His personal library, filled with books of international standards, reflected his intellectual depth and commitment to learning.

He was an epitome of true nationalism, dedicating his entire life to the national cause. When he was abducted and imprisoned last time, he was released and acquitted of all charges. When he reunited with us, he shared a poignant truth: “It is better to embrace death than to endure the inhumane torture of secret agencies’ cells.” His resilience and words continue to inspire those who fight for justice and freedom.

He knew that his relentless struggle and unwavering determination for the Baloch national cause would eventually lead him to the same fate. The protagonist, Rozeena, just started out as a pediatrician, and also runs a free clinic out of her house. The setting is Karachi, Pakistan, 1964. Rozeena is checking the lungs of one of her patients, who took Datura on their own. Here are "Rozeena's" thoughts on the subject:

"Whether people called it datura, thorn apple, or jimsonweed, the folklore medicinal plant was a poisonous analgesic and hallucinogenic. Yes, a paste of its crushed leaves could soothe and heal burns. Inhaling the smoke of burning leaves did relax muscles and could rid [the patient] of an asthmatic spasm. مشاہدے میں تو یہ بھی آیا کہ جب بھی ان محلوں میں کوئی ’نووارد‘ آتا تو اس کا بھی پہلا سوال یہی ہوتا کہ یہاں لابرئیری کہاں ہے؟ لابرئیری سے لائی گئی ان کتابوں، ناولوں اور جرائد کے پڑھنے کا اپنا ہی الگ نشہ یا خمار ہوتا۔ کسی نئی نویلی دلہن کی طرح ان کا خیال رکھا جاتا اور ایک ایک صفحے کو بڑے سنبھال سنبھال کر پلٹا جاتا، کہیں کوئی بدنما نشان یا دھبہ نہیں لگے، اس پر تو خاص توجہ دی جاتی۔ واپسی پر لابرئیری مالکان بھی ’کسٹم حکام‘ کی طرح ایک ایک صفحے کا اچھی طرح جائزہ لیتے۔ کہیں کوئی کاٹ چھانٹ ہوتی تو زر ضمانت کے طور پر جمع رقم سے اسے منہا کر لیا جاتا۔ عام طور پر لابرئیری کی ممبر شپ حاصل کی جاتی۔ جس کے لیے معمولی سی رقم اس لیے ضمانت کے طور پر جمع کرائی جاتی کہ کہیں کوئی رسالہ یا ناول لے کر نو دو گیارہ نہ ہو جائے۔ ہمارے ایک دوست ایسے بھی تھے جن کی عادت تھی کہ چاہے کچھ بھی ہو جائے ادھار کی طرح کتاب واپس نہیں کرنی۔ کئی لابرئیریز پر ان کی انٹری بند تھی۔

اچھی خاصی تعداد میں کتابیں ان کے قبضے میں تھیں تو یار دوست ان پر یہ طنز مارتے کہ وہ کیوں نہیں گھر کے باہر 'اپنی لابرئیری' کا بورڈ لگوا دیتے۔ زمانہ طالب علمی میں ہمارے جیسے مطالعے کے ’دھتی‘ پورے ہفتے اسکول میں لابرئیری کے لیے مختص پریڈ کا انتظار کرتے۔ کیونکہ یہی وہ لمحات ہوتے جب اسکول کے کتب خزانے سے علم کے انمول اور نادر موتی ہمیں مل جاتے۔ انٹر نیٹ، اسمارٹ فون اور چینلز کی بہتات کا تو دور نہیں تھا، اسی لیے کسی بھی قسم کی معلومات، تقریر، مضمون یا حوالے کے لیے یہ سمجھیں لابریئری ’گوگل سرچ انجن‘ سے زیادہ مفید اور کارآمد تصور کی جاتی۔ گو کہ فی الذمانہ بھی شہر قائد میں کئی سرکاری اور نجی لابئرئیریز قائم ہیں لیکن ان کی خستہ حالت پر بس رحم ہی آتا ہے۔ بالخصوص سرکاری کتب خانوں میں کتب اور رسائل کی عدم دستیابی کا غم، علم کی پیاس بجھانے والوں کو سہنا پڑ رہا ہے۔
