the hell! Why? You gaped at him some more and he left you standing there with your mouth open, moving to the kitchen bar with his tea. Eventually, you sat down next to him. Why was he like this? Even when your napkin fell down on the floor, he rushed to pick it up for you as if you were not perfectly capable of doing that yourself.
When you finished the meal, packed your things up and said your goodbyes, you went to kiss him on the lips, but he turned his head at the last moment, and your lips pecked his cheek instead. “See you in the afternoon,” he said, ushering you out, and the door closed behind you. You started walking but soon stopped in your tracks to gather your thoughts. He had been sending you mixed signals the whole time, and it had left you utterly confused. One the one hand, he had been very attentive, with the breakfast and the seemingly accidental touches, but on the other hand, he had not kissed you. Why, though? Had you done or said something wrong? Had he done or said something wrong?
You turned back on your heel, wanting to stride right back in and ask him what the hell was happening, but then decided against it. It was Joe. Sometimes, his actions just lacked any reasonable explanation. Who knew what was happening in the head of his. But to be honest, that was one of the reasons why you had fallen in love with him in the first place. He kept surprising you, sometimes doing the craziest things that no one would have thought of. But usually, it brought you amusement and not confusion as it had that morning. You were running late to work anyway, no need to infuriate your boss some more. You raced down the stairs of the apartment block, outside into the morning winter cold. Wrapping yourself up in your coat, you resolved to talk with Joe in the afternoon. Puffs of air leaving your lips, you burrowed further into your scarf and caught a taxi.
With your nose in your phone, trying to deal with work emails, you entered the office. As soon as you opened the door, you noticed that the chatter of your co-workers was much louder than usual, and you raised your eyes from the screen of your phone. You were surprised by the avalanche of pink and red paper hearts and balloons, your colleagues milling around the office as if there was no work to be done, and you thought it might be “Love Is All Around Me” coming from the radio.
“Happy Valentine’s Day!” your friend and colleague Tina rushed to you and gave you a hug and a peck on your cheek.
“Hi,” you said and absentmindedly rose on your tiptoes to return the embrace, not paying much attention to her words. “What’s going on?” you asked a bit stupidly, considering the decoration.
“Halloween, can’t you tell?” she mocked you and burst into laughter. “Are you deaf? It’s Valentine’s Day!”
Wait, what? When had that happened? Wasn’t Christmas just a few weeks ago? You had never paid way too much attention to this pseudo-holiday, anyway. Just an ordinary day in the calendar that only reminded single people that they were alone. No, thank you. And you shared this attitude with Joe, since a few women had broken his heart already and he loathed this day just as much as you did. When you had started dating you agreed that you both were not the kind of people who celebrate Valentine’s Day. No gifts, no special acts of affection, only an evening and night spent in each other’s company just like any other day. Wait, had he been acting so weirdly because of Valentine’s Day? The breakfast would suggest so, but why hadn’t he said something? And anyway, you were not supposed to celebrate anything, you had agreed on it! Had something changed? Not that you would complain about the breakfast, not at all, it was delicious and sweet from Joe. Just right now, you were not sure whether you were supposed to do something as well.
The morning in the office was quite uneventful, since nobody seemed to do their work, although your boss strode into the open-plan office a few times, glared at all the workers sharply and returned to her personal office. After that, the chatter turned into a murmur of hushed voices, but a few minutes later, everyone forgot about that silent reprimand and kept talking about the dates and the presents they had bought for their loved ones. People chatted, your friend called your name a few times to show you a funny picture that she had found online, since she sensed your pensive mood and tried to cheer you up. You returned the favour every time the work became extremely dull and you needed a break. But today, you were not enjoying these little moments with your best friend as much as usual. You kept thinking about Joe and his plans for the evening. Maybe you could pop into Forbidden Planet and buy him a sweatshirt (and probably one for yourself as well while you were at it).
When it was time for a lunch break you dived into your bag and scrabbled around, but no lunchbox was there. Shoot. You must have left it at home, probably when the weird incident at the kitchen counter happened. God, why had he patted your shoulder? And you were looking forward to the pasta that you had made the day before. Crap, now your mood was even worse. Although… maybe you could dash back home, your flat was not that far, eat the lunch and talk to Joe. There was no need to fret over everything till five, when you could deal with it now. It was not as if something big would happen here anyway.
You gathered your things and knocked on Tina’s desk. “If someone was looking for me, just tell them I have something I need to take care of and will be back any moment. And call me, so I can rush back here, okay?” you said and blew an air kiss in her direction. “See you, sweetie!” You ran to the door, quickly called “Happy Valentine’s Day” over your shoulder and disappeared in the lift.
On your way home, you pondered the things you wanted to say to Joe. The last year and a half had been the happiest time of your life and you were immensely grateful that you could spend it with him by your side. You shared all the ups and downs, always supporting each other and providing a shoulder to cry on if needed. And if he had decided that it was not a bad idea to celebrate your love on this very arbitrary day, you would actually have nothing against it. You wanted to make clear that you were not prepared for any grand gestures though, maybe a nice dinner out, or you could go to the cinema, but nothing posh and expensive. You also intended to pester him for behaving so oddly in the morning and playing Mr. Mysterious Guy when he could come clean and just tell you what was happening.
Rummaging in your bag for keys, you let out a tiny squeal of victory when your fingers touched the cold metal. You opened the door and immediately gasped and stopped in your tracks, not believing your eyes.
The floor of the hallway was covered in dark red rose petals. They were everywhere, just gently lying there, a few of them rising above the floor due to a little whiff of air caused by your opening the door. The petal trail disappeared behind the corner where the hallway turned left to your bedroom. You followed the trail, your eyes filling with tears. You were touched and couldn’t help yourself. But when you turned the corner, the trail stopped in the middle of the hallway, and at its very end there was a bouquet of roses unceremoniously dumped on the floor. That was when you heard the string of profanities coming from the bathroom. “Shit, fuck, fuck, oh, for God’s sake, fuck,” with the last vowel much longer than the preceding ones.
You dashed to the bathroom and flung the door open, frightened that something awful had happened. Joe, still in his pyjamas, was sitting at the edge of the bath, his legs slung over and one of his foot held in his hands as he inspected it closely, curse words leaving his lips. “Joe?” you breathed out, “Are you alright?” You crossed the room in an instant and kneeled right next to him, attempting to get a glimpse of what he was intently looking at.
“No, I’m not. I’m an idiot and now I’m going to die,” he deadpanned and shook his head. “Why such things happen to the best of us?”
“What is it, what happened?” Your voice was getting higher and more urgent, as you were still freaking out a bit.
“I dropped one of the roses and I fucking stepped on it and now I’m bleeding!” he exclaimed and tossed his arms around himself as if asking the world for another blow.
You could finally see his foot and started laughing. There was a small wound on the sole of his foot with a few droplets of blood around it, but that was all.
“This is not funny, I’ve lost great amounts of blood and now I may die!!” he screamed dramatically which only resulted in another burst of laughter on your side. You could tell he wasn’t serious as the corners of his lips betrayed him, slowly turning up. “Stop it!” he said, the smile in his voice evident now as he watched you clutch your stomach, still shaking with laughter. “You know, as my girlfriend, you could show a bit of sympathy for your old man.”
“Ohhh,” you cooed and raised your hand to play with his hair. “Sorry, babe. Should I take care of you and treat your deadly wound?”
Joe paid no attention to your mocking and answered with a smile, “Yes, please, that would be lovely.”
You just chuckled and shook your head and moved to the mirror cabinet, opening it in a search of a plaster. You moved a few bottles of pills, but eventually found what you were looking for. What captured your eyes though was something different and you smiled mischievously. You grabbed the can and returned to Joe.
“I must clean it first,” you said with all the seriousness you could gather when a flash of horror crossed Joe’s eyes.
“It’s not that bad,” he said and instinctively moved farther away from the disinfectant in your hand.
Although it was fun to ‘torture’ him like that, you knew that it actually should be done, all jokes aside. “Come on, Joe, we don’t know what kind of chemicals the roses could have been sprayed with.”
He nodded his head in defeat, straightened his back, allowing you to get to his foot, and scrunched up his face in preparation of what was to come. You gently grasped his foot and pointed the spray can in the right direction. Joe screamed and you jumped, almost dropping the disinfectant down on his foot. “Damn it, Joe, I haven’t started yet!”
“Sorry, sorry! Just a reflex. I’ll be good, I promise,” he said sincerely and squeezed his eyes shut.
You gave him one last look, which was a mixture of disbelief and amusement, and pressed down the pump. You could see him jerk a bit while biting down on his bottom lip.
“All good,” you announced after a little while as you cleaned the wound, put a plaster on it and gently ran your fingers over it to get rid of some unwanted wrinkles, making sure that the plaster would not come unstuck and fall down.
“Will you kiss it better?” He made puppy eyes and hopefully looked at you.
“I’m not kissing your foot, Mazzello!” you exclaimed, and he pouted. Instead, you pulled his head to you and placed a small kiss on the tip of his nose. “Better?”
“In a minute,” he answered and pressed his lips to yours, kissing you until you were both breathless. He then rested his forehead against yours and took a deep breath. “Happy Valentine’s Day?”
“About that,” you warily started. “Are you going to tell me what had gotten into you? I mean, I appreciate it – the breakfast and flowers, but I thought we didn’t celebrate Valentine’s Day.”
He clicked his tongue and put his legs over the bath to stand up. “Yeah, I thought so, too. But I don’t know, I was thinking about it all the time, and well, I just wanted to make you happy, I guess, ‘cause celebrating Valentine’s Day? With you, it just feels right, you know?”
You were silent for a while, taking it all in. “But why keeping it a secret and not telling me something? And you were being so weird in the morning.” You remembered the awkwardness and had to ask. “Love, you patted my shoulder. Why did you pat my shoulder?”
“You noticed, huh?” Joe sheepishly smiled at you and headed to your bedroom. As he put his whole weight on the injured foot, he let out a quiet “fuck.” You followed him, watching him hobble cautiously around the flowers that were still lying on the hallway floor. “You know, I had this plan,” he finally said and sat down on the bed while you leaned against the doorframe. “A lovely meal, good company – that would be me,” he pointed at himself with his thumbs, “then letting you go to work and prepare everything. Flowers, rom-coms for the evening, your favourite food – which reminds I still haven’t called the restaurant, remind me to do it, please – romantic music, I even bought you Funko Pop Princess Leia! And yeah, I also bought Han for me, but that’s not important.” You let him ramble on, a small smile gradually spreading across your face. “I wanted to be attentive, but also a gentleman. But all I could think of was you and how I would like to show you how much I love you right there, probably on that kitchen counter, even though I still didn’t know where to buy all the things and not much time was left. If I kissed you, I would totally lose it. So yeah, I patted your shoulder. Trust me, even I was surprised,” he huffed and tried to carefully lie down. “I couldn’t concentrate! And you weren’t helping either, you know,” he added matter-of-factly.
“Oh, I wasn’t?” You raised your eyebrow and smirked.
“Nope, you little minx,” he gave you a cheeky smile. “Parading around in that bathrobe of yours. Do you realise that it’s sinfully short? How am I supposed to concentrate on anything?!” You pulled yourself up from the doorframe and moved to close the distance between you. The bed dipped a bit as you sat down right next to him and pushed his hair from his face. He smiled at you, but suddenly gave you a look of confusion.
“Wait, aren’t you supposed to be at work? What are you even doing here, young lady?”
You laughed at his attempt to mimic your mother and explained the whole situation happening in work and the fact that you had forgotten your lunch. “And don’t try to change the subject, I can see right through you!” you grinned at him. You tried to lighten up the mood, but you knew there was something you needed to say.
“Thank you, Joe, for all of this. I know it probably didn’t go the way you had planned, but I appreciate it, I truly do. And,” you took a deep breath and closed your eyes, “I can’t imagine my life without you.” You waited for his answer, but he was silent. You opened your eyes and saw that his eyes were a bit glossier than usual. He raised your hand to his lips and placed a most delicate kiss on the back of your hand.
You cleared your throat. “I still have some time before I need to head back to work. If they need me, they’ll give me a call. You hungry?” you asked, already standing up, when Joe grabbed your wrist.
“Yes, I am. Very,” he said and pulled you to him. His kisses were gentle at first, full of love and affection that he held for you. Soon enough though, he deepened them and dragged you down to fully lie on the bed next to him. He moved on top of you but the moment he did so, he hissed and loudly exclaimed, “Fuck, my foot, damn it.”
He screwed up his face in pain, rolled back on his side and clutched his foot, almost throwing you down of the bed in the process.
“Stop, stop, honey,” you said and made him let go of his foot, calming him down by placing your hand on his chest, feeling his heart beating. “Let me take care of you,” you whispered and gently pushed him to lie on his back as you leaned over him.
“God, I love you so much.” He caressed your cheeks and kissed you slowly.
“I love you, too, Joe,” you said when you stopped to take a breath and you wholeheartedly smiled. "Happy Valentine’s Day.”
