Roatan Island: Finding Treasure in the Undiscovered Caribbean
When it comes to a Caribbean vacation, different people envision different things. Some people imagine lazing in the sun all day, others think of pristine waters and all the activities associated with it, while still others imagine a romantic getaway set in a wonderland inhabited by pirates and their treasure. All of these fantasies can be realized on a Caribbean vacation but nowhere do all these imaginings come together quite so well as on the relatively unknown island of Roatan.
Unparalleled Beauty
The island lies just off the northern coast of Honduras and is fronted by the second largest barrier reef in the world. These waters contain an amazing diversity of marine flora and fauna. The area is renowned among scuba divers and sport fishermen alike. In addition, the island itself is also home to an impressive array of plant- and animal-life.
True Romance
The pirates of old, including such famous ones as the debonair Captain Morgan, recognized and enjoyed the comforts of this magnificent island. Towns such as Jonesville, Port Royal and Oakridge have maintained elements of this historical flavor. Just by walking around, a present day visitor can experience the romance and authentic culture of an earlier, simpler age.
Amazing Activities
Naturally, the island provides a full range of beach-related activities from simply sunning oneself through physical activities like swimming and diving to even more exciting pursuits such as jet-skiing and ziplining. In addition, there is a championship golf course located on the island. If you are feeling more adventurous, the island and its many natural delights can be explored on foot, on horseback or by car. Of course, there are also more relaxed options such as fine dining, shopping and exciting nightlife.
Eminent Affordability
Luxury vacations on Roatan offer some of the best values in the Caribbean with prices one-third to one-half those on the more expensive islands without the attendant overdevelopment and crowding. The island is conveniently accessed through the Juan Manuel Gálvez Roatán International Airport with direct US flights from either Atlanta, Houston or Miami. There are a wide variety of accommodations on the island from the classic condo-tels in West Bay to the more relaxed and accessible  oceanfront vacation rentals in West End.
The Roatan Vacation Experience
While it has all the modern luxuries and activities that experienced travelers expect, a Roatan vacation is unlike any other in the Caribbean. With a pristine environment full of natural beauty, uncrowded spaces with magnificent views and an Old World charm packed into one marvelous island, discovering Roatan is, indeed, like finding buried treasure.
Coral Vista Villas are the most popular Roatan vacation rentals. Overlooking Half Moon Bay in Roatan's vibrant West End village, these four-bedroom luxury villas provide the perfect destination for family or friends to escape life's daily grind, relax together in luxury accommodations, and explore one of the Caribbean's last unspoiled islands on an authentic Roatan vacation.

Monday, Weekend was very quiet and laid back. Saturday night we tried out ChiChi’s restaurant. Excellent meal. Snapper, lobster, seafood medley. I have to say, stay with the fish and seafood. The Belizians are pretty darn good at fish. The pork and beef is not so good. Bestie and I kayaked probably for the last time on Sunday. Hopefully we’ll be able to kayak again when we get to Roatan. Mostly we explored the town, saw a manta ray, more iguanas and tested out some restaurants. We went down the road towards Maya Beach and stopped at the Turtle Inn by Coppola That is Frances Ford Coppola. This is a pretty fancy place. Built to resemble indigenous thatched villages, it certainly is not that. It is a resort for the luxurious minded. We wandered through and had a light lunch at the beach restaurant. I had a watermelon salad…very delish, and Bestie had a banana flower salad, not so delish. We also tried the shrimp ceviche. Very tasty.
Monday was spent packing up and catching the shuttle to San Ignacio, a small city, but third largest in Belize. We are taking shuttles to be as careful as we can about Covid. We know that we have to cross over into Guatemala in 2 weeks and we have to test negative. Buses are crowded and we wish to avoid that. We drove through some very pretty landscapes, some nice farming communities. Our driver did not know the crops which is pretty standard but we wished that he did. We are such farmers! We did stop at a tourist attraction The Blue Hole. This area is a karst landscape with limestone holes and caves undermining the land. Steep little hills, covered with trees and underbrush also mark this landscape. The Blue Hole was not too impressive. We paid a bit to get into the National Park then walked a well-marked trail to the site. I think if we’d been wanting to swim it would have been great. Lots of little fishes in the water. Water was quite blue, surrounded by limestone hills, covered with undergrowth. This is the rainforest. There were caves as well, but we did not go in.
As we travelled we saw some pretty poor places with porches filled with hopeless looking folk watching the traffic roll by. But there also were some well tended houses and yards. San Ignacio seems to be typical of many tropical cities. There is a wide demarcation between poor and rich. But it does seem to be bustling. Lots of traffic, lots of business being conducted. But guards, armed at the doors of the supermarkets. Lots of businesses have armed security. Went into a supermarket to pick up groceries for the house and I spoke to a customer, asking her if the queso was good. She said it was delicious. Lo and behold, when we got to the house, she was our landlord. The house wasn’t quite ready so we went for lunch. Nice little place, good food. And we are finding that the prices are quite a bit less than we were paying at Placencia. Of course, Placencia is a tourist area and we were paying tourist area prices, which were just a bit less than we would pay in Canada. Here, nachos, two full meals, 2 beer, bottle of water cost $33 CAD. That was very good. We walked back to the house - up the mountain. I don’t mind as we need the exercise. A nice man stopped to see if we needed a ride.
Our house…well, it’s nice. Big. Bedrooms are big, living room is big. Kitchen is well stocked. Tile floors. Stairs are mahogany. All good. Big pool in the backyard. But the security shocks me…every door has double deadbolts with a metal plate protecting them from the outside, and each has a secondary door made from heavy expanded metal, also with deadbolts. All windows have same security. There’s a metal fence around the porch with a deadbolted gate. Fort Knox. Bestie says she feels safe now that we’re all locked in…but what if we have to get out. All you can do is laugh, nervously. It is sure an indication of how the people here live. OUr landlords live next door to this house, also in a very nice house. They have a big dog. He’s a barker! Pictures: Beach at Placencia…look how empty it is. Covid has killed their industry. OUr rental-across the canal. The canal is where we kayaked. Then the Turtle Inn restaurant. And a turtle and a manta ray.
