Detailed explanation of LED-UV curing technology devices and advantages of printing equipment

The traditional UV curing technology has low heat utilization rate and large power consumption; UV lamps generate ozone and emit heat, and need to be equipped with exhaust devices; the overall operating cost is high. In February 2008, Japan's Ryobi and Toyo Ink launched LED-UV curing technology for the first time. At the China Print 2013 exhibition, RYOBI offset presses were equipped with LED-UV curing devices.

      1. LED-UV curing device

LED is the abbreviation of Lighting Emitting Diode, that is, "light-emitting diode". LED has many advantages such as low power consumption, long life, miniaturization, light weight, high responsiveness, high output and no mercury, and is called "a trump card for solving environmental problems".

LED-UV curing devices that emit light in the near-ultraviolet band are used in the printing field to replace curing devices using mercury lamps, halogen lamps, and sodium lamps. The illumination light source of the LED-UV curing unit used on the offset printing press consists of a row of micro-components of high-output light-emitting LED-UV lamps arranged without gaps.

At present, the irradiation intensity of LED-UV lamps is weaker than that of traditional UV lamps, and the irradiation distance is shorter. The irradiation distance of traditional UV lamps is 150-300mm, while the irradiation distance of LED-UV lamps is about 20mm. Therefore, the distance between the illumination light source of the LEDUV curing device and the surface of the substrate is much smaller. Generally, the distance between the traditional UV lamp and the surface of the substrate is 100-150mm, while the distance between the light source of the LEDUV curing device and the surface of the substrate is 10-20mm.

      2. Advantages of LED-UV curing device

(1) The ink is instantly cured.

(2) No ozone is generated, and no exhaust pipe is required, which is conducive to environmental protection.

(3) The auxiliary equipment is small and compact.

(4) The LED-UV lamp has a long life (more than 10 times that of the traditional UV lamp), low heat generation, can be ignited or extinguished instantly, no preheating is required, the lamp is only turned on during printing, and the power consumption is low (only the traditional UV lamp has 1/9), good economy.

(5) Since the LED-UV curing device generates less heat, it can prevent the deformation of non-heat-resistant substrates, and it will not cause the paper to lose moisture and deform, the hand feel will change, and static electricity will not be generated.

3. Problems and solutions of LED-UV curing device

(1) When the printing speed is 16,000 sheets/hour, the distance between the LED-UV curing device and the paper is 15mm. For ordinary paper, it is no problem to ensure that the four-color overprint ink is completely cured. However, when the thickness of the paper exceeds 0.3mm, due to the increased stiffness of the paper, it is necessary to take measures to control the bending of the paper, otherwise the paper may be smudged due to the contact between the paper and the LED-UV curing device.

(2) Since the just-printed ink is uneven, if it is cured instantly, the unevenness will remain, and the diffuse reflection of light will affect the gloss of the printed product. In order to ensure the gloss of the printed product, it is necessary to allow some time for the ink to level naturally. In this way, without increasing the space of the delivery part of the offset press, it is necessary to improve the delivery part and add two cylinders.

(3) LED-UV curing device needs to be specially matched with LED-UV ink. At present, the price of this ink is high and it is not yet popular.

(4) The initial investment of an offset press equipped with an LED-UV curing device may be higher.
