The Song Book of Juana I of Castile
This lovely Burgundian chansonnier, one of the smallest complete collections of the time, consists of 56 pages of polyphonic music with Latin, French and Flemish texts by leading Netherlandish composers; among them being, Josquin des Prés, Johannes Ockeghem, Alexander Agricola, and Pierre de la Rue. In terms of content, the songs deal with various themes like love, jealousy, need of money, but also biblical stories and the Passion of Christ.
Thus scholars have concluded that this book was commissioned by Queen Juana. She gave the contract of this small book to a Flemish book painter. This miniaturist from Bruges was no less than Alexander Bening, the father of the great Simon Bening. In the year 1511, the treasure was brought to completion. It contains 56 miniatures that are right or left of the songs. They consist from artful and realistic leave-work with fruits, flowers, insects, and figurative scenes with respect to the content of the songs. Alongside, wonderful and ascetically pleasing initials adorn the pages.
Even the original received binding of the manuscript is impressive. It was finished by the Bruges-based book binder, Louis Bloc, and it shows in leather stamps a frame with surrounding inscriptions, ornamental leaflets, and medallions with animal figures. As a complete work, it offers both music and painting. The impressive Song Book of Juana of Castile is an insightful look into the music of the early 16th century and a treasure piece for any enthusiastic of illuminated manuscripts. (x)

Udine, i dipinti appartenuti a Filippo Brunner a Casa Cavazzini
Tumblr media
Udine, i dipinti appartenuti a Filippo Brunner a Casa Cavazzini.

Today in Christian History
Tumblr media
Today is Sunday, September 22nd, the 265th day of 2019. There are 100 days left in the year.
Today’s Highlight in History:
286: (traditional date) Emperor Maximian allegedly puts members of the Theban Legion to the sword when they refuse to renounce their faith.
1566: Death of Johann Agricola, a reformer often at odds with Luther and Melanchthon, especially over the role of the law in Christian times.
1734: One hundred and eighty Schwenkfelders arrive in Philadephia. Two days later they hold a thanksgiving service in gratitude for their safe passage to the new world.
1845: Baptism of Appaji Bapuji Yarde on a Monday morning. A Brahmin convert from Hinduism, he will become a notable missionary, translator, author, pastor, and church organization leader.
1853: Charles Carter arrives in Ceylon as a missionary for the Baptist Missionary Society. He will make such rapid progress in language study that he will be able to preach in Sinhalese in just a few months.
1861: Adams Gertner, founder of the Baptist movement in Latvia, performs his first baptism through faith (i.e.: adult baptism) in Latvia, immersing seventy-two converts in the Ziros river.
1871: Death of Charlotte Elliott, English devotional writer and author of the poignant hymn, “Just As I Am.”
1924: Death of Huang Naishang, who had labored as a pastor, Bible translator, YMCA director, newspaper editor, reformer, educator, and advisor to various governments. As he lies dying, he asks his wife to hold up a picture of Christ for him to see and then to place it on his chest.
1942: Death of Ralph Adams Cram, a fervent Anglo-Catholic who had been prominent in ecclesiastical architecture, applying revived English Gothic architectural style to churches in the United States.
2000: A quarter of a million Christians clog the streets of Hyderabad, India, to pay their final respects to evangelist Bakht Singh who is being buried. Inching along the funeral route, they hold aloft Bibles and Scripture banners, singing and praising God.
