En un día como hoy FALLECE el artista sevillano don JOSÉ LAFITA DÍAZ, el cual, estuvo interesado principalmente por la escultura y el diseño.

Entre su obra más importantes podemos destacar la fuente que adorna la Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes, junto a la Giralda 1929. La estatua del Almirante Bonifaz que figura en el pedestal del monumento a nuestro Santo Fernando III de Castilla, en la Plaza Nueva (1924). La gran y bellísima estatua del Monumento al Sagrado Corazón de San Juan de Aznalfarache (1944). El busto de don Miguel Mañara que se encuentra ubicado en los jardines del Hospital de la Caridad de Sevilla (1928) y la fuente, que hubo hasta no hace mucho, en el Patio de Banderas (1928).

Como curiosidad, cabe mencionar, que fue un gran aficionado al deporte, llegando a formar parte, en el año 1905, de los fundadores y jugadores del Sevilla Fútbol Club, para cuyo equipo diseñó su primer escudo...

The Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes in Seville is located in the Santa Cruz neighborhood , within its Casco Antiguo district , in the heart of the historic center of the city.

The Plaza del Triunfo, the Santa Marta barreduela and the Don Remondo, Mateos Gago and Placentines streets all come together.

Among the most representative buildings in this square are the Cathedral, with the Giralda, the Archbishop's Palace and the Encarnación convent.

It is one of the busiest squares in Seville, especially for the numerous groups of tourists who have one of their obligatory stops here. Essentially pedestrian in nature, under the orange trees in front of the convent and at the foot of the Giralda, many of the horse-drawn carriages that make their particular route through this area of ​​the city are usually found.

This square takes on a singular role in very special festivities such as Corpus Christi or Holy Week , since its Gothic façade called Los Palos becomes the entrance or exit door for the different processional processions, which is why its surroundings are prepared and adorns exceptionally.

This is a square with an irregular layout, large proportions and a markedly monumental character, which is dominated by the cathedral and the Giralda, both declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1987 . The Giralda, converted into a representative symbol of the entire city, has its access and its best overview from here. The rest of this front of the square is made up of the head of the cathedral, where Gothic elements are mixed, such as the façade of Los Palos itself, together with other Renaissance elements, such as the apse with which the Royal Chapel is closed.

Closing its adjoining front is the Archbishop's Palace, a splendid Baroque building that shows the square one of the best covers in this style that the city has.

The next front is closed by some of the residential buildings that form part of the beginning of the streets that reach the square on that side. And finally, the last front is occupied almost entirely by the Encarnación convent, a building with architectural lines in clear contrast to the previous ones, which opens the doorway of its secluded chapel on this front.

In the center of the square stands an elegant stone fountain, with a low bowl and mixed profile, which is crowned with a wrought iron lantern with several arms and topped with a small cross made of the same material.

Seville, Spain (No. 16)

It is one of the most photographed monuments in Seville and you remember it from your early childhood, but we would put our hands in the fire if you know nothing about it. We are talking about the fountain-lamppost in the Plaza de la Virgen de los Reyes, one of the most interesting architectural hybrids in the city.

From now on, every time you take a photo next to this monument with the Giralda in the background, you will not think that it is just any fountain-lamppost when you know this information:

It is a work that dates from 1929, the year of the Ibero-American Exposition, and its creator is José Lafita Díaz, son of the landscaper José Lafita y Blanco. It was commissioned in 1928 as part of the reform program for public spaces and for the design it was inspired by the Triunfo de la Virgen del Patrocinio and, for the overflow, in which Mañara designed for the Hospital de la Caridad.

Due to its frequented enclave, the monument has been reformed on numerous occasions, especially the replacement of the pavement.

Curiously, in its beginnings this fountain-lamppost was an octagonal pedestrian shelter and around it there was a circular platform adorned with geometric drawings, now disappeared.

We would like to be able to say that our fountain-lamppost is unique in the world, but if we travel to Kansas City (Missouri), we will find an identical reproduction next to a smaller Giralda.

As we will also see another very similar one in Zacatecas (Mexico).
