The water of the lake shines in sunlight during the day giving it a silver effect. And on moonlight nights, the view of the lake and its surrounding is enough to make your mind crazy. As said by the local people, the lake and its adjoining area is also known as tiny Kovalam. The lake is mostly visited during the festival of Onam when the boat race takes place. This major holy festival is famous all over the southern India and attracts lots of tourists during this time. There are three fresh water lakes in Kerala among which the Vellayani Lake is one. There is a beautiful story regarding the creation of the lake in that place. It is believed that once a beggar was thirsty and was wondering in search of water. And then he came across a saint in that place who was seen meditating. The beggar asked for water from him but the there was only a few drops of water in his place. And then he threw that few drops of water on the ground uttering some magical words. As a boon those few drops of water changed into a big lake named as Vellayani.

The lake is located 7 km away from Kovalam if you go via the route of Poonkulam junction. At Thampanoor, the Thiruvanathapuram Central Bus Stand is just at a distance of 9 km from the lake. There are many buses that are available from East Fort city deport. Also boat services are available from Kovalam to the lake. You can also reach there by your own cab from anywhere of the city.

There is no entry fee to visit the lake.  It can be visited at any time of the day but the lake can be felt best during the morning and evening. Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is the main attraction of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. The place is in Nedumangad taluk, about 40 km from Thiruvananthapuram city. It is easily accessible from Vithura on Thiruvananthapuram- Ponmudi road. Spread over an area of 53 sq km, the sanctuary is a home to varieties of wild animals and natural vegetation. Peppara dam constructed across Karamana river and commissioned during 1983 to augment drinking water supply to Thiruvananthapuram city and suburban areas. The catchment area of the dam forms the forests of Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary. Elephant, gaur, sambar, barking Deer, wild boar, tiger, panther, wild dog, Malabar squirrel, lion-tailed macaque, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur, king cobra, python, darter, little cormorant, pied kingfisher and egret are the main attractions of Peppara. A variety of moths and butterflies are also found here.The sanctuary has extensive natural vegetation ranging from sub tropical forests to tropical evergreen forests.
