EP 1x25 (25 of 1 of 176) Conspiracy RATING: 5/5 Oh man oh man do I love this episode! As mentioned previously I am not as au fait with Season One of TNG as I am with the later seasons, so it was only when I got hold of the TNG ‘Make Up FX Journal,’ - full of alien and creature designs from the show - that I saw images from the terrifying ending of Conspiracy. Let’s not kid ourselves: the bit everyone remembers from this episode, nay this season (2nd only to Q in his judge’s robes) is when Picard and Riker shoot a man until his head explodes! And that’s just the crescendo; for the scene leading up to this uncharacteristically violent death features people eating living grubs with their fingers and a space crustacean crawling down the throat of Lt. Cdr. Dexter Remmick, (last seen in the episode Coming of Age, in a nice bit of continuity). . Once Dexter has been exploded, a chestburster-type alien emerges from his burned out husk - rib cage exposed and everything - and screeches horribly, lamenting its dead children. The look shared between Picard and #Riker speaks volumes: ‘it is our mission to seek out new life and new civilisations but F-*-C-K-T-H-I-S!’ . Originally the story just featured a military coup within Starfleeet but Gene #Roddenberry reportedly HATED the idea that the organisation was in any way corruptible - which is rich considering how many times Captain Kirk butted heads with stupid Admirals - but I do love the creepy idea that former friends lose their memory and start acting weird, and that an attack on the Federation can come from within (something that was explored with the introduction of the Changelings in Deep Space Nine). . So, we have an insidious enemy, some gonzo imagery, and scene in which an elderly man throws Geordi is through a metal door but suffers no* ill effects. Top marks! *TBH, I don’t think #Geordi had fully recovered from the episode’s opening scene in which Data fails to get one of his jokes.
