USC Athletics partners with Stone Brewing Co. for official craft beer.
Tumblr media
Press Release
ESCONDIDO, CA ... The University of Southern California (USC) Athletics, announces the debut of its first-ever official craft beer, Stone Fight On! Pale Ale. The beer is brewed by Stone Brewing, the Southern California-based brewery that has been trailblazing the craft beer category with a fierce commitment to quality and freshness for 27 years. The official USC Athletics beer will be available for purchase the week of August 14, 2023.
Stone Fight On! Pale Ale will be distributed throughout Southern California at stores, bars, and restaurants and onsite at the Los Angeles Colosseum and the Galen Center, home of the USC Trojans. Its 16oz cans feature classic USC iconography and colors. Inside, the beer is a quintessential SoCal Pale Ale – a balanced blend of tropical and citrusy hop flavors, light-body and endlessly drinkable at 5.5% ABV. Stone’s brewers developed the beer to offer that hoppiness Southern Californians crave in a style that suits tailgates, beach days, and cheering from the stands or at home.
“USC Athletics has been seeking the perfect beer partner – a regional brand that would be meaningful to our fans and add to the gameday experience, " explained Drew DeHart, Vice President/General Manager, USC Sports Properties and Playfly Sports. “Stone really nailed a Pale Ale that’s representative of the SoCal craft beer scene, and easy drinking too. We’re honored to see our USC colors, marks and Trojan alongside the Stone Gargoyle.”
“Stone beers are popular nationwide and across the globe, but SoCal is where we started and is home to our biggest population of fans,” explained Erin Smith, Stone Brewing SVP of Marketing. “We’re thrilled at the opportunity to create a beer that instills local pride in that cross-section of craft beer drinkers and USC fans and alumni. It’s our hope that this beer is enjoyed year-round for its incredible flavor, and that it truly adds to the gameday experience across all USC sports.”

Comprehensive Guide to Commercial AC Installation: Ensuring a Comfortable and Efficient Business Env
Understanding Your Business Needs
Before embarking on an AC installation project, it’s essential to assess the specific cooling needs of your business. Factors such as the size of your premises, the number of rooms, the type of business, and the local climate all play significant roles in determining the appropriate AC system. For instance, a restaurant kitchen will have different cooling requirements compared to a retail store or an office. A thorough evaluation helps in choosing a system that can efficiently handle your business’s unique demands.
Choosing the Right System
Once you understand your needs, the next step is selecting the right type of AC system. commercial ac installation There are several options available, each with its pros and cons:
Split Systems: Ideal for small to medium-sized businesses, split systems are easy to install and maintain. They offer flexibility as they can be used to cool specific areas without affecting others.
Packaged Systems: These are suitable for larger spaces and offer the convenience of housing all components (compressor, condenser, and evaporator) in a single unit, usually installed on the roof or beside the building.
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) Systems: VRF systems are highly efficient and can cool multiple zones independently, making them perfect for large commercial buildings with varying cooling needs.
Ducted Systems: If your business requires consistent temperature control across a large area, ducted systems provide an effective solution. These systems distribute air through a network of ducts, ensuring uniform cooling.
Consulting with a professional HVAC contractor can help you make an informed decision based on your budget, space, and cooling requirements.
The Importance of Professional Installation
While it may be tempting to cut costs by attempting a DIY installation or hiring an unqualified technician, the importance of professional installation cannot be overstated. A certified HVAC technician will ensure that your AC system is installed correctly, optimizing its performance and longevity. They will also handle complex tasks such as electrical wiring, ductwork, and refrigerant handling, which are essential for the system’s safe and efficient operation.
Moreover, professional installation ensures compliance with local building codes and regulations, avoiding potential legal issues and fines. A poorly installed system can lead to frequent breakdowns, higher energy bills, and costly repairs, which can significantly impact your business’s bottom line.
Energy Efficiency and Cost Savings
One of the primary benefits of a properly installed commercial AC system is improved energy efficiency. air conditioning installation los angeles Modern AC systems are designed to consume less energy while providing superior cooling performance. By choosing an energy-efficient system, you can reduce your business’s energy bills and minimize its environmental footprint.
Additionally, many energy-efficient AC systems qualify for rebates and incentives from local utility companies, further reducing the overall cost of installation.
Post-Installation Considerations
After installation, regular maintenance is crucial to keep your AC system running smoothly. Scheduling periodic inspections and servicing can help identify potential issues before they escalate, ensuring that your system operates at peak efficiency throughout its lifespan.

Pro-Hamas Agitators Whine Like Babies When Jews They Attacked Turn the Table on Them
Tumblr media
As our RedState editor Bob Hoge reported, Palestinian Youth Movement L.A. and Code Pink L.A. organized a Pro-Hamas/"Free Palestine" protest outside the Adas Torah synagogue in Los Angeles, just because. The Jewish synagogue members and participants fought back, and the protest escalated into violence, with eggs, pepper spray, and fists being thrown. Some people and journalists were thrown to the ground and kicked, while others were bludgeoned.
Chaotic Scene Outside L.A. Synagogue As Pro-Hamas Assailants Attack Jews, Clash With LAPD
— Kosher🎗🧡 (@KosherCockney) June 24, 2024
The first headline that KTLA chose to publish about the protests was absolutely gobsmacking. "Protestors allegedly block synagogue's entrance in L.A." Seriously? The legacy media outlets barely gave this pogrom the time of day or the outrage that was given to the campus protests.
It's Time for the DOJ to Prosecute Pro-Hamas Agitators as Domestic Violent Extremists
Social media accounts by journalists who were on the ground, like Cam Higby and Daniel Greenfield, represent the necessary documentation of this atrocity, as well as the determination of the Jewish neighborhood to rightly fight back. Everyone else in the media is now just catching up. Because these Pro-Hamas cretins were clearly the aggressors and the Jewish synagogue members defended themselves, the legacy press has no narrative to milk that advantages their pro-Palestine allegiance. Jewish volunteer security Magen Am was there in force and helped to allay some of the violence.
And the LAPD? According to Journalist Greenfield, after lingering for an hour (like they did at UCLA) and then blocking access so that the synagogue members could not safely get into the building, the LAPD finally pushed back on the pro-Hamas protestors, using pepper spray to subdue some.
Their line was broken, and the pro-Hamas thugs dispersed into the neighborhood, and some fled in their cars. Those who were left behind by their comrades got the beat down they deserved and then suddenly decided that the police were necessary after receiving a taste of what they were trying to dish out.
WATCH:
A demonstration organised against an Israeli real estate fair held at the Adas Torah shul devolved into chaos on Sunday with dozens of individuals punching each other in the street. Footage of the incident shows keffiyeh-clad demonstrators shoving men wearing yarmulkes and one man with blood streaming down his face.  Flags of the messianic wing of Chabad can be seen flying in the background.
Then there was this charming pair who travel with their toddler to protest for Palestine. It's sick.
In another clip, a woman can be seen leaning out of the sunroof of a car and making making gun hand gestures and lifting her middle fingers at pro-Israel demonstrators. A group of police officers then approach her SUV with their guns raised, before she and a masked man exit the vehicle and surrender. After taking them away, officers then remove a child from the car.
WATCH:
Next to those journalists on the ground, the fullest coverage of what happened on Sunday has come from publications outside of the U.S., like The Jerusalem Post.
Activist and politician Sam Yerbi said that violent anti-Israel activists dispersed into Jewish neighborhoods "hunting Jews and causing more destruction and vandalism."  [Daniel] Greenfield had also said that anti-Israel activists had been roaming Pico-Robertson threatening people. Yerbi published a video on Instagram of a man in a Keffiyeh threatening residents with two bludgeons he retrieved from his car.  In another video he shared, community members intervened in anti-Israel vandalism of a kosher restaurant. Greenfield, Yerbi, and political consultant Noah Pollak, who had also been present, harshly criticized  the LAPD and Bass for their failure to prepare for and address the riot.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass did exactly what cowardly former Mayor Eric Garcetti did in 2020 with the BLM riots. Buckled and asked the LAPD to stand down in the face of clearly provoked violence.
It took Bass many hours after the violence to even bother to issue a statement, in the wee small hours of the morning...  on X.
Today’s violence in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood today was abhorrent, and blocking access to a place of worship is unacceptable. I’ve called on LAPD to provide additional patrols in the Pico-Robertson community as well as outside of houses of worship throughout the city. I’ll be meeting with Chief Choi tomorrow to further discuss the safety of Angelenos. I want to be clear that Los Angeles will not be a harbor for antisemitism and violence. Those responsible for either will be found and held accountable. I will be joining Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky, the Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Federation Los Angeles Rabbi Noah Farkas and other law enforcement and faith leaders in a community meeting this week as we talk about steps forward, together.
Journalist Cam Higby, who was attacked while covering the protests, blasted Governor Gavin Newsom for his faux outrage. Higby pointed out that these same people spearheading this violence had been arrested at the UCLA Pro-Hamas protests weeks back.
— Cam Higby 🇺🇸 (@camhigby) June 24, 2024
Political consultant Noah Pollak called the lack of action on the part of Bass and the LAPD an "absolute disgrace."
I was there today for an event at the shul. @LAPDHQ let the Hamas supporters take over the sidewalk in front of the shul and block its entrance. In fact, LAPD had formed a cordon around the front of the shul to keep Jews out and Hamas supporters in. I tried to enter with my kids through the front door and was turned away not by Hamas supporters but by the LAPD. Anyone who wanted to attend had to use a secret back entrance. @KarenBassLA and @LAPDHQ are an absolute disgrace -- it's clear the police have been instructed to help the Democratic Party street animals do their thuggery. They were definitely not there to protect the right of Jews to enter their shul.
Bass is reportedly meeting on Monday with Jewish and other faith leaders, as well as city officials, concerning Sunday's events. This post-crisis social is akin to rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. With the heightened awareness that no one is coming to save them, the Jewish people of Los Angeles and elsewhere will increasingly take action into their own hands to protect their lives and their synagogues. If one thinks Sunday's violence was disturbing, you have not seen the half of it.

"How Long Gone" Podcast Extends North American Tour
Tumblr media
Live podcast tours offer fans a chance to see their favorite podcasters live. For the podcasters, there are two obvious benefits, besides the money made on the tour. First, the podcasters receive that immediate feedback from the live audience that they don't receive while recording. Second, attendance at these live events demonstrates how dedicated the fans of the show are.
How Long Gonejoined theTalkhouse podcast network last year, delivering their singular brand of charm, unscriptable humor and colorful commentary on all things culture, fashion and fitness to widespread fan and critical acclaim spanning The New York Times, Esquire, Rolling Stone, W Magazine, Interview Magazine, Vulture and more. Hosts Chris Black and Jason Stewart have taken the show on the road with sold-out live shows in the US and UK. They just wrapped a May stint with an appearance at LA’s Just Like Heaven festival and are thrilled to continue with additional North American appearances throughout June. Tickets are available here.
Maintaining a tireless clip of three shows per week, and a growing audience of more than half a million monthly listeners, the podcast has welcomed an illustrious array of guests from the worlds of music (Jenny Lewis, Phoebe Bridgers, Waxahatchee, Amen Dunes, Caroline Polachek, Modest Mouse, Shamir, Sleater-Kinney), film (BJ Novak, Paul Scheer, Lee Pace), journalism and media (Bret Easton Ellis, The New Yorker's Naomi Fry, GQ's Will Welch, The Guardian’s Laura Snapes), art and design (Aries' Sofia Prantera, Chloe Wise, Roe Ethridge), culinary arts (Carla Lalli Music, Ghetto Gastro, Uncle Paulie), fellow podcasters (Chapo Trap House, Zane Lowe), and comedy (Moshe Kasher, Bowen Yang, Tom Scharpling, Cat Cohen, Esther King, Robby Hoffman).
Over the past four years, How Long Gone has expanded its brand to include collaborations with record label Jagjaguwar, MatchesFashion, Palmes and others.
Black and Stewart have built How Long Gone into something compelling and unique. First launched in the early weeks of the pandemic as a way for the pair to stay in touch and chat with their (smart, successful, often famous) friends, How Long Gone has now run for more than 450 episodes, each one acting like a comedy show, in-depth interview and niche scene report rolled into one.
How Long Gone Tour Dates - TICKETS
6/19: Chicago, IL @ Bottom Lounge
6/20: Toronto, ON @ Great Hall
6/26: Atlanta, GA @ Terminal West
6/27: Washington, DC @ The Atlantis
6/28: Philadelphia, PA @ Johnny Brenda’s
7/01: St Paul, MN @ Turf Club
Black, 40, works as a creative consultant for brands such as Thom Browne and J Crew; Stewart, 42, is a DJ who threw an influential weekly party at Los Angeles’ now-defunct Cinespace club and taught Zac Efron how to DJ for the 2015 electronic dance music movie We Are Your Friends. Neither are bothered by the idea that their discussion of insidery restaurants, bars, publications and parties – many of which are discussed totally sans-context – may seem too niche. Black describes this quality as the podcast’s “special sauce”, and both hosts agree it is an inherent part of the appeal.
“The way I grew up was like, if you’re hanging out with cool older kids, and they mention a band or a place or a movie, instead of saying, ‘Oh, I don’t know what that is,’ you just laugh and smile, and then you go home, take the time to research what they’re talking about, and discover it yourself,” says Stewart in a Guardian article. “I want to create that for this generation.”
Tumblr media
How Long Gone has inadvertently become one of the most insightful looks at sobriety in podcasting. Black is sober, after battling an addiction to prescription opiates in his 30s, while Stewart still drinks and takes drugs; the resulting conversations they have on the podcast about drugs and sobriety are vastly different from those on more specifically wellness-minded shows.
In general, How Long Gone has an air of unproduced reality that sets it apart from a lot of the more scripted-feeling chat shows that abound. Celebrity guests seem endeared to Black and Stewart’s conversational style, which means that How Long Gone’s interviews often feel more revealing.

Yahoo Finance: Laid-off food workers claim their 'right to return' to jobs was violated at Hotel Figueroa
Tumblr media
Two days after the food hospitality operator at a fashionable downtown hotel shuttered its restaurants and laid off its food and beverage employees, a new third-party management company moved in and hired a whole new set of workers, according to a complaint filed with the Los Angeles city attorney’s office.
The laid-off food and beverage laborers had attempted to unionize months earlier. They allege that Hotel Figueroa and hospitality operator the Botanical Group left them out of the hiring, potentially violating a city "right to return" law that requires that new hotel owners or new operators retain the site’s employees for a transitional period, according to the complaint.
A Feb. 21 letter addressed to the city attorney’s office asks for an investigation. A spokesperson for the office confirmed receipt of the complaint but wouldn't comment further on the matter.
“The company closed without retaining workers in violation of the recall law,” said Kurt Petersen, co-president of Unite Here Local 11, which is aiding the hotel workers in their effort. ”It is beyond outrageous to see wealthy companies … treat their long-standing workers like they are disposable.”
Read more: Restaurant workers wanted to unionize at this L.A. hotel. Now the restaurants are closing
The hotel is denying the premise of the workers' complaint.
In a prepared statement, a spokesperson for Hotel Figueroa said its ownership is “acting in accordance” with the Los Angeles Hotel Worker Retention Ordinance, which requires that new hotel owners or operators retain the site’s employees for a transitional period. The 2006 ordinance initially applied only to hotels in the LAX corridor. In 2022, a new hotel worker protection ordinance expanded the existing law to include all city hotels with more than 50 guestrooms.
The retention rule is intended to protect laid-off hotel workers so that if a hotel undergoes a change in control, the successor hotel employer is required to hire previous employees for a 90-day transition period and may not discharge these employees without cause.
Tumblr media
The Hotel Figueroa spokesperson said there isn’t a new food and beverage operator in place, but that they are instead working with a “consultant to provide limited F&B [food and beverage] service.” Several former staff members of the former third-party management group returned to the hotel’s food and beverage outlets, she said, and they expect more will return in the next few weeks.
When asked how many non-managerial staff had been hired back, the spokesperson said the company wouldn’t comment further.
The Botanical Group did not respond to emails and message for comment.
The 2006 retention ordinance was drafted in response to mass firings that occurred in 2000 at a Wyndham hotel near LAX. The hotel closed and laid off more than 200 employees. The hotel reopened as the Radisson Hotel LAX about a year later but did not hire all of the former Wyndham workers, even though more than 100 of them submitted applications.
Since then, the law has been invoked a handful of times, said Maria Hernandez, a spokeswoman with Unite Here Local 11.
On a recent Friday afternoon, a bartender at the reopened Bar Magnolia said he and the other bartenders present were new to the job, as well as other non-management employees. The space once occupied by Sparrow Italia, which served coastal Italian dishes and cocktails in an indoor-meets-outdoor setting, remained closed.
A dishwasher, line cook and prep cook interviewed previously about Hotel Figueroa also said they had been laid off and not rehired by the new operator.
Tumblr media
Workers sought to organize
Tension between the former hospitality group Noble 33 and its employees at Hotel Figueroa started soon after the third-party management took over food and beverage operations for the hotel in 2021, according to workers and union organizers who spoke with The Times.
Workers said they were forced to take on multiple tasks without more pay as their colleagues left and management failed to back-fill positions.
On Dec. 8, back-of-house food and beverage workers who worked for Noble 33 notified their management that they intended to form a union, and submitted cards to do so.
Six days later, hospitality operator Noble 33 announced it would close Sparrow Italia, Café Fig, Bar Magnolia, the Cafeteria and La Casita at Driftwood at the famed hotel, a historic building in downtown L.A. that for the last two decades built a following for its Mediterranean-inspired space and stylish dining rooms.

Tumblr media
Noble 33 followed through on the closure. On Feb. 11, the company laid off an estimated 100 non-management employees and closed the Hotel Figueroa’s restaurants.
Maria Ibarra, a cook for Noble 33 at the hotel, said she was laid off and not rehired. She now faces unemployment.
“The owners thought they could just replace us overnight and that we would give up and walk away,” Ibarra said. “My co-workers and I will not do that. We have rights.”
Wednesday, Unite Here Local 11, workers and religious leaders called for a boycott of the hotel and hospitality group, at a morning press conference in front of Hotel Figueroa.
The group also delivered a letter signed by nearly 500 people demanding that the hotel bring back the laid-off workers.
"We call on you to immediately offer to return the workers to their employment at the hotel and compensate them for time missed," the letter said.
The boycott is just the latest move taken by workers and the union.
On Friday, nearly 40 people picketed at Hotel Figueroa — seven of them hotel housekeepers alongside about 30 community members and religious leaders with Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice, a faith-based advocacy group based near downtown. They shouted "Bring them back" and held a sign that read "Bring back the Fig 100."

Lawsuit Filed Against City Of Fresno Over Naming Of Cesar Chavez Boulevard
Street renaming is a frequent practice for a variety of purposes, including honoring historical personalities, celebrating local heroes, or expressing shifts in community ideals. When renaming a street, it's important to think about the possible effects it can have on the neighborhood, especially on the people who live there. Changing street names could be inconvenient and need amending addresses on mail, other records, and legal papers. It can be a step in the right direction toward promoting unity and acknowledging varied voices if the process comprises an open, inclusive, and transparent community involvement approach that takes into account the thoughts and viewpoints of all stakeholders. But if it's carried out without proper consultation from the individuals involved, it can be divisive.

How the Hollywood Shutdown Will Affect Los Angeles
Tumblr media
Los Angeles County has 88 cities. Ten million people. Two hundred-plus languages spoken. And a nine-letter sign that, for much of the world, defines the entire region: HOLLYWOOD.Los Angeles has long been regarded as the global “company town” for show business, and as a rare actors’ strike upended the signature industry this week, the potential for cascading economic impacts across Southern California has emerged as a critical local issue. But economists disagree on just how extensively the simultaneous actors’ and writers’ strikes will be felt.Even by the most generous estimates, Hollywood has never supported more than about 5 percent of employment in a region where many more people work in trade, health care, government and even Southern California’s diminished manufacturing sector. Yet Hollywood pervades Los Angeles life in ways as big as a movie backdrop or as small as a street detour on some awards night. For many, the ceased productions and darkened premieres are not just a threat to the flow of dollars to restaurants and retailers that cater to film crews, but also a blow to the region’s cultural heart.“To the extent that Hollywood defines America’s idea of where I live, Hollywood’s troubles become my troubles,” said D.J. Waldie, a cultural historian in Southern California. “When Hollywood stops, a great many things stop here, and not just a few studios.”During the 2007 screenwriters’ strike, the California economy lost $2.1 billion, according to one study. The last time unionized screenwriters and actors staged dual walkouts, in 1960, the strikes did not settle for nearly six months.Economists on Friday said the length of the two strikes will largely determine its financial impact on Los Angeles, though some were more optimistic than others.Lee Ohanian, an economics professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has written extensively about California, estimated that about 20 percent of the local economy could be hit, in part because the industry generates so much revenue and has so many highly compensated local employees.Chris Thornberg, a founding partner at the Los Angeles consulting firm Beacon Economics, said the strikes might not be felt locally for a long time because so much of show business has been focused on exploiting and distributing existing content.“As long as people are paying for Hulu and buying Disney movies online, we’re making money,” Dr. Thornberg said. “Eventually, there will come a time when the lack of content will start to pinch, but this is a slow boil, not a rapid one.”The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, made it clear that she considered the labor standoff to be an urgent local issue and called on the studios and unions to “work around the clock” to reach an equitable agreement.“This affects all of us and is essential to our overall economy,” Mayor Bass said.Less tangible is the potential impact on Southern California’s self image. Show business is wrapped up in the region’s civic identity in ways that are unparalleled in less-renowned cities. An audience of 18.7 million people this year tuned in to the Academy Awards, Los Angeles’ best known office party. Backdrops from Venice Beach to the Sixth Street Viaduct are regarded locally with pride as stars in their own right. Homeowners from the San Fernando Valley to South Pasadena run lucrative side hustles, renting their houses for film shoots and ads.Though most of the famous names live in mansions behind gates, few Angelenos, even in far-flung exurbs, are without a celebrity story — the producer spotted in Joshua Tree, the famous face in the next lane in traffic.“Everywhere I go, people ask me the same question: What stars have I met?” said Stephen Cheung, the president and chief executive of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation. “Nobody would ask me that if I were from another city.”Born in Hong Kong, Mr. Cheung, 44, said that he saw his first real celebrity in Los Angeles when he was about 10, through a car window. “We were near the convention center in downtown, and all of a sudden, a car pulled up and I saw Madonna get out.”Many also know stars the way anyone knows anyone in the nation’s second-largest city: as neighbors or fellow parents or people walking their dogs. Entertainers sponsor local schools, embark on second careers as politicians, stump for state ballot initiatives and occasionally get into scrapes with the mayor for trying to fill their own potholes.Democratic leaders throughout the liberal state have long been supportive; earlier this month, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California extended a $330 million-a-year film and television tax credit program to encourage studios to keep productions at home. Certain communities share a special bond.“We have a lot of studio people who live in Burbank,” Mimi House, a retired medical clinic administrative worker, said on Thursday while lunching with a group of fellow retirees in the Los Angeles suburb’s “beautiful downtown” shortly after leaders of the actors’ union, known as SAG-AFTRA, announced the walkout. Without the entertainment industry, Burbank would be a “ghost town,” added Virginia Bohr, a retired accountant at the table with Ms. House. Local officials recently renamed their airport Hollywood Burbank, though Hollywood is technically a neighborhood in Los Angeles, a separate city. The region has long attracted show business aspirants from around the world who hope to catch their big break. Many scrape by for years before they find work outside the entertainment industry.Thomas Whaley, a veteran teacher who for 23 years has coordinated an extensive visual and performing arts curriculum at the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, credited the entertainment community for drawing him to the region and helping to ensure the longstanding success of his program, which has become a statewide model for the breadth and quality of its offerings. Were it not for the local concentration of talent, he said, he might never have ended up in the job he has come to cherish.“I moved to L.A. to play trombone for film and TV in 1990,” said Mr. Whaley, who grew up in Rhode Island and studied to become a studio musician on full scholarships at Berklee College of Music in Boston and the University of Miami. “My mother kept saying, Come home, Rhode Island’s great, and I was like, Mom, they don’t have what I need.”Other Angelenos feel a disconnect with an industry whose workers have long been concentrated in parts of the city that are more affluent and white. In Mid-City, a Los Angeles neighborhood several miles south of Hollywood that is predominantly Latino and Black, Rachel Johnson and Rosario Gomez, both 17, were more interested in frozen fruit treats from the local paleta shop than in the demands of Hollywood strikers.“It’s the least of our concerns,” Ms. Johnson said of the picket lines, noting the struggling mom-and-pop businesses on their streets, rising rents and persistent homeless encampments.“Yeah, there are bigger problems here, like gentrification,” Ms. Gomez added.Nearby at La Cevicheria, a tiny eatery on Pico Boulevard, Yejoo Kim, 29, who works in geopolitics, agreed that Hollywood “can feel worlds apart,” even for Angelenos who were born and raised in the city, as she was.But she and her roommate, David Choi, 27, also pointed to the large immigrant communities in Los Angeles that have been reflected with care in recent years in film and television.“I feel a sense of solidarity,” said Mr. Choi, a novelist interested in the pay standards that Hollywood sets for its writers. “I’d be happy to participate in a boycott of a show.”Corina Knoll contributed reporting from Los Angeles and Vik Jolly from Burbank, Calif.
