Here it is! My spur-of-the-moment thing! I finally got to play Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, and I loved it! :') I loved it so much it inspired me to draw this!
I've been revisiting Cuphead and Bendy and the Ink Machine while making this and was reminded just how incredible and beautiful they are! Sometimes we forget that these big IPs were once these little ideas that people gave their all to make a reality. Very impressive! And very inspiring.
Also, I had no idea who Felix was when I drew this. I thought he was just one of the guys! Turns out: he's the grandfather of animated characters, if you wouldn't believe! I'm so glad I was able to finally do him justice! (I had so much trouble drawing him for some reason.

Word count: 3.1k
Feedback, as always, is appreciated! 🤗
Tumblr media
You knew what you signed up for.
You knew from the beginning when you signed your contract with JYP Entertainment and agreed to co-produce the three upcoming albums of Stray Kids. It was a big leap in your career, going from your home studio to a big corporation with the best equipment on the market, a team of ten people behind you, assisting with any of your needs, and 3RACHA, the creative masterminds behind most of SKZ's biggest hits spewing ideas, humming new beats left and right. Truly a dream come true for an underground producer like you. However, nothing could prepare you for what was to come.
Bang Chan walked into your life like any other person you've encountered, there were no fireworks, no sparkly eyes, no instant connection similar to the ways such scenarios are depicted in romance movies. He barged into the meeting room with tired eyes, comfy clothes, and a laptop in hand, knots of cables everywhere, pen drives and hard drives sticking out from every possible outlet, proof of the importance of the device now placed gently on the table surrounded by executives, managers and the newbie, aka you. An uncontrollable chuckle left your lips. You knew the setup all too well, a very similar junction of cables and outsourced storage sitting in front of you.
Brown eyes fell on you upon hearing the sound of your amused giggles, and then they traveled to the table and back to you, his plump lips curling into a kind smile, one that felt genuine and warm, even inviting per se.
"Hi, I'm Chris. It's very nice to meet you, I'm a huge fan," he says, offering his hand for you to shake. Your eyes widen, but you act on instinct, standing up and shaking his hand, returning the polite meeting. It was surprising to hear someone like him being familiar with your work. You've gotten lucky in the past couple of months and you were credited for producing some big hits for both Korean and international artists, but you still had a long way to go, you didn't even consider yourself known around your area, nonetheless by big corporations like JYPE or idols like Bang Chan. "I am looking forward to working with you. I listened to all of the samples you sent us, they are amazing." he gushes and you can't help but feel flustered. He is a smooth talker for sure, but he seems genuine and honest, not the type of person to compliment others just to come off as nice or friendly. You like that about him, even on your first meeting.
The meeting goes smoothly, it's mostly you and Chan talking, spewing ideas left and right about the sound and feel of the new album, the managers and staff present only intervene to settle some deadlines and key points that should be met by the upcoming project. As soon as the formal meeting is concluded, Chan takes you to their studio to show you around, after all, it's going to become your workplace for a while. You meet Changbin and Han there, the former being more polite and a little less talkative, the latter spewing jokes and bouncing around in excitement like a Duracell bunny. They let you take a seat and play around with the equipment in the studio, trying to get familiar with it in a short time, which doesn't prove to be too difficult with the help of the three boys.
The following weeks you are basically living in the studio space, working on perfecting samples, adding and removing elements, Stray Kids walking in and out to record adlibs and verses, Han and Changbin bombarding your phone with audio snippets and singing guides, you sending them nearly finished instrumentals, they come in for a few hours to add or change up things, but they never stay too long. The only one that's constantly there is Chris. As time passes, you get to know him more and more, he's slowly opening up to you, telling you stories from his trainee days, about his time with the kids, his family, and his beloved pet Berry. You quickly find out that the best conversations happen after a long day being cooped up in a small recording studio with dim lighting and over half-empty takeout containers. It's not hard to fall for Bang Chan. He's caring, attentive, funny, and genuine. His creative process is fascinating, his devotion to his work and the group he crafted and curated at merely 20 years old is respectable, something you've never seen in the people you've had the fortune to work with before. However, he's also unapproachable, somewhat closed off, and unaccepting of any kind of help. He often brings himself down, scrapping or deleting entire songs he worked on for days without a second thought, ones you were sure would become hits. After months of working together and spending most of your days with each other, he finally cracks, he opens up. He tells you about his trainee days, how he witnessed people coming into his life just to walk out the same way, him always being the one that's left behind. How that period in his youth scarred him for life. But he continues on with a smile, reminiscing how he met his bandmates, his current best friends, his brothers, and how he hoped they could stay. He explains how he had JYPE name their fanbase STAY hoping that the support they provide would remain with them forever so that he'll never feel alone again.
And to his surprise, your reaction is a huge smile. No pity, no empty promises that you'll stay and you'll be available for him anytime like others do when he talks about his deepest fears. "It wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't this hard, Chris, after all, there wouldn't be starlight if it didn't get dark, would it?" you say with a reassuring pat on his shoulder and for a lyricist like Chan, your words hit hard. He finds himself reciting them whenever he's feeling down or he gets overwhelmed. That makes him realize how deeply in love he is with you.
Your love blossoms along with the sakura. It's one beautiful spring day when Chan feels particularly drenched, exhausted, and sleep-deprived, but he finds the strength within himself to walk to the studio after a full day of dance rehearsal, his body aching and his mind fuzzy, but he is determined to see you. You're hunched up on the sofa, the only source of light coming from the screen of your computer, the sight causing a faint smile to appear on his lips. Your eyes light up upon seeing him enter, but they falter as soon as they land on his exhausted face.
"Why are you here Chan?! It's late and you're exhausted, just go home and rest, you definitely need it." you say, concern overtaking your previously calm and collected aura and you don't hesitate to throw your laptop on the couch, standing up to try and turn him around, sending him home by force. He just chuckles, there's an evident power difference between you two and he doesn't even move an inch despite your best effort. You don't quite catch it in the dim lighting of the studio, but his eyes sparkle with a kind of adoration that only shows for the most important people in his life, ones he keeps close to his heart. How could you not be one of them? He's never met someone so selfless as you, who prioritizes others' comfort and well-being over theirs without a second thought. Everything about you screams comfort and familiarity to Chris, there are no expectations, high standards, or crazy idol bullshit. Around you, he's the kid with big dreams who loves music, hanging around with his friends, goofing around the studio, and that lifts an enormous weight off his shoulders. The way you look out for him and ensure he stays hydrated, well-fed, and well-rested reminds him of the warmest of love. People tend to forget about his needs, he's the one to usually tend to others, and he always seems cool and collected, hence why his well-being is often overlooked. But never by you.
Up until this moment, he held back. He didn't make a move, he tried to dismiss the feelings that crept up on him as autumn turned to winter and winter to spring. However, as nature blossomed and boomed in fresh color, he got the inspiration he desperately needed to allow himself to fall for once, to pass control over him into someone else's hands. He stands in front of you, the barely-there distance suddenly more annoying than ever, both your hands on his shoulders as you try to turn him around and kick him out of the studio that has his name on it, and he acts out of instinct. He places both his hands on your hips, pulling you close to his body with ease and a surprised yelp leaves your lips as you basically collapse with his muscular chest. You look up into his eyes and you observe the mischief, the smile lines that multiply in the corners of his almond-shaped orbs. As the shock from his sudden action disappears from your face your expression molds into one of calmness and adoration, he leans in closer, without breaking eye contact until the last second before your lips meet.
Everything seems to fall into place at that moment. It feels liberating like a lingering tension has disappeared and the world around you settled into calmness, stopping time, leaving the two alone in your own little capsule. Nothing could beat the feeling of a kiss like that, one you're yearning for over months, without even realizing it.
From that point on, everything goes easily. Chan asks you out on multiple dates, which are magical, every single one of them, and he asks you officially to be his girlfriend one night when you're sitting outside on his balcony with a bottle of wine talking about everything and nothing. You gladly say yes, because in your mind nothing can beat the feeling of being with someone as amazing as Chris. He makes every effort to spend every spare moment he has with you, which is not hard while you work in the same building. The first few months of your relationship go without any issues, because they're constantly in Seoul, working on their next comeback. He has a little bit more free time, with fewer schedules and more opportunities to spend hours on end in the studio or at home hanging out with you. You can't sugarcoat this honeymoon.
You learn fairly quickly that his perfectionist tendencies are present not only in his professional life but his personal one as well. Christopher Bahng is not just the perfect leader, the perfect idol, but the perfect boyfriend as well. He goes out of his way to protect you, both physically and mentally, he remembers all the small things you ever mentioned to him, he knows how you take your coffee or what makes you uncomfortable, he ensures to have an extra jacket or hoodie for you because you tend to be cold, he treats you like his number one priority. It's hard not to forget what really comes to him first though: his job.
As soon as the weather turns grey and cold again, and comeback season rolls around while the leaves turn brown and nature goes to sleep, the gap between the two of you grows wide, which was bound to happen over time. You start living your life in parallel: you're at the JYP building during the day, while they run around from one interview to another, and by the time you go home to sleep Chan shows up at the studio to work on tracks for future projects. You start having different natures, different nights, you'll have yours and he'll have his.
On top of that, they start their new world tour, so he's even less available than before, and all your plans start going to hell, for the first time since the beginning of your relationship, Chris is not there to tell you that it's all good. Until it's not. And you're lonely with your love.
You both know that it's neither of your faults. Things like this were bound to happen, both you and Chan are very sought-after people in your industry, of course, his job is more demanding, but that doesn't help your relationship at all. You feel somewhat like you've been played like this is not what you signed up for when you've got into a relationship with the love of your life. At one point you get so used to being without Chris that you start thinking your relationship was all a made-up fantasy created by your exhausted brain. But you know it was true, it was the realest relationship you've ever been in. But what remains of it now? Postponed date nights, regretful glances, and 5-minute phone calls filled with rushed apologies and empty promises.
Are you even happy anymore?
Of course, Chan feels it too, and he's scared. He doesn't want to lose you. There are so many unspoken words between the two of you, but his career is blooming and it's high time for him to take care of the kids as their careers have skyrocketed with their last few comebacks. And he loves to believe that the insane success they're having has everything to do with your involvement. Not just your work on the album, but your sheer presence. The support you offer him and all his bandmates. The warmth that you bring, the smiles that you cause. He's reminded of you in everything they do: you're there in every song they play, in every lyric he sings. He's also lonely with your love.
However, there's one thing that keeps him going, your words of reassurance from before: it wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't this hard, there wouldn't be starlight if it didn't get dark.
Rushed hugs, short pecks on your lips, those damned 5-minute conversations that feel so suffocating also sparkle with hope over his pitch-black sky. It gives him reassurance that one day, when his schedule frees up just a little bit, everything will go back to normal, how it used to be. It keeps him going. You're also extremely reassuring. You keep telling him, that this is temporary, that it will pass and that you're alright, and your relationship can survive.
That hope shatters when he sits with his bandmates in a car on the way to the airport. The radio is playing a song that he's never heard before, but he recognizes the voice instantly. He heard it many times when you recorded guides for the boys, when you sang in the shower at his apartment or directly to him when he couldn't sleep, your voice alone lulling him into dreamland.
He listens to the lyrics carefully and the first few lines of the melancholic song make his stomach tighten and he pales and all the hope he was holding onto desperately shatters with his heart:
The gap between us growing wide Was bound to happen over time We live our lives in parallel So I really hope this finds you well
"Wow, this song is amazing, who's singing it? The voice sounds so familiar." Han exclaims and he asks the driver to turn up the volume so that he can hear it better.
"Oh, yeah, it went viral on TikTok. Some new artist, she goes by a pseudonym and this is her only song." Felix explains and goes into detail about all the theories online about the true identity of the artist. Chan knows it's you though, and as the song rolls into the chorus, he feels like throwing up.
That it's all good until it's not And I'm lonely with our love It's not mine, it's not your fault That I'm lonely with our love It wouldn't be worth it if it wasn't this hard There wouldn't be starlight if it didn't get dark But it's all good until we're lonely with our love
As soon as they touched down in Seoul Chris rushed through the crowded airport, his heart pounding with urgency as he fought against the wave of doubt that had been building ever since he heard the song in the cab hours ago. He knew what he had to do—he couldn't let you slip away, he couldn't let the doubts and the loneliness eat away at you like it had been for weeks now. The distance between you two had grown not just in miles, but in words left unsaid, in moments ignored. The obligations of your lives, but mainly his had woven a web that seemed impossible to escape, but he was determined to repair what was broken.
By the time he reached your door, he was breathless, not just from the rush but from the weight of everything he was carrying ever since this distance crept up between you. You open the door with weary, swollen eyes, reddened by sleepless nights and harsh computer screens. You're shocked to see him there, at your door, exhausted, panicked, yet hopeful. Full of love and adoration. You were waiting for him to say something. Anything to reassure you. And in that moment, Chan knew—he had to reassure the both of you.
Taking your hand, he spoke softly, but with all the sincerity in his voice. "We’ve lost sight of each other, I know," he said, his words trembling, "but we’re not broken. This, what we have—it’s worth fighting for. I’m here, and I promise we can make it through this. Together. I promise you, it's gonna be worth it because it's this hard. After all, you're the starlight when my life gets dark. I love you. I want to do this with you, and I can't promise you that we will not be lonely with our love ever again, but it will always get better, I can guarantee that. We don't always have to live our lives in parallel. Not all our plans will go to hell. And I'm always gonna be here to tell you, that it's all good, even if it's not perfect all the time."
For a long moment, you looked at him, a mix of doubt and hope flickering in your eyes. The eyes that he found himself falling for many times before. But then, slowly, you let out a breath you didn’t know you'd been holding, and the walls that had built up between the two of you began to crumble. The road ahead was uncertain, but in that moment, you both understood: love, when nurtured and protected, could withstand even the hardest of times. You didn’t need all the answers, only each other.

Tumblr media
At some point this arrangement has to end. You know that. He knows it; moreover everyone who knows that you’ve been sleeping with Beomgyu says it. You’re also aware that you should be the one to end it; A friends of benefits situation hinted at by Beomgyu, leading to a proposition started by you.
He comes over more frequently, showers you in more affection, in addition to subconsciously doing little habits lovers would do. As the patterns start to weave with your everyday life, you start to wonder who gains the most out of this agreement. Of course, such matters shouldn’t be weighed, especially between friends. He gets his release out of a glorified, whiny, pussy mitten, and you get to take a sneak peak of what it would be like to be his.
It’s not like you’re gonna get more than that.
Naturally, this thought process circulates your mind a lot, its conclusion always left as a draft or with a conflicting thought. Listening to the pitter-patter against the glass pane, you reason with yourself while you send him a text and sink into the bed, thinking, “The aftercare is nice, plus things have gotten stressful lately.”
All the inward bickering with yourself never lasts, because in the end, a full five minutes pass before three’s knocking on the door. With a heavy mind and body, you drag yourself to the anterior of the studio to unlock it.
On the other end is a panting brunette, glasses skewed and hair disheveled. Beomgyu brings his hood down, leaves his keys on the shabby table up front, kicking his shoes off beside it. You step away from the door, with him trailing behind you meekly. No words are exchanged, contrast to the obnoxiously loud string of filth when the two of you hook up. Once you enter the bedroom, you immediately fall onto the bed, propping yourself up to the headboard. You study him expectantly, moving to your right and replacing your weight with his own. He scans the room, playing with the hem of your shirt. “You got new sheets.” He starts, voice soft and low while he rests into the junction between your neck and shoulder. “They’re really soft.” With a hum, you move to get on top of him, your legs entrapping him. Simultaneously, you set your weight down on him slowly, and he seals his eyes with a small jerk from his hips. “You really came over to talk about my sheets?” The brunette gives you a small smile, cocking his head to the side. “You seriously texted me just to do nothing?” The other returns, sitting up to meet your form.
He latches his lips onto your neck, trailing it upwards to kiss the sharp of your jaw. “You’re assuming.” you comment, biting down on the inners of your bottom lip to fend off sound. “We used to hang out all the time before we started fucking.” He stops his kisses to peer at you, his mouth covered in sheen. “You texted me saying, ‘Wanna do it?’ I don’t think I was that far off from what you were planning.” You nod your head, lifting the ends of his shirt, bringing his face back into your neck. In turn, he brings his arms up the small of your back, caressing it before detaching himself once again. “You don’t have a bra on.” He says, like it’s some sort of otherworldly fact. Raising an eyebrow, you respond, “Well yeah, it’s my apartment. Nobody’s home and my top’s frilly enough to hide everything.” He nods, planting a swift peck on your lips, he gives you a bright-eyed smile. “It suits you.”
You don’t know if he’s teasing, or if this is part of the foreplay. You recall wearing the exact same top half a decade ago to see a movie with Beomgyu alone, loose and brand new with a skirt that sat right above the upper quartile of your thigh. You told yourself that it would be the day you confessed to him, or tried to get him to do something in the theater. Instead, he giggled at you, smoothening the sides of your frayed braids, telling you that you dressed silly and clean. You weren’t sure what he was implying about you, but the red hue that had painted on your cheeks that stayed throughout the whole run-time of the movie was enough to get you to quit wearing that top outdoors out of embarrassment.
“What’s on your mind?” He asks, pushing the bunched up shirt around you, pulling it above your head. “Nothing” you mumble, yelping when he flips you, hovering above you as he begins to tug at the garter of your shorts. Lifting your ass, the other pulls at the fabric in one swoop. “Don’t get distracted and ignore me.” He pouts, hooking your underwear while the knuckle of his middle finger grazes over your core. “Couldn’t possibly forget,” you huff out, subtly lowering yourself onto his digit, “you’re too annoying—” Cutting yourself off with a gasp, his tongue replaces his finger, giving kitty licks over the cloth. “I’m so annoying I’ll have you screaming my name by the end of this.” He gloats in between breaths, left hand intertwined with yours as the right has its hold on the skin atop your pelvic bone, thumb rubbing circles and drawing patterns. You keep quiet, concentrating on suppressing your noises and grabbing the brunette’s hair. Pulling his face into you, he retracts, kissing the sides of your underwear. “Beomgyu, you hiss, yanking his head up to study him. “Don’t be a prick.” The brunette gives you another pout, slowly bringing the garment to level with your knees. “But you’re cute when you’re squirming,” he pauses, trailing kisses up to your belly button. “You're also hot when you’re mean.” With a scoff, you shove his head away, and he returns to face your heat. His tongue prods at your entrance; you curse, grinding yourself onto it. “You’re impatient today,” he remarks, rubbing the apple of his cheek against your lower abdomen. “Stop playing around,” You bite back, grasping onto his hair to keep him in place, “you’re not usually this taunting.” Beomgyu sneers, pressing his nose on your clit. “Taunting you? Can’t I just want my baby to feel good?”
The term of endearment causes you to jolt against him. He chuckles, vibrations shooting up your body, draping an arm over your eyes. “Does my baby like it when I call her that?” He asks, to which you nod unconsciously, body writhing as your whines get pitchier.
Beomgyu gets off on your praise, gets off on seeing just how much you need him. So it's obvious that his next course of action is to stop contact with you altogether, pulling himself back, smirk plastered on his face. “Say it.” He coos, frotting the fabric of his jeans over your bare cunt; the texture makes you writhe. “Say you like being called baby, and that you love it when I go down on you.” A sense of protecting your dignity washes over you. You turn away with your mouth shut as he moans over you. “Never.”
The other picks up speed, and you clamp the back of your hand against your lips to prevent a whimper. Beomgyu shrugs, paying no mind to your stubbornness. “Guess I'll have to force it out of you.”
He’s cocky now, but the more he rubs against you, the louder and sloppier he gets. “Don’t cum in your pants over dry humping me, Beomie.” You mock. In return he ends with one last slow grind. “Shut up.”
He relents, mouthing the opening of your core again and lapping it in circles—prying it open with his fingers, tongue moving to suck on the tip. Toes curling, you grip at the headboard as he eats you out. His hips buck at the sheets beneath him, ruining the cloth he was praising a few minutes ago. “I’m close,” you sputter, grip on his strands tightening with little regard for his breathing.
Beomgyu—the brat that he is, halts the process once more, and you shoot him an annoyed look. “Are you serious right now? Do you not want me to cum?”
He purses his lips as if in thought, leaning to spread kisses over your clavicle. “Tell me that—” “You groan, throwing one of the smaller pillows at him. “Be for real. I’m not doing that shit.” The other pretends to sulk, hands working his way through your body and massaging your breasts. “Fine. Tell me what you want then, since my princess is so impatient and temperamental. You moan at the new nickname, and he doesn’t fail to notice. “I’ll call you all the names you want if you just tell me what you want.”
He’s back to teasing your entrance. Defeated, you tell him as fast as you can, “Need to cum, need you in me.”
Beomgyu tuts, shaking his head. “What’s the magic word?”
“Now.” You hiss, glare sharp. All he does is smile, kissing you one last time. “Okay, only because you’re so cute and you need me.” You’re not given the time to act all snobbish about his words, thoughts cut off by the sudden moaning at your cunt, Beomgyu trying and succeeding at pushing all your buttons as he sends you to the edge. A long moan exits you as you ride your orgasm out on his face, seeing spots of white as your mind tingles in pleasure.
The brunette kneels to undo his bottoms with your help, with you kissing the bands of the underwear and carved bone. “Like I said,” he sighs, hands on your shoulders to push you back into the mattress, “Impatient..”
He curses as the tip of his dick runs through the lips of your pussy, rutting it slowly. “You’re so hard,” you coo, cupping a cheek and working his dick to press on you, “You look like you haven’t fucked in—ever.” He whines at your ridicule—but it spurs him more, bucking his hips faster against you.
Beomgyu’s lids are heavy and his jaw is slack, grunting. “Look at me,” You start, his eyes finding yours as he whimpers, “I thought you were proving just how much I needed you?”
He says nothing, staring at you intently. You ask, “What do you want?” He moans, grinds deeper and paces wider. “Need to fuck you so bad," you tilt your head, encouraging him to say more.
“Please.”
You give him the go ahead, and he wastes no time in sliding himself in, his desperation making him seem too excited and clingy. You let out a small laugh, though it’s not long before your prideful smirk is displaced by the other’s mouth. By your command, he thrusts swifter with more depth, moaning into your mouth.
Your lips leave his, watching the line so spit snap, falling over his own, pink and swollen. “You look so pretty, my baby.”
It’s so confusing to you, intense in a way that it gets you going, yet also in a sense that it’s heartbreaking. You savor the moments he calls you his, even if it's only for a moment.
“You’re so pretty,” he pants against your temples, short for breath. He clenches his eyes  closed, rolling his hips into you at a painfully slow pace. Your heels dig at the lower portion of his back, urging him to focus on fucking you fast and hard. Beomgyu on the other hand has a different idea in mind. He pulls back, detaching your arms from his, observing the shaft of his cock work its way into your sopping wet cunt. This whole scenario is obscene, dick outlining your stomach when he buries himself into you, pussy clamping on his member, the wet sounds paired with your cries get him off further. “Fuck, I’m close.” He groans, elbows back down near your sides while you cling yourself onto him once more. Thrusts hastier and needier than the last, he mutters something mindlessly—loud enough for you to hear.
“I love you.”
Brows furrowing, you tuck your mouth behind your teeth. Desperately trying to ignore his whimpers and profanities, you find it difficult as he chants the phrase louder like a prayer. You feel the sting of tears building in your eye sockets. Chalking it up to overstimulation, you direct all your energy to hinder it, but you can’t multitask, the bruise forming on your lips finding a break as you squeeze your eyes shut. Soon enough you’re vocal, something in the middle of wailing and moaning. “Beomgyu,” you sob, yanking his tugging his head back to meet your gaze, “I’m—” Drool trickles down your chin; he swipes it away with his thumb, trailing it with quick open-mouthed kisses. “You’re so pretty.” He repeats, smudging your tears on the sides of your face. “Always pretty when you go dumb on my cock.” He moans, rhythm quivering and sights set on getting you to come one last time before chasing his own release. “I’m close, gonna fill you up.” His thrusts fasten in urgency, hissing when you scratch his back and scream his name, your back arching off the mattress. Your hips set its pace to his, and soon enough you come to the feeling of his own, hot and thick as lava against your walls while the both of you ride out your orgasm.
Regulating your breathing, you wipe your tears before he pulls his head up to gaze at you directly. He looks properly fucked out, but pulls out slowly with kisses across your face to distract you from the feeling, settling beside you instead of keeping on top of you.
A slurry of emotions plague your mind all at once, an aftershock that feels like it hit the ground too fast, too soon.
It’s overwhelming—not the good kind of overwhelming you should be feeling when someone tells you they love you, because you know Beomgyu didn't mean it like that. It’s overwhelming in a way that makes you want to gut and lobotomize yourself, cursing about the fact that  you’re feeling such mental and emotional torment over something so trivial.
Mind clearing up a little, you slide the thin duvet up your form; you sit up and clear your throat. “I think we should stop doing this.” You say slowly. The room is still, save for the heavy rain and whirs of the flimsy standing fan. His gaze frantically runs up your body, focusing alternating between your eyes and nothing in particular. His Adam's apple bobs vertically, yet all that comes out of his mouth is one word that teeters on a whisper. “What?” Locking your gaze with his own, you take a shaky breath, “People think we’re dating, Beomgyu. I don’t want this,” you gesture between the two of you, “whatever this is, to get in the way of me finding a potential relationship.” He sinks deeper into the mattress, Gaping at the ceiling. He asks, “Is this so bad?” View following his—you stare at the barren overhead, replying monotonously. “It is if I want to find a loving partner.” “I mean for people to think that we’re dating. Would that be the worst?” He interjects, the air from your lungs thinning out when you stutter. “Piss off.”
He scoffs, sitting up to match your posture. “It’s not that big of a deal. You get horny, we have sex. That’s it.” You lower your head to shake it. “It is to me. You may not have a problem sticking your dick in anything that moves, but I want to feel wanted.” The bed creaks as he inches his body closer to yours. “Fuck you. I—” You lean back, widening the distance between the two of you. “Don’t start. This is different. I want a loving, meaningful relationship.” “That’s bullshit.”
Now it’s your turn to scoff. “Fuck you.” You spit, beyond aggravated. “You didn’t seem to have a problem with it these past months.” He retorts; you start clenching the plush blanket at your sides, knuckles turning white. After a few beats, you speak up again. “I think we should just be friends.” You watch him gnaw at the lower half of his lips, nodding his head. “Wait, Is it because I said that I love you?” He starts, “because, I don’t ‘love you’ love you. That was a heat-of-the moment, middle-of-sex ‘love you’.”
You render yourself taciturn, silence thickening as time passes. You hold yourself back from saying words you know you wouldn’t be able to take back, Fixating on counting the droplets resting on the window. His hands sneak up and move your face to look at him, coaxing his forehead against yours after planting a delicate peck on the wrinkles.
“I don’t love you. Promise.”
Beomgyu brushes his lips on the corners of your own, thumbing circles gently across your cheeks. “You have nothing to worry about.”
His grasp on you has gone icy and numbing, matching the cool of the downpour as your mind tunes into its melancholic static.

She's taken a leap of absence
Tumblr media
Her body laid numbly under Adam's foot, the blood seeping up her throat as she coughed it out onto herself.
The static noise grew as Alastor watched Adam's foot dig deeper into his beloved's chest.
"Get your dirty foot off of her." He growls, his dark black shadowy tentacles extending from his back as they ready to rip the first man apart.
"Haha I don't think so. Dirty ungrateful sinners like you and her don't deserve life even in the darkest depts of hell. So, I'm going to do everyone a favor and kill her." Adam laughs, his egotistical voice coming out proud and confident.
Snarling Alastor's body grows, his limbs cracking as Adam stares up in horror.
"What are you." He says disgusted, before shaking his head putting back on his confident and proud exterior. "I'm not scared of some sinner." He laughs.
"Al' just let it be. I-" She coughs harshly, her voice coming out weakly. "I don't want you t-to get hurt. Please." She pleads.
Alastor's eyes land on his wife's dying body causing his anger to spike again, his tentacle limbs grabbing Adam.
"Fuck you." He states, ripping his body off of his wife's before throwing him into the air where Charlie waited for him.
Before anyone knew it, Alastor grabbed her before his shadows allowed them both to sink into ground disappearing from everyone's sight.
Landing in his broadcasting studio, Alastor looked around for a spot on the ground that hadn't been destroyed yet. Finding a spot her carefully sat her against a panel, his eyes searching her body for the injury that he knew was killing her.
"Al' it's ok." She said softly, reaching her hand up to cup his cheek.
"No." He states desperately his eyes unfocused as they fly around hoping to think of something, anything. "I-I have to think of something. You can't die on me again." He whimpers, the radio filter that always covers his old voice now off. Desperation clear in everything he does.
"Oh, my sweet boy. There's nothing we can do now." Smiling weakly at the man before coughing as she bends over to the side, the puddle of blood growing. "Just lay with me. Please." She says lip quivering as she tries to hold her calm exterior for his sake.
"Please don't leave me. Everyone always leaves me." His lips quivers as the tears start to pool down his face. She was the only person he would let himself go for, the only person who see this side of him.
Sliding down the panel next to her, he carefully lifts her into his lap before setting her down. Laying her head on his shoulder she places a kiss on the junction between his neck and collarbone.
"I'm not leaving you; I promise. I'll always be here even if you can't see me, my love."
Alastor listens to her breathing weaken as she nears the end of her life. His heart breaking deeper as her breaths get softer and softer.
"I love you so much, please understand that I'm not leaving by choice." She says, wanting him to know that she would never leave him no matter what. "This isn't your fault my love. Please do not blame yourself once I'm gone." She pleads.
"Ok." He whimpers. "I love you so much. I'm so sorry I couldn't give you a child like you always wanted."
Chuckling weakly, she reaches up and pulls his head down softly to look at her eye to eye. "I only ever wanted a child because it would give me another reminder of you, my love. You're all I've ever wanted."
Sniffling, Alastor leans down and places his lips on hers. All his love and sadness put into this one kiss. All he wanted was a few more minutes, a few more hours with her, but alas everything has to end at some point. Kissing back, she uses the last of her energy, smiling into it.
Alastor felt her kissing back until she wasn't. Her body laying limp in his arms.
"No. No, no, no, no!" He yells clutching her body closer to his. Now sobbing he nuzzles his head into her hair, wanting to drown in her scent.
~~
"Where's Alastor and Scarlett?" Charlie asks the group worriedly.
"I don't know I haven't seen them since-" Vaggie was cut off by the appearance of Alastor, his large smiles straining on his face. His appearance disheveled, the small tear stains on his cheeks noticeable to everyone but Charlie as they all look down in sadness and guilt. Angel with tears in his eyes, Husk and Vaggie giving sympathetic looks.
"Oh Alastor!" Charlie says happily. "We were so worried. Where is-" She continues only to get cut off by Vaggie's hand on her shoulder as she shook her head silently, glum look on her face.
Charlie looks at Vaggie for a second in confusion before gasping, her hands flying towards her mouth, eyes tearing up.
"It seems Scarlett is taking a leap of absence for a while. With that I will also be taking my leave. Good day." He says his normal radio voice absent, as he trails off before turning around and leaving the hotel. Little did the rest of the group know, that would be the last they saw of him for a while...

It' Fine Press Friday!
Coat of Art
Wisconsin artist Mark Brueggeman's work, which I have had the privilege of encountering during my internship in Special Collections, captivates with its distinctive artistic vision. This unique piece of art is a portfolio of broadsides inspired by the poem, A Coat, by W. B. Yeats, the first Irish Nobel laureate in literature.
The portfolio was published in Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, at Brueggeman’s Atelier Vermeil Studio in 2016, printed in an edition of 20 copies with Optima 24 type and intaglio and relief prints on Riverpoint paper, a Strathmore paper made at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, where Brueggeman taught for many years.
Mark Brueggeman’s work spans a variety of media, a testament to his versatility and skill. His repertoire includes printing, pastels, intaglio and relief printing, letterpress, and drawing in ink, graphite, and pastel. He earned his undergraduate degree in drawing and painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and his graduate degree in drawing and fiber sculpture at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.
Written in 1912, A Coat reflects a period in Yeats’ life when he was attempting to change his writing style. He experimented with various techniques and approaches, constantly striving to enrich and expand his writing. As a result, his poetry underwent numerous transformations, ultimately leading to the creation of his unique voice and style. When it comes to the poem’s meaning, it could refer to anything from Yeats’ own writing style to the futility of war or perhaps something else entirely. One of the most extraordinary things about poetry is that it is open to interpretation, allowing each reader to find their own meaning in the words.

If you feel up to it, care to ramble about things you like about Epic Mickey? Idk anything about it but you've gotten me intrigued 👀
YES ID LOVE TOO!!!
So Epic Mickey is a wii game, from around 2010i think? You use the wiimote and nunchuck to paint/thinner things in your way. Paint restores certain things made out of 'toon' (brightly colored) and thinner gets rid of it. You can thin or paint your enemies too, and there's also the three paths you can take
Thinner path is basically the evil path while Paint is the good path. There's littke side things in each 'level'. Quests, hidden chests, and secrets like concept art.
SPEAKIN OF THE ART
Tumblr media
JUST. LOOK AT THIS!!!! ITS SO SO COOL! And seriously, if you're ok with melted creepy things I'd recommend looking up the concept art. It's just. Mwah!
The grimy dark atmosphere is perfect with the story. I dont want to spoil much, incase you want to check it out yourself. So. The Wasteland is a place where forgotten toons live, created by Yen Sid and ruled by Oswald The Lucky Rabbit. Oswald is Mickeys brother, created by Walt Disney (irl too! Oswald was one of Disney's first characters that he gave up before creating Mickey Mouse).
Mickey is pulled into the Wasteland after a Series of Unfortunate Events that he may or may not be at the fault of. After the Wasteland had a Thinner Disaster its been mostly reduced to rubble and broken theme parks. Mickey is determined to get home and fix the Wasteland as much as he can along the way, and maybe reunite with his brother.
There'd a LOT MORE I left out but seriously. It's great. It has a really good sequel too, Power of Two. (Its on steam/ps3. Epic Mickey is only on wii but it can be emulated I believe)
And last bit that I utterly ADORE is the MUSIC!! THE SOUNDTRACK!
JUST LISTEN TO THE OPENING THEME !!!! and the rest of the game has littke musical keys that go along with older Disney movies, it's incredible.
Seriously, check out the ost. It's haunting and well. Epic
Unfortunately Disney shut down Junction Point Studio after Epic Mickey Two didn't have the same sales as the first game, but there were plans to make a third. To bad Disney is a greedy moneysucking leech

Ok so I did some digging and this is a rabbit hole. So Disney Interactive Studios (DIS) made Epic Mickey 1 and 2. With support from Developer Junction Point (that became a DIS subsidiary between the development EM 1 and EM2) and it was done in conjunction with Nintendo. then Disney closed DIS. and moved its IPs around. the problem is DIS only really owned two relevant IPs. Kingdom Hearts and Epic Mickey. KH was licensed to Square Enix and has been a SQ/DIS thing so that was easy. But Epic Mickey was weird. the studio was defunct and Disney didn't really know what to do with it. So they started shopping it as a license. eventually the some of the devs from Junction Point ended up working at Purple Lamp, a studio owned by THQ Nordic. so Disney got a payout in the range of 50-150 Million (based on estimates and guess work) from THQ for the license. So Disney has received most of the money they will receive. I highly doubt Disney let go of EM without some dollar per sale agreement, but that's behind closed doors. either way, Disney is 100% making cash off this remake and if that is a problem, pirate away!
Anyway, i'm excited and also will likely not be purchasing Epic Mickey Rebrushed.
For people who may be wary about getting rebrushed, it’s not being published by Disney! Unlike the past Epic Mickey games

B.I.T.I. (Before Is This It)
London
While Pete and Carl were throwing poetry nights there was a bunch of bands bubbling in the London underground with a punk attitude and banging tunes. A scene was forming, it just needed a break, which came once The Libertines had theirs.
There was loads of bands, some lasted a few gigs, a handful lasted a few albums. This is how it went for a few of them.
Special Needs
Special Needs was a band ahead of their time (forming in 1998) and they never got the opportunity to fully live out their potential, their name often drew controversy (they briefly changed it to The Needs) and they fell victim of being on a major label.
Zac Stephenson “I worked at a London Irish newspaper in 1997 and Daniel (Shack) came along to do work experience. We had enough overlap of musical interest to become friends and he was learning guitar, I wanted to sing so first we started just kind of jamming in his bedroom. Then Phil started coming along and bringing his bass.
At this point our main influence was probably the Manic Street Preachers, mainly the Richey period when they were a lot cooler. We all dyed our hair, wore eyeliner, shirts with spray-painted slogans, feather boas, the whole kit and caboodle. Slightly cringe now to look back on that.
We did some sessions in a rehearsal room with a drummer I roped in, auditioned a few more but it looked like it was doomed to fail when Daniel and Phil decided to go to University in Sheffield.
A few months in though, they rang me and told me they had met Andrew, who had an interesting vision about what a band could be like, and asked me if I’d still be interested in trying to get something going. I was, so I’d get the train up to Sheffield every few weekends and we’d do some stuff in a practice room.
We went through drummers faster than you go through underwear but we persevered for the whole time they were at university. Summers in London gave us a bit of progress and then when they returned back to London we focussed on finding the perfect drummer and we did in Neil. He was better than any drummer we’d ever worked with before but he’d still go into a rehearsal room on his own and practice for hours. And he had a brilliant droll Scottish sense of humour. Just fitted in so perfectly. He was the missing piece of the jigsaw so to speak. He was like a sweeper in football. Sort of tidied up everything that was wrong with us musically.
Still, we were finding it hard to get gigs, mainly due to our name, so we started our own weekly club night in a pub in Acton. It was quite a dive but we loved it. And we’d fly around London going to other gigs and nights. The next turning point for us then was when we met Sara and Nadia from the Pyrrha fanzine. They knew everyone. They introduced us to John Kennedy at Xfm, to Razorlight, and possibly most crucially Alan McGee. John Kennedy started championing us and we saw more people coming to our gigs. Then Alan offered us a single deal (on his label, {Poptones), which graduated to an album deal with Mercury and the rest is history I suppose.
We recorded the album in March 2005 with Ian Grimble at 2khz in Willesden Junction. Alan McGee had spoken to a bunch of other producers, including Mick Jones, Bernard Butler and Andrew Loog Oldham. In fact Loog Oldham had apparently wanted to do it but he couldn’t make it work. It’s my favourite anecdote of the time that Alan McGee said that “the singer…” (me) was “…flying on the wings of greatness”. I mean that’s the guy that managed Oasis at the height of their powers, so it’s hard to imagine better.
Anyway, Ian had worked with the Manics, Travis, Texas, so he had a good CV. He was a bit of a taskmaster. We did a week in preproduction where he helped us sculpt or prune some of the songs. I remember near the end of that process Alan came into the studio to hear how the songs were sounding. After we finished each song he said the same thing: “It’s a hit”.
Ian made us do countless takes. Real perfectionist. Massively underrated producer. For one of the songs he set up the drum kit in the bathroom because he thought the tiles in there would give the acoustics he thought would work better for that song. He was right.
I think the funniest incident in those recording sessions from my perspective was walking in to the kitchen and seeing the American artist Grace Jones looking in a state of distress. I asked her if she was OK and she walked up to me about six inches from my face and said, “I’m looking for honey.” So I helped Grace Jones scour the studios kitchen for a jar of honey. Unsuccessfully, I might add.”

In the autumn of 2005 Mercury cancelled the bands' record contract as new management at the label cleared a lot of Poptones roster. The band negotiated a deal to keep the rights for the album but they didn’t have a label to put it out, the situation was frustrating for the band, audiences at gigs were getting smaller, they were skint, Zac moved back to Ireland and they broke up.
The band were approached by ReAction Records who wanted to put out the album which was finally released in August 2006, receiving positive reviews but the band had moved on, there wasn’t the temptation to reform.
After a 5-year break, the band had stayed in touch via Facebook and they decided to get back together, initially just for one gig at Proud in Camden, however, it sold out and they loved it so much that they said yes to every other gig they got offered, including gigs in New York and Norway.
Zac Stephenson “Well, Glastonbury was one highlight. From that day onwards you’re always able to say you played Glastonbury which I think is a major ambition for pretty much every band starting out. Playing Hyde Park was great. New Year’s Eve we packed out the Kentish Town Forum. Touring was often fun. Could be tiring and tedious at times but when we got on stage it was (usually) brilliant.
I used to love the radio sessions, Xfm, BBC, Virgin. And seeing your CD on the shelves in HMV was a kind of bucket list thing too.
But I guess overall it was just seeing people packed together in venues singing the songs back to you. Our reunion gig at Proud Camden was beyond belief. 600+ people crammed in on a Tuesday night in February. We hadn’t played live for 5 years so the anticipation was palpable. Electric atmosphere.”
The Crimea
The Crimea became one of John Peel’s favourite bands but their story begins a few years earlier, with the heavier and intense band, The Crocketts, a story that shows the destruction the music industry can have on people.
Despite the negatives, The Crimea became trailblazers as they released their second album, Secrets of the Witching Hour for free online in 2007 which saw them featured in the news around the world while supporting huge bands such as Kings of Leon and Coldplay. Sadly, the years of mental health and addiction took its toll on frontman Davey, just as the band were reaching the goal they had been striving for.
Davey Macmanus “The Crocketts started in 1995, we were so young, 18, when we got signed to V2. When we did our first photoshoot, it was with Mario Testino and it cost a lot of money, our manager said I looked a bit tubby so I developed an eating disorder which I had for the next 20 years, I thought food was poison. Our first tour was with The Pogues, I worshipped Shane Magowan, we were introduced to hard drugs, we were doomed from the start, somehow we were grouped into the whole indie scene, maybe because we formed in Aberystwyth and were part of the Welsh scene, touring with Stereophonics a lot, Space, Catatonia, Super Furries, 60ft Dolls. I became an alcoholic and drug addict. Every concert I was on ecstasy. I started hurting myself onstage, This became a thing, as our songs were about being bullied, self-harm and eating disorders, we attracted a crazy fanbase who came to all our concerts and showed me their scars.

Although the band was doing very well in terms of selling out bigger and bigger shows and getting 5 out of 5 in the music papers, commercially we didn't sell enough records and V2 brought us into their office one day, there was a new head of A&R, Malcolm Dunbar, he played us three songs, Stereophonics’ Have a Nice day, Feeder’s Buck Rogers and Blink 182’s famous song, Then he told us he wanted our third album to sound like that. It didn’t, our music was getting heavier and heavier and our actions more destructive, we were dropped.
Suddenly we had to get jobs, me and Dan, the guitarist were working the nightshift in Sainsburys in Romford. Instead of taking cocaine we were taking speed, instead of drinking Jack we were drinking yellow pack, we were all living in the same house, and eventually, I woke up one morning and Rich the bass player was gone, then Dan the guitar player locked himself in his bedroom and didn't come out for several weeks, then suddenly he was gone. There was only me and Owen the drummer left, we decided to completely reinvent ourselves, change our style and sound and play beautiful music. Instead of our audience smashing the venues they would sit down like at the cinema.
We were so lucky, we rapidly built up a following, suddenly instead of being in Kerrang we were in The Guardian, we were being lauded as cool which was amazing that we had turned that tide around and people were respecting our change of direction. We weren’t part of any scene until later on by accident because we played with lots of big bands that liked our music.
I met John Peel outside the American Embassy in Grosvenor Square. I was working for the council, sweeping the streets, it was autumn and the leaves kept falling from the trees, it was a fucking nightmare, I was dressed in the street cleaner uniform and I had one of those dustcarts you push, I recognised John Peel going into the Embassy and I went up to him and gave him a demo CD, that night he played all 7 songs from the CD on his show. He said on air that he went back and listened to The Crocketts but he didn't like them, but he loved The Crimea. Before he died he said about Lottery Winners on Acid ‘I could listen to that forever and ever”. He helped us so much and played us so much but after that first meeting I never met him again.
We were just incredibly lucky again, while at South by South West we were seen by Perry Watts Russell a famous A&R guy for Warner Bros. We were actually offered a few different deals and we went with him because he had signed Radiohead, Damian Rice and Arcade Fire and all these other people. Plus we wanted to go and live in America.
For our debut album we went to Mississippi to record with this famous producer, He had just produced Modest Mouse (who we toured with later) Cop Car single so he was the hot guy at the time. We were there for months and months but we were just getting high and not getting much done, while the producer was changing all our songs in ways we didn't like. He wore a white coat because he was meant to be a scientific genius. I didn't get on with him, I liked him a lot and we were friends but we had different musical ideas, we wasted hundreds and thousands of dollars with this dude, so we went to New York for another long period of time and re-recorded the album with another producer in James Iha’s studio.

I kinda knew we were going to be dropped as our singles from the album had been on the decline, no.20 something, then no.47, then no.60 in the charts, Radio 1 had yet again (for the second band in a row) refused to playlist us, we had the A list on Xfm but that didn’t matter, we had amazing press but that didn’t matter.
So when we were dropped by Warner Bros. we still had a really good publishing deal with WEA so that kept us going and we recorded an album ourselves, we had an old house near Norwich in the country and we rehearsed there for weeks on end and recorded, the band were amazing, Joe, Andy and Owen and the guitar player we had at the time Andy,  and we all stuck together and worked hard. We went to Latvia to mix the record with Greg Haver, we loved the album, because we made it ourselves and it was dear to us.
It wasn’t our idea to release it for free, it was our manager Tav. It was an incredible idea. We played on top of Primrose Hill at midnight on the day of release and the album was released at the same time, there were hundreds of people there, the next day we went to China on tour and we were on the front cover of newspapers all over the world, it was truly mindblowing, all the news channels were interviewing us and all these papers and we’re in China so it looked really cool.
Q Magazine said it was one of the top 5 moments that changed music, we did get some credit for it, maybe not enough, but we got some adverts out of it and could still sell out our shows everywhere so we got to continue
At first we had to pay to tour with other bands like The Pogues, The Levellers and Stereophonics, then we became friends with the Stereophonics and we never had to pay them to tour again, I enjoyed touring with Billy Corgan, Kings of Leon, Travis, Modest Mouse, Snow Patrol, Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol actually financed our third album, Square Moon, he also financed my volunteering in Africa as a nurse.
I had a lot of problems with my mental health, with the eating disorder, with self-harm, with drug addiction, then with a heroin addiction, When it came time to release Square Moon I was so frazzled I couldn’t tour or do interviews so I just had to stop the band and leave when we had just made our greatest record and finally achieved what we had been trying to achieve for 20 years.
I didn’t get any support from any labels, in fact they encouraged me to be wild, I had a lot of support from my bandmates and my family but they couldn’t help me. I just felt this pressure all the time as the songwriter to come up with hit songs, so I was obsessed with writing and trying to write hits the whole time, that's why we only really developed our sound when we were dropped and it gave me the freedom to not have to worry about writing hits and inadvertently wrote our best music

Releasing Square Moon on double vinyl and the reviews it got are things I look back on fondly, then becoming a nurse and going to Africa, the highlight of my career was playing round a campfire in the middle of a desert to a bunch of orphans with HIV, you have to really sing from your heart when you don’t have a microphone.”
Neils Children
Neils Children are one of the bands who were overlooked during the 2000’s but their DIY ideals and approach to consistently evolve is the reason that they have continued to make music, well, the 2 founding members, frontman John and drummer Brandon, they’ve got through a handful of bassists over their years.
Scenes aren’t built to last but Neils Children have never been part of the scene which has allowed them to be different to the trends or a short-lived fad.
Firstly, they formed in 1999, before The Strokes arrived, by the time the 2000’s bands were starting out Neils Children had already been together a couple of years. They came from Harlow, on the outskirts of London, they were inspired by the ‘60’s and they sounded different varying between post-punk, freakbeat pop and psychedelia. They looked different too, decked out in black with makeup, big hair, fur coats, skinny jeans and pointy shoes, they had to time their journeys into London to avoid trouble with football fans. They were doing this years before their mates, The Horrors, who they influenced.
Everything about the band was intense and their live shows were always exciting. The band was fearless and did everything themselves.
The pair were studying music together and immediately bonded over bands, within a couple of months, they were in the rehearsal rooms in college. John already knew how to play guitar, Brandon had to learn the drums and their classmate Tom was on bass.
Aged 16 and looking for music that excited them was hard in 1999, until they discovered ‘60’s pop which then led them to the underground psychedelic scene.
It wasn’t just the music but the clothes, the style and the community which was lively in Mousetrap, a ‘60’s psychedelic club night in Finsbury Park. They were the young outsiders but they quickly fitted in.
They rehearsed a lot and started playing regularly, word got around that they were an exciting young band, described as freak-beat ‘60’s and even though that was what they were listening to, ‘80’s influences organically crept in too giving them a punk edge with The Jam and Buzzcocks. In the summer of 2000 they met Rhys, who would go on to form The Horrors years later and they struck up a great friendship and became the house band at his club, Junk, in Southend.
Their influences would grow even further when they discovered the likes of Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Rapture who were starting to make their way over to the UK. This then took them on to listening to Public Image Ltd and Gang Of Four, their sound evolved into something more raw with a nod to post-punk and a contemporary twist.
John’s grandad managed the band, he helped them out financially and drove them around. He had no interest in music but loved being part of the gang. He joined them on a tour of Spain before the band had released anything, organised by friends from the psychedelic scene. They drove for three days to Barcelona and made their way around the country for 10 gigs with a settee in the back of a van and a map to get around. It was DIY at its best and they loved it.
youtube
Soft City Recordings signed them up in 2003 to release their ‘first album’, the band don’t really like it to be looked on as their first album as it was a few singles and a bunch of songs they quickly recorded. These days it would probably be called a ‘mixtape’ today, the label was keen to get it out as a stepping stone for the band to get signed to a major label. They practiced a lot, they were super tight and ended up recording 4 or 5 songs a day, all live.
Once the band started seeing others investing in them they upped their game, stripped everything back to give fans the best possible show, developing their songs and ‘think’ about what they were doing instead of just doing it. Although they toured a lot in the UK, it was Europe where they found more success.
John’s grandad took a backseat from management as the band signed to a new label and got a management team in place. In 6 weeks they recorded what was meant to be their debut album in a studio on Old Street, London, they supported The Horrors on a UK 2-week tour then went on a headline tour for 2 weeks.
The relationship with both the label and management team quickly went sour. They had been used to their DIY approach and got things done themselves, they found that things got slowed down when working with others. A single should have been ready to sell on The Horrors support tour but it was delayed and they weren’t happy with how the mix of the recordings for the album sounded so they got out of the contract, lost the songs and started again.
After going on hiatus the band returned with a new psychedelic sound and went to France to record an album.
John and Brandon were super close, John’s grandad was part of it too and each bassist they had played a key role in the journey, making the band feel more like a family.
