The Unexpected Mentor Shaina Tranquilino November 30, 2024
Ethan slumped on the park bench, a crumpled letter of dismissal clutched in his hand. The words “academic probation” and “failure to meet standards” blurred through his tears. College was supposed to be his ticket out of mediocrity. Now, it felt like a locked door.
As he wallowed in his thoughts, an elderly man with a weathered face and a tattered fedora sat down beside him. He smelled faintly of cigars and old books.
“Tough day?” the man asked, his gravelly voice cutting through the silence.
Ethan nodded but said nothing, hoping the stranger would take the hint and leave him alone. Instead, the man leaned back, gazing at the pigeons that had gathered nearby.
“You know, I used to think failure was the end of the road too,” the man continued, seemingly speaking more to himself. “But it’s funny how life has a way of surprising you.”
Curiosity piqued despite himself, Ethan turned. “Yeah? What do you know about failure?”
The man chuckled. “More than most. I dropped out of school when I was your age. Thought I knew it all. Spent years fumbling, trying to figure out what I wanted. Turns out, I wasn’t failing at life—I was just in the wrong classroom.”
Ethan frowned. “So what happened?”
The man extended his hand. “Name’s Walter. And to answer your question, I started paying attention to what the world was trying to teach me.”
Intrigued, Ethan found himself meeting Walter in the park every afternoon. The old man spoke of lessons he had learned while fixing cars in his youth, managing a diner, and eventually finding his calling as a carpenter. He didn’t lecture; he shared stories—like how a stubborn customer taught him the value of patience, or how crafting a chair taught him the importance of precision and pride in one’s work.
“Life’s like carpentry,” Walter once said. “You measure, you cut, you screw up. But if you have the right tools—and the right mindset—you can fix just about anything.”
Ethan began to notice changes in himself. He took up part-time work at a local mechanic’s shop and discovered a knack for solving problems with his hands. Inspired by Walter’s stories, he started crafting small wooden sculptures, selling them online. His failures in college no longer felt like dead ends but rather a redirection toward something he genuinely enjoyed.
Months turned into a year. One day, Ethan sat beside Walter on their usual bench, holding up a small wooden carving of a bird. “For you,” he said. “Thanks for teaching me to fly again.”
Walter’s eyes glistened as he examined the bird. “Beautiful work, kid. But remember, I didn’t teach you to fly. You had the wings all along.”
Ethan smiled, realizing Walter was right. Life’s greatest lessons hadn’t come from a classroom, but from an unexpected mentor who taught him to embrace failure, adapt, and soar in his own way.

Students of grade VII and X as a part an experiential learning session made their visit to G.D Museum, Coimbatore. They explored the principles of physics, experimenting with different sound waves and pendulums, from the simple ones to the giant pendulum. They investigated viscosity and density of water, understood the workings of optical illusions, and observed the effects of concave and convex mirrors. They were fascinated by the electrifying plasma globe and the moving buildings in a panoramic view. The students also enjoyed solving puzzles in an interactive and entertaining manner. This experience allowed Sri Nationalites to transform their theoretical knowledge into practical, do-it-yourself learning.

During the trip, children's excitement was skyhigh as our adventure trip to Kufri kicked off with a thrilling visit to the zoo, where we got up close with some himalyan wildlife. Next, we explored the magnificent Chail Palace, diving into its rich history and stunning architecture. To wrap up the day, we gathered around a bonfire under the stars, dancing the night away with a DJ spinning the tracks. 🎶🔥 🌟 Next day, the children spent an unforgettable day in the beautiful town of Shimla! 🏞️ From strolling through the vibrant local markets to indulging in some retail therapy, it was a shopper's paradise. The charm of Shimla’s streets, filled with the aroma of local cuisine and the hustle and bustle of friendly locals, was simply captivating. 🛍️✨ We then explored the stunning local sights, each view more picturesque than the last. Today at Our Lady’s and St Benedict’s Yr Reception dinosaurs topic made fossils. Mega Yr 4 mountains started to look at rock structures and age of rocks . We also had a full inspection for Learning Outside the Classroom and Adventure Mark. The inspector communicated that we deliver the curriculum outside the classroom to the highest standard and that the school has such a great feel. Teachers and all staff work as a team. My thanks go to all staff. Including James Bob Birks and Mike Perry for delivering a great day while I drank coffee and guided the inspector through lesson plans etc. #survival #outdooreducation #outdoors #curriculum #peakdistrict #gowild #bushcraft #wilderness #living #skills #nature #learning #woodland #woods #adventure #expeditions #exploration #wildcamping #hiking #journey #firecraft #treeandplant #wildedibles #bushcrafter #forestschool #peakdistrictsurvivalschool #schools #pathfinder #learningoutsidetheclassroom https://www.instagram.com/p/B7oJIM4hOG9/?igshid=oi1otjn60i7f

5th April 2017 - Learning outside the classroom presentation
Today was the presentation regarding learning outside the classroom. It went well - we decided to focus in on the use of video cameras at Nell Bank. This would be used to video the Den Building activity at Nell Bank which was to promote and enhance team building skills. The video camera would enable children to video each other in order to watch it back and write a reflective piece An advantage of learning outside the classroom is that it allows children to explore learning for themselves. This means that they will become independent and can learn through play and take control of their own learning. However, disadvantage of learning outside the classroom could be that weather conditions could limit the activities children could take part in.
It was interesting to see everyone in the groups perspective on learning outside the classroom. Overall, we all came to the conclusion that this is an efficient method of progression in learning as all children enjoy anything beyond the classroom therefore would enjoy learning too!

Students of II grade had an exciting and educational day out visiting the post office, a fruit shop, and a printing office!
Post Office: Our curious minds explored how letters and parcels make their journey from sender to receiver. The students were fascinated by the sorting process and got a behind-the-scenes look at how mail is handled. They even got to send a postcard to their families!
Fruit Shop: Next, we visited a local fruit shop where the students learned about different types of fruits, their origins, and the importance of eating healthy. The vibrant colours and delicious aromas made this stop a favorite! They even had a chance to buy some fresh fruits.
Printing Office: Finally, we headed to a printing office where the students discovered the magic of turning words into printed pages. They saw how books, newspapers, and posters are made, and learned about the different printing techniques. The printing press demonstration was a highlight!
It was a day full of learning, fun, and new experiences. A big thank you to the post office, fruit shop, and printing office for welcoming us and sharing their knowledge with our students.

We're Off To See The Wizard! 🧙♂️
The Land of Oz, a theme park dedicated to “The Wizard of Oz,” is opening in June for six days. Although the dates are few, visitors will not need ruby slippers 👠👠 or a hot air balloon 🎈 to get there.
Located on Beech Mountain in North Carolina, visitors can skip down the Yellow Brick Road with Dorothy through the magical Land of Oz to search for the Wonderful Wizard. As guests "Journey with Dorothy," they may have the opportunity to become part of the fictional world when they are handed a script to act out scenes at selected stops on the Yellow Brick Road.
The park originally opened in 1970 intending to become a reincarnation of the Land of Oz featured in the classic film. The park closed its emerald gates in 1980 but began opening for events such as "Journey with Dorothy" and "Autumn at Oz" in the 1990s.
Tickets are currently on sale for this special June event! 🎟️
