Latest reading material: Poison, by Kathryn Harrison.

An engrossing, beautifully-told story that interweaves the lives of two women born on the same day but in very different circumstances: Francisca de Luarca, daughter of a silk grower, and María Luisa (Marie Louise de Bourbon), the French-born queen of Spanish King Carlos II. Highly recommended. Incidentally, my copy is one of countless ex-library books I own (”permanently withdrawn” as the now faded ink stamp has it).

I intend to stick with Kathryn Harrison for my next book to read. I’m curious about her memoir entitled The Kiss, which apparently caused controversy when it was published back in 1997.

I saw a video of Alex and Marc and they were saying Marc was more festive and I was wondering if there’s a lot of festivals or holidays in Spain that get celebrated and if so do you have favourites.

Oh, Anon, we have so many festivals!!! My personal favourites are the April Fair in Sevilla (pretty pretty dresses… lots of dancing… copious amounts of alcohol… I go every year and I dress up for it) and San Timoteo in Luarca, Asturias (just a week of madness and drinking as much cider as you can with your grandma out in a field). Other notable mentions are the Fallas in Valencia (fire, baby, fire!) and Sant Jordi in Catalonia (where the tradition is to gift your loved ones flowers and a book).

The only festivals I don’t like are those that involve live animals, like for example the running of the bulls in Pamplona, called San Fermines.
