Anything But Mine (d.s.) - Chapter Six
A/N in celebration of my one year as a Limelight, here’s another chapter :) (and yes I edited this picture to make him brunette again lol)

The next week was keeping Florence busy. Grayson was preoccupied with work, and Daniel and their friends were trying to keep up with their increasing course load. Clementine had a doctor’s appointment early in the week, which she passed her check up with flying colours. Nights were getting restless for the eight month old, however, as she was quick realizing someone was never around anymore. Matt was rarely home during the day but he always had a bit of time in the mornings to sit with the baby while watching the news. The only thing that would put Clementine to sleep was his black flannel tucked into bed next to her. Every night, after Clementine was gone to bed, Florence sat alone on the balcony overlooking the city with a cup of tea and her thoughts. She often thought about what her life would have been if she stayed in LA with her family. She would be financially stable and have her brother with her - if her parents would have even kept her around after finding out about the pregnancy. There was no other option for Florence.
Friday night came around and Grayson had invited Florence over for dinner with him and Ethan. This meant she needed a babysitter for Clementine. That’s where Michael and Like came in again. Michael and Luke Clifford had been there for her (and her brother) since they first moved to Toronto and were extra supportive when Florence moved back alone, letting her stay at their house until the baby was born and she was on her feet. The men loved Clementine; never complaining about having to take care of her because after raising two boys it was nice to have a bit of a break with a little girl.
Once Grayson texted her that he had arrived, Florence had been dressed and ready for almost 45 minutes; Clementine long gone to the Clifford’s at that point.
Grayson, as usual, was stood against his car when she got to the parking garage. She had to control herself to not literally run to him. Even still, she threw her arms around his shoulders and kissed him. His pink and white striped T-shirt was soft to her touch and the quirky colours made her smile more.
“Hi.” he chuckled, opening the car door for her again.
Grayson and Ethan’s house was out of the downtown core. It was farther west of where the DiCaprio’s lived but just as north. Real estate in Toronto was not cheap and Florence was impressed by the just the fact that two nineteen-year-old’s could afford a single house there. When Grayson turned onto the private street, Florence was even more in awe by the tree lined driveway and the large, single story black painted house and matching car park. A white Jeep with black and red accents as well as a teal old style Bronco and two motorcycles sat under the car park. The sun was setting behind it, golden light spreading over the roof of the house and the paved entryway. Florence was raised in a more luxurious lifestyle than what she was looking at, but growing up on her own meant she had an appreciation for how hard money was to come by.
The double doors let into a small foyer, a hallway to the left and the living room through an open space off to the right. The natural wood tones made the place warm and comforting and had a sense of luxury to it that was far different from the DiCaprio’s.
“E!” Grayson shouted across the house. Florence startled a little bit but played it off.
Ethan came out from the hallway, dressed in a black t-shirt with a white graphic printed on it and white pants. The white designer sneakers were expected.
“It’s you again!” Ethan smiled at Florence, going right in for a hug.
Taken by surprise, Florence hesitantly hugged him back, “Nice to see you again.” she laughed.
Although identical, Ethan’s warm embrace didn’t come close to what she felt like in Grayson’s arms. She wondered how much they told each other. Did Ethan know about how she kissed his brother the same day they met? Did he know about the stories she shared? Did he know that she invited Grayson home on their first date? She told Callum everything so there was no doubt Grayson and Ethan were the same.
Embarrassment bubbling inside her at the idea of it, Florence tried to push it away, following the twins to the living room. The open ceilings revealed the peaked roof and a stone fireplace reached to the top. Two grey couches lined the room with a modern coffee table and area rug in the centre. A record player sat on an antique stereo table in the back corner. The floor to ceiling sliding glass doors at the far end of the room opened onto a tree lined backyard and glistening swimming pool that was a few steps down from a large stone porch. Florence couldn’t help but smile. She felt more at home than she had in almost a year.
The three sat around the living room, Grayson pulling her close next to him. The simple action made Florence eye Ethan shyly, not being used to such displays of affection in front of others. The older twin didn’t think much of it as he asked Florence about Clementine. Florence’s favourite topic of discussion.
Their conversations were filled with laughter and smiles, Florence feeling as light as air with the twins. Usually, in her childhood, conversations were held over glasses of wine and brandy but Florence learned that neither boy had ever had a sip of alcohol in their lives. Thinking back to her father’s short temper under a few drinks, Florence was relaxed by that fact.
It wasn’t long before they started discussing what to eat for dinner. Ethan coming in determined with a, “I was feeling pizza.”
“Sounds good to me.” Florence nodded, looking to Grayson who sat on her left.
“Sure. I can order it.” he agreed.
“Dairy free cheese though.” Ethan pipped up.
“Yes, I know.” Grayson rolled his eyes as he took out his phone to order it.
“Dairy free?” Florence crinkled her nose in Ethan’ direction.
“Yeah I’ve been dairy free for a year. It just doesn’t sit well with my skin or my stomach-“
“Yeah.” Grayson cut him off lightheartedly. “So I have to suffer too.”
“Hey!” Ethan frowned. “I have to suffer with anchovy pizza half the time so you can shut up.”
“Ew. I’d take dairy free pizza over anchovies any day.” Florence shuttered. “I just don’t understand how someone can eat them when they still look like fishies.”
“Fishies!” Ethan laughed.
Grayson chuckled, pulling the blushing girl into his side, kissing the top of her head. It only made the pink on her cheeks turn to red.
When the pizza finally arrived, they moved to the kitchen. Florence felt so comfortable with the two, feeling like she had known them for years already. Dinner finished quickly, the three of them working on the dishes together. Grayson and Ethan ended up chasing each other with wet dishcloths, seeing who could leave the biggest bruise on the other. The evening came to an end, Florence and Grayson finding themselves in his bed, watching a movie on his projector screen. He explained that he and Ethan remolded each other’s rooms and the projector was his brother’s touch. It was ultimately impressive. The movie ended but neither reached to turn it off, letting the credits roll down the wall across from the bed. Grayson had his arms around her, the white sheets tucked up to their waists.
“What’s your goal in life?” Florence whispered through the dimly lit room.
“We’re getting to the deep questions now, huh?” Grayson smirked. “Well...I want to keep working with Ethan in film and media. Maybe produce a couple movies? I want to have a family eventually. Kids for sure. Nice house but not too big. Who needs a big house anyway? Takes money away from traveling.”
Florence smiled up at him, “I love traveling.”
“Have you been to Europe?”
“Italy, England, and France. Father’s work trips.”
“Italy is my favourite.” Grayson admitted. “But I’ve always wanted to go to Norway.”
“Scandinavia looks beautiful.” Florence sighed.
They let the silence rise, their minds set across the ocean.
“Probably will never go, though.” Florence shrugged.
“Whys that?” Grayson asked.
“I would need to start saving right away and I have no job.” Florence laughed lightly like it was obvious.
“Do you want a job?”
“I mean, yeah. But I have no university degree so I won’t get far. Not Norway far.”
“I could get you something at CTV? Nothing big, probably a paid internship but it’s something?”
Florence sat up when she heard this, turning to him in shock, “You can do that for me?”
“Sure I can.” Grayson smiled gently, pressed his palm to her cheek. She leaned into him habitually. “Just to get you started.”
“That would mean so much. Thank you.” Florence whispered.
“You’re welcome.” Grayson chuckled, pulling her in to kiss her softly. “I’ll keep you posted on that.”
Florence nodded, a wide smile taking up her face.
“You have a beautiful smile.” Grayson whispered, tucking her hair behind her ear. The girl looked to her lap, not quite sure how to respond. Her fingers danced over his forearms, soaking in each beautifully chiseled curve of his skin. The trail came to an end where his neck met his jaw, light stubble reaching the surface under the soft touch of her fingertips. His dark hazel eyes watched her carefully, a beautiful honey as sweet and enticing as he was. Grayson watched her silently as her wide eyes soaked in his features, his hands holding her loosely by her waist. She forced herself not to get attached; they had only known each other barely a few weeks. But when his lips were on hers again, every thought in her mind melted away.
Grayson was gentle with her; incredibly gentle to the point that he held her like she was made of glass. He laid her back against the fluffy white bedsheets and down filled pillows, her heartbeat loud in her ears. Long minutes passed before his hand fell between their bodies. Florence grabbed his wrist, stopping him.
Breaking their kiss, she spoke, “You don’t want to do that.”
Grayson leaned back from her, “Why not?”
“I had a baby eight months ago...it is not the same down there. Matt’s told me plenty of times.” she laughed humourlessly. “Believe me, you don’t want to see it.”
“Well, no offence, but I couldn’t give two shits about what that jerk thinks.” Grayson’s kind yet obvious bluntness stunned her. “You know what I think?”
“What?” Florence ask timidly.
“I think that you grew a human in here and brought a new life into this world all on your own. That’s pretty damn incredible. Your body did that, you know? And there’s nothing that is more beautiful than that. Absolutely nothing.”
Florence didn’t know what to say except to kiss him. He knew just how to make her feel more loved than she had in her entire life.
~~
Saturday, September 14th
It was a morning like in the fairy tales; and Florence guessed that if it was possible, birds would be flit fluttering and singing beautiful music outside the large paned window. The sound was definitely not beautiful birds, however, as she awoke to a sharp buzzing. Blinking her eyes open to take in her surroundings, she merely smiled at the sight of Grayson asleep beside her. He, too, shifted at the noise, starting to wake, so Florence hurried to grab her phone from the night table. Daniel’s name flashed across the screen.
“Hey.” she answered quickly, her voice rough.
“Where are you?” Daniel’s normally gentle tone was filled with an edge and it took Florence back with surprise.
“What’s wrong?” she asked quickly, her mind instantly going to Clementine.
“Nothings wrong unless you count me sitting here in this restaurant alone like an idiot waiting for you to show up.” Daniel grumbled.
Florence pulled her phone from her ear to look at the time. 10:48 meant she was way too late to their brunch date.
“Shit, Dani, I’m so sorry.” Florence sighed, rubbing a hand over her face.
“Where are you?” Daniel asked again. “I’ve been texting and calling for 45 minutes!”
“At Grayson’s.”
The silence from the other side of the line made her stomach turn.
“So I’ll just go home then.” Daniel finally spoke, his voice suddenly quiet.
“No!” Florence sat up. “No, I’m sorry. Don’t go home. I’ll be there. 15 minutes. Please.”
“Fine.” Daniel mumbled.
“I’m sorry, Dani.” Florence sighed, closing her eyes.
“Yeah.”
The line went dead without so much as a goodbye. Florence slowly lowered her phone and started at it for a few long seconds.
“Everything okay?” Grayson asked from beside her, wrapping an arm around her waist that was covered by the blankets.
“I’m a terrible friend, is all.” Florence groaned. “Totally just stood up Daniel.”
A low chuckle fell from Grayson’s lips, “That’s rough. Are you going to go still?”
“Yeah. If he’s going to wait for me. Do you want to come?” Florence laid back down, pushing her fingers through his dark hair.
“I would love to.” Grayson smiled, pulling her close to kiss her.
“No more of this!” Florence giggled, pushing him away, before leaning down over the side of the bed to grab her clothes. “We have to go!”
Grayson drove them through the city, as fast as he could legally go. Ethan was still asleep by the time they left which Florence was silently grateful for; she liked Ethan but she wasn’t sure if she was strong enough to be at the end of brotherly teasing after staying over. Florence kept checking her phone in the passenger seat, finding no texts from Daniel their entire way there. The small cafe was just on the way into downtown, a little place near the boys’ house. Grayson parked on the street and paid the meter before they headed inside. Daniel was sat at the corner table, his green Adidas jacket zipped up to his neck and he stared down at his mug of coffee, stirring a spoon around haphazardly. Florence couldn’t help but smile at the sight of her best friend and she pulled Grayson by the hand towards him.
“Dani!” Florence called.
The boy looked up at her and what was supposed to be a smile faded into almost a straight line at the sight of the two in front of him.
“This is Grayson.” Florence introduced happily.
“Nice to meet you finally.” Grayson smiled a warm grin and held out his hand across the table. Daniel hesitated before letting the silver spoon clink against the saucer and he shook his hand.
“You too.” Daniel mumbled. Grayson and Florence sat across from him and picked up their menus. Daniel watched them silently, going back to stirring his now cold coffee. The waitress came by and took their orders and poured them coffee before leaving again. Daniel didn’t take notice, instead, his eyes fell to the collar of Florence’s t-shirt, noticing the small pink bruise that was peaking out the top. There was a matching one under her jawline which she probably hadn’t noticed in her rush to leave that morning. Daniel noticed, though. He noticed Grayson’s hand on her thigh and how he leaned in close to whisper things into her ear that made her giggle. Daniel kept stirring. The clink of the silver against the porcelain cup was consistent and comforting.
“Dani.” Florence called. When he didn’t respond she frowned for a moment but tried again. “Dan.”
She finally resorted to reaching over the table and taking the spoon out of his hand.
“I think your coffee is plenty mixed, dear.”
Snapping back to reality, Daniel met her concerned gaze.
“What’s up with you?” Florence frowned.
“Sorry. I’m just tired.” Daniel waved his hand to brush it off, slouching back against the bench.
“Been working hard?” Florence asked.
“Yeah.” Daniel nodded.
“What are you in school for?” Grayson asked.
“Music Production.” Daniel replied.
“Oh! That’s cool. I’m doing video production at CTV right now.” Grayson smiled.
“Oh my gosh, imagine if you could work together in the future!” Florence laughed.
“We might have a place for you.” Grayson sent a small grin to the boy across the table.
“I’m fine, thanks.” Daniel answered dryly. His response made Florence frown and look to Grayson who shrugged lightly.
“Dani, I’m really sorry for being late.” Florence whispered, leaning in closer. “I don’t know why you’re being so upset with me this morning.”
“I’ve been waiting here for an hour.” Daniel snapped.
Florence sat back with wide eyes at his out-of-character outburst.
“I woke up early to meet you and you completely stand me up and I’m left to eat alone.”
“I said I’m sorry. Time got away from me.” Florence frowned.
“I can tell.” Daniel eyed the hickeys on her neck.
“Daniel!” Florence whispered sharply.
He placed his napkin strongly back on the table and started to slide out from the bench. He then turned to Grayson, “It was nice to meet you. You seem like a really great guy and normally I’m not such an asshole so I’m sorry for that. But I’m late for rehearsal.”
“Daniel!” Florence gaped, watching as he stood up from the table and started for the door. “Daniel Seavey!” she called again. The door of the cafe closed behind him with a jingle from the bell above. Silence filled the space between Grayson and Florence who were now sitting alone.
 ~~
Once breakfast was finished, Grayson dropped Florence back off at home. They took their time saying goodbye but eventually Florence went up to her empty apartment. She called Daniel right away, being sent to voicemail after the second ring.
“Hey. I’m still sorry, you know.” she spoke into the phone. “Call me please. I love you.”
He didn’t return her call.

Top 12 Amazing Ishtar Gate Facts
Tumblr media
The Babylonian Empire ruled over the area referred to as Mesopotamia in modern-day Iraq from the 19th until the 6th century B.C. Their capital was the intriguing city of Babylon, world-famous for presumably featuring one of the wonders of the ancient world, the so-called Hanging Gardens of Babylon. This civilization was well advanced and the city of Babylon, which was located just south of modern-day Baghdad, featured numerous fabulous buildings and monuments. In this article, we're going to take a closer look at some of the most interesting facts about the Ishtar Gate, one of the remains which give us a glimpse into life in the ancient city of Babylon.
1. It was constructed in the 6th century B.C.
The city of Babylon was built on the banks of the Euphrates River and was first mentioned long before the Babylonian Empire was established. The city was featured on a clay tablet during the reign of Sargon of Akkad (2334–2279 B.C.) of the Akkadian Empire. That's almost 2 millennia before the Ishtar Gate was actually constructed, something that happened during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar II who reigned between 604 and 562 B.C. The gate was named in honor of a Babylonian deity named Ishtar, who was quite versatile as she was the goddess of love, beauty, sex, war, justice, and political power.

2. A replica is located in a famous museum in Berlin
The gate was first excavated in the 1930s by German archaeologists who were so astounded by what they found that they completely dismantled the ancient structure and brought it back to Berlin. An exact replica of how the gate looked back in ancient times can now be found at Berlin's Pergamon Museum, one of the famous museums located on Museum Island in the heart of the city.

3. The gate we see today is not the entire original gate
This wonderful gate reached a total height of 15.24 meters (50 feet) and was approximately 30 meters (100 feet) wide built on solid foundations that went up to 13.71 meters (45 feet) into the ground. One of the most remarkable facts about the Ishtar Gate is that this isn't even the entire ancient gate. The original structure was a complex of two major gates of which the one in Berlin is actually the smaller frontal section. The second structure was the larger of the two gates and pretty much adjoined its smaller brother just behind it.

4. The gate was part of one of the main festivals in Babylon
Like any other civilization that has ever existed, there was a yearly party in Babylon that lasted up to 12 days. This religious festival marked the start of the harvest season and one of the man events was the New Year's procession. The so-called "Processional Way" ran north of the Ishtar Gate and had a length of up to 800 meters (2,624 feet) and a width of up to 20 meters at some points (66 feet). That's quite the avenue! This entire ceremonial road was enclosed with brick structures that were heavily decorated with reliefs. These decorations featured a total of 60 lions on both sides that represented the goddess Ishtar.

5. The gate was decorated with reliefs featuring gods and animals
Just as the buildings alongside the Processional Way, the gate itself was decorated with reliefs depicting 2 Babylonian deities taking on the form of the animals that represented them. The chief god of Babylon was named "Marduk" and took on the shape of a dragon with a snake-like head. The second god was "Adad," the storm and rain god in Babylon, who took on the form of an aurochs, a species of large wild cattle. These reliefs were added to a background of glazed bricks which had a distinctive lively blue color. The reliefs were also made of bricks of which the clay was molded into the form of the animals.

More interesting facts about the Ishtar Gate
6. The Ishtar Gate was part of the Walls of Babylon and the 8th gate to the city. Because of its amazing design, it was originally one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It was replaced on that list starting in the 3rd century B.C. by the Lighthouse of Alexandria. 7. The remarkable blue color of the gate is probably a reference to another goddess named Inanna who was closely tied to the goddess Ishtar. The story about this deity mentions that she turned into lapis lazuli, a deep-blue color after being taken to the underworld. 8. The ancient city of Babylon not only featured a wall with enormous gates, but it was also home to various temples and palaces, all built with bricks. It's estimated that about 15 million bricks were used to build all the structures in this fascinating ancient city.

Actual ruins of the Ishtar Gate in the 1930s / Wiki Commons 9. An inscription was found on the Ishtar Gate written in Akkadian cuneiform script. This inscription was created at the same time as the establishment of the gate and, as you surely expected, glorifies both the gods and King Nebuchadnezzar. This inscription reads: Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, the pious prince appointed by the will of Marduk, the highest priestly prince, beloved of Nabu, of prudent deliberation, who has learnt to embrace wisdom, who fathomed Their (Marduk and Nabu) godly being and pays reverence to their Majesty, the untiring Governor, who always has at heart the care of the cult of Esagila and Ezida and is constantly concerned with the well being of Babylon and Borsippa, the wise, the humble, the caretaker of Esagila and Ezida, the first born son of Nabopolassar, the King of Babylon, am I.Both gate entrances of the (city walls) Imgur-Ellil and Nemetti-Ellil following the filling of the street from Babylon had become increasingly lower. (Therefore,) I pulled down these gates and laid their foundations at the water table with asphalt and bricks and had them made of bricks with blue stone on which wonderful bulls and dragons were depicted. I covered their roofs by laying majestic cedars lengthwise over them. I fixed doors of cedar wood adorned with bronze at all the gate openings. I placed wild bulls and ferocious dragons in the gateways and thus adorned them with luxurious splendor so that Mankind might gaze on them in wonder.I let the temple of Esiskursiskur, the highest festival house of Marduk, the lord of the gods, a place of joy and jubilation for the major and minor deities, be built firm like a mountain in the precinct of Babylon of asphalt and fired bricks.Inscription on the gate. 10. This inscription is 15 meters (49.21 feet) tall, 10 meters (32.8 feet) wide, and features 60 lines of writing. A replica of this inscription can also be found at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, even though it's uncertain where exactly this inscription appeared.

The dismantling and reassembling of the Ishtar gate was one of the greatest archaeological achievements at that time in the 1930s. The bricks were carefully placed in 100's of crates and brought to Berlin. Fragments of bricks were pieced together with newly baked bricks. 12. Even though an exact replica of the gate can be found at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, segments of the ancient gate can be found in museums all around the world. These include: - The Detroit Institute of Arts - The Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden - The Louvre in Paris - The State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich - The Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna - The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, - The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York - The Oriental Institute in Chicago - The Rhode Island School of Design Museum - The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston - The Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut - The Istanbul Archaeology Museums - The Istanbul Ancient Orient Museum

Superstar Drake has topped himself. One of the world’s best-selling artists, the 33-year-old rapper now has an over-the-top mansion to match. The OVO chief’s mega manor just landed the coveted cover feature in Architectural Digest. The structural wonder is nicknamed “The Embassy,” and it’s located in the upscale Bridle Path area of Toronto. In the making for years, it’s equipped with quite a few jaw-dropping amenities. Part club, part resort, part rapper’s delight, news of the 50,000-square-foot, super-luxe spread made waves on the web. View this post on Instagram @archdigest @ferrisrafauli A post shared by champagnepapi (@champagnepapi) on Apr 8, 2020 at 4:16am PDT “Insane. Amazing. Congrats man,” said “Million Dollar Listing” star Ryan Serhant. But of course, not everyone was a fan. The opulent, oversized abode brought out the haters on Twitter. Comparisons were drawn to the over-the-top excess often more typical of Vegas than Canada. “Does he live in a casino,” posted @simoncurtis. Another user picked up on the almost corporate vibe of the photos: “Drake live in a hotel lobby lmao,” @AsteadWesley noted. Others drew cinematic parallels: “Did he model his home after the spaceship from ‘Passengers’?,” asked @Prasejeebus. One person found the place too spacious. “Drake’s mansion is perfect for physically distancing … you could go days without seeing another person in this place!” posted @Chum1045. Our favorite comment hit a humorous note, as it poked some fun at the home’s velvet-rope-and-bottle-service vibes… Drake's house look like the type of place that overcharges you for a bottle of Tito's Vodka before they let you in. pic.twitter.com/lKa58xhwIT — Jian DeLeon (@jiandeleon) April 8, 2020 ——— While we don’t know if there’s a two-bottle minimum to get in the door, we did learn three key items about Drake’s new digs. 1. It’s designed with timelessness in mind “Because I was building it in my hometown, I wanted the structure to stand firm for 100 years. I wanted it to have a monumental scale and feel,” Drake told AD. “It will be one of the things I leave behind, so it had to be timeless and strong,” he added. Designed by architect and interior designer Ferris Rafauli, the space is constructed of classic (and pricey) materials, such as bronze, marble, limestone, and “exotic woods.” But Rafauli was careful not to veer into gaudy territory and opted for high-end finishes. “This isn’t stucco, paint, and fake gold,” Rafauli told AD. “That’s not what Drake wanted, and that’s not what I do.” However, the maximalist interiors are opulent and extravagant. The architect posted a photo of himself and the homeowner in his new construction, adding, “It’s not often you meet someone that shares the same passion. This one was a win before we got started.” View this post on Instagram “It’s overwhelming high luxury,” says rapper Drake (@champagnepapi) of the Toronto home he has been crafting over the past six years alongside designer @ferrisrafauli. “That message is delivered through the size of the rooms and the materials and details of the floors and the ceilings. I wanted to make sure people can see the work I’ve put in over the years reflected from every vantage point.” Indeed, the scale of the rooms sets the tone for the home experience from the moment one enters the vast entry hall, above, which is clad in solid limestone with beveled inserts of Nero Marquina marble beneath a faceted ceiling of antique mirror framed in bronze, while two sculptures by @kaws flank the doorway. Amenities are off the hook When news first broke that the recording artist planned to build a custom home in his native Toronto, the plans called for a 21,000-square-foot mansion. That now seems almost quaint. The finished product is over twice that size, and features a NBA regulation-size indoor basketball court with a 21-square-foot pyramidal skylight, a massive great room with 44-feet-high ceilings with bespoke piano, and a chandelier composed of 20,000 pieces of hand-cut Swarovski crystal. Inside the lavish living quarters, chandeliers hang over the marble staircases. There’s also a recording studio, an awards room to showcase the rapper’s awards, a hall of sports jerseys, and an indoor pool. View this post on Instagram Inside the Toronto home he built from the ground up, rapper Drake (@champagnepapi) likens the world-class recording studio (above) to “eccentric 1970s studios mixed with Annabel’s in London.” A backlit panel of brown agate semi-precious stone softly illuminates the studio lounge which is outfitted with a custom sofa, @erwan_boulloud aluminum cocktail table and vintage Ricardo Fasanello chair. The uber-luxe bedroom is as big as some homes Measuring in at 3,200 square feet, the master bedroom is a retreat large enough to house an average-sized family. According to AD, it’s Drake’s favorite part of the property. He invested quite a few stacks in the suite’s development. Tremblay’s design style moves along asymmetrical lines. L-shapes, horizontal lines and stripes are her signature lines along with balanced color contrast, sumptuous textures and custom-made furniture. Every interior design project that she creates evoke raw, emotional power.
The client of this modern design project is the owner of several car dealerships in Ramsey Lake, Sudbury, a city located in the north of Toronto. The couple hired Atelier Cachet to create the interior design of their 1300m2 house that would suit their family lifestyle. The modern home took 3 years to be built and has 7 baths, 4 powder rooms and 7 bedrooms including 140m2 of terraces, an infinity edge pool and spa.

Are you looking for countertop material?
Nowadays, more and more people are showing interest in quartz countertops. This is because of not only their attractive appearance, but also their durability. If you are seeking for countertop materials, Vicostone will help to satisfy huge demand as it provides surfaces for all kinds of spaces from kitchen and bathroom countertops to countertop material for a lab. Keyword: green countertop material, black countertop material, thin countertop material, lab countertop material, hardest countertop material Why should you consider quartz countertops? If you want to redecorate your kitchen with something attractive that can make you feel comfortable whenever you get home, a quartz countertop is an ideal choice. Quartz, a manufactured material, is much more attractive and colourful (?) than some types of natural stones, such as, granite and marble. You also do not have to worry about the material’s durability as it is as durable as concrete. There are many types of countertops so that you can easily choose the colours, designs, thickness, and size of countertop that fit your needs. There is also no need to care about stains every time you finish cooking a meal. Thanks to its non-porous feature, quartz can resist major stains such as coffee, juice, wine, and oil better than granite and concrete. Now you are able to keep your kitchen, bathroom, or lab cleaner with quartz countertop materials.  Where to buy quartz countertop: (or Where can you buy a quartz countertop?) There are many manufacturers in the quartz countertop market providing glorious countertop materials. Vicostone is among the most famous companies in this sector.  Vicostone was founded in December 2002 at the Hoa Lac High-Tech Park of Vietnam. As a pioneer in the sector of manufacturing quartz material in Asia, Vicostone provides an enormous range of countertops that can satisfy the huge demand of consumers. Vicostone has successfully built a global distribution network, bringing their best quartz countertop to consumers in all continents.    Vicostone provides a huge range of quartz countertops. Source: halin.vn We will provide some products from this manufacturer that you can consider when making a decision to redecorate your house. Nero Marquina BQ8740 Nero Marquina is a unique product from the Vicostone Thunder Series, which is sure to give a special charm to any surface. The black countertop material Nero Marquina was first introduced at the 2018 Collection at Toronto’s Interior Design Show. This is a show aimed at celebrating the brand’s fifteen-year history. The combination of two basic high-contrast colours black and white makes this quartz countertop more mysterious. The white lightning bolt veins were put on the deep black night sky. This black countertop material even was used in the Toronto penthouse project by Peter Brooks.   Brooks decided to use Nero Marquina on the custom bar top and standing bar table in the game room without any hesitation as he loved this product at first sight. Using this countertop material, there was no need for additional decoration or artwork on the walls of the game room as it is already so beautiful and unique on its own.  There are two thickness options available. You can consider the thin countertop material (20mm), or the thicker countertop material (30mm) to choose what kind you need. Cemento BQ8730 Cemento is another product from Vicostone’s Thunder Series. The elegant Cemento countertop material, which has a dark grey background with white bolt veins, will bring attraction to your kitchen. The very first intention of Vicostone when manufacturing this dark grey countertop is for backsplashes and kitchen islands. However, Paul Semkuley, after using this incredible product for a private bathroom, and found that it can be a perfect element for the bathroom. He added that he would choose Cemento for his shower area, including a master ensuite vanity and a threshold. It is dreamy while still elegant with bolt white veins in the dark grey background. The jumbo size of Cemento countertop is 165cm×330cm. With this product, Vicostone offers three thickness options, including 12mm, 20mm and 30mm. If you are finding thin countertop material, Cemento product can be a good choice not only due to its thickness option but also due to its attractive design. Diamante BQ8788 Diamante is a product from the Exotic Collection which includes premium products promising to create a luxurious look for your house and satisfaction for even the some of the most fastidious consumers. Diamante material is suitable for any purpose. Source: Vivid Stones If you are looking for a smooth and neutral quartz countertop material, it is hard to find any material that is more perfect than Diamante. Diamante material is polished, so it is smooth to the touch. Moreover, this product is suitable for any purpose, whether you want to use it in your kitchen, your bathroom, or your lab. There are darks veins spread over a pale background, giving it an elegant, attractive, and natural look. According to Semkuley, it will be most amazing to use Diamante countertop for cladding of the fireplace because it can create a modern and innovative point for the whole room.   Read the full article

Top 10 Summer Vacations 2018
And as Canadians continue to struggle with a weakened dollar and creeping fuel prices, should we consider packing up the car and the kids and make a road trip to southwestern Ontario or perhaps east to Prince Edward County and the beaches of Sandbanks or go further afield and splurge on a trip to Paris for a little je ne sais quoi?  Whatever your summer vacation plans, here are some tripstations options to make following your summer vacation dreams a reality.
Prince Edward County, Ontario
Six friends and former Toronto neighbours have gathered at a Cherry Valley cottage for a Good Friends and Good Wine weekend in The County to reunite, reminisce, and share some laughs over the incredible wine, food and friendship The County has to offer. We linger over a late breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt and savoury scones and lots of hot, head-remedying coffee before we trundle ourselves into our van for day one of wine tasting, shopping, and memory making. And, like the rural quaintness of the French River of Nova Scotia and the excitement of the Napa Valley of the 1980’s, the County has grown up! Our rustic next door neighbour is growing up and attracting local, national and international attention offering exciting wineries, farm to table restaurant choices, unique shopping, local artisanal foods and cheeses, and serving up a warm-hearted and generous way of life, steeped in rural tradition with just a hint of modern thinking.
Prince Edward County continues to captivate her visitors with a spirit and engagement that is exciting to witness.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Planning on heading east from Toronto this summer? Then make Halifax, where friendly Haligonians enjoy their music-filled pubs and rooftop patios, a must-stop on your Atlantic adventures. I just returned from five rather cool, rainy and beer-soaked days in this historic gateway to the East Coast, but the soggy weather certainly did not dampen the locals’ spirits in their rowdy, packed bars, pubs, and patios, literally spilling over with plentiful and flowing local craft beer. Grab some food, quaff some ale, and if you linger into the evening, you will be treated to one of the many local bands that pump out long sets of popular and traditional music to the hand clapping, spontaneous dancing revelers that Halifax is known for.
Nova Scotia
The Princess of Acadia chugs her way into the grey, fog-swept Digby Gut and gracefully docks, allowing eager camper-vanners, Japanese tourists and some home-sick locals to disembark and begin their summer vacations or to simply ‘head home.’ The 3-hour crossing has been uneventful, other than a possible breach sighting of some whales as we approach the Digby Neck. Nestled between South Mountain and the Bay of Fundy lies the fertile Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia’s farming center and we have 5 days of touring and exploring the coastal roads of the  Annapolis Basin,  including some family time, some great meals and cocktails on sunset decks, watching the clammers clamber over the low-tide mud  and a slowly rising full moon, begging to be howled at.
Southwestern Ontario
Ontario’s Southwest is perhaps one of the prettiest and rural parts of the world. This time of year the western sun sits lower and more reflective on the gently rolling hills west of Toronto. Travel the 403/407/401 route and avoid the headache of the 401/427/403 interchange hassle. Once past Milton, you’re home free and will enjoy the beautiful green, undulating summer landscapes and rich farmland west of Kitchener, New Hamburg and onto Stratford and St. Jacobs. Looking for more adventure?  Continue up to Ontario’s West Coast and  Lake Huron, Bayfield,  Goderich and north towards Southampton, famous for its fabulous sunsets and on any given Saturday summer evening, be serenaded by the skirl of a bagpipe at the foot of High Street.
Toronto
Toronto is a four-season city full of eating and drinking patios, fabulous roof-top hotel views and foodie neighbourhoods, brimming over with tourists and locals alike. We love our city in the spring, summer, and Indian summer-fall and have been known as well to plop ourselves down on a winter-white park bench to extend our patio cravings. As summer approaches, we have some recommendations to make your Toronto stay-cation a memorable one!
Quebec City
La Belle Ville de Québec is home to the continent`s first parish Church, its first Museum, first Anglican Cathedral, first French-speaking University and the continent’s oldest Hospital. At first glance, no romantic, French glamour to be seen nor the apparent sprucing up that La Ville undertook for their 400th anniversary a couple of years ago. But very soon a warm and welcoming magic will embrace you as you pull up to your Relais and Chateaux listed  Auberge Saint-Antoine, situated an ancient stone’s throw from Le Vieux Port in La Belle Ville’s Old Lower Town and feel your excitement grow in anticipation of your vacation in La Belle Ville de Quebec!
Michigan
Summer isn’t the only time to experience the shores of western Michigan. Ice cream, fudge stores, family dining, unique antiques, lovely beaches, quaint B & B ’s and a well established Artists Community await those who hop in their cars and do the 6.5-hour drive from Toronto to this undiscovered and virtually unknown to Canadians, part of Western Michigan. Unlike those mid-summer bathing togs and sun hats, Michigan’s fall harvest flannels, coveralls and snow pants can be a bit more unkempt and rustic. But don’t let that stop you from heading west along I-69 to Flint, flanking to the north of Lansing before merging onto the I-96 toward Grand Rapids and experiencing this unique part of Western Michigan.
Provincetown, Massachusetts
Dreaming of an all-American, bunting and burgers kind of summer beach vacation this year? Then the hurdy-gurdy, loud lewdness of Commercial Street in Provincetown, Massachusetts is for you. Join the throngs of foot traffic that daily battle the crowds of car-laden, lost tourists on the one lane, one-way main street that dissects downtown PTown from east to west. The West End beckons the party boys and their boozy BFF girlfriendz, the Bears, the Muscle Boys and yes even some well-heeled Cape Cod Tourists and Boston Ferry Day-Trippers, kids and strollers in tow, sharing some casual West End Herring Cove or Racepoint Beach time with a saucy drag queen. Ahh, summer in this, the first and original summer beach resort in America.
Vermont
The Blackburn and Suessdorf standard ‘Moonlight in Vermont’ softly serenades as a languid late afternoon summer sun greets us as we roll through the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. It has been a long 9-hour drive, and we are in the middle of Vermont ski country, in August, and neither of us ski. Our hotel’s website offers outdoor activities such as ‘romantic sleigh rides’ and ‘grab a pair of snowshoes’ but we have decided to discover the beauty of Vermont with the last waning days of a hot, dry summer and tour the green, rural roads of small-town New England. Southern Vermont resorts offer a unique style of vacation and are completely different in harvest ‘moonlight’ August than they are in the ‘icey finger waves’ of February.  From hiking Vermont’s state parks or fishing and wildlife viewing to those simply craving quiet downtime or a ‘romantic setting’ long weekend at a luxury resort as we were, there is nothing like a summer vacation in Vermont. Enjoy some country luxury, indulge in some downtime, wander in the green. ‘You and I and moonlight in Vermont’: beautiful in any season.
  Paris
When you think about Paris, which tripstations does ALOT, you probably think about the Eiffel Tower; Bateaux Mouches rides on the Seine or perhaps un café or demi-litre of white wine in cozy, cobbled pavement cafés –the usual, touristy things to do in Paris. Why not wander away from the ‘usual suspects’ and explore some of the more unusual things to do in Paris, experiencing a taste of what local Parisians enjoy every day, and especially in the summer, when most Parisians exercise their four-week August vacation options and exit the city to the countryside and seashores of the south and west.

A Peek Inside My Small and Simple Kitchen
Since moving to Squamish, I’ve intentionally chosen to live without a few things and get comfortable in my space before buying anything for it. To give you a visual, this originally meant living without a couch for the first two-and-a-half months and having only a chair to sit on. (I finally bought a couch in June!) I also moved without a coffee table and a desk, both of which I am still on the hunt for.
It’s hard to believe I have already been here for four months. While I haven’t put all the pieces of the puzzle together yet, it does feel like home now – my home – and I think a huge part of that is because of how much time I spend in my kitchen.
I was hesitant to ever share pictures of this condo I’m renting for many reasons. On top of wanting to maintain a little bit of privacy, I also didn’t want to contribute to the ideas we are shown about how minimalism should look. But it was a good friend who helped me see I could open the cupboard doors and share stories about what’s inside my kitchen, instead. This is the same friend who suggested I show how I travel light.
In the coming months, I’m going to be sharing a lot more conversations about how minimalism looks different for everyone. Today, I’ll show you how it looks in my small and simple kitchen. As you’ll see, it doesn’t all match but it works – and that is a gift. <3
What’s Inside My Small and Simple Kitchen
First, I know the word “small” is relative. In this case, I actually have more cupboards and storage here than we do in our family home in Victoria (and you’ll see that much of it goes unused). I also know it’s at least double the size of what most apartments have in places like NYC. So, I’m comparing the size of my current kitchen to most of the ones we see on TV shows, in magazines and on Pinterest. The kitchens we’re told to dream about.
I also consider it small because I cook and bake a lot, and find I only ever use the tiny bit of counter space between the stove and the sink. (Note to my future self: If you ever have the luxury of being able to design a kitchen, add lots of counter space between those two things! That’s where you need it most!)
If you’ve seen tours of some other minimalist kitchens, the first thing you might notice about mine is that I leave things on the counter. I stand by my statement: a home is meant to be lived in, not looked at. For the purpose of these pictures, I didn’t move anything around. My wallet and keys stayed on the counter because that’s where they live. And a few pictures down, you’ll also see my phone charger because that’s where my phone spends most of its time, too. Aside from wiping the counters clean, this is how my kitchen looks every day.
What you’re seeing here is the space in which I do most of my drink prep. I make coffee, tea and a smoothie almost every day, so I leave the things I use on the counter at all times. As a tip, putting things in places where you’ll actually use them is the best way to make it a habit. If you’re trying to save money by buying less takeout coffee, or less takeout food or beverages in general, leave the things you need in places where you can easily gravitate towards them. The same is true if you’re simply trying to eat or drink better. Don’t hide the healthy stuff. Leave it on the counter or at least keep it in a place you look at often.
Something I hadn’t thought of until looking at this picture is how much of what I use was gifted or handed down to me. My parents gifted me most of my pots and pans when I moved out on my own in my early twenties, after getting out of a bad relationship. They also gave me the teapot and the crockpot (slow cooker) for Christmas one year. And in realizing she wasn’t using it often, my aunt gave me her Nutribullet. It’s not fancy and it doesn’t all match, at this point – but it works. My family helped me create a working kitchen, and for that, I will always be grateful. (Oh and yes, that’s my “pantry”. Pretty empty, eh? More on food in a future post!)
I also bought everything you see here. And again, I keep the things I use most often out and ready. In this picture, that includes cooking utensils, coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil.
One thing to note here is there’s a huge cupboard in the corner – both top and bottom – that I simply never use. Not only do I not own anything that would fit in there, they are also extremely annoying to open and close because of how small the doors are. I find new designs fascinating because even with everything we know about maximizing space, we still waste so much of it. (I also have a “den” that’s no bigger than a standard closet. Maybe that’s a side rant?) I also don’t use the space above the microwave, but that has more to do with the fact that my ceilings are deceptively high (at least 9 feet) and I can’t reach the top shelves!
For fun, I thought I’d give you a peek inside my cupboards and drawers. The one cupboard I do use in this picture is next to the microwave and it’s mostly filled with spices.
I only use three of the four drawers in my kitchen.
And I spend the majority of my time in this half of the kitchen.
Like I said in the beginning, I use the tiny bit of counter space between the stove and the sink to do most of my food prep. It’s also nice to do food prep near the compost bin because that’s where most of my waste goes! And despite having a dishwasher, I find it’s easier to do dishes by hand when you live alone. I’ll run the dishwasher once a week, usually after doing a bunch of meal prep. But on a day-to-day basis, it’s easier to wash the few dishes I use by hand and let them dry on the mat. (I didn’t feel the need to put these away either. You all do dishes. You know what they look like!)
Something I’ve learned about myself is that I will use the same glass for water multiple days in a row, but I use at least two mugs each day (sometimes more) for coffee and tea. So I could actually do with fewer glasses! But on the days I run my dishwasher, it’s not uncommon for all of these mugs to be in there.
Finally, everything you see in this cupboard was a gift. I’ve been using the same set of Corelle dishes since I was eighteen years old. They weren’t made for Pinterest pictures, but they work (and they never break). And my old roommate in Toronto gave me the mixing bowls. I use these so much, they should almost live on the counter.
So, that’s it! The contents of my kitchen. It’s not exactly small, although the amount of space I use in it is. And if you noticed everything (including what’s on the front of my fridge) was lined up, I should mention it’s always like that – because I have always been like that. Ever since I was a kid, I have kept things lined up, often in orders of colour or size, and perfectly organized. I don’t know how or why, that’s just the way my brain works. When I worked at the deli in a grocery store, I used to think I’d enjoy stocking shelves more because I naturally want everything to be facing the same direction. Can’t explain it – but I won’t complain about it!
If you’re reading this post and wondering what exactly goes into a small/simple/minimalist kitchen, here is a detailed list of what’s in mine:
The Kitchen Appliances I Use
coffee grinder
electric kettle
French press
teapot
NutriBullet (small blender for smoothies)
crockpot (aka slow cooker)
electric whisk
The Kitchen Utensils I Use
8 x glass cups* / 8 x mugs
8 x bowls / 8 x small plates / 8 x large plates
set of eating utensils
1 x santoku knife (currently the only sharp knife I own)
1 x can opener, scissors, hand grater, veg peeler, garlic press, ice cream scoop, melon baller
3 x cutting boards
1 x wok / 3 x pans / 4 x pots
1 x turner / 2 x wooden spoons / 2 x rubber spatulas / 1 x whisk
1 x strainer
set of plastic food storage containers
set of glass measuring cups
set of plastic measuring cups and spoons
set of plastic mixing bowls
set of baking sheets (not pictured – they live in the drawer below the oven!)
spiralizer (yes, I use this often!)
1 x travel mug
2 x water bottles (different sizes)
3 x plastic cups for my friends’ kids when they visit :)
2 x dish cloths
4 x dish towels
mini oven mitts
indoor compost bin!
*my mason jars double as glass storage containers :)
Things I Live Without
a knife block (I currently only own one sharp knife)
a toaster (I don’t buy much bread, and don’t need to toast it if I do)
Things I’m Considering Buying
a ladle (still need to replace my last one)
a paring knife
a fine-mesh strainer
a large glass food storage container (for things I bake like muffins)
a food processor (or a bigger/proper blender)
As part of the slow food experiment, I thought I would also share more about the food I buy, and show you what’s inside my cupboards and fridge. Look out for that post on Wednesday!
For now, I’d love to know what your favourite item in your kitchen is and why. I’m torn between my French press and my Nutribullet. Let’s go with my Nutribullet because it makes an amazing smoothie!

For now, I’d love to know what your favourite item in your kitchen is and why. I’m torn between my French press and my Nutribullet. Let’s go with my Nutribullet because it makes an amazing smoothie!

Modern Heroes: George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg
Today’s modern heroes are George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg who lead one of the most highly regarded design firms in the world. Their work ranges across the commercial space (hotels, restaurants, retail and hospitality) to high-end homes and beautiful furniture. We caught up with them at the launch of their latest collections to learn about their process of creation and collaboration.
IDEALIST: How did you guys start working together?
George: Actually we met in school… in nursery school! We went to this four-year programme in Toronto and that’s where we met. Then a couple years later after we graduated we ran into each other on the street in New York. I hadn’t seen Glenn in years and that same day running into him we were both looking for studio space. Every place I saw, the rent was too expensive or it was too big, so we ended up sharing the space, but we both had our own ambitions.
Glenn: And then we started working on each other’s projects.
George: We started helping each other with deadlines and then we thought, well who’s going to pay for that coffee and the cream in the fridge? I think sometimes when you don’t plan things they set up a synergy of their own… so that’s what happened.
IDEALIST: What are you showing today?
George: We’re showing this, which is the Blink Collection with Stellar Works and we’re showing a desk and vanity for Glass Italia.
The Blink Collection by Yabu Pushelberg for Stellar Works
The Blink collection includes a range of tables (coffee, side, dining) in round and oval form and in stone and dark wood finishes; a one, two and three seater sofa, a drinks cabinet, a console, vanity and various chairs. The look throughout is understated elegance (pink, grey, sable, dark wood) and luxury finishes). If you were to kit out a penthouse suite for laid-back cocktails, or late night drinks, this collection would set the scene perfectly.
The vanity and desk for Glass Italia both use beautiful curved glass to form the top and the legs of the tables. These are luxury minimalism at its best.
Vanity desk by Yabu Pushelberg for Glass Italia
George: This is one piece of glass: a flat piece of glass. We just did two cuts into it and then put it into the oven …
IDEALIST: How do you achieve the fold in it?
Glenn: I’m not telling you it’s a secret!
Glenn: We’re showing these simple pieces but then we’re planning this for a hotel. It can grow and grow into a system. It came from me doing glassware which we’re presenting at ICFF (North America’s largest series of design events for interiors) New York next month.
IDEALIST: Where did your ideas start from, as your work is quite eclectic?
George: Inspiration comes from all over. I find that sometimes you see things but they’re not really what you think you saw but then you look at that idea and think oh, that could be an interesting detail, for a chair leg for instance. It happens to me a lot. I think lately my eyes have been reversing themselves in my old age. The last six years my eyes have actually been improving.
IDEALIST: When does that happen?
Glenn: I don’t know. I think he’s the only one.
George: I start seeing things because my contacts are too strong I start seeing weird things and that becomes a random source of inspiration!
George: If we’re doing a scheme for a hotel, we also have a way of coming up with a narrative: a fictional backstory based on the owners of the hotel, going back to their roots, the story of, say, a guy coming back from grad school to inherit his family’s land and building the property we are designing. We create these stories to help flesh out our style and our teams build on the script.
Glenn: For example, we might be working on a project for a relaxed hotel that has an English vibe to it, so the look and the flow need to be a certain way. It helps to add context.
IDEALIST: So, across your different ranges and collections, you must be working to different timelines. How do you deal with that? Is there a long gestation period?
George: Well, we like it short.  It’s funny we had a meeting with a good friend who’s the creative director of a major furniture firm and he was proud to have taken the process of designing a chair from seven years to four years… For us – it’s more like nine months. We have to get it done.
James Collection stool by Yabu Pushelberg for Stellar Works
George: We did this fold up stool for the James collection [a beautiful piece which while recalling the shape of fold out camp stools is finished in warm and tactile black metal, solid walnut and sable-tone matte leather.]. It took us nine months to figure it all out including the rubber bumpers and a new folding mechanism.
Glenn: Of course it went through rigorous engineering and testing, but it’s a new take on flat pack — and you don’t have to go looking for a screwdriver when you take it out!
George: We like to challenge convention. We had this idea where we had a competition in the office to draw spiritual beings, otherworldly beings within a Canadian setting.  Now, through this contest I said let’s make a family of these beings and then let’s design a series of vases, house furniture etc for them. So, this is our project for next year. I don’t know how we’re going to produce it or how we’re going to show it, but it’s going to be very interesting as usual and exotic.
IDEALIST: What do you look for when you hire to your studio?
Glenn: Enthusiasm. It counts for a lot.
George: But we also mould them. If people are there for the right reason, we’re interested in absorbing and understanding people’s challenges … and that’s why we’re also interested in teaching. Giving them history, background and coaching them is important — but if someone is very rational I’ll say, okay, let’s try something that’s non-rational and that keeps the energy going.
Glenn Pushelberg and George Yabu
Glenn: It’s like throwing them a curveball to challenge their stability and see what happens.
George: It’s a very collaborative process. How can we work fast, in detail and to high quality? That’s through teamwork: We’ll start with the inspiration and the notion, then turn it over to the team. We meet very often and everybody can critique the work, work on it, discuss it, refine it and once we get to the end, then we’ll go on to the factory. With Glass Italia, the first prototypes we saw weren’t quite right, so we sat down in the factory and drew it again … and ended up with this beautiful table.
IDEALIST: You work with such a range of different materials and a range of different manufacturers. It must be stressful maintaining the quality that you’re known for.
George: That’s the exciting part. We work with very dedicated and experienced manufacturers, but we like to challenge them and they need to be flexible.
IDEALIST: How do you maintain your vision across your different collections and materials?
Glenn: I think what we’re known for, our common thread, is a high level of detail and a high level of understanding proportions.
The Blink Collection by Yabu Pushelberg for Stellar Works
IDEALIST: The finishes are all beautiful. That runs through everything.
George: Yes – with the tables of different heights, the easiest thing would be to raise the stem, but we didn’t do that. The legs of each different table are at different angles. That makes it much more interesting to look at.
Glenn: I’m interested in learning new things. We’re publishing a book series too. We found somebody who is a brilliant editor. The third book is the best of them yet. We’re excited because we’re learning how to publish books. The fourth one that we’re going to do we’re just brainstorming now it’s called Pretty Ugly or Ugly Sexy. It’s going to be about beauty.
George: If a building is too pretty then it can’t be that good.
Glenn: But also, if something is on the verge of being ugly it’s actually at its most beautiful … and then there is that point where it turns into something else.
Here at The Idealist we can say that there’s nothing belle laide about anything in the Yabu Pushelberg collection right now. Their roster of high profile commercial clients and manufacturers attests to that. If you get chance to visit the ICFF at New York’s Javitt’s Center, don’t miss the chance to take a look at their collections. You never know — they may even tell you the secret of how they made that amazing glass desk!
