burn your life down: the director's cut, or rather, fun facts about this story now that it's over

luca's last name in my fic is davies, and formally davies-bernardi. bernardi in italian means 'strong as a bear' which, was truly a perfect coincidence that i originally thought it sounded good hyphenated with davies. it felt like the perfect little nugget to drop in here.

this one kind of took on a life of its own. I thought maybe a headcanon or a few chapters, then 46.5k words later... before writing a fic, i always like to map out where i'm going, because it helps me zero in on what story i want to tell. as someone (and who hasn't, truly) who has plenty of abandoned fics, i like to get clear on what story it is i want to tell before beginning to write so that i know it's a fic worth writing for me. no, i don't think finishing a fic should be a marker of success, but where i'm at right now, it feels like the best way for me to see if i have a story to tell or not.

speaking of stories to tell, the reason i wanted to have our main character divorced was because i wanted to try something different. i wondered how i could differentiate this mc (while keeping the reader neutral so you could picture yourselves in it if you wanted to) from others that i have written / will write in the future. the divorce and growing apart is actually kind of inspired by my previous upstairs neighbor who i met a year after his divorce. i wanted to imagine what the inner world of someone who had experienced a divorce that wasn't messy, but its relationship had just run its course and i the end, left two people who weren't sure who they were and how to talk to each other anymore would be like.

music and playlisting really helps me envision and feel into the world that I’m building. I ask myself questions like: what does their love sound like? what does this relationship shound like? how do i want the world i'm building feel, and how do i convey that in sound? and then of course, what songs could underscore certain moments of this chapter? listening to the playlist i create as i go really helps me get into character aka enter the world of the story when i'm sitting down the write.

so many of my fics and interactions are based on my own real life experiences, which is why they often feel so human and so real. i weave in little details like conversations i've had, a person i reminded of. i often write dialogue after i've imagined the scene in my head down to the cadence of how characters speak to one another to make sure it feels grounded.

speaking of, we've got to talk about the food in this fic, something that you all complimented me on at the very beginning! it was important for me to have the food feel deeply personal to reader, and be an expression of her identity through the years. yes, i wrote it with an mc with asian heritage in mind. however, i wanted to make space, again, for you to picture yourself in this fic, which is why mc's ex and family were written with japanese heritage.

a lot of the dishes were inspired by dishes i've had that were similar to what i think her culinary pov would be, and a lot of it is the way that i cook as well. i am not a chef by any means, but i am AM a home cook who occasionally does pop ups who very recently discovered my own culinary pov. food for me is something that not only helps me express myself, but has helped me connect to parts of my own identity. in so many ways, as someone who describes themselves as a cultural melting pot, food helps me feel closer to myself; it helps me find and define, and express who i am.

the culture of food and the role it plays in allowing us to connect was really important for me to weave into this story as well.

for the mikkelson twins, i pictured timothee and pauline chalamet as jesper and mathilde.

for the kimuras: rina sawayama would play astrid, darren barnet would play joe, and gia kim would play lina.

let's talk about luca's character development: so many things were so will poulter-coded/borrowed for will poulter, which felt right to do considering he wove his own life into the luca's tattoos. examples? the nike book, the kendrick lamar on the playlist, how much internal work the man has done on himself.

in the end, I initially had mc have a way bigger freak out than she did -- that it would be her final: holy shit am i ready to be loved moment, but as i wrote it, it ended up being luca who brought up the main conflict. it just ended up going in a different direction and didn't feel right to go with my original plan, because she felt so in their relationship already that i pivoted.

i watched a lot of travel and lifestyle copenhagen vlogs because i'm obsessed with youtube.

after season 2 of the bear, i wanted to explore what positive relationships with mothers could look like in these characters. that's why mothers (and single mothers) are the superheroes of this fic.

i knew i wanted this fic to be about these things: second love, loss, trusting the beginning that comes after the end, inspiration, following your heart, and mothers. these are the guiding principles that i used when writing, knowing that these were the pillars i wanted this story to be about.

looking forward: i am working on two oneshots that will live in this world, one about marcus visiting again -- an eat, pray, love for him of sorts -- that's about mothers and loss and life. the other one is a fun, sexy little smutshot that will hardlaunch their (she and luca's) restaurant so keep an eye out for those. truthfully, i've only just started workshopping the marcus one and am prioritizing finishing my carmy fic first.

Suspicion is a 1941 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.

1938; Seductive playboy Johnnie Aysgarth meets young Lina McLaidlaw on a train in England, coning her to go out with him.

The subject is taken from the novel Before the Fact by Anthony Berkeley Cox, written and published in 1932 under the pseudonym of Francis Iles. RKO had been trying to bring the book to the screen since 1935 and Emily Williams was approached for the screenplay.

Hitchcock hired Samson Raphaelson, a successful collaborator on many of Ernst Lubitsch's film, to write the screenplay.

The part of the male protagonist was entrusted to Cary Grant, in the first of four Hitchcock films he played. The part of the female protagonist was entrusted to Joan Fontaine, in her second film with Hitchcock after Rebecca.

The film was shot entirely in the studio and cost much less than the previous two American films, Rebecca and Foreign Correspondent.

Before the Fact is the story of Lina, who grows up in the countryside in the first decades of the 20th century. Lina and Johnnie spend their honeymoon in Paris, staying in the best hotels and subsequently settle in London, in a large apartment. They leave their expensive London flat and move to Dorset, where they don't know anyone.

In 1943,a group of Italian actors were in Madrid to participate in a Spanish-Italian co-production film, among them Emilio Cigoli, Paola Barbara, Nerio Bernardi, Franco Coop, Anita Farra, Felice Romano; the events of 25 July and 8 September of the same year prevented these actors from returning to Italy.

A representative of 20th Century Fox in Madrid asked the Italian actors, while waiting to return home, to take care of the dubbing of some films of the American company, so that upon the arrival of the Americans in Italy, with the reopening of the cinema market, could be ready for theaters.

O Cluster celebra seus 5 anos com viradão cultural no Centro

Plataforma que fomenta os novos talentos de arte, moda, gastronomia, música e design, ocupa o CCBB e a Casa França Brasil em corredor criativo nos dias 11 e 12 de novembro

Onze entre dez cariocas que fazem parte da cena criativa da cidade sabem: O Cluster ajuda a escrever a história das pequenas iniciativas culturais desde 2012. Em cinco anos, a plataforma ganhou novos formatos e saiu pela estrada para descobrir e fomentar talentos também de outras regiões do país, desbravando o mercado mesmo em tempos de crise. Com a bagagem de 24 edições gratuitas realizadas no Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte e Recife, O Cluster, idealizado por Carolina Herszenhut – curadora do evento-, soma mais de 300 marcas participantes e já atingiu um público de 80 mil pessoas para conferir o que os criativos brasileiros andam produzindo por aí. Ainda dentro desse somatório, a plataforma contribuiu até agora com 12 iniciativas sociais, além de apresentar mais de 70 novos chef’s da gastronomia e 50 artistas ao público em geral que já separou o seu domingo para visitar o evento.

“Comecei O Cluster para suprir uma demanda própria, porém rapidamente percebi que existia uma demanda comum nos segmentos criativos: todos precisavam canalizar e divulgar seus trabalhos. Dessa forma começamos a atuar com O Cluster, buscando preencher todos os “gaps” da indústria criativa a fim de valorizar e ajudar no crescimento desse setor. No primeiro ano já tínhamos uma lista de mais de 200 marcas querendo participar. A curadoria é importante, pois ela permite que as marcas estejam entre seus pares, possibilitando collabs, parcerias e trabalhos em conjunto, pois, dessa forma, elas se complementam. Em outros eventos o que acontecia era que havia muita mistura e as melhores marcas não se destacavam”, relembra Carolina.

Para celebrar a data de cinco anos, O Cluster realizará pela primeira vez um viradão cultural, no centro do Rio. Para isso, a plataforma ocupará nos dias 11 e 12 de novembro a Casa França Brasil e o Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) com shows, mostras, DJ’s, performances artísticas, além dos expositores de moda, design, gastronomia e infantil.

Essa será a primeira vez também que O Cluster ocupará o CCBB, que receberá o Cine O Cluster, que exibirá filmes sobre moda, arte, música e gastronomia.

O Cluster, muito mais que um evento

Como Carolina Herszenhut afirma: O Cluster não é uma feira. O Cluster é uma plataforma multicultural que não para e que a cada momento vislumbra novos horizontes. Prova disso são os diversos eventos que o projeto participou ao longo dos anos com a curadoria e correalização. O Cluster é uma plataforma onde oferece espaço para o intercâmbio de ideias, propostas e experiências dentro deste vasto universo de possibilidades. O principal objetivo é promover a troca entre os participantes da cadeia criativa com o público, fomentando a roda da economia no Rio de Janeiro e demais capitais.

Marcas reconhecidas no mercado, como Insecta Shoes, Biombo, Handred, Svetlana, Benta Studio, passaram pelo O Cluster e fazem parte da história da plataforma. E das diversas iniciativas sociais, O Cluster promoveu no ano passado uma edição voltada aos refugiados que contou com a participação das Organizações Não Governamentais Cáritas, Abraço Cultural, Refoodgees e Vidas Refugiadas promovendo ações com diversos grupos de refugiados que hoje residem na cidade do Rio. Pela primeira vez a plataforma, que é gratuita, abriu espaço para arrecadar fundos que foram 100% destinados a estas organizações. Ações específicas envolvendo sustentabilidade e meio ambiente, por exemplo, acontecem a cada edição do projeto.

A plataforma conta com 12 funcionários, a maioria mulheres, que trabalham incessantemente no escritório. A equipe atua nas áreas de Comunicação, Marketing, Cenografia, e Produção.  Num dia de evento, O Cluster trabalha com 70 funcionários só na cidade do Rio de Janeiro.

Ao longo dos cinco anos, O Cluster passou por diversos endereços da zona sul à zona norte da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, como a Casa da Glória, a reabertura da Casa da Marquesa de Santos- futuro museu da moda brasileira-, em São Cristóvão, bairro reconhecido como o corredor dos produtores da moda carioca. Atualmente, O Cluster realiza as edições na Casa França Brasil, no centro do Rio, além de promover curadorias de vários eventos, como a ocupação criativa INTEGRA que acontece de agosto a novembro, na Barra da Tijuca.  Em Belo Horizonte, O Cluster acontece na Casa Bernardi, e em Recife, no Espinheiro.

Programação dos cinco anos O Cluster

A edição de aniversário acontecerá entre os dias 11 e 12 de novembro, sábado e domingo, na Casa França Brasil e no Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil (CCBB) que se unem numa grande celebração totalmente gratuita pelos cinco anos da plataforma.

A Casa França Brasil apresentará, das 13h às 21h, dos dias 11 e 12, expositores de moda, gastronomia, design, cerâmica, publicações e infantil.

No sábado, dia 11, a banda Mulheres de Buço, vencedora do Prêmio Espíritu Libre Novos Sons, subirá o palco instalado dentro da Casa, preparando o terreno para o “Viradão O Cluster”.

Além dos expositores, haverá a performance artística com a curadoria de Pedro Meyer no dia 12, domingo, onde o público será convidado a interagir com os artistas convidados para desenhar as performances enquanto estão sendo exibidas pelo espaço. Haverá também uma exposição com a retrospectiva d’ O Cluster, com fotos, vídeos e depoimentos.

Ao longo dos dois dias, as carrapetas serão comandadas pelos DJ’s Janot, Boca do Trombone, Feio & Horroroso e Cau Lopez, da festa SOMM, no sábado, dia 11, e pelos DJ’s Calbuque, Ícaro e Leo Torres, Ratón, Galalau e Nado Leal, no domingo, dia 12, além dos expositores de moda, gastronomia, design, cerâmica, publicações e infantil.

A mostra apresentará filmes que abordam moda, arte, música e gastronomia estimulando a discussão de temas atuais como empreendedorismo feminino, economia criativa, territórios urbanos e imigração. Todas as sessões são seguidas por debate.

Já a festa em comemoração aos 5 anos, o “Viradão O Cluster”, acontecerá no sábado, dia 11, das 21h às 3h, no espaço em frente aos dois centros culturais. O viradão contará com os DJ’s da festa Moo, Diogo Reis e Badenov, e da festa Manie Dansante, com os DJ’s Tesfon e Andrei Yurievitch. A DJ Lili Prohmann também fará parte da programação.

Para 2018, O Cluster, que já possui a sua marca consolidada, continuará explorando novos horizontes. A meta é levar o projeto para Brasília e para o sul do país.

SAN BENEDETTO Penultimo appuntamento al Ventidio Basso per la stagione di prosa 2016/17. È stata la volta del Berretto a Sognagli di Pirandello, testo del 1916, scritto dal grande drammaturgo in dialetto siciliano per l’attore Angelo Musco e riadattato in lingua italiana nel 1923. Fu materia di studio e di elaborazione scenica da parte di Edoardo di Filippo nei primi anni Trenta e vide la pubblicazione – neanche a farlo a posta – solo nel 1988, quando Pirandello fu oggetto dell’attenzione di alcuni notevoli registi tipo Mauro Bolognini.

A distanza di quasi venti anni, uno dei suoi migliori allievi, Sebastiano Lo Monaco, riporta in auge la commedia in due atti che vede come protagonista lo scrivano Ciampa, personaggio dai contorni drammatici, vittima – e alla fine anche carnefice – della società borghese e provinciale da cui proviene.

Vistosi costretto a subire l’infedeltà della moglie, la bella Nina, con il proprio datore di lavoro, il cav. Florica, si trova nell’impossibilità di denunciare l’adulterio per tutelare la propria onorabilità sociale, salvando le apparenze e le convenienze di una falsa morale. Non reagisce neanche di fronte alle denunce reiterate della moglie del Florica, che vorrebbe incastrare i due e che riesce anche, inizialmente, a far scoppiare lo scandalo. Di fronte al rischio della perdita della cosiddetta “reputazione”, Ciampa spinge per far passare la moglie del Florica, Beatrice, come pazza, nonostante i tentativi di dimostrare l’insussistenza della relazione extraconiugale da parte del delegato Spanò.

Come non vedere allora in Ciampa, nello stile secco di Pirandello, unito ad un amaro e, a tratti, caustico umorismo, l’uomo in tutte le sue fragilità, troppo docile e sottomesso, ma anche desideroso di non turbare la pax sociale e, soprattutto, capace di perdono, al di là del perbenismo e del meccanismo pirandelliano delle “tre corde”: la “seria”, la “civile”, la “pazza”?

Ciampa sceglie il compromesso della “civile” che tutto acquieta, mentre toccherà a Beatrice Florica suscitare la “pazza” che – nella migliore traduzione dei fool del teatro di ogni tempo – consente di dire la verità fuori dagli schemi e dalle parole convenzionali. Solo in manicomio, dove verrà fatta sostare qualche mese prima di riprendere il ruolo in società a lei destinato, l’irretita e realistica signora sfogherà la propria rabbia e l’impeto di un monologo che non può avere altra scena, altro luogo di rappresentazione, se non in un non-luogo. Perché la verità è impossibile a dire in una realtà – soprattutto quella siciliana dell’inizio del Novecento dominata ancora dal delitto d’onore –, dove nulla deve veramente cambiare. Tuttavia, la trasposizione ad una generale condizione umana è fin troppo evidente, in un mondo, anche ed in particolare il nostro, in cui ognuno, più o meno surrettiziamente, più o meno subdolamente, va incontro al peso opprimente delle costrizioni e dei falsi miti di facili emancipazioni.

Direi che l’omaggio di Lo Monaco a Bolognini è lampante nella sua messinscena. Il terrazzino siciliano in luogo dei tentacolari e soffocanti interni di Pirandello lo testimonia. Anche la verve drammatica e la pietas impressi al personaggio hanno delle chiare consonanze con i mostri sacri che hanno preceduto il sicilianissimo attore nel ruolo di Ciampa: Turi Ferro, Salvo Randone, lo stesso Eduardo. Un po’ stucchevole la concessione al frizzo da vaudeville in luogo della severa tempra impressa da Pirandello ai personaggi, ieratici “pupi” in mezzo al vuoto delle relazioni.

Notevoli anche le interpretazioni di Maria Rosaria Carli (Beatrice Fiorica), Maria Laura Caselli (Nina Ciampa), Lina Bernardi (Fana), Rosario Petix (Delegato Spanò).

Dopo questa due giorni di recitazioni e dopo le tante repliche succedutesi tra Palermo, Agrigento, Genova, Firenze di questo spettacolo, resta al fondo la certezza, espressa bene da Ciampa, che senza un mimino di lungimirante follia, come metodo di estraniamento dall’avvilente conformismo imposto, “ci mangeremmo tutti come cani”.
