So I've had a laparoscopy on Wednesday - that's a minor operation where the surgeon cuts into your belly. In my case to see if I have endometriosis.
And it turns out I do indeed have endometriosis, and, more importantly, adenomyosis, which is kinda the same thing except the "bad" tissue is inside the uterus rather than outside of it.
I've been back home since Friday morning and everything is healing well and practically not hurting anymore.
And now I finally know what's wrong with me - and that there IS something wrong with me. That my constant exhaustion and tiredness, my chronic pain, my being unable to do so many things and my struggling to do so many others does have an actual reason, an actual source. People will finally have to take my problems seriously. And maybe, there's even something to be done to improve things.
I can't even begin to say what an incredible relief that is. What that's doing to my emotional state. How incredibly happy and hopeful I am. Or rather, how incredibly defeated and hopeless I've been until now, which is only becoming properly apparent now in comparison.
At the same time I'm also angry. It's been a damn long journey to get to this point. And yet I know that in comparison, I'm fairly lucky and got my diagnosis relatively early. Many others need to search and fight to be taken seriously a lot longer than I have.
Research on endometriosis has made great steps forward in recent years, but there's still a lot of details that we straight up don't know. Starting with what causes endometriosis and is it something you're born with or something you develop at some point?
I guess I just...needed to yell all that out into the void.
Maybe some day I'll make a post about all the things I learned along the way and what resources would have helped me if I'd already known about them at the beginning of my journey.

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique where small incisions are made in the abdomen, through which specialized instruments and a camera are inserted. Surgeons use the camera to visualize the internal organs on a monitor and perform the surgery with precision.
This approach typically results in less pain, shorter recovery times, and smaller scars compared to traditional open surgery. It's commonly used for procedures such as gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and appendectomy.
The procedure for laparoscopic surgery typically involves the following steps:
Anesthesia: The patient is given general anesthesia to ensure they are unconscious and feel no pain during the surgery.
Creation of small incisions: Several small incisions, usually around 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters in length, are made in the abdomen.
Insertion of trocars: Trocars, which are narrow tubes with valves, are inserted through the incisions. These serve as ports for the insertion of surgical instruments and a camera.
Insufflation: Carbon dioxide gas is pumped into the abdomen through one of the trocars to create space and lift the abdominal wall away from the organs, providing better visibility and working space for the surgeon.
Insertion of laparoscope: A laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera and light source, is inserted through one of the trocars. This allows the surgeon to view the internal organs on a monitor in real-time.
Surgical procedure: Specialized instruments, such as graspers, scissors, and cautery devices, are inserted through the remaining trocars. The surgeon performs the necessary surgical steps guided by the images from the laparoscope.
Closure: After the surgery is completed, the instruments and laparoscope are removed, and the carbon dioxide gas is released from the abdomen. The small incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape.
Recovery: The patient is monitored in the recovery room until they wake up from anesthesia and are stable to be discharged or transferred to a hospital room for further observation.
Throughout the procedure, the surgical team works together to ensure the safety and success of the surgery.

Hysterectomy log
RECOVERY, DAY 1
Today is the day after my laparoscopic hysterectomy. I have a bit of an irritated throat from being intubated, and I'm sore in all kinds of weird places I didn't expect, like my sides and shoulders and neck. The site where they gave me the ondansetron injection is also quite sore. Overall, though, I've felt pretty good. Tired and sore, but otherwise fine. My partner went to pick up my pain meds today and so far I've only had one (trying to take as few as possible) but I'm going to take another before bed as I am quite painful.
Much of my discomfort has been due to bloating from the gas they used to inflate my abdomen so they could see better. My incisions are pretty sore and tender today (they weren't yesterday, strangely enough). Standing and sitting hurt quite a bit, and really doing much of anything is painful and difficult, so I've spent most of the day sitting or reclining on the couch. I did get up and walk around a bit a couple times, though, and I was able to shower today which was nice.
I've had some mild cramping sensations as everything settles into place, and a bit of spotting when I urinate. (My stream is pretty much back to normal today. The first pee of the day was still a bit dribbly but it got better as the day went on.) I thought the spotting would bother me more since menstruation was a huge point of dysphoria for me, but knowing that it's due to the thing being gone has made the experience pretty much dysphoria-free.
My surgeon said I can go back to work as soon as I feel ready, and I am on lifting restrictions for 2 weeks (nothing heavier than a gallon of milk). However, she also stressed that I should listen to my body and not push myself. I'm planning on taking the whole next week off unless I just feel really extra good earlier than I anticipated.
I go back in 2 weeks for a post-op follow up, and then again 4 weeks after that to check on my vaginal sutures and get cleared for penetrative sex. All my sutures are dissolvable and my incisions were covered in what's basically super glue so there's not really any maintenance there which is nice.

Breast Cancer Laparoscopy: A Minimally Invasive Approach to the Treatment
Breast cancer remains a common concern for women worldwide, and timely diagnosis and effective treatment are crucial for managing the condition. While traditional open surgery has long been the normal approach, advancements in technology have opened doors for minimally invasive options like breast cancer laparoscopy.
Tumblr media
Here we explain this innovative technique, explaining its principles, applications, and potential advantages.
What is Breast Cancer Laparoscopy?
Imagine surgery conducted through tiny cuts instead of a large cut. That's the essence of laparoscopy or also known as keyhole surgery. In breast cancer laparoscopy, a specialized surgeon utilizes a slender instrument called a Laparoscope. With a camera and light source, the laparoscope is inserted through a small cut near the belly button, which shows a magnified view of the internal breast tissue on a monitor. Using additional cuts for surgical instruments, the surgeon can then perform various procedures with minimal damage to surrounding tissue.
When is Breast Cancer Laparoscopy Used?
A laparoscope is a multipurpose tool for tackling different stages and types of breast cancer. It's commonly used for:
Lumpectomy: Removing the cancerous tumor while protecting surrounding healthy breast tissue.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy: Examining specific lymph nodes for cancer spread.
Mastectomy: Removing the entire breast in certain cases.
Diagnostic procedures: Biopsies or visual assessments to confirm cancer presence or size.
Who Can Benefit from a Breast Cancer Laparoscopy?
The suitability of laparoscopy depends on individual factors like tumor size, location, and overall health. Consulting a qualified breast cancer surgeon like Dr. Mohamed Ismail, known for his expertise at the Moulana Hospital, one of the best breast cancer surgery centres in Kerala, is crucial to determining if this approach aligns with your specific needs and medical history.
While advancements in minimally invasive surgery like laparoscopy are changing breast cancer treatment, it's crucial to remember that this technique might not be suitable for every case. Open communication with your healthcare team, including renowned specialists like Dr. Ismail, is important to explore all available options and make informed decisions for your well-being.
