Kedartal Trek – A Journey to Shiva’s Lake
Introduction
Trekking is more than a physical challenge; it’s a transformative experience that liberates you from the constraints of everyday life, injecting vitality and renewal. Whether it’s scaling mountains, navigating rivers, or embarking on an exploration of new lands and cultures, adventure comes in many forms. For those seeking vibrancy and excitement, trekking becomes a way of life, a pursuit of the extraordinary. Kedartal Trek, often referred to as “Shiva’s Lake,” stands as a testament to the allure of adventure, promising not just a trek but a profound metamorphosis.
The Enigmatic Kedartal Trek
Situated at a breathtaking altitude of 16,115 feet in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Kedartal is a glacial lake formed by the melting Kedar glacier. The resulting Kedar Ganga river, a significant tributary of the Bhagirathi river, adds to the mystical aura surrounding this pristine waterbody. Encircled by majestic peaks like Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, and Jogin 1 and 2, Kedartal offers a challenging yet rewarding trekking experience.
The Trekking Odyssey
The 18-kilometer trek from Gangotri to Kedartal is no easy feat, demanding prior trekking experience due to its moderately difficult terrains. Renowned for its stunning views of snow-clad peaks, lush green valleys, and cascading waterfalls, the Kedartal trek stands as one of Uttarakhand’s most sought-after and rewarding journeys. The trek, not for the faint-hearted, promises an encounter with diverse wildlife, including the elusive Blue Sheep, Goral, and even the Himalayan Black Bear.
Tumblr media
Kedartal’s Natural Symphony
The enchanting Kedartal is flanked by Thalay Sagar and Bhrigupanth peaks, offering a mesmerizing reflection of Thalay Sagar on its crystal-clear waters. The trek’s diversity unfolds as you ascend through splendid pine forests, traverse high-altitude pastures, and witness the grandeur of the mountains that guard this pristine landscape. Blue sheep, or bharals, are a common sight, adding to the trek’s allure.
The Kedartal Trek: A Physical and Spiritual Challenge
Undoubtedly, the Kedartal trek is not for everyone. Its challenging nature demands a considerable level of fitness. However, what it gives in return is a truly supernatural trekking experience. The journey culminates at the glacial Kedartal lake, where trekkers are rewarded with close-up views of towering peaks like Mt Thalaysagar, Mt Bhrigupanth, Manda Parvat, Mt Jogin, and Mt Gangotri.
Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Reach Gangotri (10,055 ft.)
The journey commences in Gangotri, the base camp for the Kedartal trek. After a scenic 242 km drive from Dehradun, participants arrive in Gangotri, surrounded by deodar and pine forests. A visit to the Holy Gangotri Devi temple sets the spiritual tone for the trek, followed by team introductions and a briefing about the upcoming adventure.
Day 2: Gangotri to Bhoj Kharak (12,402 ft. appx)
The trek officially begins, with a 5-6 hour ascent to Bhoj Kharak. The trail, flanked by Fir and Birch trees, offers glimpses of stunning waterfalls, making it a challenging yet visually rewarding experience. Bhoj Kharak is reached, and participants set up camp amidst the natural beauty, capturing moments of the narrow gorge and the gushing Kedar Ganga.
Day 3: Bhoj Kharak to Kedar Kharak (14,000 ft. appx)
The trek continues to Kedar Kharak, marked by a steep climb through the Bhoja Patra forests. The ascent is relatively simpler than the previous day’s, revealing beautiful meadows and a grandstand view of the Bhrigupanth peak. Fauna enthusiasts may spot Blue Sheep, Goral, and Himalayan Black Bear during this leg of the journey.
Day 4: Kedar Kharak to Kedartal (16,116 ft.) & Back
The pinnacle of the trek unfolds as participants embark on the final push towards the captivating Kedartal Lake. A strenuous 8-hour trek takes trekkers through Rocky Mountains, devoid of greenery, culminating in the sight of the famed Kedartal. The reflections of Thalay Sagar peak on the lake, especially during sunset, create a breath-taking panorama. After soaking in the beauty, participants descend to Kedar Kharak for the night.
Day 5: Kedar Kharak to Gang
The final descent to Gangotri begins, retracing the route taken earlier. The 8-hour trek takes participants back to Gangotri, where they can witness the famous Ganga Aarti at the Holy Gangotri Devi Temple. The day concludes with exploration and relaxation in the serene surroundings.
Day 6: Drive to Dehradun from Gangotri

Nimalan is a hardcore trekker and traveler. The biggest bucket list in his life was to become a professional mountaineer. He has climbed almost all the trekkable peaks in South India. He covered the entire Western Ghats during his travel and trekking. Since the highest peak in the Western Ghats is just 2695 meters, none of these climbs was a challenge for Nimalan. He wanted to summit more challenging high-altitude mountains, and after some research, he decided to go for the Himalayan peaks. As a big fan of Reinhold Messner, a legendary mountaineer, he wanted to do the climb independently, carrying own food, tents, and without a guide – Alpine style, since that is more like testing himself. The search for the trekkable mountain for beginners ended up with Stok Kangri and Kang Yatse 2.
