Are you brave enough to scale the heights? ‘The Heights’ by Louise Candlish – a review
Louise Candlish has done it yet again with The Heights.  The only way is up for this storyteller supreme! Having been mightily impressed by Louise Candlish’s last three novels (The Other Passenger, Those People and Our House), it was always going to be intriguing to read her next offering.  With The Heights, we get possibly her greatest piece of work to date. For anybody who has not read…

Shoalhaven Emphatic Victory Over Avondale
By Ron Wood
Shoalhaven have issued an emphatic challenge to all their rivals for the IDRU Premiership title in an amazing all round performance against Avondale at Shoalhaven Rugby Park. In a game that remained scoreless for the first twenty odd minutes, the Shoalies exploded on the back of the incredible attacking talents of the Brandon Brothers to register a 49 – 5 win over Avondale.
With six rounds completed in the disrupted 2022 season, Shoalies sit at the top of the table unbeaten on the back of their eighteen match, two year winning streak. With a points differential of plus 175, the Shoalies are currently conceding just over 6 points a match on the back of their outstanding defensive structure. Throw in the freakish attacking skills of the Brandon brothers and Shoalhaven seem destined to figure prominently in the end of season matches.
In a solid early contest on Shoalies home ground the match was closely contested until the Brandon’s put on four incredible tries in the lead up to the break. Wingers Keiran and Mark scored twice each in conjunction with fullback brother Steven, playing havoc with the Avondale defense. Mark added four conversions for Shoalhaven to take a 28 – 0 lead into the halftime break.
Ten minutes into the second term Steven and Keiran combined down the western touchline with an exchange of passes resulting in Steven scoring on the left. Another conversion from Mark and the Shoalies were out to a 35 – 0 lead.
To their credit Avondale came out swinging putting plenty of pressure on the unflinching Shoalhaven defensive line. As it has been all season the Shoalies defense was up to the task conceding just one try to Avondale wingman Jesse Lang. With the hard running Avondale forwards putting plenty of questions to the Shoalies defense the breakthrough came at the sixty minute mark. Big No.8 Othello Heka Tera took play to within centre meters of the home side’s line. With big prop Tavite Amone running wide from the ruck, Leng, running off Amone, was able to score in the corner for the Wombats only score of the match.
Avondale continued to raid away but the Shoalies defense held strong on the back of unflinching work from their entire forward pack. Shoalhaven were once again led by Will Miller who took the three points in the IDRU Player of the Year Award. The Shoalies dogged work in defense and at the breakdown frustrated the best Avondale could muster throughout the match eventually taking its toll in the dying stages of the match.
With Avondales effort falling away under the pressure, George Miller made a strong run from twenty meters out to score a converted try for a 42 – 5 lead. With fulltime imminent Keiran Brandon completed the try scoring with a fifty meter runaway try after swooping on a loose Avondale pass.
In an outstanding team effort Will Miller’s contribution to the performance was not only physical but inspirational as well keeping his side’s minds on the job before he took an early exit from the match. Front Rower Alex Wilson put in a huge effort with great support from his backrowers Michael Raftery, Duncan Maddinson and No.8 George Miller. Busy Halfback Connor Trudgeon, who took two points in the IDRU Player Award, had a field day playing off the back of the dominant forward pack, with Fly Half Harry Hibbs and center Jack Watts giving the Brandon brothers plenty of opportunity to run the ball and do their thing in attack.
What can you say about the Brandon brothers? They thoroughly entertained the big parochial Shoalhaven crowd with their uncanny attacking ability. The whole side’s effort in defense and again at the breakdown laid the foundation for what the Brandon Brothers did and all the signs suggest that there is still more to come from the competition leaders.
Despite the unflattering score-line the Wombats effort was not without merit. Front Row brothers Anthony and Tavite Amone never flinched in taking the ball forward with back rowers Tuu Taanoa, Michael Malaki and No.8 Othello Heka Tera working well throughout. The effort of light weight Lock Jiah McKinnirey  was rewarded with one point in the IDRU Player Award. Wombat centers Andre Itula and Nua Alone put in plenty of effort but were overshadowed by the Shoalies defensive effort on the day.

"Just stop it", "Noooo", "Ridiculous" - Lots of Newcastle fans react as transfer report emerges
As Newcastle United’s prospective takeover edges closer and closer to completion, the number of audacious transfer rumours linking the club to an elite string of players increases.
This week has been no different with the Magpies being mooted with a move for Barcelona duo Philippe Coutinho and Carles Alena, according to Marca.
Cameo Clubs: Which obscure teams did these football legends play for?
World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%
Both players are currently out on loan, the former Liverpool star is at Bayern Munich whilst the young Spaniard has been impressing at Real Betis.
Alena, a product of the La Masia academy, has played 13 times this term, including one appearance in the Champions League where he played the full 90 minutes against Inter Milan, recording four key passes, three dribbles and a 85.1% passing success rate, via WhoScored.
While Coutinho has found the net nine times and also provided eight assists in 32 appearances for the Bundesliga champions this season.
Although, many at St James’ Park only have one thing on their mind – the takeover being complete.
Here’s what has been said…
takeover needs to happen first

With Ashley as owner we aren’t signing anyone!
— Robbo (@Robbo_the_rhino) May 4, 2020
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here but Alena is quality
— Shaun Dinning (@shaundinning) May 4, 2020
Just stop it. Stop repeating fabricated & speculative nonsense. You make the rest of us look bad & it plays to the ‘deluded’ narrative of the media & fans of other clubs.
— Chris Watts (@ChrisWatts29) May 4, 2020
The Spanish market is definitely something we should look into. Need no introduction to Coutinho, but I’ve heard Alena is a very good player with lots of potential too! https://t.co/yuVwhHVE5D
— Callum Irving (@NUFCIrving1010) May 4, 2020
Ridiculous stories like this really WILL haunt us if the takeover doesn’t happen rival fans will feed off it for years
— Mark Hardy (@markhardy9999) May 4, 2020
Noooo
— Daniel Graham (@dangraham9) May 4, 2020
AND in other news, Newcastle swooping for this PL FLOP would be so foolish…

Shoalhaven Move To The Top Of The Table
By Ron Wood
Despite going into their Round 8 IDRU Premiership match with up to six top grade players unavailable Shoalhaven have prevailed 29 – 22 over Avondale to rise to the top of the Competition Table. With Campbelltown going down heavily to Bowral the still unbeaten Shoalies now move into first spot on the ladder with a match in hand.
Avondale were in a commanding position midway through the second term leading 22 – 10 having scored four tries to two. It appeared at this point that the John Haine Challenge Shield, The Peter Woods Challenge Shield and the competition points would all be heading back up the Princes Highway to Dapto.
In a six minute period the Shoalies put on three tries to take a seven point lead into the final fifteen minutes of the match. In a nail biting final period of the game the Shoalhaven defensive line stood firm to deny the Wombats and continue their unbeaten season record with both Challenge Shields now to be housed in Shoalies South Nowra Headquarters.
The match didn’t start well for the Wombats with Flanker Othello Heka getting a Yellow Car after just 2 minutes of play. Both teams managed to score tries during the suspension period, the first to Shoalhaven when Mark Brandon threw a long cut out pass for in form wingman Jimmy Hendrix to cross for the opening try. Within three minutes Avondale responded through No.8 Tuu Taiti-Taanoa when the big Forward forced his way over from the back of a ten meter scrum.
Mark Brandon and Jimmy Hendrix combined again to score when Brandon cleverly kicked across field for Hendrix to take the ball on the full and scored wide out for a 10 – 5 lead with twenty minutes gone.
As the half progressed the Avondale forwards were getting on top of their opponents and dictating the trend of the game with their dangerous backline stars throwing plenty at the home side. Tries had to come through weight of possession and a slight advantage at the scrum and breakdown to the visitors.
Wombat winger Raymond Taumalolo scored after showing a sound knowledge of the Laws of the Game. Taumalolo made a strong run at the line only to be tackled within meters of the stripe. He quickly released the ball and regained his feet before a ruck could be formed, regathered the ball and carried a couple of defenders over the line to register a try. The try was converted by Hooker Junz Leota for a 12 – 10 lead and within minutes Taanoa forced his way over the line from close range for his second try. Unconverted the try established a 17 – 10 lead for Avondale which they took to the break.
The Wombats continued their dominance into the second half with the fleet footed Joshua King streaking away for a try after five minutes for a 22 – 10 lead. The next twenty minutes was a hard slog as both sides showed plenty of vigor and resolve with the physical exchanges keeping a healthy crowd very entertained.
The last twenty minutes of play however belonged to Shoalhaven. The clubs player depth was put to the test with first choice players like Steven Brandon, Will Miller, Tom Connor and Thomas Hill missing from the squad. Veteran replacement Halfback Sam Watts, who was around when the Shoalies won the 2008 Grand Final over Avondale, joined the game at half-time with Argentinian No.9 Nicholas Redolatti moving into the forwards. Watts and the other bench players were instrumental in raising the required effort for the home side to pull off a memorable win for the club.
With twenty minutes left on the clock the match took a turn to the Shoalies. Winger Jimmy Hendrix sprinted clear down the right side to score his third try and improved the position for Kieran Brandon to convert. Three minutes later Brandon scored and converted himself after one of Shoalhaven’s best Fly Half Harry Hibbs, broke clear near halfway, setting Brandon away on a run to score under the posts. The two converted tries gave Shoalhaven a 24 - 22 lead but there was still fifteen minutes to play.
Outstanding No.8 George Miller crossed some three minutes later for what was to be the winning try. Kieran Brandon got involved again putting in a deft kick which took play to within meters of the Wombat line. After a scramble for possession Miller forced his way over to extend the lead to seven. Shoalhaven kept their composure better in the final enthralling minutes of the game to deny the best that the Wombats could muster.
Avondale were well served by Lock Emmanual Maliko who took two points in the Illawarra Player of the Year Award, along with Anthony Amone, Tuu Taiti-Taanoa, Kyle Moody and hooker Junz Leota up front. Andre Itula was a constant threat throughout in attack with Antonio Ale, Josh King and Nua Alone keeping the Shoalies defense occupied.
Harry Hibbs continued his outstanding season form for the home side taking maximum points in the Player of the Year Award. Front Rower Will Ridley, who toiled throughout against his bigger opponents was rewarded with one point in the award. George Miller and Michael Raftery were also strong in the forwards with three try hero Jimmy Hendrix, Keiran and Mark Brandon along with David Priestman making solid contributions in the backs.
Shoalhaven now hold a two point lead on 33 at the top of the table with Campbelltown on 31 and Shamrocks third on 30 points, with Avondale dropping to fourth on 28 after two losses on the trot.
Shoalhaven 29 (Jimmy Hendrix 3 tries, George Miller 1 try, Keiran Brandon 1 try, 2 goals)

Camden Retains Competition Lead
Camden Rams have maintained their share of the lead of the IDRU Builders Club Premiership with a 34 – 12 Round 2 win over Shoalhaven. The Rams dominated the match on the back of a strong forward game, playing very direct constantly putting the Shoalies on the back foot throughout. Had it not been for the abundance of penalties in the match the margin could have been much larger.
Camden has shown in the opening two weeks of the competition that they will be a different proposition this season under new Head Coach Doug Ryan. Running in five tries to two, on the back of a strong and well organized defensive effort, the Rams now sit on top of the table with ten points along with defending Premiers Bowral.
The first fifteen minutes of the match was punctuated with eight penalties as both sides struggled to get into any rhythm. Rams Fly-Half Michael Midson swooped on a loose ball twenty out from Shoalies line finding his wingman Jalesi Naivalu who crossed for the opening try. Five minutes later the Brandon brothers combined to produce one of their specials to open the Shoalies account. Fullback Steven broke clear inside his own half and with a swerving run booted clear into Camden’s half. Brother Keiran came from the right wing in support taking the inside pass to sprint away and score beside the posts. Keiran converted the try for the Shoalies to take the lead for the only time in the match, 7 – 5 after twenty minutes.
The Shoalhaven lead was short lived, with one of Camden’s best on the day Captain and Prop Jai Gunton, producing a rampaging run from fifteen meters out to score next for the Rams. Dane Kelly converted for Camden to lead 12 – 7. Frustratingly the final fifteen minutes of the half was once again dominated by penalties. On the stroke of half-time Kelly kicked a penalty goal for the Rams to take a 15 – 7 lead into the break.
The second term was barely a minute old when Camden added to their score-line. From the kick-off the Rams put on a six phase drive from deep in their own half and were soon pressing the Shoalies line. With the Shoalies defense struggling to stem the flow, Rams Half-back Terry Fanaula darted through from the side of a ruck to score their third try. Kelly missed the conversion for the Rams to lead 20 – 7 with half the match remaining.
Shoalies Brandon  Wright caught the Rams defense napping when he broke free from a maul close to the Camden line and crossed virtually untouched to get his side back within eight of the lead after forty-five minutes. It was just about all the Shoalies could muster for the rest of the match. With Steven Brandon not returning to the field after the break the Shoalies attack lacked spark and combined with a very well organized Rams defense the remainder of the match belonged to home side.
Winger Joseph Tildsley crossed for the home side on the back of a strong backline play instigated by classy Fly-Half Midson. Kelly converted from touch for a 27 – 12 lead after fifty minutes. Once again penalties dominated the next fifteen minutes before Camden No.8 Josh Institoris scored what was the try of the match inside the last five minutes of the game. Fly-half Midson pushed through the Shoalies line and found big Second Rower James Walgers running at an angle just into the Shoalhaven half. Walgers charged up field drawing the remaining Shoalhaven defenders before putting No. 8 Institoris away for the try. Dane Kelly’s conversion brought up the final score.
It was a strong performance from the Rams which pleased the new look Camden coaching staff. However the next three weeks will be at test for Camden with matches coming up against last year’s top four sides Vikings, Avondale and University.
Rams Captain Jai Gunton deservedly took three points in the IDRU Player of the Year award, leading from the front all day. His Locks James Walgers and Sean O’Flynn were strong with No.8 Institoris prominent. Halves Fanaula and Midson were instrumental in the Camden attack while Elijah Sa was outstanding in both attack and defense with the big center making some crunching tackles. Fullback Kane Morgan and center Kelly were classy.
Shoalhaven struggled to maintain any real pressure on the Rams throughout the match, despite energetic performances from Aaron Loudon and Tom Horton in the forwards and a busy Sam Watts, Angus Maddinson and Keiran Brandon in the backs.
Camden 34 (Jalesi Nauvalu 1 try, Jai Gunton 1 try, Terry Fanaula 1 try, Joseph Tildsley 1 try, Josh Institoris 1 try, Dane Kelly 3 goals, 1 penalty Goal)
Def Shoalhaven 12 (Brandon Wright 1 try, Keiran Brandon 1 try, 1 goal)
