Everything You Need to Know About Samsung Pay
Samsung Pay is a digital mobile payment application which lets users make transactions for almost all the existing credit cards and mobile payments. It also offers digital wallet service. The app was released on August 20, 2015, and is available for download in Samsung’s Galaxy series of smartphones. It can be downloaded on Galaxy S6 and newer smartphones in the Galaxy series and also some of the Galaxy watches. With the Samsung Pay, you can transfer money to any account easily with just a few taps. The mobile wallets like Samsung Pay make it very easy to make payments. You simply need to tap your phone on the swipe machine instead of physically handling your card to the merchant. It works on almost everywhere, which makes it more superior than Google Pay and Apple Pay.

Working of Samsung Pay
Samsung Pay has two different technologies that allow the app to work in almost every environment. They are as follows:
The first one is MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) which got introduced in Samsung Pay when Samsung acquired a mobile payment company LoopPay which developed this MST technology for Samsung Pay later on. This technology is generally used in older terminals where you normally do the transaction by swiping up the card. The phone emits a magnetic signal to imitate the magnetic strip which is there on the back of the card when you hold your phone against one of the cards reading terminals to make the payment.
The other one is NFC (near-field communication) which is far more advanced than the Magnetic Secure Transmission technology. It is a new payment procedure for tap-to-pay transactions at contactless terminals.
How to Setup Samsung Pay on Your Device
Generally, all the compatible devices come with a pre-installed Samsung Pay application. However, if for some reason, you are not able to locate the app on your device, you may download it from the Samsung store. Once the app is installed, open it and sign in with your Samsung account and enter the PIN, Iris Scan or Fingerprint depending upon your choice of the level of security you want. After that, add the debit, credit, membership or gift card as per the availability and proceed. You can also add your PayPal account if desired. You can add up to ten cards on your Samsung Pay account.
Once you have added a card, Samsung Pay will clarify the entered details with the concerned bank, and you will receive a confirmation accordingly once your details are confirmed. In the meanwhile, during the entered detail confirmation process, you will receive an SMS, Phone Call or an email for the confirmation of your details.
How to Make the Payment Through Samsung Pay
Once you have added the card, to make the payment with the Samsung Pay, click on the Samsung Pay icon and select the card from which you want to make the payment. Samsung Pay will ask your confirmation, and you will have to do it by placing your finger on the fingerprint scanner, use Iris Scanner, or enter your PIN to verify. Then simply tap the back of your device against the swipe machine or vending machines to make the payment. Once the payment is confirmed, you will receive the notification regarding it, in which the details of the merchant and the amount deducted from your account will be visible. You can also make the payment through the watch. It can be done by simply launching the Samsung Pay app on the watch and then tapping the watch against the payment machine just like the earlier process.
Availability of Samsung Pay in Different Countries
Currently, Samsung Pay is providing its service in twenty-seven major countries of the world. Some of those countries are the United States, UK, Australia, Canada, Russia, South Africa, UAE, Singapore, Mexico, Spain and many more. Almost every major carrier like Sprint, MetroPCS, AT&T, Verizon and many more support Samsung Pay. To make the payments through Samsung Pay, you will require an American Express, Visa, Discover or MasterCard.
Where Can Samsung Pay Be Used
Generally, it won’t work at places like ATMs or machines at gas stations where you need to insert your card physically. However, Samsung’s system setup will work with almost all major point-of-sale, as claimed by Samsung. It claims that its system works well on Magnetic Stripe, NFC, Europay, MasterCard and Visa terminals for chip-based cards. In total, Samsung Pay is widely accepted almost everywhere around the world, including the public transit systems that include TriMet in Poland and MTA’s OMNY system in New York.

Ahead of today’s anticipated launch, Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to showcase the Exynos 9820 as the mobile application processor (AP) of the device and according to a local publication in South Korea operated by mainstream media outlet Hankyoreh, it could be a big hint for Samsung’s crypto wallet integration.

In November of last year, Samsung Electronics released the Exynos 9820, its newest AP featuring an octa-core CPU. The company implemented significant improvements from its previous 9810 model including 8K UHD, a Neutral Processing Unit (NPU), and Physical Unclonable Function (PUF).
The report stated that PUF is a technology used by chipmakers to store encryptions keys safely as it strengthens the security measures in hardware containing encryption keys.
In the case of Galaxy S10, the S10 is the hardware and encryption keys would be cryptocurrency private keys if the rumored crypto wallet is integrated.
PUF Tech Suggests Crypto Wallet Integration is Highly Likely
Han Ho-hyeon, a former IT professor at the prestigious Kyung Hee Cyber University and Asia IC Card Forum chairman, has said that the integration of PUF technology into the core processing unit of the Galaxy S10 may just have significantly increased the probability of cryptocurrency wallet integration.

PUF is a technology that is typically used to store and safeguard encryption keys and mobile phones are only in need of the technology when dealing with cryptography-related systems.
Han said:
PUF technology has been added to the Exynos 9820 revealed by Samsung Electronics last year and if the Galaxy S10 features a blockchain-based crypto wallet, the probability of Samsung Electronics utilizing the PUF is very high.
Previously, smartphones and PCs used SGX and Trusted Execution Environments (TEE) to store encryption and private keys. By using PUF, it is possible to drastically improve the security of private key storage.
Last month, Korea Herald reported that Samsung Pay, the flagship payments application of Samsung used by more than 10 million active users, could be behind the integration of a crypto wallet system into the Galaxy S10.
Since its inception, Samsung Pay has adopted unorthodox methods to expand its active user base.
For instance, its acquisition of LoopPay for $200 million to implement the magnetic secure transmission (MST) technology allowed the app to gain an edge over competitors like KakaoPay and Apple Pay.
With MST, users can settle payments by hovering a device over a PoS machine. In contrast, NFC requires additional steps and verification to clear payments.
Historically, Samsung has taken on its competitors with new technologies, confident in the company’s ability to innovate and in that aspect, its approach is similar to that of Apple.

The integration of a crypto wallet could allow Samsung and its payments app to secure a new niche market that is consistently growing with the commitment of the world’s largest financial institutions like Fidelity and Nasdaq in strengthening the infrastructure supporting cryptocurrencies as an asset class.

If Samsung releases a crypto wallet on its Galaxy S10 using PUF, a strong case could be made that the Galaxy S10 is the most secure device in clearing cryptocurrency transactions due to the extra secure environment PUF provides within a mobile ecosystem.

Visa Goes All In on New Technologies, Strategic Acquisitions
In business for 60 years, Visa Inc. is global leader in digital payments with a market capitalization of $250 billion.
As the world moves toward a cashless society, the VisaNet payment network handles more than 65,000 transaction messages a second.
During the past year, Visa’s payment volume increased by 11%, revenue went up by 15%, and there are now almost 3.3 billion Visa-branded credit and debit cards in existence, 4% more than a year ago.
The not-so-secret elixir of Visa’s success is evolution, and the payment-processing giant’s continual development of new payment methods and technological advancement through partnerships.
Acquisitions and Investments
Visa consistently invests in fintech companies and partners include Behalf, Marqeta, Payworks, Klarna, LoopPay, Square and Stripe, among others.
A recent acquisition is fintech startup Paidy, currently serving more than 1.5 million users with unique payment mechanics. Users can shop online without creating an account or using a credit card; make payments by entering a mobile phone number and email addresses; receive payment authentication via a four-digit code sent through SMS or voice. Monthly, customers pay one bill, which includes all transactions, at a convenience store or through bank transfers or auto-debits.
Earlier this year Visa acquired Fraedom, a Software-as-a-Service technology company providing payments and transaction management solutions for financial institutions and their corporate customers including expense management and accounts payable solutions.
Digital Technologies
“Increasingly, businesses are replacing inefficient paper-based payment systems with digital tools,” said Vicky Bindra, global head of products and solutions, Visa. “This strategic acquisition allows Visa to offer a more comprehensive business solution to our corporate clients that is innovative, global, highly configurable and intuitive for their employees.”
Visa is trialing in the US and Europe a new dual-interface (chip- and contactless-enabled) biometric payment card with Mountain America Credit Union and Bank of Cyprus. This will be the first pilot in the US to test an on-card biometric sensor for contactless payments. The card uses fingerprint recognition as an alternative to PIN or signature authentication of a cardholder during a transaction.

“The world is quickly moving toward a future that will be free of passwords, as consumers realize how biometric technologies can make their lives easier,” said Jack Forestell, head of global merchant solutions, Visa Inc.
Juniper Research predicts biometrics will be used for more than 18 billion transactions by 2021, with the value of biometrically verified smartphone payment transactions globally expected to exceed $210 billion in 2021.
International Growth 
Visa has a huge opportunity for international growth, particularly in Asia and Latin America.
Over the next number of years, reports CEO Al Kelly, “the bulk of our growth is going to come from overseas. It’s something we’re putting a lot of time and attention to.”
Visa was the Official Payment Services Partner of FIFA, and released data on foreign travelers’ spending during opening days of 2018 FIFA World Cup. In the 11 Russian host cities, approximately one in every five (17%) purchases was with Visa contactless payment technology, including smartphones, bracelets and rings. In the stadiums themselves, the share of contactless payments was 54%, including purchases made by fans from Russia and abroad.

Looking Ahead
Analysts project Visa’s earnings to nearly double by 2021, driven by strong revenue growth.
As Motley Fool reports, “Visa has now been a public company for over 10 years. In that time, its shares have returned over an astounding 800%, almost six times what the S&P 500 index has returned in the same period.”
The article noted that “Visa remains one of the most obvious players to benefit from the world’s shift to digital and electronic payments, and judging by Visa’s third-quarter results, that trend seems to have a long runway of growth ahead still.”

Cómo la tecnología está transformando tu billetera. Los métodos de pago basados en nuevas tecnologías compiten con los tradicionales, pero estos siguen representado el 85 por ciento de las transacciones en todo el mundo
En las economías desarrolladas, el dinero lleva décadas digitalizándose. Ya muy pocos occidentales tocan su dinero. Pero el mundo sigue funcionando con dinero en efectivo, el 85 por ciento de las transacciones en todo el planeta se hacen con billetes y monedas. Aunque hay países como Singapur u Holanda que usan muy poco efectivo para hacer pagos, los consumidores de economías tan distintas como las de India, México, Italia y Taiwán siguen haciendo más del 90 por ciento de las transacciones con dinero en efectivo, según investigaciones hechas por MasterCard Advisors. Estos estudios han hallado que en Estados Unidos se usa dinero en efectivo en el 55 por ciento de los pagos. Las nuevas tecnologías, entre ellas las carteras digitales, las criptomonedas y los pagos móviles entre usuarios, quieren darle la vuelta a esas cifras. Están acelerando el paso del dinero en efectivo al digital en los países en las que existen alternativas consolidadas a los bancos y las tarjetas de crédito, pero también en los países en desarrollo.

LoopPay
Una forma de pensar en estas nuevas tecnologías es tener en cuenta su relación con los servicios de pago establecidos. Algunas tecnologías, entre ellas las carteras digitales Apple Pay y LoopPay funcionan sobre redes de pago ya existentes que son propiedad de bancos y empresas de tarjetas de crédito. Estas nuevas tecnologías están diseñadas para hacer que esos sistemas ya establecidos sean más rápidos, prácticos o seguros, y convertir las transacciones que ahora se hacen en efectivo. Otro grupo distinto de tecnologías busca sustituir los sistemas establecidos por otros nuevos, en un desafío claro a la vasta industria que ejecuta, garantiza y vigila los pagos. Entre ellas se cuenta Venmo, que es una aplicación de pago entre usuarios y una red social que procesa 3.000 millones de dólares en pagos al año (unos 2.580 millones de euros), y Dwolla, una start-upde Iowa (EEUU) que quiere quedarse con parte de los ingresos por procesado de pagos con los que se quedan Visa y otras redes.
La tecnología está cambiando cómo compramos las cosas y la consultora Boston Consulting Group predice que los ingresos de la industria de los pagos digitales podrían alcanzar los dos billones de dólares anuales en 2023 (unos 1,72 billones de euros), duplicando la cifra de 2013. Gran parte de ese aumento vendrá de que cada vez se harán menos pagos en efectivo en los países en desarrollo. “El smartphone es el catalizador de gran parte de los cambios en esta industria”, afirma la inversora de capital riesgo en Matrix Partners Dana Stalder, antigua ejecutiva de eBay y PayPal y miembro de la junta actual de Poynt, que acaba de presentar un terminal de pago inteligente. ¿Qué podría hacer descarrilar la locomotora de las tecnologías de pago?
Los problemas de seguridad. Hace poco la consultora Accenture hizo una encuesta a 4.000 consumidores en Norteamérica y halló que, aunque más gente espera acabar usando pagos móviles, al 57 por ciento de los encuestados les preocupaba la seguridad de dichas transacciones. Es una cifra que ha aumentado desde el 45 por ciento de hace dos años.
Nuevos métodos podrían venir al rescate. Apple Pay, Google Wallet y otros usan un sistema que crea una ficha digital de un solo uso para cada transacción y envían esa ficha a través del sistema en vez de la información de la tarjeta de crédito del cliente.
Innovaciones de este tipo demuestran que los pagos móviles, aunque no den lugar a un cambio radical, están mejorando un ecosistema global de pagos que hace tiempo que necesitaba actualizarse

Summary
Samsung Pay is a mobile payment solution launched by Samsung in August 2015. At present, the solution is available in 27 markets. Samsung Pay is available for a range of Samsung products, including its Galaxy devices and Gear wearable technology.
