I’ve seen people, especially on tiktok of course saying she sounds bad. It doesn’t fit right with me because shiver is singing Enka (for those who don’t know it is a type of genre from Japan which you can compare to blues with traditional Japanese folk music). Like, imagine if someone decided to make fun of jojking or Mongolian throat singing. Before you’re critical of something, especially something artistic, maybe make sure you aren’t making of something that’s clearly cultural

So I watched the 1980-eurovision song contest yesterday (because one of my favorite Eurovision youtubers hosted a watch-a-long) and since I have very little concept of which songs competed in which year I was just gobsmacked by the amount of Iconicness:

After a slow start, we get at spot 4, Luxembourg with Le Papa Pingouin! Super silly song, with a man dressed up as a penguin. So stupid! It’s wonderful!

Then afterwards, we get, not a silly song, but the One And Only song of Morocco. Featured in an avalanche of people’s “Best Song Of Every Country List”! Also making Morocco very easy to summarise:

Then we get Italy, which I had never heard before, but which had the very interesting choice of falsetto in the chorus.

Then we had some regular song. The Swedish song is very popular in Sweden, but then again so are like 90% of our Eurovision entries.

After which, we get an iconic Finnish last-placer, which like all iconic Finnish last-placer did not deserve last place. Vesa-Matti Loiri’s flute deserves to be more iconic than Alexander Rybak’s violin.

And right after, we have the first, the original, the should be most iconic jojk guy! Randomly popping in after half the song! I just disrespected Norway a little above, but here again Norway gets my full respect.

And - of course - right after - in a magnificent trio all following each other, we have Germany with the magnificent THEATER. It scares me. I love it.

And as we approached the end of songs, I found myself wondering, hey? Which song won this year? So many iconic songs, none of which have won?

AND FOR IRELAND, IN COMES JOHNNY LOGAN WITH A STEEL CHAIR! Mr Eurovision himself!

I mean. He’s an icon. What can I say. He’s the only male singer allowed to sing a ballad and win. Twice.

And then we have Spain, only to then close off with. The. Iconic. Literal Euro-Vision Song. EURO-VISION! Belgium! Telex! The best!

TL,DR: 1980 Eurovision is iconic and you should all watch it.
