3 steps to fix a car key remote not working
If you are like me, let’s face this head-on. We do not, yes, do not indeed give this devil its due! I am talking about the ever loyal car key remote which helps us open and close our car doors as effortlessly as ever. Because of which we no longer have to struggle into handbags or purses to dig out that ever elusive car key as we are laden with packages or a tiny tot.
However, even a loyal car key remote can have a bad remote day, leaving us in the lurch. But before you tear your hair out and get irritable (remember, you underestimated its value in the first place!) try fixing the non-working remote car keys from your end, before rushing to a car dealer for a key fob repair. If your car is under warranty, the car dealer will swap or patch-up your remote for no cost.
Often though, you can revive your remote at home. By replacing the battery and a little reprogramming.
3 Steps to getting your remote reworking again
1-Perhaps a remote timer issue?
The timer could be the culprit in putting off your remote. So, check for this first. Drive the car for some 20 to 25 minutes which should be sufficient (no time limit, here!) and then using the remote see if you can work your remote to lock and unlock the door, now! If you are successful, then you know it is a timer setting issue and nothing else to worry about.
2-A reset may do the trick
If the previous step failed, go ahead and try resetting your remote. All you need to do is press down the “Open” and the “Lock” buttons on your remote simultaneously. If your car lights get on and off or your horn beeps like in some cars, you have resolved the remote key repair issue at this stage
3-Likely to be a battery issue
If you have still been unsuccessful, you need to test the battery. Simply change it. To make it easy to access the battery, slide a dime into the groove between the two case halves, if present, and twist. Some remotes have a small screw or sliding cover on the back so you can easily remove the battery. Once the battery is taken out, insert the new battery. Do this while seated in the car, so that you can then quickly restart and shut down the engine, eight times in under 10 seconds. Then leave the car on. Press any button on the remote, for a second, to synchronize the remote. To check if your remote will now open and shut the doors for you, get out of your car and test the remote. If this step too has failed to revive your remote, seek assistance for a dealer.   You may need replacement car key.
