Khymera - Hold Your Ground

"Hold Your Ground" is the latest release from Dennis Ward (pictured above) and Khymera. As expected, it's another fine slice of high pedigree melodic rock.

Dennis handles lead vocals, bass, and keyboards and is joined by guitarist Michael Klein, keyboardist Eric Ragno, and drummer MIchael Kolar, with Pete Newdeck contributing backing vocals.

Khymera has in fact built its reputation as one of the best examples of what great European melodic rock is all about. It has crystal clear production, soaring vocals, killer musicianship, and songwriting that reminds fans of the heydays of the genre.

Khymera started out as an alliance between Italian producer/musician Daniele Liverani and then Kansas singer Steve Walsh. But it developed into a regular musical project when bassist and producer Dennis Ward (Magnum, Pink Cream 69) entered the fold. Known as a bassist, Dennis has always sang background vocals with his bands, so he was more than ready and willing to take over the lead vocals for Khymera when the opportunity presented itself.

Dennis took a break from Khymera in 2008 but returned in 2015 for the album "The Grand Design". Their recent album "Master Of Illusions" whcih came out in 202 followed the logical progression of the musical path that was started when Dennis joined the project. It was a strong, extremely melodic release, showcasing the fantastic vocal abilities of Dennis and skills as a songwriter and producer.

Mercifully, the wait between albums has been a bit shorter this time. "Hold Your Ground" is an absolute tour de force of fantastic melodic rock.

I thought that Jae's revenge porn whatever that stunt was was going to be it, but no. She's so damn extra, essentially peeing on the romanced rogue trader in public over and over. And like, Ignatius... is just "mhm, can you not though? :I" which I'm sure doesn't help. It also doesn't help that he's got a thing going with Cassia on the side. At least neither of them need to know that he kissed Yrliet in his inner world and offended her deeply, which... fair.

More importantly, the little trip into the inner world answered a question I had about my massive bathtub/pool.

It's waist deep. This will be relevant for fic purposes later.

Despite running around with All Psykers All the Time in act 2, I left them all at home in act 3. I just wanted to suffer, I guess. Well. Well. Argenta has been abandoned in Commorragh as punishment for her past deeds, because there was no execute option. Too late did I remember The Bug.

The Bug that cost me Marazhai the first time around.

Well! As it turns out, having Ulfar on your team will trigger the "attempt to murder Marazhai the moment he steps into camp" scene anyway, and despite being kicked out Argenta turned up to fight the xenos (which, I mean, ok, I guess that checks out? But still?) so Marazhai has been recruited good and proper. But like, team?

You people are going to make my new boyfriend feel unwelcome.

Anyway, we made it back to the ship. Cue passionate kiss with Cassia and, err, being a bit too forward. She slapped Ignatius and dumped him. Fantastic, I thought. He absolutely deserves that, let's go with that ending to that little affair. Then the game bugged out and the next cutscene wouldn't start. I had to keep it in my pants and continue the relationship to be allowed to continue the game. Boo! Boo, I say!

And, hey, Steam? Quick word?

Let? Let the khymerae tear all the gladiators apart? We were all dying in there! I'm sorry that I upped the difficulty and left all the psykers at home but come on. You don't have to make me sound like a complete asshole - I was just mildly incompetent.

Tobenum

So I have this fantasy setting that is your standard “Kitchen Sink Fantasy” world. Well, maybe not standard exactly, but many of the typical modern D&D/Tolkien-esque species like elves and dwarves are in it, just in rather different forms than usual. I had so many different ideas that I didn’t think would fit in other settings I made up, so I threw them all in their own world and called it a day. The name Tobenum itself is a warping of To Be Named. You know, the Dragon Age method of world naming.

Anyway, a lot of the posts I make on this blog may be related to this world, so I thought I’d explain a few things I’ve figured out about it so far, and some things I’ll make up as I go. This post might go a little long, so keep reading if you’d like to hear the general beats of this setting.

First, there are at least two or maybe three known continents on Tobenum. The one- no, actually two (I’ve decided just now) continents most of civilization lives on are interconnected with an isthmus and a few islands, while the third is off to the west and whose existence was only “discovered (as much as any landmass with multiple thriving populations can be discovered)” relatively recently— about 50 or so years ago. The northern of the connected continents is called Granop, the southern is called Takolas, and the newly known western continent is called Khymera. Granop is the typical European styled medieval fantasy land, Takolas is a hot, hostile land with savannah cradling an arid desert. Khymera is easily the largest continent on Tobenum and is mostly temperate forest and grassy plains in the north and humid rainforest in the south, with hot shrublands and mesas between.

Instead of using “race” to refer to all the various peoples as if they aren’t different species entirely, the term for any sapient species on Tobenum that has a semblance of language and civilization is “Vocal Kind.” The capital letters are important— a parrot can be vocal, but it is not Vocal. A rat is a kind of rodent, but is not a Kind. I’ll try to go into each of the Kinds in their own post eventually, but my current list is something like this:

Humans (All over the place and have a bit of a reputation for bonding and mating with just about any other Vocal Kind)

Elphs (Elephant people who live in tree-cities where the line between civic construction and forestry is blurred beyond meaning. The elf equivalent of Tobenum)

Dwarves (Short reptilian people who live underground and take pride in their craftsmanship and history. Bearded dragons cosplaying as Tolkien dwarves)

Orcs (Tusked orca whale people who are the leading force in exploring and memorizing the world’s oceans)

Gobblins (Little green guys whose society practically runs on food)

Wyverns (The massive magical flying reptiles who hoard treasure and burninate the countryside— at least, before they settle down to run a bank or grocery store or something)

Wyvernborn (When a wyvern and a member of another Vocal Kind love each other very much- )

Trolls (Catfish people who are often found extorting people for access to bridges)

Domols (Flightless owl people who live in marvelous cities in the sky)

Venari (Lionfish humanoids who are making a concerning effort to conquer the surface world)

Mondodo (Secretive dodo monks/ninjas)

Zhee (Psychic bug people on Khymera)

Demons (Spiky theropod dinosaurs who heard buffalo the size of elephants on Khymera)

And yeah, that’s all I want to talk about for now. The creatures are what I’m really excited about, so I’ll probably be mostly making posts about them as I go into detail about Tobenum.

Drukhari Beast Pack

In the fifth edition of the 40k rules, Beastmasters/Beast Packs were pretty good. They had a LOT of potential for survivability and doing some serious damage. They got a bit of a nerf by sixth and seventh editions, and FAQ/Erratas which followd, but I’d already built my pack by then.

My five Beastmasters, I wanted different from Hellions. Also worth saying, I’m not a massive fan of the generic Beastmaster, especially as he doesn’t fit into my army. I’m going for a Kabal, so everything needs to look Kabalite.

So the torsos are Kabalite Warrior, and the legs are from Wychs (for the more dynamic poses). Arms come from Dark Elf Corsairs.

The skyboards I really wanted to look unique, so made them with the “floating tower” aesthetic of my Ravager. I used the rudder from Raiders/Ravagers, though to get them to work just right I had to use two rudders per boards, adding modelling putty between joins to smooth into one mass. Engine jets added with plasticard tubes.

The first addition to the pack was actually this Clawed Fiend. At the time there was no viable model, so I went with a Dark Elf Cold One. I added some extra straps, and a technological back-plate (where a rider could theoretically go) using loose spare parts from an Eldar War Walker.

Khymera were to be the main bulk of the unit, they’re invulnerable save being the main strength which gets the rest of the units power close enough to the enemy.

Not wanting random dribbling monsters, I decided to go with drones. Spiky drones.

Each “Khymera Drone” here was made using a collection of small christmas decorations. THe larger spikes are from a string of icicles, and smaller inner spikes from the cut up side of a small mdf christmas tree. These were held together with a metal washer on the top and bottom, with plasticard forming the top unit and sail fin.

Finally, the Razorwings. I didn’t want to go with flocks, and thought the idea of keeping them somewhat mechanical fit the Kabal a bit more.

The main bodies were built from a small collection of beads in different sizes, laced through with strong wire which flays out of the back as a tail. They connect to plasticard heads at the front, and a s few plastic spikes (cut from rods) were done down the spine.

The wings were the interesting part. Each “feather” you see was cut from 0.25mm plasticard, and then carefully layered and posed to spread out. Strong wire was bent into position along the top edges, and pinned into the fore beads of the torso.

And this resulted in the final Beast Pack.

Pen scribbles in anticipation for next quarter. That Goliath book was good.

And given that Goliaths can take their crocs at inception I'm very much looking forward to running Firebug as a ganger alongside juve-prospect Piper. They're going to be so happy. It will be interesting to see what kind of kit she can take.
