Kosciusko County, Indiana
Tumblr media
Located in Warsaw, Indiana, at the center of Kosciusko County—pronounced (kaa·see·aa·skow) is the remarkable Kosciusko County Courthouse. This architectural wonder, built between 1882 and 1884, is not only a symbol of historical importance but also a testament to the grandeur of Victorian Eclectic style. The courthouse was meticulously designed by the renowned architects Thomas J Tolan and Brentwood S Tolan from Fort Wayne.
As visitors approach from the south, they are greeted by a prominent entrance that extends from the main structure, featuring an elegantly arched portal on the first floor. The second level is enhanced by a portico, decorated with arched windows and a pediment, adding to the building's magnificence. The façade, made of limestone, is an artistic masterpiece, adorned with intricate details such as decorative scrolls, garlands, and classical columns that beautifully define the exterior. The building reaches its peak with a magnificent mansard roof, punctuated by large dormer windows that define the skyline. The crowning glory is an octagonal dome at the center of the roof, its silver-colored roof and clock standing as a beacon atop this architectural wonder.
The courthouse, established as the seat of justice for Kosciusko County in 1837, serves not only as a crucial legal center but also as an architectural jewel. It stands as a living tribute to the rich history and lasting legacy of the Indiana community it serves.
Historically, the construction of the courthouse began in 1881 and was completed in 1884. The cornerstone was laid on May 25, 1882. The total cost of the courthouse was $197,799.65, which by today's standards, was quite economical. The tower was built by Joseph Marshall, and all of the interior work was done by G. Hahne. The courthouse is the county’s best-known historical landmark, due to its central location within both Kosciusko County and its county seat, Warsaw. It serves as the center of Kosciusko County Government and is a fine example of the Second Empire architectural style.

Warsaw, IN
Warsaw is a city in and the county seat of Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. Warsaw has a population of 13,559 as of the 2010 U.S. Census.
Warsaw, named after the capital of Poland in tribute to Tadeusz Kościuszko, platted on October 21, 1836. Warsaw's post office was established in 1837.
Early Warsaw contained traders, trappers, and merchants supplying manufactured goods to area farmers. Because of the central location in the lake region, tourists soon began visiting Warsaw and eventually made permanent residences in the city, with industry soon following.
In March 1854, Warsaw became a town, and the initial census on February 2, 1854, showed a total of 752 residents in the town limits. The Pennsylvania Railroad (then known as the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railroad) reached Warsaw in November 1854. The Big Four Railroad (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, and St Louis) arrived in Warsaw in August 1870.
Gas lights were installed in August 1880. Telephone lines were strung in 1882, with Dr. Eggleston having the first phone. The waterworks were constructed in 1885. Gas was supplemented with electricity in 1897, but gas was still used in many homes until 1915.
In 1895, Revra DePuy founded DePuy Manufacturing in Warsaw to make wire mesh and wooden splints, becoming the world's first manufacturer of orthopedic appliances. In 1905, DePuy hired Justin Zimmer as a splint salesman. Zimmer broke away from DePuy in 1927 to start his own orthopedic company with Joe Ettinger in the basement of Ettinger. Warsaw is now known as the "orthopaedic capital of the world.
East Fort Wayne Street Historic District, Kosciusko County Jail, Warsaw Courthouse Square Historic District, Warsaw Cut Glass Company, and Justin Zimmer House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Warsaw is located at 41°14′26″N 85°50′49″W (41.240564, -85.847002) and occupies the area between Pike Lake, Hidden Lake and Center Lake (to the north) and Winona Lake (to the southeast). The Tippecanoe River passes through the West portion of Warsaw. U.S. Route 30 and Indiana State Road 15 both pass through town, while Indiana State Road 25 begins on West Market Street while traffic is routed to West Winona Avenue along with State Road 15 after US Route 30 bypassed the downtown area.
According to the 2010 census, Warsaw has a total area of 12.918 square miles (33.46 km2), of which 11.58 square miles (29.99 km2) (or 89.64%) is land and 1.338 square miles (3.47 km2) (or 10.36%) is water.

Paul Henry Gingerich and Colt Lundy
Paul Henry Gingerich was just12 when he helped his friend Colt Lundy, 15, murder his stepfather. Gingerich and Lundy were accused of firing two shots each into his stepfather Phil Danner's body.
After the killing, Gingerich, Lundy and a third boy quickly gathered up a few things, including Danner's wallet, a handgun and some marijuana a friend gave them, and jumped into Danner's car. They then headed west on a cross-country trip that ended when they were stopped by a police officer in Peru, Ill.
When asked why Lundy had wanted to kill his stepfather he said that he got along well enough with his stepfather — when Danner was sober. But when Danner drank whiskey and lapsed into one of his tirades, Lundy said, Danner would then become verbally and physically abusive toward him.
Eventually, all Lundy could think about was escaping. One day he took matters into his own hands, after conceiving a plot to kill his stepfather.
On the night of April 20, 2010, Lundy and Gingerich climbed through a window of Lundy's bedroom in his family's home in the Enchanted Hills neighborhood of Cromwell, Indiana, in Kosciusko County. They then grabbed two of the many guns Danner had stashed around the house and waited for him in the living room.
At first, they debated about whether they should go through with it. But as Danner, who was in another part of the house, got up and walked into the living room, he suddenly saw the two boys with guns pointed at him.
All he had time to say was "What the f---?" — according to Lundy's description in a court record — before each boy fired two bullets into his body, killing Danner instantly.
On April 29, 2010, Kosciusko County Superior Court Judge Duane Huffer moved Gingerich's case into (adult) criminal court, at the request of prosecutors. The next day Gingerich was charged with murder.
About six months later, both boys pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of conspiracy to commit murder and both were sentenced to serve 25 years in prison. While the murder of Danner was shocking for its brutality and callousness, some in the U.S. and abroad thought the sentences were too severe — especially given the ages of the defendants.
Gingerich was released from the Pendleton prison in March 2017, after nearly seven years behind bars. He was 19 at the time of his release and is 21 now. After his release, Gingerich began living with his mother, Nicole, in Fort Wayne, but he had to undergo 24-hour electronic monitoring with an ankle bracelet until July 2018, as well as close supervision by the court. He also took a job in a manufacturing facility.
In October 2018, Kosciusko County Judge David Cates heard the 23-year-old Lundy’s request for a sentence modification. Lundy had requested to serve the rest of his term on home detention, saying he had served his prison time, so far, without incident and had taken advantage of programs offered to him, including "obtaining a higher education degree." It was the second time Lundy had done so; an earlier request for a sentence reduction in 2016 had been rejected. But that time was different. Lundy was be allowed to finish his sentence out of prison starting March 15 of 2019, according to the Associated Press. He’s now on probation.

[Researching the brothers of Jesus] Snow day here in Northern Indiana. Working on the Carnival Sage graphic novel script. I’m researching the brothers of Jesus. James the Righteous (Probably author of James and leader of the Jerusalem Church) Joses, also called Joseph Simon (Eventual leader of the Jerusalem Church) Jude, also called Judas and Judah (Probably author of Jude. A twin? – I haven’t gone down that long Syrian road of research) Early church writings make research like this feel like searching for the holy grail. The problem is 1. The early church, even past Martin Luther, wanted to keep Mary’s perpetual virginity. 2. The blood family was a threat to Paul and Pauline Christianity. 3. These common names overlapped with disciple names!?! 4. And, most importantly the ancients loved legendary development, The church did this well into the medieval period, to every Bible story and personality. And, these stories did not stay on the margins, they were part of the art and liturgy of the church. I watched a sermon by John MacArthur discussing James. It was amazing, in 51 minutes, how little he addressed any real issues. Has anyone else studied the siblings (or if you are Catholic; the step-brothers, or cousins)? Yes, I bought Tabor and Eisenman’s books. Well, back to the drawing board.
