DO THE HIPPIE HIPPIE SHAKE ; not pictured, but they have seen Two or Three pictures of hippies, and they’ve worn a patchwork skirt and a beaded top and sandals on the occasion.  and perhaps theyve entertained embroidering a smiley face on their jeans.  but anything about hippies are Banned from the apartment because sid doesn’t like them.  peas and luv everybody !!

ive been here less and less, which kind of sucks because (ow) i love this character more than i could ever put into words but the rpc has been very very very dead recently and most of my friends have moved on.  its sad because i almost made it to a year on this account :’(

do they have any pet peeves?

being underestimated or relegated to “ditzy useless moron” without being given a chance. 683 is, very clearly, a ditzy useless moron, but 683 has managed to get this far for a reason. what she lacks in common sense she has in abundance with determination!!  a lot of the reason she also comes across as “stupid” is because she’s just very sheltered. her intelligence isn’t to be underestimated and she did just fine working in a science-based career (albeit one she hated) and has only managed to close the gap in musical talent so quickly because she’s a math savant.  she hates being “othered” just because she might not be in the latest loop

their comfort read? (could be a book, magazine, comics, etc)

old magazines. he has no idea who any of the people in them are, what they’ve done or where they are now, but it’s a comforting snapshot in time boiled down to a nostalgic simplicity that is very easy to digest and interact with.  even the advertisements radiate the allure of the unknown.  he likes teen beat. lol

if the book they are reading turns out to be shit, do they push through just for the sake of finishing it, or do they move on and find something else?

they absolutely move on.  683 is the kind of person who would take one bite out of every chocolate in a box and then throw it away -- the allure of novelty and newness is incredibly enticing to them, so much so that they often lose interest in things half way through.  there’s just SO MUCH out there and theyre SO EXCITED to see it all ... why read a book they dont like when they’re certain they’ll find one that’ll make them CRAZY if they just try again?  

their comfort tv show / film?

683 doesn’t often remember the titles or names of things they’ve watched, but just the content. and inevitably, it all kind of blends together into a mush because they hardly understand any of it (a lot of films require context on preexisting knowledge, such as culture or trends, and 683 barely even knows what high school is).  they really like any kind of “silly” science fiction, so they like marvin the martian cartoons and invader zim, my life as a teenage robot, robot jones.  easy to understand and incredibly visually appealing and entertaining.  lack of context made it difficult for them to appreciate the full extent of it (private schools, theater, etc), but they still really enjoyed watching rushmore (the movie).  

a song that is currently stuck in their head? (or multiple)

she’s always got a song stuck in her head, but it’s usually her own!  she’s listening to a lot of the who right now -- she gets them confused with the guess who.  but she likes BOTH their versions of shakin’ all oooovaaaaaa

the next three questions are for you. do you have anything special in common with your character?

:| honestly i guess im kinda glad that this got put under a read more it’s cringe time.  i think a lot of 683 does come from a very exaggerated personal experiences -- there’s the shallow stuff skimmed off the top, that 683 is an expression of my interest in retrofuturism, the 70s, scifi, aliens, etc. but there’s also 683 as a stand in for the experience of being part of a disapora community or even just being a member of any “alienated” (haha) community in general

a major critique i have with a lot of contemporary asian american self reflection work is it often goes into “ugh! i hate my PARENTS i hate my culture now i have trauma from being othered asians are so repressive!” and i COMPLETELY ... UNDERSTAND ... HOW BADLY ... growing up in a super traditional asian household can fuck you up ... but i wish we’d move past that discussion and realize we fall into the trap of desperately wanting to assimilate rather than acknowledge who we are, because we ARENT white americans, and we arent necessarily like asian people from asia, we are a unique experience.  683 is not necessarily the best atominan, but 683 is obviously not a human being by biology -- they cannot change who they were born as, no matter how obsessed they become with a (very western -- rock music and mod clothes!) culture. their initial reaction is indignant rage and loathing of their home culture -- atomina is oppressive, atomina is bad, atomina is boring, atomina stifles me.  humanity becomes this great unknown that they feel will fulfill them, the allure of the other.  but the course of the story (which i never share because i feel cringe) is that 683 realizes atomina isnt bad, atomina is just different, and atomina loves them all the same.  they cannot deny that they arent human and they should love being atominan while also acknowledging that maybe they dont want to live there and they dont mind being an atominan amongst humans

i had a whole scene scripted for a board i never did -- 683 lives in a predominantly white area of london but sid, priscilla and 683 shop/hang out/have friends in mostly immigrant areas.  he eats a lot at a filipino grocery store and the lady there always knows what he likes (halo halo but make it vegan you can DO IT -- lumpia with veggies only), and sometimes she gives him free food if he offers to help out with things around the store (put boxes on shelves, label things, etc)

one day she asks him to help with making a balikbayan box (balikbayan is basically any pinoy overseas, so it’s like a box you send home to your family still in the philippines with presents from wherever u are, because there are so many diaspora filipinos) and he sits on the floor with her while she packs it.  i pack these with my mom all the time!! i used to sit on the finished boxes when i was little lol cuz theyre HUGE but theyre filled with love and care and labeling it with those big letters -- CAUAYAN CITY -- idk idk whatever but she gets on the topic of family, says he ought to consider sending one home too (she assumes he’s also filipino or at least some kind of asian)

home is a sore subject for him so he avoids it, he says he doesnt have anyone to send one too and she ends up talking to him about it and he awkwardly implies he’s estranged from his family.  ofc she tells him his family loves him no matter what and they miss him and must be worried about him being so far away.  stuff stuff stuff. it’s just stuff things.  i dont know.

but i guess a lot more personal experiences went into 683 than i thought x_x

its a little clumsy, its hard to articulate my thoughts. but 683 is very much asian american, not just asian

what brings you the most joy about writing this character, right now?

this is MYYYYYY OC its my first OC on tumblr! obviously i love all the characters i write for but its MYYYY OC and ive devoted SO much time into 683 ... whats on my blog is just the tip of the iceberg because everything else goes into my schoolwork and personal projects.  ive animated 683, storyboarded 683, made an enormous amount of concept art ... and instead of putting all the time into JUST 683, it’s the whole world 683 is from, so that includes designing both atomina and the place 683 lives, designing all the humans they meet and live with, designing all the atominans, etc.  there are probably 30+ characters in 683′s story so far and it spans about 7 years of his life (ofc told in little snippets).  

who would win in a fight, you or them?

me, and i wouldnt fight 683, i would kill her with my bare hands. next question

1. What does your muse smell like?

without soap or perfume, 683 smells bizarrely sterile, chemical-ish, like a dentist’s office, bleach or cleaning supplies.  like hand sanitizer that kills 99.9% of germs.  they have that faint smell of powdery clean cosmetics, only because they wear so much foundation, face powder and setting spray.  humans like things that smell less artificial, so 683 takes to using cheap perfume (think a teenager who just learned to douse themselves with axe or bath and bodyworks spray), which is artificial in a slightly more palatable way.  their clothes (which are almost all second hand) have that mothball-musty smell of a thrifted dress that hasn’t been washed yet, like an old book.    

2. What do your muse’s hands feel like?

cold, frigid and icy, almost like a mannequin’s if you left the mannequin in the freezer. their skin is tight over their tendons and fingers, with almost waxy, plasticy skin stretched over their joints and knuckles, which makes them seem very fragile.  sometimes their palms are uncannily clammy.  their skin on their palms isn’t rough or calloused but they’re starting to get scars on their fingertips from their voyages into the realm of string instruments.  they used to have very neat, clean and unpainted nails, but nowadays, they have divots and cracks because 683 is clumsy with the strings.  

3. What does your muse usually eat in a day?

683 is often at the mercy of when their friends will decide to cook for them/buy them food.  they don’t have any cooking skills and can barely wash and cut an apple (this isn’t because they’re stupid, on atomina they were used to communal dining with a designated set of people who cooked for everyone in their unit).  683 is naturally accustomed to eating plant matter and (unlike us humans) has a way better digestive system for breaking down cellulose and gets a lot more out of their vegetarian diet than you might expect (two stomachs aint for nothin).  left to their own devices they just eat Whatever (orange? handfuls of spinach, unwashed, pesticides dont hurt them.  microwave a tomato and watch it explode.  brave cutting open an avocado and just eating it with a spoon).  dinner is when priscilla either buys him take out or sid cooks something for him (and sid is an amazing cook!!!).  sid isn’t vegetarian, but his family is, so he knows how to make all kinds of dishes perfect for 683 -- substitute the dairy for nondiary alternatives and 683′s getting matter paneer (with tofu instead), malai kofta (with coconut milk), and aloo gobi (no butter), all sorts of things !!! 

4. Does your muse have a good singing voice?

sort of.  683′s voice, by itself, is nasally and weird and a little grating, but their devotion to music lets them make the most out of their “strange” voice and almost use it to their benefit to sound unique, different, super far out !11!11111  their lyrics, instrumentals and emotion combined is what makes them a talented musician rather than just a good quality voice.  so while they might not have a very pretty voice, they’re still a skilled singer due to their delivery.  

5. Does your muse have any bad habits or nervous ticks?

im assuming this is about bad (physical) habits rather than personality deficiencies (of which 683 has many).  683 stares, like, really just stares at people with reckless abandon, they havent figured out it’s rude.  they arent good at even pretending to listen so if they’re disinterested in what you have to say, they’ll look elsewhere, pick at their nails, mumble or interrupt you.  always finds a way to make the conversation about themself.  very disorganized and messy, has a hard time taking care of objects even if they value them (ex. dropping his guitar, misplacing jewelry, yanking a belt off and breaking it).  definitely self pities and has no problem trying to guilt you for everything and anything.  is a pretty frequent smoker, but is polite enough not to smoke if you ask him not to.  

683 is always a little nervous so their nervous ticks are just their baseline state of being (wringing hands, stammering, talking really fast, making insane gestures all around you but being too afraid to touch you, etc)

6. What does your muse usually look like / wear?

683 looks very put together at all times -- not necessarily polished or professional, but very intentional, in that you can tell they definitely made a conscious choice to dress the way they do.  he wore the same dumb uniform every day for the first 20 years of his life, so he’s very excited to try new clothing options.  

more femme-ish clothing preferences go to boxy, sleeveless a-line dresses, miniskirts, bright floral patterns, big plastic earrings, headbands, scarves, etc.  they like clunky platforms and prefer to wear boots.  very 60s mod and colorblocked.  she loves bright eyeshadow but tends to go for more neutral lipstick.  can never figure out what to do with her hair so she usually leaves it down or does a half-up half-down bun kinda deal.  

more masc clothing preferences are bell bottoms, button ups with butterfly collars, paisley print, turtlenecks and fringe jackets, etc. earthy tones and weird nasty olive green.  very late 60s / early 70s. prog rock flavor or glam rock flavor.  never got into the disco style only because he cant pull it off because he’s so scrawny and twitchy and has no chest hair to impress the ladies.    

one thing about 683 is that he hates tight long sleeves and goes insane if he has to wear them.  his uniform was sleeveless, so even short sleeves feel really weird and horrible on his arms.  prefers sleeveless, can do with short sleeves, 3/4ths sleeve or loose long sleeve, really tries to avoid tight/constricting long sleeves.  

i have a pinterest board of potential fits for him although i havent updated it because i barely know how to use pinterest.

7. Is your muse affectionate?  How much?  How so?

to most people, not really, he’s kind of a weird cagey asshole.  oscillates between fascinated with physical touch (suddenly wanting to hug his friends or snuggle with them or grabbing strangers when he’s trying to talk to them) to despising contact (cringes if you touch his hand when you pass him a cup).  he didnt grown up with a culture very big on it, so he isn’t sure if he likes it or not yet.  

to people he does care about, he tends to take his friends for granted but overperform affection for those he has romantic interest in.  not that he doesnt also dearly love and adore his friends, he’s just not the best at expressing his care for them other than random bursts of kindness and dissolving back into his weird normal self.  his understanding of romance has come from a very commercial, media-influenced place (he learns about it through television, novels and commercials, it’s not really inherent to his species) so he thinks romance is about buying flowers, holding hands, staring into each other’s eyes for three hours, etc. if he has romantic interest in you, he will constantly over and over again tell you how much he likes you and your company and you are soooo funny hahahhahhfhh, and will be unusually touchy (clings to your arm, sits RIGHT next to you, drops his head on your shoulder, etc).  

8. What position does your muse sleep in?

683 didnt know what blankets were until he came to earth (or deep space nine) !!! his old room was perfectly temperature controlled and he already has a lower natural body temperature, so there was no need for blankets at all.  human beds with big pillows and blankets are THE COOLEST, so he either curls up underneath a blanket with only the top of his head poking out or he sprawls out like a starfish to take advantage of as many pillows as possible.  his special move is to roll up in the blanket like some kind of little alien lumpia.  

he’s a fitful sleeper so if you sleep in the same bed as him, he’ll punch you or kick you on accident.  he does appreciate company, though, and will also plaster himself up against you and leech your body heat with his weird cold body.

9. Could you hear your muse in the hallway from another room?

depends.  they have a very average speaking voice and aren’t necessarily very loud (plus platforms dull footsteps), but if they were excited, they might raise their voice or yell or exclaim something.  and then they’re very shrill, so yes, you would hear her.

683′s diet and food habits --    milk, dairy, meat, animal products, etc. make him violently ill and nauseous.  he doesn’t have the right digestive enzymes for any of those kinds of food and eats what is essentially a vegan diet. even within that, a lot of yeast-based foods can still make him sick, which is even more limiting.  he’s used to eating a lot of vegetables and fruits, and coming from a culture that doesn’t really have much of a culinary tradition, he doesn’t mind them raw.  catch him enjoying just a literal uncooked head of broccoli, no seasoning, no nothing.  cooked grains are his main staple, and it’s very sad to watch him eat plain bowls of quinoa.  his favorite food on earth is toasted slices of sweet potato with avocado spread on top.  he likes spring rolls but constantly mispronounces it “sping roll,” would also just eat the rice paper plain.  his favorite dessert is halo halo, no ice cream, sub coconut cream for condensed milk, extra fruit and red bean.  at this point it’s a solid, like, 70% crushed ice though. but he still goes insane for it

    a lot of things that would be toxic to humans are fine by him, so sun screen, hand sanitizer, bleach, cleaning products, moth balls, nail polish -- he can eat them and he’s totally ok. some of these things taste better than others, though, and sun screen is at the top of his list.  so toasted slices of sweet potato with sun screen might be his second favorite food.

sorry for the lack of ic things, i am just tired and school hurts. but here are funny thoughts:

i think 683 is ... ok in the sense that they arent morally evil or anything but they’re the moral equivalent of cartoon characters that hit each other on the head with mallets for fun.  i miss cartoons where everyone is mean to each other for no reason and i would like 683 to join that tradition.  

i thought about the trolley problem and 683 would absolutely run over six people if it means they could get a cool hat or something. and they would feel mildly bad and guilty but justify it because -- life is hard -- their life is hard -- life isnt fair -- its your fault not theirs -- they didnt do anything bad why are you being mean to them -- you did this -- its all your fault.  this is all your fault.  hat

sometimes i feel like it cant come across in writing but 683 is a goofy selfish jerk who constantly tries to get attention from people through showboating/being obnoxious/outright lying and then she inevitably self sabotages so she can do something really silly and funny sound effects play while she walks into the wall or falls down the stairs or vaporizes herself or something (ZAP BOING BRRRRRRR ZIP)

683 is an ethical incel in that he does not hate women but he simply cannot get laid because he is annoying. 

i like 683 and i think he’s just silly. i purport no desire to have 683 exist as some grand metaphor for growing up or maturing out of self pity or the ramifications of a stifling society on someone who acts “different” in a bad way, until i do, and then i intended this all along and im a freakin genius bay-bee! wahoo!

     HE’S UNEXPECTEDLY little -- teeny tiny, microscopic, and 683 must stop herself before she further indulges this delusion: he is regular human-child sized, and it’s not her place to comment.  The cutting, verdant glow of the security office had practically irradiated him into nonexistence, nothing more than a cutting shadow cast upon the floor like the rest of the machinery; in fact, if he hadn’t moved, 683 might not have seen him.  

     DESPITE BEING a newcomer herself, she is familiar with the station’s few young residents, but she cannot place this one’s face -- she furrows her brow in confusion, craning her neck as if she expects an explanation.  Nothing.  And she is woefully unacquainted with human-children protocol.   

     ❝ ARE YOU lost ? ❞  Strange that such an earnest question could be delivered in such a patronizing cadence -- it’s the way she bends slightly at the knee, the saccharine, overworked sweetness of her nasally tenor.  ❝ The Chief of Security is a very, very, very busy person, ❞ she says in that grating, annoying lilt, ❝ so we don’t need to bother him.  But -- don’t be scared -- I can help you find your way back to the habitat ring ! ❞

     THERE’S A generous slathering of smug glee underneath that veneer of feigned professionalism, both chin and serving tray held high.  A glass of Saurian brandy nearly slides off the edge onto a direct collision course with Nadesh’s head, but they snatch it just before it topples and slam it back onto the surface.  ❝ Not unemployed anymore, ❞ they sniff disdainfully, practically radiating dignity even in their skimpy, stupid outfit.  Quark had asked them to work the tables tonight, but after being vastly less popular than the other two dabo girls because, in his words, ‘ you’re, unfortunately, kind of ugly, ’ they were relegated back to being a waiter.  ❝ So, ❞ they continue, a disinterested drawl,  ❝ what do you want to order. ❞

     ONE WOULD think that the last few years -- certainly the kind of years that someone like 683 has lived -- would leave some sort of lasting impression on his face.  Lines around the mouth, a sunken quality to the eyes, any sort of indication to the passage of time and its inevitable effects, but 683 seems no different than he did half a decade earlier, crowned with the same electric-cherry crop of red and an uneven stare with that two-toned, freaky gaze.  He has retained his slouch, once a conscientious sign of shyness that has since remained as a disfigurement; like evolution in reverse, what so boldly climbed out of the precambrian seas and rose to the towering, glamorous heights of stardom has reverted back to something humbler, something smaller, something ordinary, as ordinary as someone -- something -- like 683 can be.  

     HE GIVES a brief nod to the doorman who so kindly showed him to James’s room.  It’s a nice place, the Hotel Chelsea, and he’s been here before, merely another musician to add to its litany of famous clientele: he thought he’d come here, again and again and again, and while grateful to revisit, he doesn’t think he particularly misses it. 

     ❝ IT’S VERY nice to see you, ❞ he says earnestly, and he manages a tight-lipped smile.  He hesitantly takes a seat on the overstuffed couch opposite of James, the coffee table and its bottle-stacked surface standing stalwart between them.  ❝ I stayed here once, just last year.  I had a lovely time.  The service, the food, the everything.  I, ah, ❞ and he gives a tepid grin, shrinking slightly in burgeoning shame, ❝ threw a lamp over the balcony.  One of those nights. ❞
