don't smile - m. sturniolo
blurb, based on the #dontsmilechallenge… in which reader writes a dirty little note for matt on a piece of paper and he reads it. bot ver.
Tumblr media
matt was focused, scanning the different brands of orange juice like this was the most important decision of his life. you, on the other hand, had other plans.
you pulled a folded-up piece of paper from your pocket and discreetly shoved it into his hand. matt furrowed his brows, glancing at you before unfolding it.
his eyes flicked down to the paper, reading the words carefully: don't smile and you'll get head tonight :)
he blinked.
slowly, his head lifted, blue eyes locking onto yours through the camera as you recorded his reaction. his poker face was impressive-if you didn't know him, you'd think he wasn't fazed at all. but you did know him. you could see the slight twitch in his jaw, the way his lips pressed together like he was trying not to react.
he looked at you, then back at the camera, then back at you again, as if he couldn't believe you were actually doing this in the middle of the damn store.
your giggle slipped past your lips, unable to contain it. matt exhaled sharply through his nose, finally letting the corner of his lips twitch up into a slow smirk as he shook his head.
and then he saw you reach for a can of whipped cream.
his smirk grew, eyes flicking from the can to you as you placed it into the cart. he let out a small, amused scoff, shaking his head like he knew exactly what you were up to.
you snickered, watching his reaction through your phone screen.
and then, out of nowhere-
"fuck!"
your eyes widened as you immediately smacked his arm. "matt!" you whispered harshly, frantically looking around to make sure no one just witnessed this fully grown man yelling fuck in the middle of the dairy aisle.
he sighed dramatically, rubbing his face. "i was so close, bro."
you stopped the recording with another small giggle, biting your lip as you grabbed onto the cart, ready to wrap up this grocery trip.
fast forward to checkout, you both were loading the items onto the conveyor belt when matt's eyes landed on the can of whipped cream again. his movements slowed as he picked it up, turning to glance at you with raised brows.
"are we still on for tonight or something?" he asked, his voice light, but there was definitely a hint of hopefulness behind it.
you glanced up at him, arching a brow. "yeah."
matt licked his lips, nodding once like he was processing the confirmation. and then-without hesitation-he started speed running through the rest of the groceries, placing everything on the belt at record speed.
you laughed, shaking your head as you watched him.
"this is the fastest cashier i—"
"i know," matt cut in, finishing the line before you even could, referring to the viral tiktok you both loved.
you grinned, nudging his side playfully as he finished unloading the cart, a satisfied smirk tugging at his lips.
chris ver.

Fic preview!
NSFW CONTENT AHEAD - ONLY INTERACT IF 18+
Featuring fem!Dazai and fem!Chuuya. I have no clue how long this is going to be but I’m guessing close to the length of the omegaverse fic I wrote where they got stuck in a safe house together. That one was 6k I believe? Anyway here’s a little preview. Lmk if I should do these things more often!
Link to the full fic
Dazai had never gotten quite so many stares when she bought sex toys in a male body. But now, as she unloaded her cart at the register, the cashier’s eyes flicked up and down her body as though sizing her up.
A vibrator was followed by a pink dildo on the conveyor belt. “Got a fun weekend planned?” he asked, beginning to scan the price tags.
Dazai didn’t miss the way he attempted to discreetly check the size tag on a lacy bra as he scanned it. 32B, though she wished it was a C. It was really no fair Chuuya got double D’s— they looked ridiculous on her petite frame. But the ability user the ADA hired claimed they had no control over how the new feminine characteristics manifested, just that they would last 72 hours.
“I’m shooting a porno tomorrow,” Dazai lied. She squeezed her tits through the white blouse she wore— braless, since she’d never had a use for such an undergarment until today. “Think it’ll fit me?” she asked, nodding her head towards the bra in the cashier’s hands.
He gulped and started scanning the items faster.
“Can you not harass random men for five seconds or are you too much of a goddamn whore for that?” Chuuya growled. She stood behind Dazai in line, seriously wishing she’d pushed her way in front of her. Her cart only had a few basic clothing items and grooming supplies, while Dazai was apparently buying the whole damn store. She drew her coat tighter around her and huffed. It was technically Dazai’s— she’d lent it to her after she’d punched a guy square in the nose for whistling at her on the way to the store. The ill-fitting coat at least prevented as many rude stares and comments, though the man’s blood on her shirt might have helped in that regard.
The cashier scanned the last of Dazai’s things. “That’ll be $526.25,” he said.
“Ugh, why is being a woman so expensive?” Dazai whined.
“It’s not, you just don’t know how to budget,” Chuuya snorted. She moved up to the register and started unloading her items.
“Oh yeah? I bet your total is still over a hundred, miss budget.” Dazai smirked and leaned on the counter.
Chuuya rolled her eyes and watched the cashier ring her up. “That much for tampons?!” she exclaimed as the numbers flashed by. “Yknow what’s free? Bleeding out everywhere.”
The cashier warily eyed the blood on her shirt.
“Oh, shove it. It’s not mine,” she snapped. That shut him up for the rest of the transaction.
“$103.98,” he said a minute later.
“Yesss!” Dazai pumped her fist.
“What’re you celebrating?” Chuuya grumbled. “You’re still over $500 down the drain.”
Dazai grinned and held the credit card between her fingers. “Company card,” she said.
“Of course,” Chuuya scoffed.
They headed out of the store, arms loaded down with bags.
“Chuuya, you’re grumpier than usual as a woman. Are you PMSing?”
Chuuya narrowed her eyes. “Cute. Misogyny. Ask me again and you’ll wish I was.”
Dazai laughed, a light, airy thing. Her long brown hair shone in the sunlight, held back by heart shaped sunglasses perched atop her head. She lowered them onto her nose and smiled. “You think I’m cute?”
Chuuya chose not to answer that one, and elbowed her instead. She wasn’t in the mood to face that question today.

While driving to the store with my mom today, I again mentioned that I wanted to be evaluated for autism. Her response?
If you were autistic you wouldn’t be able to drive.
I tell her that is simply not true. That it’s a spectrum with a wide range of severity and impact on one’s life. And I start to name off a few different behaviors from my childhood and even now that point to autism. And I tell her about the things I’ve researched online and things I’ve heard from other people on the spectrum and the multiple assessments I’ve taken where I scored much higher into the “high likelihood of autism, professional evaluation recommended” range than I even anticipated.
Well you know you can’t trust everything you read online so you’re probably not autistic.
I tell her yes I understand that which is why I made sure to take assessments that were recommended by other folks who were diagnosed as adults, and read information from legitimate medical sources. And a lot of it fits me. And so I continue to describe things about my behaviors, especially from childhood.
Well I was like that too, so maybe I might be a little autistic? I do remember being evaluated as a kid, but nobody said anything about autism, they just said I was retarded. (And as I’m typing this I’m remembering that she was held back in second grade because she wasn’t keeping up with her classmates.)
And so I mention that it can run in families and remind her that her twin sister’s son is confirmed autistic. But that it’s commonly missed in girls because the symptoms tend to show differently in girls and I tell her about masking, which is something I’m almost positive I did/do. Then I admit to her that I do think she’s autistic too, and that my brother and I have actually talked about it before.
So maybe you should get evaluated… if anything, you probably have ADHD because I know I have that.
Which I didn’t know about her!! And makes a lot of sense!! And yes I think I might have ADHD too!!!
So the conversation tapers off and she accompanies me as I do some grocery shopping. We get to the cashier and she starts helping load the conveyor belt when I tell her it’s ok I’ll do it, I’m really picky about how I unload the cart. Cold things first, like items stay together, stack boxed items, maximize space by fitting the smaller items together like a puzzle, etc..
Oh I’m like that too! I need things to be organized a certain way or else it drives me insane.
Mom. That’s the autism 🙃

A band of robbers targets a train in the remote desert of Arizona, sneaking on board, slashing an air hose and forcing the locomotive to come to a dead halt. Then they take the goods and flee.
No, it's not the 1800s. It's 2025.
In less than a year, at least 10 such train heists in California and Arizona have netted about $2 million worth of Nike shoes, USA TODAY has confirmed after the Los Angeles Times first reported the string of robberies. More than 60 people are being charged in federal court in connection with the 10 heists, as well as other thefts in 2023 and 2024.
The robberies work like a “human conveyor belt,” with the goods passed from the train to the ground, to a truck, according to Keith Lewis, vice president of operations at CargoNet, a private company that provides supply-chain theft intelligence to law enforcement.
“It’s done fast. It’s fast as lightning,” Lewis told the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network, adding that the thieves like conducting the heists in isolated areas so they have time to flee. “A lot of those areas you can't get to other than with a helicopter ... You can't even get to some of those rail tracks with off-road vehicles.”
The majority of the thefts have targeted trains operated by BNSF. The company says it's working with local authorities to address the problem.
"We work hard to protect our customers' freight from pickup to delivery and have security measures in place to help ensure these goods arrive safely," BNSF said in a statement to USA TODAY on Tuesday. "We are working with federal, state, local, and tribal police departments to coordinate our approach to disrupting criminal activity and arresting offenders."
Train, ground, truck: a quick process
In multiple affidavits submitted in federal court filings and obtained by USA TODAY, Homeland Security Investigations special agent Brynna Cooke describes how the heists are done.
Robbers scout containers to identify those that could have valuable cargo like Nike shoes and electronics, Cooke says.
They usually board trains in staging areas before they begin rolling. Then while the train is moving, they move from container to container, opening them with saws and bolt-cutters.
When they find something worth stealing, they’ll often force the train to stop by cutting the braking system air hose, causing it to “go into an emergency stop.” According to Cooke, once the train comes to a halt, box trucks are sent in to unload the merchandise and flee.
Lewis has seen the process firsthand.
“I've watched them through binoculars,” he told the Republic. “I just couldn't get there in time.”
Jan 13: More than $400,000 in shoes are stolen in Arizona
One of the most recent train thefts happened on Jan. 13 in northern Arizona, when police arrested 11 people in connection with the robbery of Nike shoes from a BNSF train in a remote area outside of Williams, some 170 miles north of Phoenix, according to court records obtained by USA TODAY.
Robbers who were on board the train cut its air hose around 11 a.m., causing the train to automatically go into an emergency stop.
Shortly after the thieves cut the Arizona train's air hose on Jan. 13, a BNSF police officer who was in the area spotted several cases of Nike shoes beside the train and later saw several people loading Nike cases into a U-Haul truck and a Ford Econoline truck nearby.
There were trackers inside some of the boxes that authorities then used to conduct a traffic stop on the van, court records say. When authorities later searched both trucks, they found 1,985 pairs of unreleased Nike shoes worth over $440,000, according to court records.
The shoes targeted were a new Air Jordan 4 style, a striking red-orange collaboration with BMX athlete Nigel Sylvester, dubbed “Bike Air.” When they go on sale in the spring, they will retail for $225.
But not all train heists end in arrests. When thieves cut air hoses in remote areas, conductors and engineers are stranded along with the disabled train. Ill-equipped to stop a robbery, they can’t do much beyond call 911.
“I've had conductors telling me that they actually watched them unload it," Lewis told the Republic. "But by policy they can't confront them because they're not armed, and the bad guys could be armed."
Jan: 10, $18,000 in shoes are stolen
In Southern California, two suspects are accused of stealing about $18,000 worth of merchandise in a remote area known as the Wonder Valley. According to a news release from the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department, BNSF Police contacted authorities for help.
Police said they were notified that several suspects were robbing a train. On the way to the scene, police said they saw a box truck driving in the area.
“Deputies conducted a traffic enforcement stop on the vehicle and, through investigation, located approximately $18,000 in stolen items inside the truck,” police said.
Two men, 28-year-old Oscar Sosa of Apple Valley, California, and 45-year-old Jose Villalobos-Infante of Phoenix, were arrested in connection to the robbery. They've since been charged with second-degree burglary, grand theft and conspiracy, according to the Hi-Desert Star.
USA TODAY was not able to immediately find attorneys representing the men.
Jan: 15, $400,000 in shoes are stolen again
Only two days after the Arizona heist and five days after the robbery in San Bernardino County, robbers allegedly targeted a train in the same area of California.
According to a news release from police, BNSF Railroad police notified the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department of a train robbery. Deputies again spotted a white van leaving the area.
"However, the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued," a sheriff's department statement said. "The vehicle became disabled on a dirt berm, two occupants fled, and a foot pursuit ensued."
Two teenagers, whose names have not been released, were arrested in connection with the robbery. Police said they were able to recover 218 cases of Nike shoes valued at about $408,000.
Police have identified possible “ringleader”
According to federal court records, a man identified as Felipe Avalos-Mejia is alleged to be the ringleader of some of the train heists, operating out of Phoenix and Los Angeles.
Investigators say that Avalos Mejia had a network of scouts who helped him select trains to target. Investigators also said Avalos-Mejia provided cars and paid burglary crews to rob the trains.
Police raided 11 homes and 16 storage units connected to Avalos-Mejia in June, arresting 43 suspects and recovering $3 million in merchandise believed to have been stolen from BNSF trains.
Avalos-Mejia was arrested one day later on June 21. Court documents say police found $120,000 in cash, as well as a "detailed ledger that listed Nike and other merchandise that is typically burglarized from BNSF trains, as well as dollar amounts detailing what the merchandise is worth and for what it is sold."
Avaloz-Mejia's attorney declined USA TODAY's request for comment on Tuesday.

Northtown Maintenance-of-Way, part 3
For the final part of this mini-series, I'll be focusing on a few miscellaneous, specialized machines used in the track maintenance process. Each one's role can be done by other, less specialized machines, but it would be a good deal harder.
Tumblr media
This is a Mineral Products Inc. Multi-Purpose Machine. It's a mechanical jack of all trades, used for everything from trenching to blowing snow off of tracks. Its most common use is as a 'yard cleaner': the big broom mounted to the front picks up material between the rails and loads it onto a conveyor belt, which can dump it off to the side or into a towed railcar. Another popular job is snow removal: the broom is exchanged for an auger system, and the rear-most conveyor can be replaced with an impeller fan and chute. MPI's website says the machine can move 2000 pounds of snow per hour, and the blower can fling it up to 150 feet away from the tracks. Because it's not limited to just the rails, it can also be used on yard roads & parking lots. Other attachments include a trencher, air blower, rotary broom, and a hydraulic arm which can be fitted with its own range of attachments. I'm starting to sound like a shill here... but it is a pretty cool piece of kit.
Tumblr media
The next piece of machinery is Herzog's ACT, or Automated Conveyor Train. It's a special set of cars which uses a conveyor system and swinging boom to "precisely" drop ballast where it's needed. The yellow thing seen above is the train's main power unit. I don't know if it uses hydraulic or electric motors, but this car powers them. Each train set has up to 30 cars, which are just high-side gondolas with conveyors in the bottom. Each car has its own conveyor, which dumps into the next car's conveyor through a small hopper.
Tumblr media
A closer look at the connection between cars. I don't know if the water is from recent rains or the train's dust suppression system.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here's the 'front' of the train, which is really the end. It features the operator's cabin and the most important bit, the unloading arm. It can move ballast 50 feet from the center of the tracks, according to Herzog's website. Conveyor trains like this one are mostly used for filling in washed-out track beds, but can also strategically place piles of ballast for future projects. As of writing this post, the control car is still less than a year old. It really is the cutting edge of ballast-dropping technology!
Tumblr media
The last machine is another Herzog product: the creatively-named Rail Unloading Machine. It looks complicated, but is actually quite simple. A crane arm feeds sticks of continuously-welded rail (CWR) into a roller system, which feeds it forward (backwards, really) through two clamps and onto the ground.
Tumblr media
A view of the other side. Same deal, but all folded up. Check out the flex on that arm!

i love self checkout but i should get a discount for using it. it's so much harder to do by yourself. with normal checkout you're alternating between loading the conveyor and loading the buggy. your cashier is scanning and bagging. but they recently removed the conveyor belts from my local store's self-checkout (😨 ???) so now you're unloading scanning bagging loading like. a billion times. i always have an empty cart at the end of the checkout and my full cart at the beginning and i'm really good at bagging efficiently but still! it's harder in about four different ways! and there's never any cashiers available so there's not really a convenient alternative. i should literally get like 10% off my shit.

I would LOVE for Milo to spend 3 months at the silk-screening plant I worked in in the 90s. We made those promotional mugs and jars and shit that businesses handed out on the ceramic end, and bottles like shampoo and cleaner bottles on the plastic end (Mane N'Tail horse shampoo was one of our biggest clients on that side). We'd silkscreen the labels on, and then it'd go through these giant kilns on the glass side and smaller ones for a shorter time on the plastic side to bake that shit in. 8 hours, 130 degrees on the factory floor the whole time, the water coolers were filled with Gatorade so people wouldn't pass out.
You were either running the silk screener at a minimum trainee rate of at least 10 pieces per minute (misprints obviously didn't count, or if you got a smudge of ink anywhere else on the piece), or you were packing, meaning quick visual inspection for smudges or misprints not caught at the front end, wrapping up the checked ones and packing them in crates, putting the customer invoice in it, sealing the box with packing tape, and carrying it a few steps to a conveyor belt.
So here was my significant "maker day" - standing over a silk screener, applying one (1) roll of ink, loading a plastic bottle, ZIP screener rolls off of bottle, carefully yank bottle off screener and set on conveyor belt to go through kiln. Repeat several thousand times, possibly interspersed by popping off screen number 1, loading and inking screen number 2 to now apply the little horsey's different colored mane and tail to the bottle run I just printed his body and the instructions onto. 8 hours of that. Or 8 hours of grab, look, stuff in plastic baggie, stuff in cardboard box. Your hands got raw and beat up as fuck, your feet hurt from hours standing on concrete in steel toed boots if you were working the ceramic and glass side (those boxes were heavy enough to do damage if you dropped them), we were breathing kiln fumes all day and splashed with all kinds of inks, making Mane 'N Tail and Aveda shampoo bottles, or mugs for some business's thank you customer gifts, or branded lab beakers, or candy jars (apothecary candy jars were a popular promo item when I was there).
You could theoretically get a drink whenever you needed one but you HAD to have someone cover your line while you did so if anyone didn't show up and the float had to cover their line, you basically waited until your 15 minute break. If you needed the restroom? Not until your 15, you didn't. You spent your day in either a 5x5 square loading and running your screener, or in a 4x8 "runway" unloading your kiln and running boxes to the conveyor.
You know what you do not feel like, doing that? Creative. Godlike. The floor managers were not mean, if there was any bullying or sexual harassment I didn't hear about it, it wasn't a bad place to work in that regard. But it wasn't something you wanted to do your whole life.
And that job was a PARADISE of freedom of movement and piece rate compared to the gig I worked in a tool and die shop doing epoxy coating. If I wind up dying from cancer it's probably that gig that did it.
Yeah, Milo. Jump right on in, the epoxy's waiting. Stupid fuckstick.

The Oppvaskmaskin (Dishwasher) Sizing Guideline is here to be Discovered
The choice of buying a top quality conveyor type Oppvaskmaskin (Dishwasher) online is a great choice to get a top quality product for the commercial kitchen.
A Storhusholdning (Commercial) might be a costly piece of equipment one can ever buy for the hotel kitchen or restaurant, as it is one of the vital things also. When dishwashing equipment is so much vital for the food service operation and is highly priced then how can one make sure that one is getting the ideal sized equipment to meet the kitchen requirements? It is vital to know specific things before deciding to buy conveyor type dishwashers online or any other type of dishwashing equipment online or from the market shop.
What are the various types of dishwashing equipments?
• Flight type dishwashing equipments- These types of dishwashing equipments should be customized for every organization and may extensively vary in both design and capacity. With this commercial equipment type, one doesn’t even require the ware washing racks as all the dishes are directly placed on the conveyor belt and are drawn through the equipment. Flight type dishwashing equipments are perfect to be used in the major organizations such as hospitals, banquet halls, or the university dining halls.
• Conveyor type dishwashing equipments- These types of dishwashing equipments are found to have conveyor belts that run through the equipment to carry the wash racks below the stationery spray arms that should be sanitized rinsed and washed. Many conveyor type dishwashers come in either low temperature chemical sanitizing options or come in high temperature burning water sanitizing and may also take on more than two hundred racks in an hour.
• Single and double rack door type dishwashers: Dishwashers with doors are just like what the name entails. These equipments generally stand up on the legs. The washing compartment is found to have single or double doors on the sides for loading and unloading the dish racks. Within the equipment, the washing arms power the dishes neat. These are available in either low temperature chemical sanitizing options or high temperature options.
• Below counter dishwashers: For the smaller operations like diners, cafes, or the churches, the below counter dishwashers are the best option. These are small in size and are portable and take up only as much space as the domestic dishwashing equipments take, but can process up to 35 racks in an hour. These equipments work well in the organizations, which serves less than hundred meals in an hour like the diners and the small bars.
What is the sizing aspect?
Consider the dishes from the kitchen also, and not just from the dining space. Forgetting about the pots and pans may spell disaster for the dishwasher timetable. It is suggested to purchase a good quality Oppvaskmaskin (Dishwasher) to save more on one of the most vital kitchen solution.

Can confirm that they only earn $15.50/hr.
I briefly worked for UPS for 4 days, and quit after a lot of lying and misinformation as well as unsafe conditions. It was during the holiday season, and when I received a flyer to supply, as well as when I applied online, I was repeatedly told it would be for $21/hr and I'd be working 4 days a week.
But then at the orientation, they turned and said "oh no, it's only $21/hr until the holiday is over. Then it's $15.50 an hour!"
They also lied about the hours I'd be working, and didn't warn any of the other coworkers of mine about it either. Many of them were parents who had made specific arrangements for their kids, and couldn't work the sudden big overtime UPS was demanding (like I mean a good 4+ hours, in addition to their regular time).
Working conditions are also not great as they encourage quantity over quality. You wanna know how they unload boxes off a truck? Workers knock them over onto a conveyor belt, not caring if they get damaged, or if another employee gets hit (i got hit multiple times with boxes and earned some lovely bruises). Despite their supposedly safe rules, they sure don't enforce them, and those of us who tried to follow them often got hurt from others who didn't because UPS wanted 500 boxes an hour.
They also don't assign people to positions based on what they can do, which leads to people getting hurt. There were people getting assigned to loading trucks that honestly shouldn't have been in there. And the conveyor belts for loaders don't have a stop button, so they get stuck with a big mound of boxes piling up in a very unsafe manner on their truck as the employees struggle to stack them as best as they can.
By the way, if a box gets stuck on a conveyor belt? You gotta crawl up into it and clear it all yourself, and lemme tell you those belts aren't exactly low to the ground. There are fences on the sides but they're not very high, and it seems rather easy to fall.
UPS employees, the brave ones who stuck around, deserve much better working conditions, and higher pay. Employees practically everywhere, deserve better working conditions and better, liveable wages.
Keep striking. Keep fighting.
can we talk about the ups strike can we PLEASE talk about the ups strike
