Week 10: Refinement, Co-Design, and Looking Ahead
Part I: The Experience
One significant breakthrough this week was in solidifying my confidence with NFC tag technology—not only as a trigger for digital storytelling, but as a design layer in its own right. I spent time re-engaging with NFC tag setup and mobile interaction workflows using apps like NFC Tools and TagWriter. I tested several tag types to understand durability, scanning speed, and placement sensitivity. This hands-on re-familiarisation process helped clarify how these tags can be used not just to deliver content, but to structure the emotional rhythm of the experience.
I began to see NFC tags as more than hardware—they are physical prompts that anchor memory, provoke curiosity, and reinforce the spatial relationship between story and land. This insight helped me think differently about the UI. Rather than building everything on the screen, I’m now designing for what happens just before and just after a tag is scanned—moments that live offscreen, but are still part of the system. For instance, I added animations and audio that fade in after a tag tap, and developed micro-interactions that give the user subtle feedback (such as vibration cues or fade transitions) to deepen the sensory engagement.
This week marked my final cycle of iteration before presentations and allowed me to integrate the feedback from Week 9 more fully. My core focus was refining the emotional clarity and cultural framing of Hīkoi Huna, while reflecting on the future direction of the project. With the major components in place—UI sketches, narrative scripting, NFC exploration—I shifted from experimentation to clarification. I aimed to move past surface polish and deepen my research while tightening the connection between design intention and user experience.
Goals for the Week
Refine and simplify user flow (fewer interaction types, smoother transitions)
Finalize layout logic for mobile and desktop views
Explore ways to co-design interface elements with community engagement in mind
Revisit toolkits: determine what software and skills I’ll need to deepen in Capstone
Begin assembling research-led provocations for user testing next semester
I began with a light UI polish—focusing on the landing screen. Based on Phoenix’s earlier suggestion about emotional onboarding, I created a simple splash screen offering a karakia and introduction to Hīkoi Huna. This screen uses animated elements and soft ambient audio as an optional welcome. I also began drafting a new section for the site history, integrating story fragments shared in peer critiques and insights from previous research into urban Māori storytelling methods.
In parallel, I returned to thinking about material interaction. Although I didn’t make new physical prototypes, I revised how NFC markers could be embedded intuitively within the environment using everyday objects (e.g., stone markers, carved bollards, mural touchpoints). This line of thinking sparked new speculative sketches.
Since I wasn’t aiming to build a full prototype this week, I concentrated on creating the clearest possible representations of the emotional, narrative, and spatial flows in my system. This included:
A revised script structure with more modular paths (inspired by Humayra’s suggestion to let users “follow emotion, not just location”)
Adding short reflection prompts at each site to enable gentle self-guided interaction
Marking NFC tag locations more clearly for mobile-first usability and low-light environments
Considering onboarding for non-digital-native users, including those with low vision or older demographics
Part II: Reflection on Action
The changes this week helped me see how I might approach Capstone as both a researcher and storyteller. I’m no longer just experimenting with technologies, but actively defining the values and frameworks through which I want to design. The feedback from peers reminded me to treat every screen as a point of relationship-building, not just information delivery.
Phoenix’s feedback encouraged me to consider the tone and first impression more deeply, leading to the karakia onboarding. Humayra’s input on modular narrative paths reminded me that agency doesn’t always mean options—it can also mean resonance, connection, and quietness. Their perspectives made me think more critically about subtle interaction and attention design.
I also realised I’m now ready to commit to deeper research. Instead of just playing with formats, I want to identify a few key questions and go deep—what does ethical digital storytelling look like in postcolonial spaces? How can interaction design serve cultural continuity without extractivism? To answer these, I’ll need to learn new tools (like Unity’s AR foundations and better audio integration) but also refine my user research methods and co-design facilitation practices.
Part III: Theory
This week I returned to Anne Galloway’s work on speculative design and indigenous innovation. Her emphasis on slowing down, listening, and crafting presence in digital space resonated with my goals for Hīkoi Huna. This aligned with Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s call for relational accountability, reminding me that design is never neutral.
I also explored UX case studies on cultural tourism and interpretive apps and found patterns in how they incorporate layered narrative, ambient guidance, and flexible pacing. Several of these emphasized design for drift—encouraging users to pause, wander, or reflect.
I’ve bookmarked frameworks from Ngā Aho and the Design for Aotearoa site to use as design ethics reference points, especially as I prepare for stakeholder engagement and co-design next semester.
Part IV: Preparation
I’m entering the final stretch ready to shift from exploration to focused design. I’ll be:
Synthesizing blog learnings into a Capstone framework
Building an annotated research map to track themes, technologies, and references
Identifying technical gaps in Unity, sound design, and co-design workflows
Planning a small co-design session with peers or community mentors to develop visual motifs or metaphor maps
I’m aiming to prototype less, but research more deeply. Hīkoi Huna is evolving not just as a product idea, but as a long-term question: how can I, as a designer, contribute meaningfully to digital placemaking in Aotearoa?

Lighting Stores Near Me: Your Guide to Brightening Up Your Home
Lighting is more than just a way to see in the dark—it’s the heartbeat of your home’s atmosphere. Whether you’re creating a cozy corner, setting the mood for a dinner party, or designing a statement entrance, the right lighting makes all the difference. If you’ve ever found yourself Googling “lighting stores near me”, you're already on the right path to elevating your space.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about choosing the best lighting for your home, what to look for in a good lighting store, and why My Design Angel should be your go-to destination for premium lighting online in India.
Why Lighting Matters in Home Design
Lighting isn't just functional—it's transformative. It affects how colors appear, how large or small a space feels, and even how we feel emotionally in a room. Poor lighting can make a beautifully designed room look dull, while great lighting can bring even the simplest design to life.
From ambient and task lighting to accent and decorative lighting, the perfect mix can change the entire mood of your home. That’s why finding the right lighting store near you is crucial.
What to Expect from a Good Lighting Store
When searching for “lighting stores near me,” you want more than just a place to buy bulbs. Here’s what you should look for:
1. Variety of Styles
A good lighting store should have everything from modern pendant lights and minimalist chandeliers to vintage lamps and artistic wall sconces. You want choices that suit your aesthetic—whether you love Scandinavian simplicity or luxurious opulence.

3. Expert Guidance
Great lighting stores have knowledgeable staff or detailed online resources to help you choose the right fixtures based on your room size, style, and lighting needs.
4. Customization Options
Sometimes, one size doesn’t fit all. The best stores provide customization in finishes, sizes, or bulb types to ensure the light you buy fits your unique space.
5. Online Shopping Experience
A modern lighting store should offer a seamless online shopping experience. Filters, 3D visuals, easy checkout, and safe shipping are now essential parts of the journey.

Gulhane Park / Türkiye
Gulhane Park Lighting Project was held by Turkish lighting company Light34 as a project partner. We designed the outdoor lighting project and our traditional garden lighting fixtures were applied to the landscape lighting application areas.
Gulhane Park is one of the oldest and most historical parks in Istanbul and has very important place in Turkish history. Gulhane Park is one of the ideal spots for you to rest under the centuries-old trees and read books, get away from the noise and crowds of the city and walk on the paths full of colorful flowers.
Gulhane Park, which is among the most beautiful parks of Istanbul, was first used as the outer garden of the palace during the Ottoman period. The fact that the tulips, various kinds of flowers and roses are located in the park has kept the name of Gülhane Park throughout history. The park, which has managed to preserve its richness since its past, is also known as Sarayburnu Park. It is located in Eminönü district of Fatih district and in 1912 it was removed from the palace garden and opened for public service.
Gülhane Park has witnessed many important events from a historical perspective with all its beauties. The Hagios Georgies Monastery and the Panagia Hodegetria Sacred Spring in the region made it valuable during the Byzantine period. At the same time, the 1839 Tanzimat Edict, one of the important developments in Ottoman history, was first read in Gülhane Park.
Ataturk's first statue erected in Turkey are located here. The statue was made by the Austrian Kripel and erected in 1926 where it is now. Moreover, in the ceremony held in Gulhane on November 24, 1928, Ataturk was given the title of “Head Teacher”. Ataturk introduced the Latin letters to the public on the blackboard he founded and gave his first lecture here.
Orion Series Garden Lighting Pole and Fixture, which has emerged from the combination of traditional design and elegant lines, has been preferred to be suitable for the historical atmosphere of Gulhane Park and to contribute to the integrity of the garden lighting application area. Outdoor lighting poles applied through the walkways which follows the park from begining to end. Lamp post body was made from aluminum and implemented special surface treatments to keep safe product from rust and other hamful effects of environment. HPS lamp option requested from our customer was implemented to products to illuminate urban area.
Orion Series Bollards is also requested to be the part of the landscape lighting project as the illuminate the side walkways and landscape area with led bulbs. Products painted white color to bring the sober and elegant athmosphere in achieving the goal of enhancing the architectural forms by means of comfortable scenic lighting, with great attention to environmental sustainability and environmental harmony.
The public lighting area was illuminated with our lighting poles which, service life is considerably longer than the industry standards. When redesigning the pedestrian zone and park lighting project of Gulhane Park, we benefited from the fact that the sophisticated and timeless design and extraordinary durability of the outdoor garden light pole luminaires.
The light34 lawn lights illuminate garden, walkways, landscape and also serve as entrance lighting. They not only ensure efficiently and significantly more cost-effective outdoor lighting project solutions but also fit in with the overriding aim of enhancing the potential of the night-time urban lighting and guaranteeing an even better lighting atmosphere. That is why we add the our path light model Orion Lawn Light to enrich the illuminance level and harmonize architectural elements in the park.
We reflected hospitality, functionality, serenity and refinement features with our traditional lighting fixtures which distinguish the project where, light emphasizes the perfection of nature, while at the same time, conferring a touch of contemporary feeling and definition.

When the sunlight sets and night falls, garden lighting plays a very important role in continuing to make the most of the space and creating the perfect atmosphere. You just have to understand the functions and purpose of each of the areas of this room, since in our online store you can buy all kinds of options to illuminate your garden and give life to this very special area of your house, where you like to spend so much time now that we are in summer.
Tips and ideas to light up your garden When it comes to buying the perfect lighting elements for outdoor spaces, not only is the visual result important, but also looking for efficient solutions that help you reduce your electricity consumption costs. Here are some tips and ideas for lighting your garden that we at Brico Depôt consider essential:
LED garden lighting LED garden lighting is undoubtedly one of the best options for lighting a garden because it combines weather resistance with low consumption and a long lifespan. In addition, there is a wide variety of options from which you can choose:
-LED bulbs equipped with a motion sensor: They save energy and provide security, as they turn on and off automatically when someone walks through the garden. -Outdoor LED wall lights: They can be placed on walls and it is always possible to find a style that matches that of our home: minimalist, classic, modern, industrial, vintage… -LED beacons: As we have previously mentioned, they can be placed on the ground to illuminate a garden, thus marking paths or notable elements.
Solar lighting Solar lighting solutions are perfect for avoiding wasting money on electricity bills. Thanks to modern technology, these ingenious devices capture solar energy during the day and store it in rechargeable batteries to light up your garden at night.
Our bollard lights are perfect for creating a row of solar lights along your main path, although you may prefer our floodlights for wider illumination.
Streetlights and parapets Who said that outdoor lighting can't be elegant? The street lamps and wall lights that we have at Brico Depôt are elements that provide a very distinctive touch to give your outdoor spaces a great personality.
These light structures, with their variety of classic and modern designs, will become the focal point of your night landscape while creating the perfect lighting ambiance in the darkness of the night.
Decorative lights But of course, in addition to standing out for its functional characteristics, it is important that when illuminating your garden you also take into account and think about the final finish you can achieve.
Imagine a garden dominated by a halo of sparkles that highlight some of the most representative elements of the room. The result you can achieve with our solar rocks, string lights, or hanging lanterns can make a significant difference.
Mosquito repellent lights And what about how annoying insects are in summer? Mosquitoes in particular are one of those that always bother us at night and we look for ways to avoid them.
Well, with our selection of lamps and candles, you will not only be able to get an element to illuminate your garden discreetly, but you will also put an end to their presence and be able to enjoy moments of total relaxation.
Lights with sensors The integration of technological facilities is essential to illuminate a modern garden, and you can achieve this with sensor lights, a smart and practical option that will help you save on energy consumption, as they will only be activated when they notice your presence.
Whether on paths, stairs, or entrances, these smart lights will guide you with precision, creating a welcoming and safe environment with every step you take.
What type of light is recommended for outdoors? 4 essential tips Advances in design and technology allow us to obtain magnificent results, without excessive complications in their installation and at an affordable price. Below, we are going to reveal the keys to take advantage of all these possibilities and manage to illuminate your garden to achieve a dream result that can be used both during the day and at night.
Take into account the style and characteristics of your garden Obviously, not all gardens are the same, and therefore yours should not be a simple clone of other installations you have seen before. It is important to study in detail what your space is like in terms of configuration, structure, and, above all, style. From there, lighting should be planned according to these characteristics.
Always choose quality products Unlike indoor lighting, outdoor lighting is exposed to all kinds of weather elements: extreme heat, intense cold, wind, rain, and maybe even snow, depending on the area you live in. This makes the quality of the products even more important.
It is therefore worth investing in quality, durable, and long-lasting items in order to avoid premature wear and, even more importantly, short circuits and other mishaps or accidents.
Lighting should adapt to your needs In general, it is important to illuminate your garden adequately so that you can enjoy it at night, but it is not a question of seeking homogeneity as in the interior of your house.
Our recommendation in this regard is to try to play with shadows and contrasts, illuminating the play areas or where you go out to dinner more intensely, leaving the quieter and less used corners in semi-darkness.
Another good idea is to use outdoor LED lighting systems, which project soft lighting to mark a path or some aspect that you want to highlight above the rest, such as a fountain, a pool, or a decorative element.
Take care of the details As with all elements of the home, taking into account the details is essential to achieve welcoming and truly unique spaces, where both we and our guests feel truly comfortable and have a satisfactory experience.
For example, a hanging lamp on the porch can be a key element to illuminate your garden and make you feel really good in this border space between the outside and the inside, thus giving life and dynamism to the space.
Another important aspect is the color of the light. While a pure white can be too cold, a sepia tone can look really fantastic.

Choose the Right Commercial Outdoor Lighting for Your Space

Investing in sustainability is a key consideration when it comes to commercial outdoor lighting. The choice of lighting system can have a significant impact on energy consumption and carbon emissions, making LED lighting an attractive option. LED lights are highly efficient, consuming less energy compared to traditional lighting solutions. This implies low bills on utility and a light environmental footprint.
Commercial outdoor lighting in Canada or anywhere in the world is more than a necessity to serve a basic purpose. It also acts as a mighty tool for the owners, developers, and owners of businesses to enhance the aesthetics, safety, and security of their spaces during night-time hours.
In this extensive guide, we'll take a closer look at commercial outdoor lighting and various types of fixtures that show the power of outdoor lighting.
Types of Commercial LED Outdoor Lighting
Flood Lights
The big powerful lights are designed to emit a broad and intense beam of light. It is thus aptly used in lighting up large areas such as facades, signage, and outdoor spaces. Besides, LED flood lights not only provide bright and high-quality light but also consume a considerably lesser amount of energy compared to traditional bulbs. This gives cost savings energy for commercial buildings.
Wall Lights
One of the most significant pluses of an outdoor wall light is its facility for bringing attention to specific architectural features. Combinations of different techniques in lighting control, such as uplighting or downlighting, create a great effect with wall lights. It also gives particular attention to designs, columns, moldings, and pathways in a commercial environment. Wall lights illuminate these beauties, which essentially add beauty to the commercial facility but enhance the entire aesthetic appeal as well.
Pole Lights
Pole lights are outdoor lighting fixtures. They are used for illuminating pathways and driveways in commercial properties. They are mounted on top of posts or poles, providing a convenient means of pointing out directionality to people through designated paths. Whether in the form of a walk leading up to a commercial building or a driveway within a commercial property, pole lights greatly improve visibility and safety.
Bollard Lights
Bollard lights are great lighting fixtures for walkways and outdoor spaces because of their modern aesthetics as well as their flexibility in use. It may be installed strategically at pathway levels where soft and warm illumination can be projected to direct pedestrians and ensure safe passage. Bollard lights can also call attention to any specific feature of the outdoor space, like plantings or architectural details.
Step Lights
Mainly, step lights have been used to avoid accidents as well as enhance the accessibility of raised spaces. Since illumination coming from step lights is concentrated in one area, it is ensured that every step is bright, thus making it easier for a person to move within that space without falling. This mainly relates to areas that are not brightly lit or even outdoors where a great amount of light is not fully emitted since the risk of slipping, tripping, and falling is reduced.
Canopy Lights
Canopy lights are lighting fixtures, installed over a covered area such as gas stations or parking lots. They are usually installed under an overhang or a canopy structure, thereby lighting effectively a particular area in which shadows may otherwise occur or might lack proper visibility.
Advantages of Using Commercial LED Outdoor Lights
Energy Efficiency
Led technology provides various energy-saving benefits to commercial outdoor lighting. LEDs are highly efficient in converting a significant amount of electrical energy into light while wasting minimal energy as heat. Businesses conserve significantly more energy and thus lower their utility bills by using LED-based commercial outdoor lighting systems.
Eco-Friendliness
Commercial lighting is revolutionized with the incorporation of eco-friendly and sustainable Canadian LED lighting company. LED lights provide an enormous reduction in carbon footprint, thereby reducing light pollution. Computation shows that LED lights usually require less energy for the same amount of light when compared to other common sources like fluorescent bulbs or metal halide bulbs, making them a more energy-efficient choice for use in commercial settings.
Versatility
The flexibility of the LED light allows it to be designed and adapted for specific needs and wants. These types of fixtures can easily be implemented and discreetly installed at any point within the commercial establishment, and this would make it flexible in design and placement. LED lights can be utilized in various ways; one is walkway lighting; another is an architectural feature or signage lighting and even security and safety lighting. With control over color temperature and lighting levels, various moods and ambiance can be created in outdoor spaces.
Conclusion
Commercial outdoor lighting in Canada is both a green necessity and a strategic opportunity. The property developer and the business owner have a chance to reduce environmental impact while capitalizing on many economic and societal benefits that pave the road forward for even more sustainable business practices. Sustainability is no longer an abstract concept or some indefinite goal. It is becoming an integral part of our current business landscape. A well-lit commercial space doesn't have to come at the cost of the environment. Smart, sustainable outdoor lighting strategies can bring much-needed vibrancy and appeal to your property and improve the visitor experience.

26/30 Critical Review
I am a firm believer that art has a purpose, one to evoke feelings, as well as having the power to generate discourse on a variety of subjects, whether the viewer is prompted to or not. The same can be said with everyday objects. It is safe to assume that even the most miniscule and disregarded objects can induce an emotion in a person and:
bring philosophy down to earth. When we focus on objects, physicians and philosophers, psychologists and designers, artists and engineers are able to find common ground in everyday experience (Turkle, 2007, p.08).
My Creative Enquiry module looks to investigate this common ground, through works that explore uncanny sensations, whilst utilising objects that, in my eyes, are alluring, and hold power. Philosopher Jane Bennett describes these objects perfectly in Vibrant Matter, they are, “vibratory - at one moment disclosing themselves as dead stuff and at the next as live presence: junk, then claimant; inert matter, then live wire.” (2010, p.05). Whilst walking, I often find myself gazing at the abundance of debris around me, in the hopes of finding something that elicits a feeling in me. These feelings are hard to explain; they are an excitement, an appreciation, a satisfaction. I keep walking, keep looking, rarely stumbling upon these objects. I am very particular. Sometimes I will pass rubbish, a discarded packet of crisps for example, and view it as just that, a discarded packet of crisps. Other times, the packet will speak to me, through its arrangement, its interactions with its surroundings, inciting feelings of satisfaction. These objects are either collected, if applicable, or recorded in a catalogue where they are captured through photography, in that given moment. I plan on displaying this catalogue, allowing viewers to come up with their own dialogues with these objects, just like I have.
My practice has stagnated of late; the objects I yearn for fail to appear, slowing down the making process and resulting in works that are not as successful. This gives me an opportunity to look back on the objects I never physically collected, the ones I only hold skewed memories of, prompting the memory series of works. The most memorable is the trilby hat I passed on the M8 on the bus for around two months. The hat was black and sat right next to the kerb of an overpass. I gained an attachment to this hat, purposely waiting to look at it for a split second from the window of the bus. One day however, it was gone. It might sound silly to be upset about the disappearance of a discarded object that I never owned, but I held a dialogue with the hat; there was an agreement between us, we would never cross paths. At times, I wanted to stop on the motorway in the early hours of the morning while traffic was scarce to pick the hat up. There was always a reluctance, perhaps for my safety, or for the fact that the hat would no longer be ‘the hat on the motorway’, but the dirty old hat I now had my hands on. On the other hand, a broken bollard from outside the college building, remained. As to not have events repeat themselves, I collected the bollard, not easily I want to add, and it will play a key role in my final submission.
As aforementioned, my wish is to incite uncanny sensations within my work, purposely exploring themes of the double. The double, deriving from Otto Rank’s ‘der doppelganger’, is a key component in uncanny theory, based on the unnatural phenomenon of witnessing one’s own replica (Barnstone, 2016, p.01). This has led to questions about whether all art, has a doubling effect. Philosopher Emmanuel Levinas believes art acts as a mimicry of its subject, a trace of a moment in time, whether physical, conceptual, or emotional (1989, pp. 137-138). This is an interesting stance to take, however one that makes a lot of sense. Art in its simplest form is a physical and indexical representation of the artists thoughts and actions at that given moment. This is uncanny as normally, we don’t have the ability to stop time. Emotive and alluring objects also have the ability to return a viewer, or owner of said object, back to a certain time, helping them relive past memories or emotions, as if they were happening for the first time.
Over the course of the academic year, I have been creating life-like casts and sculptural forms of my own body, I have a particular interest in the hand, with which I am able to generate uncanny sensations for myself, as well as hopefully the viewer. It is easy to get carried away trying to make something scary and/or abject; but that is not uncanny. Founding father of the theory, Ernst Jentsch (1906, p.08), defines the uncanny as a word used to describe feelings of unease, confusion, or feeling out of place due to something that is foreign to us. Psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud disagrees however, stating it revolves around something we are accustomed to, yet find alien in that given moment, a juxtaposition of emotion (1919,pp.01-02). Clearly, there is vast discourse on the exact definition of the uncanny, something that Freud himself mentions in his seminal text on the topic. What is clear however, is that the uncanny can be used as a tool to elicit strong emotions in a viewer. Practicing multi-media artist Natascha Diels sees the uncanny as a tool for exploiting and altering a person’s emotions (2014, p.75). She is not alone; many artists utilise feelings of discomfort in viewers, especially through the double, one of them being British sculptor Antony Gormley, a major influence for this modules outcomes. Gormley is known for his meticulous and intimate body casting technique of being tightly wrapped in cling film, then plaster covered scrim, to create his own doubles in masses (White Cube, n.d.). He describes this practice as “an embodied moment of human time captured in matter” (Gormley quoted by White Cube, n.d.). These works are displayed simultaneously as gallery pieces, and site-specific installations, like 6 Times, situated along the Water of Leith. When viewing these figures, it is easy to mistake them for real humans, but we are brought back to reality when realising they are ‘lifeless’. Casting my own body, my own hand in particular, is an attempt to generate uncanny sensations in viewers. The use of plaster and cement, two unnatural materials, helps to create a juxtaposition with the natural hand, an object we are accustomed to. Viewing these hands in a completely different setting to normal should aid with this phenomenon.
When these two strands of research amalgamate, in the form of what I like to call 3D collage, the viewer is met with uncanny sensations, as well as an internal critique or discourse of the included objects. This body of work is heavily influenced by Claude Levi-Strauss’ discussion on bricolage, a term that in the context of art, describes the practice of using the materials you have, for diverging purposes (Tate, 2017), as well as general assemblage methods of combining materials that have been discarded or have lost their intended purpose. Reclaiming leftover clay from previous students has played a key role in this way of working, with it being used both as a sculptural material, as well as a substrate for press moulding. I think it is really fascinating that the clay I am using had a previous purpose and life, linking with my research of the power of objects.
My practice over the last four years has seemed to, almost in all cases, utilise the hand in one way or another, and it makes a reappearance here once again. I do not see the hand as a way to convey a thought, or ideas of touch, intimacy, and connection; instead I find myself drawn to using the hand as the subject matter of the work perhaps for a more personal reason. In his book-long study of the uncanny, Nicolas Royle touches on Freud’s strange yet important admission that delving into the topic of the uncanny is unnatural for him and is somewhat impulsive but felt necessary (2003, p.07). Could this relate to my own situation? Is there something uncanny about the decision to use the hand in my work? Can I classify my hand as an evocative object? Right now, I do not have a definitive answer. I think the hand is edging towards that area however, being an object I have fixated on and relied on for artistic inspiration, and one I hope to continue researching beyond my BA.

Driveway Landscape Lighting Ideas: Illuminating Your Path with Style
Driveway landscape lighting is an essential element in creating a safe and inviting entryway to your home. A well-illuminated driveway not only enhances your property's curb appeal but also ensures safety for you and your guests. In this article, we will explore some driveway landscape lighting ideas, including the best lights for driveways, how to illuminate a driveway effectively, the most affordable options, and the ideal spacing for driveway path lights.

What is the Best Light for a Driveway?
The best lights for driveways are those that strike a balance between functionality, durability, and aesthetics. LED lights are a popular choice for driveways due to their energy efficiency, longevity, and brightness. Low-voltage LED bollard lights or in-ground well lights are excellent options for illuminating driveways. These lights provide a clear and visible path while adding a touch of elegance to your landscape.
How Do You Illuminate a Driveway?
To effectively illuminate a driveway, consider using a combination of lighting techniques. Start by installing bollard lights or in-ground well lights along the driveway edges or pathway. These lights create a guiding line and ensure safe navigation. Additionally, consider adding downlights on nearby trees or pillars to cast a subtle and inviting glow over the driveway. Combining these lighting elements creates a cohesive and visually appealing driveway illumination.
What is the Cheapest Way to Light Up a Driveway?
If you are looking for a budget-friendly option to light up your driveway, solar-powered driveway lights are an excellent choice. Solar lights are easy to install since they require no wiring, making them a cost-effective DIY solution. They charge during the day and automatically turn on at night, providing a soft and ambient glow along the driveway. While they may not be as bright as wired lights, solar driveway lights offer an eco-friendly and economical lighting option.
How Far Apart Should Driveway Path Lights Be?
The spacing of driveway path lights depends on the length and width of your driveway and the brightness of the lights. As a general guideline, path lights should be placed approximately 8 to 10 feet apart along the driveway edges. This spacing provides sufficient illumination for safe driving or walking while ensuring a visually appealing and balanced look. However, consider adjusting the distance based on the specific lighting output of the fixtures you choose.
Driveway landscape lighting ideas are essential for creating an inviting and secure entry to your home. LED bollard lights or in-ground well lights are excellent options for illuminating driveways, offering both functionality and aesthetics. To achieve effective driveway illumination, use a combination of lighting techniques, such as path lights and downlights, to create a cohesive and visually appealing lighting design. For budget-friendly options, consider solar-powered driveway lights, which provide an eco-friendly and economical solution. Finally, spacing driveway path lights approximately 8 to 10 feet apart ensures proper illumination and enhances the overall beauty of your driveway landscape lighting design.

Illuminating the Night: Transforming Outdoor Spaces with Thoughtful Lighting
Illuminating the Night: Transforming Outdoor Spaces with Thoughtful Lighting
Outdoor lighting Vancouver is not merely a practical necessity; it is a powerful tool that can transform the ambiance, safety, and functionality of our outdoor spaces. Whether you have a cozy backyard, a sprawling garden, or a commercial outdoor area, thoughtful outdoor lighting can enhance aesthetics, provide security, and extend the usability of these spaces well into the evening. In this blog, we will explore the benefits of outdoor lighting, discuss different lighting techniques, and provide tips for creating an enchanting outdoor lighting scheme.
The Benefits of Outdoor Lighting:
Safety and Security: Properly placed outdoor lighting plays a crucial role in enhancing safety and security. Well-lit paths, steps, and entrances reduce the risk of accidents, while strategically placed lights can deter potential intruders by eliminating dark hiding spots around your property.
Increased Usability: Outdoor lighting extends the usability of your outdoor spaces beyond daylight hours. Whether it's a relaxing evening on the patio, an outdoor gathering, or a quiet stroll in the garden, well-designed lighting creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages people to spend more time outdoors.
Aesthetic Enhancement: Outdoor lighting can dramatically enhance the visual appeal of your outdoor areas. By highlighting architectural features, landscaping elements, and focal points, you can create a captivating and welcoming ambiance. Lighting also adds depth, texture, and dimension to your outdoor spaces, showcasing their beauty even at night.
Outdoor Lighting Techniques:
Ambient Lighting: Ambient lighting provides general illumination, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout your outdoor space. It can be achieved through various fixtures, such as wall-mounted lanterns, post lights, or overhead string lights. Consider the overall mood you want to create and the specific areas you want to illuminate when selecting ambient lighting options.
Task Lighting: Task lighting is focused illumination that serves a specific purpose, such as lighting up cooking areas, outdoor dining spaces, or reading nooks. Use task lighting to ensure functionality in areas where specific activities take place. Examples include pendant lights over an outdoor kitchen or pathway lights leading to a seating area.
Accent Lighting: Accent lighting adds drama and visual interest by highlighting specific features, such as trees, plants, sculptures, or architectural details. Use spotlights, well lights, or uplights to create stunning focal points and add depth to your outdoor space. Experiment with different angles and intensities to achieve the desired effect.
Pathway Lighting: Pathway lighting ensures safe navigation and adds a touch of charm to your outdoor area. Consider low-level lighting options like bollard lights, stake lights, or in-ground fixtures to illuminate pathways, walkways, and garden borders. Soft, diffused lighting guides guests and enhances the overall ambiance.
Tips for Creating an Enchanting Outdoor Lighting Scheme:
Plan and Design: Start by assessing your outdoor space and determining its focal points, areas of activity, and pathways. Develop a lighting plan that incorporates different techniques to achieve the desired ambiance and functionality. Consider factors such as the size of the area, the style of your home, and the overall mood you want to create.
Balance and Layering: Achieve a balanced lighting scheme by layering different types of lighting. Combine ambient, task, accent, and pathway lighting to create depth, highlight specific features, and provide ample illumination for various activities. Experiment with different intensities and angles to create a captivating effect.
Energy Efficiency: Opt for energy-efficient lighting options, such as LED fixtures, to minimize energy consumption and reduce environmental impact. LED lights are long-lasting, cost-effective, and come in a variety of color temperatures, allowing you to customize the ambiance to your preference.
Automation and Controls: Consider incorporating lighting controls and automation systems to enhance convenience and energyefficiency. Timers, motion sensors, or smart home technology can automate lighting schedules, adjust brightness levels, and provide remote control options, allowing you to easily manage and customize your outdoor lighting.
Professional Installation: While DIY installations are possible for some outdoor lighting projects, it's advisable to consult with a professional for more complex installations. Professionals have the expertise to design and install outdoor lighting systems safely, ensuring proper wiring, weather resistance, and compliance with local electrical codes.
Conclusion:
Outdoor lighting is a powerful tool that can elevate the beauty, safety, and functionality of your outdoor spaces. By carefully planning and incorporating different lighting techniques, you can create an enchanting ambiance that extends the usability of your outdoor areas well into the evening hours. From illuminating pathways to highlighting architectural features, outdoor lighting transforms ordinary spaces into captivating and inviting environments. Embrace the magic of outdoor lighting and transform your outdoor spaces into enchanting retreats that are both functional and visually stunning.

Changing how we talk about cars hitting pedestrians and cyclists

Excerpt from a CTV news article published on Jan 21, 2022:
Several pedestrians are in hospital with life-threatening injuries as a result of three collisions in Metro Vancouver.
The first happened in West Vancouver.
An elderly woman was struck by a truck as she crossed 13th Street at a marked crosswalk before 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
"The driver remained on scene and is co-operating with police," Mounties said in their statement.
At the time, drivers were warned traffic would be disrupted for several hours and were asked to avoid the area.
This news article is a text book example of the formula that media use when reporting on collisions involving drivers hitting pedestrians or cyclists. It goes like this:
1.) Always frame the collision* in the passive voice, putting the focus on the pedestrian being hit by a vehicle (never on the driver who hit them).
2.) Barely mention the driver who caused the collision, except to say whether they remained on the scene. If they did, use positive language about how they are "cooperating" with police.
3.) Finally, even if someone has died or suffered life threatening injuries, state if the collision is causing traffic delays and inconvenience to other drivers.
When we constantly read these news reports, we are led to believe that car crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists are an unavoidable fact of life in our cities and communities. This is wrong. These tragedies can be prevented, we just aren't doing enough to examine how.
In her new book, There are No Accidents, journalist Jessie Singer argues that this predisposition to blame human error and accept the old adage that "accidents happen" is not only misguided, but insidious. It covers up the systems that enable accidents.
Singer's book includes a tragic personal account of how in 2006, her best friend, Eric, was hit by a drunk driver while riding on a bike path in New York City. The driver was convicted of DUI and vehicular manslaughter. Nine years later, another drunk driver killed a cyclist on that path. Two years after that, in 2017, a truck driver deliberately plowed into the spot where Eric died, murdering 8 people and injuring 12.
According to a review in Washington Monthly, after Eric’s death, Singer was livid that some accident inspectors focused on his not wearing a helmet. But she pointed out that Eric was hit by a car going 50 miles (80km) per hour. As a result, donning a helmet would not have mattered. Multiple deaths on that same path proves the weakness is in the design.
Pedestrian and cyclist fatalities are at an all-time high. They are also the leading cause of death for children in Canada. Most are preventable, and yet these media reports never examine how to hold governments accountable for measures like lowering speed limits, increasing pedestrian cross walks, deterring traffic through residential neighbourhoods, adding bollards and separated bike lanes, and reducing lane size so that neighbourhood roads look less like highways.
We place the onus on the victim to not get murdered by 3,500 lbs of steel. How often do police and local car insurance companies proudly launch pedestrian safety campaigns where they hand out reflective vests and flashlights and warn pedestrians to "make eye contact" with drivers. Tell that to a 5 year old, or to this crossing guard who got hit saving a child's life while a car barrelled through a cross walk without stopping.
This is what hero police officers do! North East Police Officer Annette Goodyear saved a student from harm’s way early this morning. pic.twitter.com/efpgjqucuO
Even this story focuses on the victim. Who was the driver? We rarely hear whether the driver was speeding, distracted, or even drunk. In most of these cases, it is highly likely that one or all of these is true, because your likelihood of seriously injuring a pedestrian or cyclist is pretty slim if you are obeying the rules of the road. And if that is not the case, there is something wrong with those rules and they need to be changed.
Either way, a person shouldn't die while out for a walk or a bike ride and have this accepted as an unpreventable accident. We need more cities and communities to get serious and invest heavily in Vision Zero policies and infrastructure. I fully agree with Singer’s hypothesis that every accident is preventable. And changing the narrative starts with how we frame car crashes in the media.
*Note - In this post, I initially referred to car crashes as “car accidents” and a thoughtful reader pointed out that they should be called “collisions” or “crashes.” Even I was predisposed to call them accidents. According to the US Department of Transportation:
“Changing the way we think about events and the words we use to describe them affects the way we behave. Motor vehicle crashes occur "when a link or several links in the chain" are broken. Continued use of the word "accident" implies that these events are outside human influence or control. In reality, they are predictable results of specific actions.“
