Nature or Nurture (It all runs in the family) - Six feet deep in the family tree
Summary: Tine thinks if you’re going to go swimming for the first time, might as well dive into the deep end. Bohn thinks his dad needs to realize that really only works for swimming and not with family dinners and very new boyfriends. Fortunately, Duen is pretty good at swimming.
------
After his last call with his fathers, Bohn had been leery of any new calls from them. A request for a family dinner was never an idle threat when it came from Tine Teepakorn. And it had been endorsed by Sarawat, so it was highly likely to happen. Bohn could only pray that his fathers would be busy with cases for several more weeks. Or at least until after he’d had his first proper kiss with Duen so if he ended up scared off, Bohn could have that one sweet memory.
To his luck, and misfortune, Bohn managed to get through the service trip, several bits of drama (Mild was still terrified for his life), his first real kiss with Duen (“Just one more!” Bohn begged but Duen firmly kept him at arm’s length in the tent; at least until Bohn feigned sleep and Duen pressed one more kiss to his lips and squealed as Bohn jumped him after that), and becoming Facebook official (Bohn saved a screenshot of the event post on his wall and set it as his lock screen).
That last bit had sealed the deal and Bohn found himself the subject of the call he had been dreading.
“Well, we simply must meet this Duen Krisada Duenhaw now,” Tine said with his most serious lawyer voice which was only a hair below the “Bohn I cannot believe you thought that was a good idea your papa and I didn’t raise you this way” voice. “Especially now that you’re official. You’ve never been official with anyone. It’s a special occasion.”
“But dad!”
“Bohn Sirikarnkul, don’t you take that tone of voice with me!” And there was the tone Bohn hated. Bohn scrunched up his face and Duen looked up from his textbooks to give Bohn a look of concern.
“I’ll tell you later,” Bohn mouthed to Duen before returning to his attempts to dissuade Tine. “Dad, really, we’re both busy studying for exams!”
“Your exams were done last week.”
“Duen has exams!”
“Does he? Well it’s a good thing we’re free in two weeks for a nice long weekend visit. That should be enough time for him to finish his exams, hmm?”
“Where’s papa? Put him on the phone!”
“Papa is in court and he already said to tell you, ‘There’s no way around it. Just say yes.’”
“That traitor.”
“Bohn!”
Bohn scrubbed at his face. Duen came over to rest a hand on his shoulder, clearly confused, but wanting to comfort Bohn. “Okay. See you in two weeks. Bye, dad.”
“Bye! I’ll clean up your room! Don’t worry, I won’t make you and Duen sleep in separate rooms. Your papa and I know better than to try.” The beep of the dial tone was a relief and Bohn collapsed into Duen’s side.
“What happened?” Duen scratched at Bohn’s scalp. “I thought it was just your dad.”
Bohn continued to nuzzle into Duen’s side and wrapped his arms around Duen’s waist. “What are you doing in two weeks?”
“Uhh… Nothing?”
“Great. Dad and papa want to meet you. Keep the weekend clear.”
“EH?! But-”
“And that was exactly the reaction I was afraid of.” Bohn tightened his hold on Duen. “I know it’s a bit… soon. But they’ve been insisting for a while.”
“How long is a while?”
“Since you agreed to be my boyfriend and I posted the picture of the rosemary.”
“Bohn!”
“Please come?” Bohn gave Duen his best puppy eyes which hardly ever worked, but Bohn had to try. “I know we’ve only been dating a month…”
Duen bit his lip. “It’s just your parents?”
“Yes. Just dad and papa.”
Duen blinked. “Wait. You’ve said that before.” Duen tilted his head. “Dad and papa? As in two dads?”
Bohn bit his lip. “Did… I forget to mention I’m adopted?”
Duen scratched his head. “Maybe you should start from the beginning…”
“Is this a dealbreaker?”
“Don’t be dumb.” Duen sat down and tucked Bohn’s head under his chin. “Why would it change anything?”
Bohn smiled into Duen’s collarbone. “So does this mean you’ll come?”
Duen sighed. “Yes, I’ll go.” Duen pinched Bohn’s cheek. “But you have to tell me about your dads first.”
Bohn curled up further into Duen. “Dad’s name is Tine Teepakorn. Papa’s name is Sarawat Guntithanon. Both of them got together their freshman year of college when dad was trying to get Uncle Green to stop hitting on him…”
“Uncle Green?!”
“Okay, okay, so stepping further back....”
------
A fortnight passed quickly under Bohn’s dread and Duen’s simple assertions that it couldn’t possibly be as bad as Bohn thought. Especially since his fathers were kind and supportive.
“At least if we have your parents on our side, then when you meet my dad, it might go easier,” Duen had said. Bohn had plastered himself to Duen’s side all night in alarm after that due to the nightmares that still flashed behind his eyelids whenever he closed them.
The day they were to depart, Duen got a ride from Bohn to the university and left his packed bags in Bohn’s car. Bohn picked Duen up after classes were over. They freshened up in Bohn’s apartment, and set off for the hour-long drive to Bohn’s home. The Teepakorn and Guntithanon household was simple, but stylish.
“Dad wouldn’t stand for anything less than a chic house,” Bohn explained as he pulled into the driveway. “Papa agreed if only to keep dad happy.”
The first warning light went off when Bohn noticed more cars in the driveway than normal. Bohn frowned as he parked his car and even Duen noticed.
“Do you guys really need so many cars?”
“Those… are not dad or papa’s cars.” Bohn raised an eyebrow. “That’s Uncle Mil’s car… And that one is Uncle Man’s car…”
“Uncle Mil? Uncle Man?” Duen turned to Bohn in alarm. “I thought you said it was just your parents!”
“I thought so too!” Both were brought out of their panic with a knock at the window. Bohn turned to find Sarawat’s slightly remorseful expression. “Papa? Why?!” Bohn asked as he lowered the window.
Sarawat sighed. “Your dad insisted. He said, ‘Go big or go home. Bohn’s bringing someone to meet us, so we might as well invite everyone.’”
“He said go home. We’re going home,” Bohn said as he moved to start the car again.
“Too late, he’s seen you’re here. Bring your bags in and get settled. Dinner is in thirty minutes.” Sarawat huffed and tousled Bohn’s hair. “Welcome home. At least your Uncle Dim and Uncle Green aren’t coming. Neither are Aunt Pear or Aunt Earn.” Sarawat’s mouth twisted and Bohn hated the mirth in it. “Uncle Boss might, though.”
“So you invited everyone that could make tonight hell and no one that could distract dad.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. I’m still here,” Sarawat huffed as Bohn and Duen got out of the car at last. “I can still drive your dad crazy.”
“Please don’t elaborate.” Bohn gestured to Sarawat. “Duen, my papa, Sarawat Guntithanon. He thinks he’s the voice of reason.”
“Hello, sir.” Duen wai’d with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Sarawat returned the wai before shrugging. “No need for sir. You can call me papa too.”
“Eh?! But-”
“Bohn’s never dared to bring anyone home. He knew something like this could happen.” Bohn nervously looked away as both Sarawat and Duen looked at him. “So the fact that he dared it today means you’re important. So call me papa and welcome to the family.”
“Oh! Uh… Thank you?”
“I hear Tine might want help in the kitchen and Bohn says you’re a good chef. Perhaps now is the time to make an impression on him.”
Duen looked at Bohn who continued to distract himself by pulling bags out of the car. “I guess I’ll go introduce myself then.”
------
After unpacking the car, greeting all his uncles, and downing a shot of liquor without everyone watching, Bohn made his way to the kitchen to find Duen pottering about as serenely as ever with Tine watching from the side.
“Wow, N’Duen, this is so impressive! You’re just as good in the kitchen as Bohn says you are!” Tine’s face was full of delight as he took in the work Duen had done to the dishes he’d started. “You even managed to fix the soup.”
Duen rubbed the back of his neck. “It wasn’t any trouble, really…”
Tine put an arm around Duen and jostled him. “Oh ho! And so sweet too!” Tine leaned in. “So tell me, is my ridiculous son treating you properly?”
“Well he-”
“Dad!” Bohn rushed in and tugged Duen away. “You’re going to traumatize him!”
“Don’t be silly, I wouldn’t do that,” Tine scoffed. “Now go introduce your boy to your uncles while I dish everything up.”
Bohn pulled Duen away and down a hallway where they wouldn’t be seen. “Are you okay?”
“You shouldn’t be so worried. Your dad was very nice.” Duen pat Bohn’s shoulder. “If… Well…”
“Oh no… What did dad ask?”
“Nothing important…” Duen’s face turned pink and that was the only hint Bohn needed. “Just calm down. Things are going fine. As long as your uncles are like your parents, I think we’ll be okay.”
“Uhh….”
“Uh?”
“Let’s start with Uncle Man and Uncle Type…”
------
Bohn fell into his bed with a groan. Duen closed the door and sat next to him petting his head.
“That wasn’t so bad.”
Bohn turned and cracked an eye open to stare at Duen. “Uncle Man gave us a bouquet of condoms. Just like he did to dad and papa before. Uncle Type told you about my first girlfriend. From grade school.”
“Well…”
“Uncle Mil told you the story of how I forgot Ben in a bathroom after changing his diaper once and Uncle Phukong told you about how he got revenge by almost breaking Uncle Mil’s knee.”
“I mean…” Bohn buried his face back in his pillow and Duen laid down and rested his chin on Bohn’s shoulder. “Okay so it was a lot.”
“Do you still love me?”
“Despite your family’s best attempts. Yes.” Duen kissed the shell of Bohn’s ear. “I promise I still love you.” Duen’s phone beeped with a text and Bohn moved to smother himself as Duen read it aloud. “From Papa: Boys, please remember that although the walls are sound-proof, we are home and going out tomorrow.” Duen bit his lip. “I see where you got your forwardness from.”
Bohn screamed into his pillow for a second before sitting up. “Screw it, if dad and papa are saying that then whatever!” Bohn turned to Duen and pounced.
“What? Bohn! Wait! Eep!”
