Finally got to see The Defeat of the Floating Batteries at Gibraltar by John Singleton-Copley. It depicts a definitive moment of the great siege of Gibraltar, fought during the American Revolution. It was evacuated from London during the Blitz - just three weeks later the place where it was located, the Guildhall, burned down. It’s also absolutely huge - when the Guildhall was rebuilt it had to be built around it.

Tiny Review: Monkey Man 2024. John Wick versus Narendra Modi.
Tumblr media
"I think the action genre has sometimes been abused by the system. I wanted to give it real soul, real trauma, real pain ... And I wanted to infuse it with a little bit of culture." - Dev Patel, actor, writer, director, and producer of Monkey Man.
I think this twist on the action revenge genre, away from the brainless simplicity of the John Wick era, will take getting used to.
Third gender. Systematic oppression. Charismatic leaders. Do action fans really want their action layered between such heavy themes?

Monkey Man (2024)
An anonymous young man unleashes a campaign of vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless.
This is a fantastic, original, and action-packed debut by Dev Patel, the newly minted director. Some parts of it, which included the flashback scenes, dragged on and felt a little repetitive, but overall this is a very good movie which felt original and set in an Indian city. So, the new location and different scenery, plus the very good soundtrack as well as the fight scenes, made for an exciting movie experience.
Until now, I had not seen Dev Patel as an action hero, but he really was excellent in it. Also, I liked that it had a bit of story rather than just mindless fight scenes.
I look forward to watching what Dev Patel does next. Kudos to him for coming up with an original story. Fans of 'John Wick' may enjoy this too.
