Worlds Adrift was supposed to be a multiplayer game like no other: think Minecraft meets Second Life. Released to some users in 2018, the virtual world promised to take immersive gaming to another level by using a new technology from SoftBank-backed wunderkind, Improbable Worlds Ltd. Players would build ships to explore a universe of floating islands created by other participants. Then last May its creator, Bossa Studios, said it was pulling the plug.
“We fell way short of what the game’s original vision was,” Bossa co-founder Henrique Olifiers explained in a YouTube video. “What we have live today is probably perhaps 20% of the game that we wanted to launch, and it shows.”
Worlds Adrift is one of at least three games using Improbable technology that were pulled last year—a setback for Improbable, which promised to revolutionize gaming by helping developers create complex worlds that rival the real one. There are many reasons games can fail, but two people familiar with the situation say Improbable is struggling in part because it surprised developers with frequent updates that forced game studios to spend more time fixing code than perfecting their products.
Founded about seven years ago by Cambridge University students, Improbable is unprofitable and has only one game running on its platform. Since 2018, the company has lost its chief financial officer, chief legal officer, vice president of people operations and chief creative officer, according to their LinkedIn profiles. One high-level person who left said co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Herman Narula didn’t give executives autonomy to make their own decisions, from hiring to choosing which projects to pursue. Several people who worked with Improbable and requested anonymity to avoid hurting their careers in the insular gaming industry, also said Narula alienated game developers with his temper—shouting orders and complaints on the phone and in meetings.
Improbable has since lured a former Disney executive to become the new CFO, is working with several other studios and is starting to develop its own games. Company spokesman Daniel Griffiths said that it’s not unusual for game developers to decide against a commercial launch after a trial period. Additionally, he said, studios could decide when to implement updates and were allowed to use an older version of the platform for a period of time. The company offered assistance and kept developers updated of changes in its forums and through emails, Griffiths said. He called accusations of shouting and micromanaging “hearsay” and pointed to Narula’s approval rating on the Glassdoor job review site, which was at about 83% when this article was published, and said most reviewers on the site would recommend working at Improbable to a friend.
As for employee attrition, Griffiths said that the company’s voluntary turnover rate is in line with the tech industry, which is high. A report from LinkedIn put employee churn for tech at 13.2%, the highest of all the industries it surveyed. Improbable has an internal tool that lets employees offer anonymous feedback as part of efforts to manage its culture, he said.
The London-based startup’s travails are just the latest setback for SoftBank Group Corp.’s Vision Fund, which in 2017 led an investing group that plowed $502 million into Improbable. Along with Narula, SoftBank is one of two Improbable shareholders that have significant control, with a stake of 25% to 50%, according to Companies House, the U.K. registrar of companies. While some of SoftBank’s bets have paid off, such as its 2018 sale of a majority stake in Flipkart Online Services Pvt Ltd. to Walmart Inc. for $16 billion, several of the Japanese investor’s companies have run into difficulties recently. WeWork pulled its initial public offering, robot pizza maker Zume Pizza Inc. announced it was cutting hundreds of jobs in January, and Indian lodging startup Oyo Hotels is eliminating thousands of employees and losing money after an aggressive expansion. SoftBank didn’t provide a comment.

Narula, the son of Indian construction magnate Harpinder Singh Narula, founded Improbable in 2012 with Rob Whitehead, a fellow graduate student at Cambridge who’s now chief product officer. They’d met in the university’s computer science department where they bonded over a shared passion for games, dreaming of creating huge, detailed virtual worlds where lots of people could play together.
SpatialOS was going to be the tool that made those dreams a reality. It helps developers create complex, simulated environments. Plants and animals continue to grow and reproduce even when nobody’s playing; it can enable programs that mimic how electrical grids, transportation networks and traffic work together. It promised to create elaborate, persistent worlds unlike anything that had been built before.
“We’re in a place today where it is actually possible to create artificial realities,” Narula said in a 2017 interview with Wired. “Basically, we want to build the Matrix,” he joked. SoftBank’s investment that year was one of the biggest in a U.K. startup, on par with Google’s 400 million pound ($511 million) acquisition of artificial intelligence firm DeepMind. Before that, Improbable got early funding from Andreessen Horowitz, which put in about $20 million in 2015, as well as billionaire Li Ka-shing’s Horizons Ventures and Singapore’s state investor Temasek Holdings Pte, which were part of a group that invested $30 million later that year. All told, the company’s attracted more than $600 million in investment.
Even after SoftBank’s investment, Narula retained control of his company, keeping 75% of the voting rights, according to regulatory filings.
People who know Narula describe the 31-year-old executive as unusually charismatic and persuasive, drawing people into his “reality distortion field,” a characteristic famously attributed to Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs. During a Ted talk last year, Narula said the types of games his creation enables will reshape human relationships and identity as people spend more time together in huge, collaborative worlds.
“If we could co-inhabit, co-experience things together, undiminished by physical frailty or by lack of context, create opportunities together—that changes things,” Narula said in the talk. “That bonds people.”
Bossa Studios was Improbable’s first big gaming customer to use its technology platform. The two companies began discussions about what they could build together in 2014, giving some users early access to Worlds Adrift in 2018. It was a major departure for a gamemaker that previously specialized in simpler, social titles, such as I Am Bread, “a beautiful story of one slice of bread’s epic and emotional journey as it embarks upon a quest to become toasted.”
Following Bossa’s vote of confidence, Spilt Milk Studios decided to give Improbable a try with a game called Lazarus. Described as a sci-fi twist on Groundhog Day, the game let thousands of players fight over technology and territories in a world that reset weekly. After about three years letting players test the game, Spilt Milk shut it down in September, saying the game was too expensive to continue and cited the costs of maintaining, running and updating the game as it became more feature-packed.

On its website, Improbable says it costs “slightly more” to use SpatialOS than traditional cloud-hosted, dedicated game servers. Improbable estimates that for the smallest “templates,” hosted in the U.S., developers are paying 8% to 35% more per hour.
Bossa declined to comment and Spilt Milk didn’t reply to requests for comment. Both are focusing on other games.
The biggest failure so far has been Automaton, a SpatialOS game developer which last year went into administration, the British version of bankruptcy. Its Mavericks: Proving Grounds game was going to be a 1,000-player “battle royale” shooter with users ducking in and out of abandoned buildings and running across landscapes to be the last one standing. The game had weather systems, and players left footprints and shell casings behind that let others track them. Mavericks was going to be vastly bigger than similar games, like Fortnite, which typically host a maximum of 100 people at once.
Big, complicated games like Mavericks are expensive to develop, and Improbable offered studios financing ranging from thousands to millions of pounds, the people said. Studios in return agreed to give Narula control over aspects of their business including communications and financials, depending on the deal, people familiar with the arrangements said. Game makers also agreed not to make disparaging comments about Improbable, they said.
Last year, Improbable provided Automaton a credit line of about 5 million pounds that could be converted into equity, according to the administrators’ report. The deal gave Improbable some control over Automaton’s finances. But Improbable became so involved in the game’s development that Automaton felt more like a subsidiary than an independent studio, and employees complained that they didn’t know who was making decisions, people familiar with the episode said.
Then last summer, Improbable told Automaton, which had drawn down less than a third of its credit line, that it would be withdrawing further funding, according to the administrators’ report. No other benefactors materialized, and the firm, which had been profitable through the fiscal year ending in May 2018, entered administration with just 30% of Mavericks development completed. As part of discussions about the company’s insolvency, Improbable said it would be willing to take on about 20 staff who’d been working on the project. The company had 40 employees at the time. Automaton’s founder, James Thompson, now works at Improbable as head of product research. He didn’t respond to requests for comment.
The Improbable loan was meant to be a bridge while Automaton looked for other investors, Griffiths said. The loan was to be used specifically for Mavericks, and did give Improbable some oversight over how the money was spent, but was never meant to fund the game’s entire development, he said. Improbable decided not to extend the loan further after Automaton notified them that it hadn’t secured any additional money, though the company did contribute to a fund for Automaton’s employees who were affected by the administration, he said.
Improbable, which is private, reported that sales rose to 1.22 million pounds for the year ended in May 2019, double the revenue from a year earlier, but less than the 7.8 million pounds in fiscal 2017. Its net loss narrowed to 39.2 million pounds from a 50.4 million loss in 2018 as the company invested in its technology and expanded, adding employees.
In the absence of significant game traffic on its platform, Improbable has said its main revenue source has come from defense industry projects.
The company’s next move is to develop its own games. Improbable has set up studios and bought Midwinter Entertainment, a Washington state-based SpatialOS developer, in September. No games are ready for commercial release, though Midwinter has been play-testing one title, called Scavengers, where opposing players must decide whether to join forces to defeat monsters and survive in the wilderness. The company also acquired game development consultancy the Multiplayer Guys in September and hosting firm Zeuz in February.
There are also a number of other SpatialOS games in development including Seed, a multiplayer game by Klang, and Wizard’s Wrath, a fantasy first-person-shooter from DragonfiAR.
Improbable has also recently attracted a new CFO, Dan Odell, who spent 15 years at Walt Disney Co. where he was finance chief of Maker Studios and Disney Mobile and Social Games, the company said.
But so far, the only game for sale is from NetEase Inc., a Chinese gamemaker that invested more than $50 million in Improbable in 2018. Called Nostos, the multiplayer survival title launched as an early release in December.
“It’s a great team with solid technology, and Herman Narula is a visionary CEO,” NetEase said in an emailed statement. “We chose to work with Improbable for their advanced technical capability and the increasing usability of their technology further confirmed our choice.”
Nostos got three out of five stars on game-distribution platform Steam, with reviewers hailing its promise and beautiful graphics, but complaining that the game is unpolished and buggy. NetEase developers posted in January that they realized there were some problems and had been working on improving performance issues.
“I really want to like the game, I really do but there isn’t much game here,” the top reviewer, the self-styled Trashgoblin, wrote in December.

They say first impressions are the most lasting. But don’t underestimate the sticking power of your second or third impression either; follow-through and follow-up are just as important as that introductory handshake. And of course, there’s plenty of work that goes into preparing for the one big moment that sets everything else in motion. So, let’s take it, step-by-step, to make sure you’re ready to shine at your next edtech networking event.
Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!
Prepare your documents. Both analog and digital records matter. Make sure that your resume, business cards and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and accurately portray your relevant qualifications and experience. Need some help getting your CV up to snuff? Check out our short list of insider tips here.
Do your research. Learn which companies will be present at the event you’re attending. Spend some time looking into each to get familiar with their work in and impact on the space you’re hoping to enter. Where possible, look for overlaps between your personal philosophies and each company’s stated mission, and think of ways to highlight the intersection of ideals. (Don’t fake this; let it happen naturally or not at all.) Be sure to look at current or recent job postings to know which roles they’re hiring for so that you can relate your own attributes to the qualities they’re seeking in their potential candidates.
Practice your elevator pitch. Write up a brief professional bio with relevant highlights. Add a few thoughtful questions that pertain to the hiring companies—their mission, open roles, exciting new projects—and comment specifically on your qualifications in relation to these. Now, practice saying all of this aloud several times over until it feels natural. Make sure it’s concise (under a minute, ideally) and that you can recite it without coming across like an automaton.

Dress the part. This should go without saying, but there’s undeniable wisdom to the old adage about dressing for the job you want. As we already mentioned, that initial mental snapshot can, for better or worse, have an enduring impact, so be sure to show ‘em your good side. Professional but modest attire tells everyone that you mean business.
Get your head in the game. Feeling relaxed and self-assured as you walk into a networking event will help you to perform well and make a lasting impact. Consider engaging in mindfulness exercises to reduce any anxiety you may be feeling in the hours leading up to the event.
It’s Showtime.
Control what you can. On the day of the event, show up early with all of the above items checked off your list, confident in the knowledge that you’ve done everything in your power to prepare for this moment. In addition to your resume and business cards, you might consider bringing along your written bio and any notes gathered in your research so you can review during downtime. This can serve as a helpful reminder of all the hard work you’ve done and also act as a sort of security blanket if you find yourself flustered at any point.
Let go of everything else. You don’t get to decide where or when the event will take place, how crowded it will be, whether food and drink will be available (or edible), or what mood a given hiring manager may be in when you approach. You do, however, get to decide how you’ll react to all of the circumstances you face—at least on the surface. So, greet everyone with a smile, and keep your energy positive. (Oh, and try to nibble on food that won’t splatter!)
Focus on the task at hand. Your objective is to leave this event with promising prospects and the names of recruiters you can contact in the days that follow. Do not allow anything to distract or dissuade you from achieving that goal. Plan to stick around until the very end if necessary, and make the most of any opportunity that presents itself. (You might even circle back as things wind down and offer to help pack up materials. Always good to be remembered as the candidate who came ready to work.) Attend Q&As—and ask questions, network with other job seekers while you’re waiting in line or snacking, and plan to speak with as many hiring managers as you reasonably can, whether they represent those companies you’ve thoroughly researched or some you’ve never heard of before. Don’t forget to collect contact info from everyone you meet!

Stick the Landing.
Reconnect. Follow-up is just as important as attending the event in the first place. Reviving the conversations you started at the event is an essential next step. Reach out to the hiring managers you’ve met to thank them for taking the time to speak with you. Be sure to do this within a business day or two of the event itself so the details are still fresh in everyone’s mind.
Remind. If, indeed, you have made the sort of impression you hoped to on your first encounter, it shouldn’t take much more than a quick reference to some portion of that earlier conversation to spark a hiring manager’s memory. Mention some unique detail from your interaction at the networking event, and include your resume and LinkedIn profile in the message to help them connect the various pieces of your puzzle.
Renew. Now’s the time to gently request some commitment on their part. Ask about setting an informal coffee date or, if the situation feels right, scheduling something more formal such as a phone or video interview. Be flexible, but don’t be afraid to assert yourself. What happens from that point on is mostly up to you.

Many people believe that a network marketing business will grow all by its self and that if the product-line being marketed was spot on there is no need for a network marketing recruiting system. Downlines would simply grow bigger on their own.
If you think the above is true then you have been completely misguided. A key constituent for the growth and success of any downline is having a network marketing recruiting system.
I believe the underlying reason for the lack of recruiting by new members is there is no system in place to show them. I am confident after reading the following tips you’ll be able to recognize a winning network marketing recruiting system when you come across one.
A winning recruiting system isn’t one where the person at the top is a recruiting automaton enrolling the multitudes.
A winning recruiting system is one where duplication exists. Duplication is sustainable where the whole group grows by everyone enrolling someone new. Without everyone achieving success the network would not expand, but instead, become paralyzed.
A winning system does not just enlighten people how to recruit or influence others into joining and throw them out into the marketplace to sink or swim. There should be no secrets within the organization for the downline to duplicate. When building a downline, using a network marketing system success and knowledge which is built into the system trickle down to all levels, thus preparing them for their impending success as long as they don’t give up.
In other words for those at the top to have success, the bottom will need to succeed as well. Without the occurring, the MLM business model will not increase exponentially and would really just be someone at the top selling stuff.
The system allows the top sponsor to impart to their downline the philosophies and knowledge that gave them success. This is why an MLM recruiting system is from time to time mistakenly referred to as a replicated system.
This works much like a franchise system where the franchisor can hand over their success formula to the franchise. One of the very effective things about a network marketing recruiting system is that the downline ultimately benefits from the experiences of the upline founder, as they have traveled the road the downline is now traveling.
The duplication that is a key goal for setting up a network marketing recruiting system is only doable when the upline leaders learning can be passed on to the downline, so they get it, without alienating them.

The current version of Agorapulse was released in November 2013.
As you can imagine with a 4-year-old SaaS product in a fast moving industry, the backend needed a revamp to help us move faster. The user interface was in need for a serious makeover.
At just four years old, our product for social media management was aging — and it was time to make big changes.
We started this process in the summer of 2016 with the backend. This part was done and released in February 2017. You didn’t see any change but these changes streamlined our code so much that we now can deliver new, innovative features twice as fast as before.
Since March, we’ve worked our butts off to implement the new design and the new front end. Every single pixel of the app has been rethought, re-engineered, and recoded with a new framework. Needless to say, that this was a heck of a task for our tech team.
During this neverending 12-month process, we have not served you as well as we’d like in terms of stuff you can see on the front end. Because all our energy was on this new release, you didn’t see much in the way of new features or improvements.
But this long development tunnel is now over and we’ll be releasing the new Agorapulse at the end of this month. If you don’t know, you can access the beta here: http://ift.tt/2iq6fQ1
To help you better understand what to expect, I’ve made a list of all the major new features and improvements.

1. A New Inbox
1.1 A new design and workflow
We’ve redesigned the inbox to make it easier to scan. Reviewed items will now disappear in real time from the “to review” filter to give you more clarity.
1.2 New filters for more granularity
The filters offered in our inbox now offer a lot more options: see all the messages reviewed by a specific team member or those assigned to a specific team member. It’s another way to check on your team’s work with ease.
1.3 Saved replies
You can now create “saved replies” or canned responses for each of your social profiles and save a TON of time when using the same responses over and over again. This a long-awaited feature that we’re thrilled to finally deliver.
1.4 Better emoji picker
Many of you have complained about the behavior of our emoji picker. It’s been improved big time. Not only the emojis are bigger now, but you can also search for the ones you need!
1.5 Translation feature
Don’t you love when fans and followers engage with you? But when they speak a language you don’t, things get a little tricky. With our new “translate” feature, you can see their message in your own language in one click. Pretty convenient!
1.6 “Always On” user profile
Whenever you’re looking at a tweet, a comment or a private message, you’ll now see the full profile of its author on the right. Knowing who you’re dealing with is a real plus. But there’s more to it than just seeing their name, photo, and bio. You can also tag them and see relevant tag to quickly gauge how important they are to your business. You can also favorite them to retrieve their info in a pinch.
Last but certainly not least, you can expand their profile and see all their past interactions with you. This is a huge time saver for teams using the same dashboard for social media marketing or customer support.
1.7 Real time team activity visibility
It will definitely be a game changer for large teams. On each social profile, you can now see who else is currently connected at the same time as you (top right of the screen), but more importantly, you can see who is viewing what and who is currently responding to what!
No more stepping on each other’s toes.
2. New Reports
2.1 New stats and design
If you liked our reports, you should love the new ones. They are offer more data, show the evolution of each metric over time and, in my opinion, look sleeker. Here’s what I mean by sleek.
2.2 Content report
You now have access to a separate content report for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. See all your posts for the selected period and sort them by any metric you want. Need to see your post with the most engagement? Click on engagement and you’re done. We’ll provide the ability to export this in .csv very soon.
2.3 New PowerPoint design
Our PowerPoint reports have also been revamped. They now contain all the metrics and graphs you see on the web version. They also look great on Keynote (if you’re a Mac addict) and Google Slides. We’re planning to let you upload your own logo automatically very soon too.
3. New Publishing Engine
3.1 “Always on” previews
Our preview feature was really cool, but it was hard to find.
They are now always visible and easily accessible. Need to know how your post will look like on each social network? You’re all set!
3.2 In context editing/customization
Our preview feature also offered the possibility to customize your post for each of your social networks. Another super helpful feature we released before any other vendor out there. It was great but a bit hidden.
You can now edit your preview in context, for each of your networks. Just click on the text start editing. What you’ll see is what you’ll get on each network. You can even add mentions on Facebook and Twitter with ease.
3.3 Check your content calendar before hitting “publish”
One of the main goals of with this new release is to give you greater control and clarity over your social media management.
We designed our dashboard to instantly show you:
what’s left to review in your inbox
the exact preview of your post before posting them, and
exactly when your post will be published and how that fits with your existing content calendar!
If you repeat your content or add additional scheduled slots, you will visually see when each post will go out. You’ll find it convenient to make sure you’re posting each one at the best possible time.
3.4 Ability to repeat scheduled content
This option will allow you to repeat a post a certain number of time and set a specific time gap between each post. It’s ideal for:
promoting an event taking place at a specific date and repeating it a set number of time
announcing a repeating event taking place on the same day and time every week or every month
wishing Happy Birthday to one of your followers by repeating it every 12 months!
3.5 Ability to create multiple scheduled slots at once
If the repeat option doesn’t give you the flexibility you need, try our option to manually add multiple scheduled slots. Add as many additional days and times to your initial scheduled slot.
3.6 A brand new queue system (with advanced evergreen content requeuing)
If you prefer to use a content queue when posting, we’ve also revamped entirely this part of our publishing feature.
The first addition is the ability to add your post to the next available queue slots (if your content is time sensitive, for example). Fear not: we still offer the option of putting content at the last slot of your queue.
The knock on using a queue is that often, you don’t know when queued items will publish and seen by the masses. We too found that annoying so we did something about it.
With the schedule feature, we give you clarity by displaying your content calendar. Here you’ll see exactly your queued post will be published.
Last but not least, you can now requeue your post a specific number of times. You can also go full automaton and set a piece of content indefinitely. If you choose the latter, you can set an expiration date to make sure you won’t be posting outdated content months from today. (A great way to avoid a social media fail.)
As with the repeat or reschedule options, you can set these requeuing options social profile by social profile. You want to queue once on your Facebook page, three times on LinkedIn, and unlimited times on Twitter? Go for it.
3.7 Easy content tagging and content tagging reports
You can tag your content as you publish it — great feature to measure the performance of your content by topic or campaign.
Thanks to this tagging option, we will show you a report comparing the performance in reach and engagement for each of your topics.
Great to A/B test various topics or to track the performance of campaigns you’re running and report on them, don’t you think?
3.8 Ability to assign content for approval
If you create content as a team and have a specific workflow, you’re going to love this feature. Let’s say you create the first draft of the post, then need your designer to add a visual to it, then need a an editor to proofread or “OK” every post.
Simply create your posts, set the day and time (or add to the queue) and then assign them to your designer. Once your designer has added the visuals (he’ll get a notification for each post assigned to her), she can then assign them to the editor who will, in turn, proofread and approve the content to be published.
Probably the simplest and most efficient way to match any content publishing workflow.
3.9 Ability to duplicate already published content (or failed or scheduled/queued)
Failed posts happen. Whether you had API issues, problems with your content (video size, image format), duplicate content by accident or just a bug on our side (rare), you had no way to get back on track and that was frustating.
Well, can now retrieve a failed-to-launch post in 1 click!
You can also duplicate any content in one click, queued, scheduled or already published.
4. Redesigned Team Management
Our team management feature was good but not great. We knew it as we were using it too!
We’ve revamped it entirely. We made it super easy to invite new team members but also existing team members to a newly added social profile. Large teams and agencies are going to LOVE this improvement.
The way we display your team has also been improved big time. You now see it by team member (and not by social profile) which makes understanding responsibilities much easier. It’s also easier to remove a team member.
5. What’s Coming Next?
As I mentioned earlier, our new technology framework will allow us to move much faster and deliver the features and improvements that you deserve. Here are the features you can expect shortly after this initial launch:
