Erle Reiter, Minneapolis Winter Olympian

The world's best winter athletes are gathering in Beijing this month for the 2022 Winter Olympics. When athletes met in Garmich-Partenkirchen, Germany, for the 1936 Winter Olympic Games, the top two American men's figure skaters were both from the Twin Cities. Robin Lee of Saint Paul had won the U.S. National Championships and Erle Reiter of Minneapolis had taken second. Reiter's papers, including handwritten notes for his skating programs and mementos from his Olympic experience, are now an archival collection in Special Collections.

Reiter grew up in Linden Hills and first fell in love with skating as a seven-year-old on a homemade ice rink in his backyard. As a teenager, Reiter took lessons locally at the Minneapolis Arena and studied with leading skaters at the Skating Club of New York. When he finished second at the U.S. National Championships in 1936, he secured a spot for the 1936 Olympics in Germany.

Under the looming specter of Nazism, Reiter and the rest of the Olympic team travelled to Bavaria to compete. The armband that Reiter wore in competition, as well as his Olympic identification card, passport, daily competition schedules, and souvenirs from his time in Garmich-Partenkirchen are included in the archival collection. Neither Reiter nor Robin Lee left Germany with an Olympic medal. Lee finished 12th and Reiter came in 13th.

After the Olympics, Reiter continued to skate. He won two more silver medals at the U.S. National Championships in 1937 and 1938. Rather than continue to train for the 1940 Olympics, Reiter became a professional skater in 1939. Together with other famous skaters of the era, he was a featured performer at a recurring ice show at New York's St. Regis Hotel. Reiter made a good decision, it turns out, since the 1940 and 1944 Olympics were both cancelled due to World War II.

Reiter served in the U.S. Army during the war and returned home to Minneapolis after its end. With his wife, Helen, Reiter raised two sons. He was an active member of the Minnetonka and Calhoun Yacht Clubs, and he continued to figure skate into his 80s. Erle Reiter died December 3, 2008, and is buried in Lakewood Cemetery.

Portland, OR -- Last year, Black Belt Eagle Scout released her new album At the Party With My Brown Friends via Saddle Creek. If you haven’t given the record a spin yet, today is the day to do it! Yesterday, she released the music video for one of the album’s songs “I Said I Wouldn’t Write This Song.” The track is an excellent encapsulation of Black Belt Eagle Scout’s blend of shredding indie rock and gorgeous songwriting and lyrics. 

The music video is directed and edited by Chantal Jung (Inujuk Nunatsiavutimi) and is meant to raise awareness about the Alaskan coastline. The animated video shows the intimate relationship Indigenous people and and animals have with the coastline.

Lake Naivasha Lake Naivasha is a beautiful freshwater lake, unlike many in the region, which are soda lakes. It is the highest of the Rift Valley Lakes, although reasonably shallow, with the depth varying dependent upon rainfall. Clearwater Real Estate Market - There Is Something For Everyone

The City of Clearwater, Florida has much to offer both residents and visitors. CLEARWATER itself consists of several unique areas. Two of those are the coastal cities of Cleveland and Clearwater Beach and their nearby marinas. Both Clearwater Beach and downtown Clearwater have large waterfront marinas making that area particularly appealing to boaters.

In addition to the obvious fact that there are many public schools in Clearwater, Florida, that are located downtown and on the beaches, there are also private schools as well. As you might expect, Cleveland Schools and Clearwater Schools are extremely close geographically. This proximity has made CLEARWATER an excellent choice for children who are seeking a start in the school system. With strong academic levels and various enrichment options available to students, CLEARWATER offers the kinds of schools that will prepare them for life outside of the classroom.

While CLEARWATER offers exceptional public schools, it is also home to some private schools that can offer exceptional quality. The Cleveland Schools and the Clearwater Schools are among the most sought after in the state of Florida. As is the case with most private schools, CLEARWATER offers some of the best private education in the state. All four public schools in CLEARWATER have received accreditation from the American School Association and the Commission on International and Trans-Regional Accreditation of Public Schools.

Along with a host of marinas, the downtown area of Clearwater is filled with restaurants, shops, businesses, and other attractions. Water sports abound in Clearwater. Many areas along the marinas have lifeguard stations and concessions. For those who love water sports, Clearwater is the perfect place to live.

The public schools in Clearwater County also offer a good selection of educational opportunities. The schools include the Cleveland Schools, the Cleveland Institute of Friendship Schools, Fabulous Woodschool, and Fabulous Lake Schools. CLEARWATER is home to many well-respected private schools. These schools include the Cleveland Schools Leadership Institute, the Sawyer School, and the Butler School. It is also home to two public elementary schools: Gunnery High School and Cedar Crest Elementary School. CLEARWATER is also home to two middle schools: Bethel Middle School and Cedar Crossing Middle School.

In addition to housing some of the nation's finest public schools, Clearwater is also renowned for its great shopping areas. Clearwater beach has some of the nation's finest malls and shopping centers. The Banyan Shopping Center on International Drive features one of the largest malls in the area. It also features an indoor bowling center and a movie theater. The Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnnesota, is also in the area.

The Clearwater area has some of the nation's best public transportation systems. CLEARWATER UT has the Harbor Line, the rapid transit system that connects all of the marinas in Clearwater and downtown Disney. Other popular routes include the Silver Star Line, the commuter rail, and the ferry service. Buses in the area will get you where you need to go - but you can also ride the local bus system that goes to several downtown Disney area hotels. It's also just a great way to travel to all of the other resorts.

For those who are interested in boating, there are many lakes in the area near Clearwater. Many marinas have special boats that are available to rent. Some of these boats include the 72-foot cutter "Big Red" and "Cap'N Fish." Other popular fishing charters in the area include Boquete Yacht Club, Serenity Charters, and Sperry Charters. Many of these fishing charters also offer water sports tours of the area.

If shopping is more your style, Clearwater has some of the nation's greatest shopping areas. Dozens of independent bookstores are located throughout the city and along the lake. The Lakewood Mall features a big department store as well as a movie theater. The Gallop Place mall features stores that feature designer clothing and art galleries. It is also a great place to eat - it features a full restaurant that offers gourmet dining.

CLEARWATER ISLANDS opens its door to visitors by offering great deals to those who want to explore the area. The Sandestin Peninsula offers fishing and other activities for all ages. The area also offers boat charters for hunters and fishermen. You can also enjoy nature programs at the peninsula.

Whether you want to experience the thrill of deep sea fishing, or take a relaxing stroll on the shores of Clearwater Bay, the area offers something for everyone. The area boasts some of the best real estate in the immediate area. The homes are well maintained, safe, and the prices are reasonable. Clearwater is a wonderful place to call home for a great price.

Each of the sailing classes is split into smaller divisions in an attempt to group boats of similar speed and rating together so those intent on getting to Port A as fast as possible compete agressively, while other divisions are reserved for those who like their sailing a bit more leisurely. Those in the know will tell you that the fun really starts at the Welcome Sailor Rum Party, followed by the awards ceremony, usually held in Port Aransas. This year, due to hurricane damage along the Texas coast in Port Aransas, the race will begin and end in Galveston. The awards party will be at Lakewood Yacht Club on Saturday, October 7th. With a crowd of more than 2,000 people, including sailors, their support crew, friends and family, you can be certain that the tall tales and cold libations will be flowing freely. But the Harvest Moon Regatta is about more than parties and having a good time. A sizable chunk of the proceeds go to charity through the Sail-a-Thon program that benefits the Judy's Mission Ovarian Cancer Foundation.The Harvest Moon Regatta is also a race with a conscience, as organizers have gone to great lengths to limit the environmental impact of the competitors. Shifting to paperless registration, making non-toxic boat cleaning supplies available to participants and providing re-usable drink bottles to crews to help cut down on the use of plastic bottles, are all steps that have been taken in recent years to ensure the regatta sailors leave the gulf as clean as they found it.
