player: John Stones words: 712 request: John Stones - you / your - 500 - 750 words - Going gift shopping with him while you are pregnant so you end up buying things also for the baby, all so sweet and fluff please
Tumblr media
“We could just get everything online, you know?” John says as he pulls up his hood a little more and tweaks his beanie beneath it.
It was cold in Manchester. Freezing perhaps. And it wasn’t even winter yet. The icy wind doesn’t help, creating a colder environment than it is because of it. Frost lays thicker on the ground, giving the illusion of a thin snowfall. It was still slippy as hell and John made sure that you remained standing upwards.
“It’s not the same. We get enough deliveries on a day to day basis. Christmas should be more personal.” You counter, and pull out your phone to check, once more, which store was next. It’s a list you’ve checked far too many times that you should have memorised by now but it’s always best to look again. You’d hate to leave anyone off and ideally, you’d like to wrap it all up today if possible.
One of John’s bodyguards has taken care of one lot of bags, taking them back to the car so that you two can concentrate on remaining on your feet and not having to worry about leaving some items behind or struggling with too many. John has shown a little enthusiasm when entering certain stores but for the most part, he’s hoping not to be noticed and trying to get through this with minimal damage to his bank account.
You pause outside Next, noticing that they have a Next baby section in this one. “I didn’t realise the baby is on your list.”
“You of all people should know that the baby is always on the list.” you reply and wiggle your shoulders in a happy dance while throwing signals with your thumb as you walk in backwards while grinning and John follows obediently while shaking his head.
He knows as well as you that this is going to be one of the times that you drop the most amount of money. Though you do try to be smart about it, you’ve been around enough babies to know how quickly they grow and so know how pointless it is to drop too much money on the early stages of their life when they outgrow the clothes far too quickly. Newborn and first sizes should really be kept to the bare basics. Plenty of vests and baby grows. Anything over a month to 3 months you can have a little fun with but this stage will also be outgrown far too quickly.
Quite a few people you know, including several brands thanks to John, have already bought and sent quite the haul of newborn clothes, so that’s one less stage for you to stockpile. With Christmas sales in full swing, you fully plan to utilise them for the upcoming year, buying quite a few for the age groups past 3-6 months. You didn’t want to be caught short but were happy to pick up a few extras if needed. Of course, the sales wouldn’t count for certain seasons and they would be picked up at a later date.
You scan the rows and tables of clothes, eyes searching every different set as you pick up a few and hold it in the air to examine.
“I prefer that one,” you hear John say and watch as his arm extends past you to touch at the fabric of the one he’s chosen.
“Yeah, me too.” you nod in agreement as you turn the item this way and that to get a better look at it.
“I still can’t believe that she’ll be this size.” There’s a softness in his voice as he takes it from you with one hand and drapes it over his other as he tries to envision a very real, squirming baby in it. You turn to face him and grin as he holds it up to your bump, an action you do frequently when hanging up or folding the clothes in her nursery as you put them away. She’s not due for another month and nesting is well and truly kicking in now for you. Sometimes you find yourself sitting on the floor, burying your face into the soft fabrics and taking in the smell of the baby softener.
Unbeknown to you, so does John.

"HAD REVOLVER IN POSSESSION, MUST PAY FINE," Hamilton Spectator. May 20, 1943. Page 24. ---- Minor Lee Fined $150 By Magistrate Burbidge To-day ---- INCIDENT IN HOUSE ---- Minor Lee, Chinese laundryman, of 378 York street, was fined $150 and costs or three months for carrying an unregistered revolver by Magistrate H. A. Burbidge to-day, but still unexplained is his reason for pointing the weapon at a girl in a home near his laundry the other night.
His Worship voiced one theory: "The cave man used to make love with a stone hammer in one hand - perhaps it is the modern version to make love with a revolver in one hand," he suggested.
Detective Charles Boecker told the court that he was called to the York street home, the night of May 11, and found accused sitting on the arm of a chesterfield in which a man and a girl were seated. A 32 revolver was found in Lee's pocket, and five shells in another pocket, the detective said.
The complainant told the detective that Lee had entered the home -he had been there on previous occasions and took the revolver from his pocket and pointed it at her. She grappled with him, managed to take the weapon away, but he recovered it. Nothing more was done until the police arrived.
Lee said that he had found the revolver in a trunk following the death of his father a few weeks ago. It has not been registered, according to word received from the R. C.M.P. at Ottawa.
"I keep it for protection, because I have to work late at night," Lee said. Asked why he had taken the gun to the home that night, accused said: "I heard shouting in there." He was bound over for two years to keep the peace.
Convicted of being in care or control of a car while intoxicated, Alex. J. Shaver, of 105 Kensington avenue, was sentenced to 21 days in jail, to date from May 14. A reckless driving count was withdrawn.
Committed For Trial Dr. Roswell Park, of 712 Main street east, and Philip Brooks, 27, of Aldershot, were committed for trial on a joint charge of abortion.
Frank Baker, of 103 Stuart street west, was fined $50 of one month on a drunk charge.
Three Years "This is a Christian community, and sacrilege is a serious thing," His Worship commented, Imposing a term of three years in the penitentiary on Thomas Smith, 33, of 390 Bay street north [pictured]. Smith came up for sentence on a charge of stealing a large Bible from Christ's Church Cathedral recently.
"He is deserving of no leniency and this offence does not warrant any," asserted Harvey McCulloch, crown attorney. "There should be a deterrent sentence imposed to stop this sort of thing."
"My only worry was whether I should make it a reformatory sentence," His Worship said. "The lads in the reformatory should not have this type of thing imposed on them," replied them," replied Mr. McCulloch, referring to Smith. Smith's record, which dates from 1927, lists two previous penitentiary sentences.
He told the court: "I am very sorry about the way I have lived. I went into the church because I was beat with liquor."
Harold D. Wilson, 25, of 448 Cannon street east, was bound over under heavy bond when he appeared for sentence on charges of forgery and uttering.
A charge of theft from his employer the Otis-Fensom Elevator Co., Ltd. was denied by James Kennedy, 41, of 87 Wexford avenue south. The hearing was adjourned to Tuesday at the request of the crown.
A breach of the Sales Tax Act charge, laid against William Vogl, 27, of 181 Jackson street west, was adjourned a week.
Told by Harry Trusdale, probation officer, that work had been obtained for them. His Worship suspended sentence on vagrancy charges for Henry Falstead, 53, of Kingston; John Grech, 41, of Welland; Percy Crosby, 50, of Toronto, and George Porter, 42, of Sarnia.
[Smith was 33, married, with four kids, and was an English immigrant who came to Canada in his infancy. He had been released from Collin's Bay Penitentiary in October 1941 and had been working as a pipe-fitters helper in a factory since then. He had also been in the penitentiary in the early 1930s, and before that several times in the reformatory. He was convict #7312 this time at Kingston, and worked in the Kitchen. The Minister of Justice decided to vary his sentence to two years in September 1943, probably on appeal, and he was transferred to the Guelph Reformatory and released in early 1945.]

Pentagon closes $7.8 billion deal with Lockheed for 126 F-35 jets
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 04/30/2023 - 20:30 in Military
Lockheed Martin received a $7.8 billion contract on Friday for 126 of its F-35s, completing a $30 billion contract to provide the fighters to the U.S. military and allies, the Pentagon announced.
It was the final installment of the megacontract for a total of 398 F-35 jets. The latest batch of the world's most expensive weapons system includes 77 planes for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marines, as well as smaller numbers for the allies Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, Finland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland and Denmark.
Tumblr media
The funding was postponed until Congress approved the final version of the government spending bill for this fiscal year in December. Friday's award is the latest F-35 contract in what is designed to be a $412 billion acquisition program for about 3,000 planes to the U.S. and other countries.
The concession - the 17th production contract - culminates months of intense negotiations for three production batches under which the Department of Defense reduced the number of jets ordered. Before the start of negotiations, the Department of Defense had said it could buy up to 485 of the jets.
Boosting Lockheed
Tumblr media
On the positive side for Lockheed, the international profile of the F-35 has never been higher. Global interest has increased due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and increased tensions with China. South Korea has indicated that it wants more jets, and two U.S. Air Force F-35 units have carried out deterrent patrols in Europe.
The F-35 accounted for 26% of Lockheed's $15.1 billion sales in the first quarter. On March 30, 899 jets were delivered to customers in the U.S. and abroad, Lockheed said.
The signing of the contract is a boost for Lockheed, whose aerospace division has been struggling with supplier problems and rising costs after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Tumblr media
Twelve military services around the world have declared the F-35 operational, and the Pentagon and Lockheed, based in Bethesda, Maryland, have reduced a list of unresolved problems.
The number of “open disability reports” is now 831, the F-35 program office said, down from 845 in September 2021. At the beginning of last year, the total was 864, including eight defects of "Category 1" considered the most serious to fly, safety of flight operations or both.
Tumblr media
On the negative side, the excess costs in a project to upgrade the cabin computer hardware increased an additional 236 million. The projected cost of the project is now almost double the original contract of $712 million.
The delivery of the first F-35 with updated hardware, crucial for the advanced capabilities of the fighter, can be postponed for another year, until April 2024 - placing it 16 months later than originally planned.

CJ court watch - J. Thomas
Pro Sinistram Publica reported on 13apr23 that rich conservative Harlan Crow bought a house and two lots for  “$133,363 from three co-owners — [Justice Clarence] Thomas, his mother and the family of Thomas’ late brother.”  The sale was in 2014.  The house was on E. 32 St, Savannah, GA  31401.
Zillow shows a house at 712 E 32nd St with a value of $165,000.  The house at 658 E 34th St, Savannah, GA 31401 is listed at $185,000.  Some of the houses in the area are much more expensive.  The point is that the sale appears to have been a fair market transaction, not a sham.
J. Thomas did not report the sale.  Pub.L 95-521, 92 Stat. 1851, Oct. 26, 1978 §  302(a)(5) required him to report any real estate sales exceeding $1,000. He should have reported it.
Pro Pubica also had the vapors b/c J. Thomas did not report travel and parties with Crow.  §  302(a)(2) says J. Thomas was not required to report  “any food, lodging, or entertainment received as personal hospitality of any individual.”
Crow released a statement acknowledging that he and his wife have been friends with J. Thomas and his wife. He acknowledges that he hosts J. Thomas and his wife at parties.  J. Thomas says they are friends and that colleagues on the court have always told him that personal hospitality is not reportable.  He probably should have reported the travel per § 302(a)(2).
https://storage.courtlistener.com/us/federal/judicial/financial-disclosures/3200/clarence-thomas-disclosure.2014.pdf is the 2014 report in question.  The form requests no information about gifts, real estate sales, or travel.
Compare J. Thomas’s report to the standard executive branch report -  (OGE Form 278e) -   The executive branch report is much more detailed and specifically requests information about gifts, property sales, and travel.
In other news, politically connected conservatives chill with politically connected conservatives.
+++
The leftist campaign to force Justice Clarence Thomas from the US Supreme Court let its inner clown out when the executive director of the AstroTurf smear group Fix the Court inadvertently released the names of its donors to a Washington Examiner reporter.***
First, there is no widespread support for Fix the Court. In 2021, it received just over $290,000. Of that amount, $286,000 came from two grants: the previously mentioned $111,000 from the New Venture Fund and  $175,000 from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. In 2022, Fix the Court pulled in nearly $196,000. The three main contributors ponied up $185,000. The climate alarmist Rockefeller Brothers Fund gave $50,000, the Lebowitz-Aberly Family Foundation donated $35,000, and the big loser was the Weinberg McCann Foundation which was tapped for $100,000.
Why do I say big loser? Well, of the $486,000 Fix the Court has raised in the last two years, $242,000 went to its executive director as salary. In 2022, $162,000 of the $195,000 raised went into Mr. Roth’s pocket. As a result, Fix the Court looks much more like a jobs program for one guy with a website than a non-profit.*** https://redstate.com/streiff/2023/05/17/director-of-clarence-thomas-and-brett-kavanaugh-smear-group-begs-for-mercy-after-releasing-confidential-documents-n747428

New Post has been published on https://primorcoin.com/opensea-announces-smart-nft-marketplace-seaport/
OpenSea Announces Smart NFT Marketplace Seaport
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On May 20, OpenSea unveiled Seaport, a brand new Web3 NFT marketplace for trading popular token collections. The new decentralized protocol is not just for OpenSea, but all developers, content creators, and collectors can build on it.
Seaport is taking a different approach to the standard model of NFT trading, which involves a platform facilitating a deal between seller and buyer.
Sellers can agree to supply a number of items in the ERC-20, ERC-721, or ERC-1155 format, which will be known as the “offer.” The “consideration” is when several items are received by the buyer. However, the process will be automated and governed by the decentralized smart contract, according to the announcement.
“Every Seaport listing consists of the same basic structure, including an improved EIP-712 signature payload that clearly outlines what can be spent and what will be received back by whom.”
Introducing Seaport, a brand new web3 marketplace protocol for safely and efficiently buying and selling NFTs.
With an emphasis on flexibility and optimizations, Seaport has been built to support new and evolving use-cases for where NFTs are heading.https://t.co/3lUQIQm0km
— OpenSea (@opensea) May 20, 2022
Automated NFT Marketplace
The announcement explained how exactly Seaport would facilitate the transactions by using “fulfillments” to ensure they are processed correctly.
It added that the new system eliminates redundant transfers, which are usually the most gas-intensive, and allows for “novel and efficient transactions.”
There are several other functions such as “zones” and “channels” that improve the transaction process, allow for bartering, and prevent abuse of the system. Seaport also supports “tipping,” which allows alternative interfaces to include their own fees and facilitates dynamic listings.
The firm added that the platform is completely decentralized and open source:
“OpenSea does not control or operate the Seaport protocol — we will be just one, among many, building on top of this shared protocol.”
Seaport has been audited by OpenZeppelin, and they are also starting a two-week audit contest with code4rena with a $1 million prize pool.
NFT Ecosystem Outlook
The NFT space has contracted in terms of sales this month as crypto markets continue to take a beating. According to market tracker Nonfungible, USD sales figures are down from over $60 million per day in early May to around $25 million as of May 20.
The number of sales was more than 100,000 per day at the beginning of the month, but that had slumped to around 23,000 by the end of last week.
Cryptoslam reports that the Otherdeed Metaverse land NFT collection has been the most popular over the past seven days, with around $27 million in secondary sales for the period.

attended to his letters; a course of reducing exercises
or did you hear commentaries [     ] over the radio? I don’t have the time to do it. Needed another line, and thought Samuel Beckett might provide. Search yielded no Beckett, but the above passage, fitting in its way and no more nor less ambiguous than anything else here. something recent — Giuseppe Caccavale « Projet Paul Celan », Residence Concordia, Parigi gennaio-ottobre 2020; testo e foto dell’artista. (1 February 2021)
method
A friend reminded me, recently, that I don’t have time (for what is irrelevant here). Have been ruminating on (avoiding the consequences of) this, since. And thinking too about the place dimension of time, as discussed by Veronica O’Keane in her The Rag and Bone Shop : How we make memories and memories make us (2021) — “One’s sense of time is inseparable from events, but this is a sense of time. Might time have something to do with place cells?” (107) and “The whole concept of time is generally unhelpful in understanding science, be it physics or neuroscience... From the perspective of recording events, the present is consciousness. In a seemingly ironic twist, I myself think that the only place that time does not exist is in the moment of consciousness...” (113)
The encountered lines — all included above from my search in pre-1923 sources — have found their respective though non-chronological places in a kind of rocking, panning motion, in which sediments settle into their respective ripples / couplets.
Would, could, does this — sequence — work (whatever “work” means) without the anchorings / tetherings / bibliographic wastefull(ness; line 9 above) that follow it? They were needed in the making, anyway, and for there to be sufficient distraction for the making to sustain.
all subject to change.

The post where Y’all question my life choices (AKA the money post)
I rounded up the numbers so I wouldn’t have to count change.
$45 Fabric - I got 5 yards of navy quilt backing fabric (108” wide)
fabric tends to be 45”, 60”, and 108” widths. To not have a seam running down the middle, I needed 108” which tends to be a quilting fabric item.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/553055774/108in-wide-quilt-backing-solid-navy-900?ref=yr_purchases
$45 Batting - I managed to find a queen size silk (!!) batting on mega sale at an etsy store that specializes in it. (for the non fabric people - batting is the fluffy bit in the quilt that makes the designs look good and have dimension.)
https://www.etsy.com/listing/781938438/tuscany-silk-quilt-batting-queen-size-96?ref=yr_purchases
$26 Floss and safety pins - 10 skeins total, 6 of each main color. gold, white, and gray tended to be the colors while I was researching. I’m going to use DMC 729 (gold) DMC 334 (med blue) and DMC 712 (cream) since I want it to look slightly faded but jazzy? Think something fabulous from a trunk that has faded, but was really bright at first. I also got a bunch of safety pins to “pin baste” with, but I might just baste it. (those were $6)
They sell floss 2 skeins at a time which is great for big projects.
https://www.etsy.com/shop/southpassbeads
$0 Thread - I plan on using either navy or white for the quilting part of this, and I’ll see if I can use what I already have.
$96 Sulky peel and stick - you need 80 (!) sheets to print out the pattern, so 7 packets of 12 ... that were $15 dollars each!! This was the most expensive item. I had one packet on hand that I swear didn't cost that much when I got it, so I ordered 6 this time.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1164617100/12-sheets-85-x-11-sulky-water-soluble?ref=yr_purchases
$15 big embroidery frame (11”x11”) - so I can get more done before having to move the quilt around on the frame. Found a PVC pipe type thing that can be taken apart for storage, will report back findings on usefulness as a quilting frame.
https://www.etsy.com/listing/1093231054/q-snap-plastic-needlework-frame-681117-q?ref=yr_purchases
45 + 45 + 26 +96 +15 = $227. Even if I devalue my work and time by not counting it, this is going to be an expensive project.

RECENT NEWS, RESOURCES & STUDIES, May 2, 2021
Tumblr media
Welcome to my latest summary of recent ecommerce news, resources & studies including search, analytics, content marketing, social media & Etsy. If you are interested in Etsy news, please read my top story below, as there seem to be a lot of changes afoot. (There is also a section general Etsy news below that.)
If you have any questions or news you would like me to cover, please drop me a line here on Tumblr, reply to this post, email me, or contact me on Twitter.
TOP NEWS & ARTICLES
Something is brewing at Etsy: as of April 26, people in almost all non-Etsy Payments countries “temporarily” cannot open new shops. They hid this development in a Help file, but someone reported it to Ecommerce Bytes, which garnered more attention. Why does this matter? Currently, Etsy Payments (EP) is only available in 44 countries; i.e., most of the world cannot currently open a new shop on Etsy. [Updated May 3 2021] Apparently the only exception is India; see the screenshot below, which someone kindly sent me:
Tumblr media
(please click to see it in more detail, or check it out on Twitter)
There was no warning, and no published end date, even though they say it is temporary. Of course, they say it is to protect buyers, but they said that when they removed standalone PayPal too, and we know that was just about making more money. It’s possible they are adding new payment companies to the backend which will be able to operate in most of these countries, greatly expanding their take from EP. The first quarter report is scheduled for May 5, and that is often the time they announce new or expanded income streams. Expect to learn more sometime around then. In the meantime, watch for payment glitches.
It is also possible that the above situation is related to the glut of bad press Etsy has garnered recently. They released a blog post on April 29th, explaining how they plan on spending $40 million extra this year on marketplace enforcement. Turns out, they were just trying to get out in front of an April 30th report from Business Insider [paywall], which describes 800 policy violations in listings on the site. You can get the details in articles from Engadget and Gizmodo. This might get more traction, as both Insider and Gizmodo noted it is very easy to find more prohibited and even illegal items on Etsy.
“After Etsy deleted the listings the outlet identified, Insider reports that it was still able to find several others for ivory products, brass knuckles, mandrake roots, tools for using cannabis concentrates, mass-produced products, and other banned items. We poked around Etsy’s marketplace as well, and within a few minutes found a bunch of prohibited products, including a vintage ivory bracelet put up for sale as recently as March, several weapons that are plainly marketed as such, and a shop with more than 1,000 reviews selling all manner of spells for attracting love, wealth, and what have you.” [from Gizmodo]
Note that Etsy has also changed the wording of its Prohibited Items policy to include new definitions for counterfeit items. See discussion on this Reddit thread. Etsy is also still getting negative attention for allowing fake COVID-19 vaccine cards to be posted for sale. Vice has the most recent article, and Forbes has an overview of this hot new scam area.
So, is all of this linked, and if yes, what does it mean? Etsy hasn't cared about enforcing its listing policies for many years, as long as the media doesn't notice. Heck, you can still buy gift boxes of manufactured candy in thousands of shops, which is expressly prohibited, yet reporting never removes them. Is the media finally noticing enough to make a difference, or is Etsy really embarking on a huge cleanup that includes (at least temporarily) banning people from most countries from opening new shops? We will likely learn more this month, and perhaps even this week.
ETSY NEWS
Etsy says that shoppers are searching for “eco-friendly” items more often this year, and released a trend report on the topic. Insights include “42% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for reusable cotton menstrual pads...100% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for reusable straws...76% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for food covers...54% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for reclaimed wood shelves...176% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for environmentally friendly candles...712% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for eco-friendly tissue paper...285% YoY increase in searches on Etsy for vintage hoodies.” Definitely read the report if you want to know everything that people are looking for.
They also did a UK-based article on trends in outdoor items. Search tips of note: “2,644% YoY increase in UK searches on Etsy for patio furniture...Over 1,000% YoY increase in UK searches on Etsy for spring wreaths...1,266% YoY increase in UK searches on Etsy for garden lights or lanterns” It is hard to say how much these trends can be extrapolated to other countries, as the UK appears to have embraced online shopping much more during the pandemic than some other countries (see story below).
The latest Etsy Success podcast [transcript with podcast links] covers their buyer research, as well as a few questions from sellers. Not much here, except for the fact that they do expect wedding sales to pick up.
Reverb had a really large data breach, exposing the personal information of over 5 million customers.
As mentioned above, Etsy’s first quarter financial results for 2021 will be out on May 5th.
Apparently, Etsy is testing videos in search; here is a forum thread on the topic.
SEO: GOOGLE & OTHER SEARCH ENGINES
Here is an intermediate/semi-advanced article on ecommerce websites and common SEO issues. If you don’t do any of your own coding and don’t have much control over site design and indexing, skip the first 3 points.
Link building: what is a high-quality link? (you know, the type we are always told we need.) Moz’s Whiteboard Friday covers the basics. [video & transcript]
If you are new to blogging or writing instructional articles for your website, this template for writing for both readers and for Google SEO should be very useful.
Google introduced an algorithm update for product reviews starting April 8th. If you review other products on your website or blog, you will want to get the details here and here.
The Google page experience algorithm update has been delayed; it is now going to start in June and be completed by the end of August. That and more is covered in the Google Search News video for April. [YouTube video with highlights and links in the comments]
Yes, you can use SEO to get more attention to your podcasts. Here’s a detailed how-to.
Focussing on YouTube? Here are some tools for YouTube SEO. (Some are free or have free versions.)
There are probably as many Google SEO myths as there are Google algorithm factors, but Google saying something isn’t true isn’t always proof it is a myth. With that in mind, please enjoy this summary of 15 Google ranking factor myths (some of which are in dispute).
[semi-advanced content] The current state of long tail SEO has changed due to both searcher behaviour and Google, and that has led to both more and less opportunity. [Google redirecting results to what it thinks the searcher really wanted, even when the exact words aren’t on the page that they rank first, reminds me of what is happening with Etsy search lately.]
(CONTENT) MARKETING & SOCIAL MEDIA (includes blogging & emails)
Facebook still has the most traffic in the US, compared to all other social networks, but YouTube is even more popular. YouTube and Reddit are the only established major platforms with significant growth since 2019. You can read more details from the actual study here.
Instagram is working on new ways for creators to make money on the platform, not just those with business accounts.
HubSpot put together a summary of how the algorithms work on Facebook, Twitter, And Instagram.
Reddit appears to be testing a group voice chat feature, which would compete with Clubhouse.
TikTok isn’t just for young people; parents and grandparents are now on the platform too.
Twitter’s timeline algorithm (active if you are seeing “Top Tweets” on your feed) tends to ignore a lot of external links, and more than half of the posts can be “suggestions” from people you don’t follow. I’ve noticed lately that Twitter rarely makes suggestions in my chronological timeline anymore, except when I don’t have any activity for over 24 hours.
Twitter obeyed an order from the government of India and removed several dozen tweets which criticized the government’s COVID-19 response. The tweets in question can still be seen outside of India, however.
ONLINE ADVERTISING (SEARCH ENGINES, SOCIAL MEDIA, & OTHERS)
Understanding the definition of “return on ad spend” (ROAS) is the first step to making sure your ROAS is good for your business. “in general, a ROAS of 4:1 ($4 in revenue for every $1 spent) or higher usually suggests a successful campaign. But keep in mind that this is just a benchmark, not something to swear by. Some businesses need a ROAS of 10:1 to stay profitable, while others can do well with just 3:1...A large profit margin means you can continue the campaign with a low ROAS, whereas smaller margins demand a relatively higher ROAS and low advertising costs to maintain profitability. ROAS can also vary by platform. For instance, the average ROAS for Google Ads is 2:1.”
10% of money spent on US online ads last year went to Amazon, but they are still well behind Google. Meanwhile, Facebook’s ad revenue was up 46% in the first quarter of 2021, Google’s was up 32% & Bing's increased by 17%.
eBay launched the ability to automate their Promoted Listings.
ECOMMERCE NEWS, IDEAS, TRENDS
Payment processor Stripe purchased TaxJar, with a plan to integrate it into Stripe. This would provide new options for calculating & filing US taxes to Stripe customers. TaxJar will also have a standalone version for the moment. While TaxJar does do US taxes for business from many countries, it has almost nothing available regarding non-US taxes at this time. (Someone needs to do this for other taxes including UK VAT registration, since they don’t have a minimum threshold for micro businesses, and are no longer in the EU, so won’t be included in the new VAT collection rules come July 1. How many sole proprietors want to be registering for & remitting all of these countries by ourselves?)
In related news, Florida has joined most other US states in requiring online businesses to collect state sales tax even if they have no base in Florida. Missouri is now the only state with sales tax but without such a law, and they are working on it.
eBay has rolled out its new coupon code tool. Also, they released lower than expected projections for the current quarter, which has disappointed the analysts.
Meanwhile, Amazon hugely beat its first quarter expectations, and projects the growth will continue. Prime Day will be in June instead of July this year; date to come.
Also, Amazon is letting its larger brands email customers directly, which was previously not allowed. Customers do have to follow the brand to receive these messages.
Mailchimp will soon be offering ecommerce stores, including a free option that has a 2% transaction fee, or more advanced versions with lower transaction fees for $10 and $29 a month respectively. US and UK customers will be able to start a store as of May 18th.
Shopify probably doesn’t feel that threatened by the new competition, as their first quarter revenue was up more than 100% over the previous year. Note it is estimated they got 8.6% of US ecommerce revenue in the quarter, while some believe that eBay, Apple and Amazon lost market share.
BUSINESS & CONSUMER STUDIES, STATS & REPORTS; SOCIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY, CUSTOMER SERVICE
Mastercard says that people worldwide spent $900 billion more online last year compared to 2019. They expect the ecommerce trend of grocery shopping and bargain hunting to continue more than other retail areas.
Regions that had stricter lockdowns during the pandemic may have had a greater increase in ecommerce activity; this report compares the US and the UK.
Generation Z is likely to stop shopping with you if your site has issues. “Seventy-one percent of respondents want the experience to be personalized, and 76% said their favorite brands should reward them for their business, the survey found.”

or immediate release: February 12, 2021 Media contact: Jessy Sielski, 517-331-1151 Program contact: Heather Throne, 517-712-0841
MDARD Awards Rural Grants to Support Infrastructure, Sustainability of Land-Based Industries
LANSING—The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) has awarded 20 Rural Development Fund Grants designed to promote the sustainability of land-based industries and support infrastructure that benefits rural communities.
“Rural Michigan isn’t some strange, faraway, uninhabited land,” said MDARD Director Gary McDowell. “Most of the people in this great state are either from or currently live in rural areas, so these grants have a real impact on the lives of people we know and in communities not far from our own. Rural Michigan has unlimited potential, but it needs opportunity. The Rural Development Fund grants help provide those opportunities.”
The department received 139 proposals with requests totaling more than $11 million. Of those, MDARD awarded the following 20 projects totaling $1,700,000, leveraging a match of more than $6.7 million:
Apsey Farm LLC - $90,000 (Reed City) – Expansion of livestock processing and distribution.
Beaver Island Historical Society – $31,800 (Beaver Island) – Implement a tourism campaign, upgrades at Heritage Park and Blue Buffalo Camp Trail, development of a mobile app for tourists.
City of Ishpeming – $100,000 – Development along Malton Road to create an additional campground and to increase tourism to the region.
City of Negaunee – $82,600 – Multiple upgrades to the Teal Lake Shoreline Beach Area.
City of Stephenson – $41,500 – Wastewater treatment facility upgrades.
