Carretera Cerrada

Una mañana fresca del 1 de enero de 2018, emprendimos camino de regreso a casa. Nos encontrábamos en San Francisco, originalmente cabe mencionar era un road trip en el que me aventuraría conmigo misma, sin embargo al platicarle a un amigo de lo que pensaba hacer, me dijo si se podía anexar, a lo cual accedí.

No esta mal compartir gastos ¿No creen?

Entonces iniciamos ese regreso de aproximadamente 10 horas, en el cual pasamos por algunos lugares iconos de esta ciudad.

Golden Gate Bridge - Baterry Spencer

Lombard Street, San Francisco, CA

Twin Peaks, San Francisco, CA

Después de dar un pequeño tour por la ciudad de San Francisco, tomamos ruta hacia Mexicali, la idea fue ir por toda la costa, pasando por Monterey, CA hasta San Luis Obispo, una vez ahí dejar la costa y tomar la I-5.

Llevábamos 2 horas en el camino San Francisco - Monterey, CA

Pero de lo que nunca nos percatamos, fue que un tramo de la carretera estaba cerrada por que estaba en reparación. Solo pudimos llegar a un poblado llamado Gorda, CA. para eso ya teníamos 2 horas más en el camino pasaban de las 6pm, necesitábamos gasolina y comida.

Gasolina al doble del precio

Sin batería los celulares

Nos bajamos para ver que pasaba, no fuimos los únicos atrapados en medio de la nada prácticamente, entonces el señor de la gasolinera quien estaba a punto de cerrar nos mencionó dos opciones:

Pasar por un camino de terracería en medio de la montaña (1:30 hrs)

Regresar a Monterey (2 hrs)

Para eso en la estación de gas, cargamos un poco los celulares y una batería extra, en lo que se cargaban, platicamos con algunos de los que llegaban para ver que opción tomaríamos, entonces nos encontramos unos paisanos quienes también regresaban a Mexicali.

Platicando con ellos llegamos al acuerdo de ir en caravana por en medio de la montaña, ellos venían en una camioneta, la señora manejando con dos hijas y un amigo-novio. Ni ella sabia como llamarlo, ya que me platicó que se sentía muy grande como para presentarlo como novio y pues tampoco estaban casados como para decirle marido, en fin.

Nuestros celulares cargaron poco, entonces le pedimos de favor si podía cargar nuestra batería extra en su camioneta, a lo cual accedió,

Como todos unos aventureros nos lanzamos por terracería

Como muchas caravanas, no fue caravana. No le alcanzamos el paso a la señora, tiene el pie pesado, ni el polvo le vimos. Empezamos muy bien terracería de un solo camino, con tramos pegados al barranco y zona con bastantes curvas (recordemos que pasaban las 7pm). Todo seguía bien hasta que nos percatamos que también venían autos de regreso, entonces bajamos la velocidad y empezamos a tener cuidado, ya que la única luz era la del carro y la luna, hasta parecía cita romántica excepto porque estábamos en medio de la nada.

Rezando para que no nos tronara una llanta, porque no se apareciera un loco con una sierra, Jeepers Creepers ó un tanque militar.

Si un tanque militar porque nos comentaron que tomando la carretera nacimiento pasaríamos por un cuartel militar, y pues que si, pasamos por Fort Hunter Liggett, que siguiéramos el camino pasando por Jolon y Lockwood hasta llegar a la 101 que nos llevaría casi directo a casa.

Fue hora y media que ni ganas de platicar nos dieron, no logramos tomar fotos, porque para empezar ni nos acordamos, con todo lo que estaba pasando, hasta el hambre se nos quitó, finalmente logramos llegar a la 101 y en la carretera nos encontramos con la señora y nos detuvimos en un descanso.

Platicamos un poco acerca del camino, lo peligroso y que ella prefirió pisarle para salir lo mas pronto posible de ahí, por la seguridad de sus hijas, eso fue lo que nos comentó. Nos entregó la batería (La idea de la señora era no esperarnos y hacerme llegar la batería a la oficina donde trabajo, ya que en la platica salió el tema que conoce a la que era socia de una marca conocida de uniformes. Si, Mexicali es un rancho, ha California también, recordemos que allá nos encontramos) y nos dijo que se detuvo en el camino porque sus hijas le dijeron que nos esperara, ya que escucharon cuando comentamos que teníamos poca batería. Casi lloro al escuchar eso, una vez mas la vida demostrando que hay personas muy buenas allá afuera, angelitos que nos ayudan en el camino.

Por eso hoy te digo, no es tratarte como me trates, es tratar a las personas como nos gustaría que nos trataran independientemente de las bofetadas que podamos recibir, ya que el día de mañana cosecharemos lo sembrado.

Finalmente después de un largo camino y sin mas terracería llegamos sanos y salvos a casa.

Day 8 continued

Obviously all the physical struggle brought up emotional struggle most of the day, it's really wild how our systems work like that. It wasn't all dark though, I did photograph lots of road kill, beautiful rolling hill, big sky, scenic overlooks and animals. I think I finally got a good shot of these majestic brown hawks I keep seeing out here. I'm about 30 miles inland and the weather changes completely, hence the temperature variance yesterday of 57 to 100 degrees. I rode from PCH out 46 for 26 miles to Paso Robles where I had lunch at Joe's place, a very patriotic local staple there. Then rode through town and headed out toward the lake on Nacemiento Lake Dr. I ended up riding over a road that is the top of the damn which created that lake, there was a 30 foot hill lake side covered in boulders but it wasn't enough to deter me from climbing down, stripping down and take a dip to cool off and refresh. I could have used that dip several more times in the day, at that point putting my clothes back on and preparing to ride I could have had no idea what the next 50 miles had in store or how far I would be pushing myself to get through it. I rode on, climbing hill after hill as the temperature also climbed and took a toll on my body and hydration. I had as much water as I ever do, 64 oz, but I was twice as thirsty. Nacimiento Dr turned into Godfrey Rd and ran 20 miles, then Interlake Rd was 20 miles and took me past Lake San Antonio. It finally took me into Lockwood, population 279, where I was told there was a store. That is exactly all there was. knowing that it was ahead is all that kept me going and I couldn't think of anything past it, all I could focus on was getting cold gatorade in my body and replenishing the salts I was loosing. This is when I realized I was hallucinating the car sounds from behind over and over and that I seriously needed to stop. When I got off the bike I was so dazed and weary that I knew I was in trouble. This is a point in my life I will always remember with amazement. The body is so incredible and simple really, as a machine, there is a formula of how it runs and what's required. My mind was so stuck in the experience of the now, and the distraught and defeated emotions, that it couldn't fathom that I would come around and be ok to ride again. While my body was resting, rehydrating, and preparing to finish what my subconscious knew it had to do, because it set out to do it, my mind was only catching up. About 45 minutes later I realized I wasn't getting out of this and I had 24 miles left to go. That tiny oasis in the dessert flowing with gatorade sat at the intersection of Interlake and Jolon Rd, that was my last turn that would take me home all the way to King City and the Motel 6 I had booked to treat myself at the end of what I new would be a difficult day. The over sixty mile stretch from Paso Robles to King City was only on three roads, just over half of which had shoulders, around the lakes there was a lot of traffic from lake goers, campers and boats in tow, but afterward I would ride for miles and miles in the middle of the lane with no one passing in either direction. Lucky for me I had climbed so much already in the day that I was at a significant elevation so the last 25 miles didn't have any serious climbs, a couple gradual sections but I was able to keep a good pace for most of it. The fastest down hill, where I hit my max speed of 44 mph was on a beautiful stretch about two miles long. I remember when I was in Laguna a week ago and was going down hill I was nervous to approach 30 mph with all the gear on the bike but it hasn't taken long to get used to it. I believe the fastest I ever went on my bike before, without gear, was only 45 so I'm pretty stoked about my top speed yesterday, especially because I had to take some pretty burly turns at high speeds to keep up the momentum to hit that max. I love going to downhill! After the downhill high wore off I was counting down the last miles and hoping not to have to climb again before the finish line. It was a life saver to to get to talk with my parents on the phone for a while during that last stretch. It's becoming a thing for my mom to talk me through my last stretches some days, It really counts for a lot! Especially yesterday because there was no service for most of the day, I couldn't talk on the phone, listen to my books or podcasts or music. I never ride with nothing but my thoughts, it's usually to heavy and I have spent the last year and a half distracting myself away from my thoughts with whatever is pumping through my ear buds, usually NPR and audio books. I have learned a lot about many topics and I am proud of my education from this time, but at the same time I recognize in my grieving, healing and processing that I have essentially been pinching the hose and restricting the flow with these distractions. Days like yesterday are when the hose releases and all the pressure comes rushing through. I am grateful for yesterday. My legs are beyond soar/tired, my back is screaming, and my hands are so soar they are itching a lot.... really weird. Oh yeah, and one other thing, when you get off the coast of California it's basically Texas. More big trucks and good ol boys than liberal bumper stickers and hippies that's for sure!

Car Insurance - PLEASE READ!?

In 2004, I saw a car that I wanted to buy at a Nissan car dealership and I took out a loan. At the time I didn't know anything about insurance. It was all greek to me. I was very young and had no one to help me out. Anyway, I went to American Family Insurance and the agent seemed very nice. I told him that I wanted to buy this car and before I could finalize everything I had to show proof that I had full coverage on the vehicle. He told me that I most definitely had to get full coverage and I signed the paperwork, gave him a check and my insurance coverage started. I NEVER CHANGED MY COVERAGE!! (Let me make that clear). So 1.5 years later my car slid on the ice and another lady thought she could speed to get around me and she instead hit me. The officer stated that none of us were at fault because I was sliding when I should have been in control of my car and she should have never tried to pass me so we would each be responsible for our own damage. Right away I called my agent and he later called me back and stated I didn't have collision coverage and I would have to pay out of pocket for my damage. Again, I didn't know anything about insurance and I had totally forgotten that collision was required so I believed this guy. I left it at that but was very upset with him because he stated that I didn't have collision coverage and I told him that as a professional insurance agent, he should have told me that I needed full coverage on this practically new car!!! So, 6 months later, it was still bothering me and I left him. The car wasn't drive-able (I had to pay $600 just to fix something with the wheel mount) and then it was drive-able but there are dents in the car and damage that equals $2,000 to fix. That may sound cheap to some of you but it isn't to me. Just 3 days ago, I was telling this story to someone and they told me that I should have had full coverage on the vehicle and I should look into this. I called American Family and a lady is doing some investigating because she could see I had insurance on my car in 2004 but didn't know what kind. But, she confirmed that my car was under a lien and the insurance agent would be required to put me on a full coverage in the state of Wisconsin. So, this lady stated she would call me back on Saturday. In a perfect world, she could state either 1). You had collision coverage at that time and your car will be fixed at our expense or 2.) Your agent never put you on full coverage. Come Saturday, what if she says that it turns out my agent never put me on full coverage? Isnt he at fault? Everyone (including their own company) states he should have known to put me on full coverage! So, can I try suing the company? Im thinking even though the lady was really nice and told me that my insurance agent should have known better that Ill hear something from them stating that their computer system shows that I was a client in 2004, but they dont know what type of coverage I was on.
