Hong Kong sculptor, Johnson Cheung-shing TSANG

Open mind
Johnson Cheung-shing TSANG is a Hong Kong sculptor specializing in ceramics, stainless steel sculpture and public art work. Tsang’s works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imaginationg, integrating the two eelements, ‘human beings’ and ‘objects’, into creative themes. Since 1993, Tsang’s work have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Spain and Switzerland and collected by local and overseas museums and collectors. He has won many artistic achievements and public art awards over the years.
I have decided on looking further into his work because I found these somewhat comically contored claay sculptures kind of funny. They show often a range of emotions of a person. They are clasically beautiful and focuse on the theatrics of emotion. The series of these sculptures is titled ‘Lucid Dreams’ and it explores the range of emotions a human can be subjected to, and by amplifying its effect through the contortion of muscles and the abstract elements emerging from it- the artist brings life to emotions and instead of assigning an identity to the sculpture he offers it to the emotions that make us who we are. Throughts are projected into our facial features, and take a life of their own as the face splits into two when in an internal turmoil, and a tower perches on our head to signify the barrier we have formed between the world and us. This unique perspective creates a visual composition of a mental landscape of a human as they conflict and conform with their inner personalities. As we observe each piece, a realization dawns that each of Tsang’s sculpture is a reflection of the inner war we always fight and the elastic, malleable nature of the human persona.

Under the skin
I figured while looking at his work as well that I could use some of the expressions as references for animation or ideas while animating my frames. A person’s face can be very expressive but some of these are over the board and are also very surreal which makes them look so fascinating. Only similiar reference that I could achieve is having a child do faces for me, since a child won’t be embarassed about doing any funny or embarassing faces and nothing will hold them back. Keeping that in mind simplifying these emotions and faces would be very useful for me to get used to observing as for animation they would be a key aspect of showing and expressing any feelings or emotions.

Uma incrível escultura do artista, Johnson Cheung-Shing Tsang. Suas obras são feitas em metal e cerâmica mas trazem um brilho especial aos fazer nossos olhos enxergarem como se fossem um líquido esculpido! Yuanyang II - Johnson Tsang Cheung Shing, 2002. (Hong Kong Museum of Art) Material: Stoneware, porcelain, hollowing, modelling, slabbing and throwing
Some people called this work Coffee Kiss (咖啡之吻).  “Yuanyang" is a species of water birds literally known as mandarin duck. Since “Yuanyang" always appear in pairs, it is adopted as a symbol of conjugal love in Chinese.
“With Hong Kong’s historical background, local culture embraces Chinese traditions as well as impacts from the West. In fact, inclusion has long been the major characteristic of local culture. Yet, Hong Kong people are no copycats. We infuse the external impacts with our own creativities. Yuanyang, a local drink which mixes milk tea and coffee, reflects Hong Kong’s unique fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.” Johnson Tsang

Systematic Functional Annotation of Somatic Mutations in Cancer
Publication date: 12 March 2018 Source:Cancer Cell, Volume 33, Issue 3 Author(s): Patrick Kwok-Shing Ng, Jun Li, Kang Jin Jeong, Shan Shao, Hu Chen, Yiu Huen Tsang, Sohini Sengupta, Zixing Wang, Venkata Hemanjani Bhavana, Richard Tran, Stephanie Soewito, Darlan Conterno Minussi, Daniela Moreno, Kathleen Kong, Turgut Dogruluk, Hengyu Lu, Jianjiong Gao, Collin Tokheim, Daniel Cui Zhou, Amber M. Vellano, Nikolaus Schultz, Rachel Karchin, Li Ding, Yiling Lu, Lydia Wai Ting Cheung, Ken Chen, Kenna R. Shaw, Funda Meric-Bernstam, Kenneth L. Scott, Song Yi, Nidhi Sahni, Han Liang, Gordon B. Mills The functional impact of the vast majority of cancer somatic mutations remains unknown, representing a critical knowledge gap for implementing precision oncology. Here, we report the development of a moderate-throughput functional genomic platform consisting of efficient mutant generation, sensitive viability assays using two growth factor-dependent cell models, and functional proteomic profiling of signaling effects for select aberrations. We apply the platform to annotate >1,000 genomic aberrations, including gene amplifications, point mutations, indels, and gene fusions, potentially doubling the number of driver mutations characterized in clinically actionable genes. Further, the platform is sufficiently sensitive to identify weak drivers. Our data are accessible through a user-friendly, public data portal. Our study will facilitate biomarker discovery, prediction algorithm improvement, and drug development.
