Splash, Shiver, Dash, Texas 70.3

I wish I could take back the gloating I did as I flew away from a chilly, snowy Denver for Galveston, Texas. I was duly punished, as Texas threw up a misery of freezing wind and rain and not a moment of sunshine for the whole weekend. I have never raced so cold.
When I found out we were moving to Colorado, I sent this pic to my coach, I was excited by the prospect of training at altitude. I joked that this was going to be me when I came back down to race at sea level. We have been living near Denver for a about 3 months now. At 1750m, the air is dry and thin. It has been tough to adapt. My training has felt so darn hard and it was getting me down at times. I just had no idea if any of this was working. I had not been hitting my run paces without significant effort and my swims have felt rotten. My watts on the bike took a dive and jogging up a set of stairs still leaves me gasping. Galveston Texas is about as sea level as you can get, this was going to be a great test.
I am a stalker. I sus out the competition before a race and fret when I see a fast girl. The ex pro in my age group intimidated me. She has some amazing bike splits and looks to run pretty solid off the bike. I did eventually talk myself around to, “race your own race, you can't control who shows up, this is about racing smart,” etc and I did get keen to race, I was feeling quite ok by the Saturday before the race and was feeling keen to smash out a hard effort. (Probably just giddy from all the extra O2!)
I made a great friend a few years ago at a race in Calgary. As we made the journey down to Texas we counted that this would be the 9th, almost 10th race together. In all that time, he has not had a podium. He trains hard and smart and is always so close. It has frustrated him for years. Anyway, this time felt different, he has a new coach and has amped up his training, on recent training rides I have had to go a little dark to keep on his wheel. I know he is an experienced racer but he still has to “race his own race, can’t control who turns up, yada, yada, yada.” So I was nervous for Jeff.
Race day was bitterly cold. I joked about putting hot chocolate into my bottles and I put my wetsuit on 90mins before my race because it was so cold and I was shivering.
I got to the swim start, saw a couple of familiar faces and spotted the gal I was worried about. She had such a confident demeanour, I stayed close hoping it might rub off on me! The deep water start in the salty Offatts Bayou was the warmest I felt all day. We took off and I was aware of a group of about 4 girls going out hard and could see they were a good 5m ahead by the first buoy. I was sucking in waves, I was breathing every stroke and was feeling really ineffective. I was sure everyone was suffering the same from the chop but I had lost sight of the lead girls and had no idea where the fast gal was. I had a shitty swim time but, I do know I was working hard and can not question my effort. I was bummed about the almost 34min swim time and was completely convinced that I had a lot of ground to make up.
I pushed into T1. I may have run past my bike and had a bit of a struggle getting my wetsuit off but still got out and on my bike pretty quick. The 1st km was a series of bends and turns and zig zagging waterlogged cyclists, I did not dare to fuss with my shoes or get aero until I was well clear!
We hit the hwy, it was freezing and windy. On a training day like that I would normally have gloves and double socks, long pants, neck warmer, etc, (haha, who am I kidding, I would have been watching Homeland on my Kickr in my basement!) but here I was in thin wet lycra. Brutal. “Ok”, I thought, “push some watts, get aero and get this out of the way.” The watts I was aiming for on the bike were PR numbers. It took about 20mins before I could get there, but once I did I found myself in a perfectly manageable level of discomfort. I did not want to back off and kept focused. Then it started to rain and I was a little nervous in aero, my hands were cold, and was having trouble seeing through my visor. At that point I just wanted to get this bike thing over with. I made the turn around in 1:06, and hit a bit of wind. It slowed me down somewhat but not too bad, I continued to push on. As we got closer to town, the rain eased off and stopped and I was feeling less sketchy although I was still too cold to trust myself with grabbing my rear bottle, so I was a little behind on fluids and cals by the time I got into T2. I glided in feeling really happy with my sub 2:25 bike split and as it turned out, the fastest female age grouper bike split of the day. (Yes, threshold hill repeats up Lookout Mt are clearly worth the pain.) I missed my target normalised power by 1 watt, but it was still my highest in a 70.3 by 1 watt!
T2 was uneventful. I got out, grabbed a gel and some Gatorade from the 1st aid station. My feet felt like slabs of frozen meat and I was turning over a cadence like a hamster because I was not sure exactly where my feet were. I still had no clue where I was in the field. The 3 loop course was busy, I had hoped to see who was where at one of the many out and back sections on the course but it was all a blur. I loved the 3 x 7km loops. I was focused on even splits and then pushing what I had left for the last 5k. I was not slowing down and was on target for a run PR and an overall race PR, it felt great to hit both those, I have never been under 4:40 for a 70.3 or under 1:37 for my 70.3 half marathon, and to put that run together after pushing my best ever watts on the bike felt so so good. I crossed the line in 4:38:32. Regardless of where I came, I could not question my effort or execution.
My 1st priority was to get some clothes on, I was freezing within minutes of finishing. I got back to the car to meet up with Jeff who lept out of the car grinning and giggling. He had nabbed is 1st ever podium and informed me that I had come 1st in my AG. I will count this as one of my most memorable triathlon moments. I think I may have screamed “YESSSS!!” A brilliant moment! I was thrilled for my friend and then shocked at my own result. I really did not expect to beat that fast girl.
The Ironman store did great business that day as frozen athletes bought up extra layers to deal with the weather. I was happy with my new $20 pyjama pants and at the time would have happily paid double. I did not care how tragic I looked, I was freezing! I should credit Jeff with this pic, even though he only took it to mock me.

Watching Jeff (on the right) claim his trophy was quite a moment and claiming my own felt pretty darn good too. I pulled off the fastest age group bike split of the day missed 3rd place age grouper by less than 1s and placed 22nd of all women (including the 23 pros.)

Thank you to both my coach Rick Schopp and my husband, Simon, your support, wisdom and letting me chase you around on the bike has helped me get to an amazing place. I will quit moaning about how horrible the training feels up here right now.

Your Choices Of Material When Looking For Swim Caps For Competition
When you are looking for swimming hats for competitive racing you can use a different type of hat for racing in a pool from that which you would use for racing in open waters.
Swimming hats and caps can be made in a variety of different materials, including latex, spandex, lycra, rubber, neoprene, and silicone. By far and away, the most popular material is silicone, but if you were looking for triathlon swim caps you might want to consider neoprene. This is because neoprene is a fairly thick material – thicker than silicone – and when you are going to have to swim 1.5 km, which is the standard recommended by the Olympic authorities, in cold water, you want to keep as much heat in as possible. Neoprene is the same material which wetsuits are made from.
Of course, it does depend on the time of year and also the area that you will be swimming in. If you are on the equator you will probably want something a lot cooler, but in many instances a triathlon will be swum in water under 62 degrees and if this is the case, neoprene is the recommended material. However, if you have never worn a neoprene swim cap before, you should try it on and get used to it a couple of times before racing.
This is because neoprene swim caps are quite tight and feel restrictive, so you don't want to pop one on your head for the first time just before diving into the water at the start of your triathlon because it could put you off your stroke – in this instance quite literally! Some neoprene swim caps also have a chin strap which covers your ears, and you want to get used to this as well if you are going to wear that design.
However, if you are going to swim in warmer waters you could well consider silicone for nec telephone system. This is not as thick as neoprene, by any manner of means, and is certainly more comfortable to wear, but it is thicker than latex, so will keep in more heat than a latex cap. Latex is a better material for a pool or in warmer waters because it is thinner so it lets more heat out than the thicker silicone caps do, but it does tend to wear out quite quickly – again because it is thinner. It also has a tendency, which some consider unpleasant, to become sticky after many uses and pull your hair as you put it on and take it off.
Of course, whichever type of material you are going to use, you can have it printed with your club name, your own name, or – if the race authorities permit it – you could even have it printed with some advertising from your sponsor. This is always a great idea, especially if you win the triathlon, because there will be film of you receiving your trophy resulting in more publicity for your sponsor as well.

How to Choose the Best Swim Cap
The options are overwhelming. Nonetheless, this does not mean that you can choose just any swim cap.
Via: Amazon.com
From comfort to durability, there are several factors you need to consider.
Below are some factors that will make it easier to narrow down the possibilities.
Material
This is one of the first and most important considerations. It affects the durability of the swim cap, as well as the comfort that it can provide to the user.
Silicone
Most of the products mentioned in our recommendations are made of silicone. It is ideal if you are into open water swimming. This is also recommended for people with long hair.
This material is known for offering optimal protection against chemicals in pool water. It is also easy to put on and off. Silicone is also snag-free.
One problem, however, is that it might easily slip off your head. It is also quite more expensive compared to latex.
Latex
This is the most affordable of all the materials used in swim caps. It is ideal for swimming training and lap practice.
One of the best things about latex is its exceptional hydrodynamic properties. This is effective in maximizing your training.
Latex, however, is thin, this makes it easily prone to wear. This isn’t exactly the best option if you are after durability.
Another common problem with latex is that it can trigger an allergic reaction. It is best to avoid latex swim caps if you have sensitive skin.
Lycra
If you are looking for the most comfortable swim cap, Lycra is the way to go. It is designed for water aerobics and water exercise.
Aside from being the most comfortable, it also has the reputation of being the most durable. After years of use, you can expect it to retain its mint condition.
While it is durable, however, the problem is that this material tends to lose its elasticity quicker compared to other materials.
Neoprene
Neoprene is the same material that is used in wetsuits worn by divers. It is thicker compared to the materials mentioned above.
This is an excellent choice if you are swimming in cold water. The thickness of the material provides insulation to the head. This helps to keep you warm as you swim.
Size and Shape
In most cases, swim caps are available in a single size. It is made of a stretchable material, so it can fit most head sizes and shapes.
Swim caps are often available in three sizes. A small swim cap will fit a head circumference of 20.5 to 21 5/8 inches. On the other hand, the medium is for 22 to 22 3/8 inches. Lastly, large swim caps are for 22 ¾ to 23 1/8 inches.
Intended Use
To help you narrow down the options for the best swim caps, you also have to consider where you will use it. As noted above, this will have an impact on the material that you should pick.
For hardcore or competitive swimmers, the most advanced swim caps are recommended for the reduction of drag. They should also have a snug fit so that they stay in place regardless of the movement.
If you are just swimming casually or recreationally, on the other hand, you are good with cheap materials, such as latex. It does the job most of the time.
It is also crucial to consider the temperature of the water where you will be swimming. For warmer temperatures, a thin cap is advisable to keep you cool. In colder temperatures, choose thicker materials for warmth.
Ease of Use
For the swim cap to be easy to use, it should be effortless to put on and off. This is possible if it is made of a material that is easy to stretch.
It is also important for the swim cap to be snag-free. It can be frustrating to pull it off along with your hair after every swimming session!
Care and Maintenance
Pay attention to the care and maintenance of the swim cap. It should require minimal effort on your end, making it easy to keep it in its best shape through the years.
After every use, you should rinse the swim cap using tap water. Let it dry. Once the cap is dry, add a baby or talcum powder. This will help in the absorption of excess moisture.
Once cleaned, store the swim cap in a cool and dry place. Keep it away from any sources of direct heat. If possible, keep it in a bag to protect against dirt and dust.
Final Verdict
From the five options mentioned above for the best swim caps, which one should you buy?
If you’ll ask us, we’d say that the best choice is the Wigoo Long Hair Swim Cap 2-pack. More than being affordable, it is made of 100% silicone, has ergonomic ear pockets, and thicker than most of its competitors.
Is there any other swim cap that you would like to add to our list? Feel free to write a comment below

Buyer’s Guide
Now that you’ve got 10 awesome shooting gloves to choose from, let’s talk about how to make the right choice for you. Choosing the right shooting gloves depends on a number of factors, but the most important is your intended use.
For example, bow hunters are going to need different shooting gloves than rifle hunters. Military and law enforcement personnel obviously have different requirements than casual hunters. In this Buyer’s Guide, we’re going to go over four questions you should ask yourself when deciding whether or not to purchase a specific pair of shooting gloves.
Are They Going to Hold Up?
Durability is arguably the #1 factor to consider when choosing shooting gloves. You want to make sure that the choice you make is going to last for years to come. If you plan to use your gloves very frequently, they’re obviously going to be subject to a great deal of wear and tear. The first thing to look at when considering durability is the primary material used in the glove’s construction.
You’ll find gloves made of a variety of leathers, synthetic leather, neoprene, polyester, and a host of other materials. Some leather gloves are also coated with a polyurethane finish, which does improve their longevity (in most cases). Others intentionally construct their gloves with thinner material so that they breathe better.
The ideal pair of shooting gloves should be able to withstand tough environments and extreme weather. They should have a thick palm so that the most sensitive part of your hands is protected. And finally, you generally won’t go wrong with shooting gloves made of deerskin leather, neoprene, thermal warm grip, or HPPE (4).
Are They Going to Feel Good?
After you narrow down your list to gloves that you feel are going to last, it’s time to consider whether or not they’re actually going to feel good on your hands. If you’re using them for hunting, you’ll probably be wearing them for at least four or five hours at a time. If your intention is to have them for tactical use, there’s a good chance this timeframe will be a lot longer. So, you’re going to want to choose gloves that are also comfortable.
Now, the primary material that makes a glove comfortable (or not) is the material it’s made of. Thankfully, leather is an incredibly comfortable material and most of the best shooting gloves use either genuine leather or a comfortable synthetic variety.
In addition to making sure that the material your gloves are made of won’t irritate your skin, you also want to ensure that they offer a reasonable degree of breathability. If your hands are always hot and sweaty when you’re wearing your gloves, you’re probably not going to feel too comfortable in them.
Finally, you should avoid shooting gloves that are overly bulky. When you’re lugging around a bunch of other gear on a hunt, backpacking trip, or tactical mission, you don’t want gloves that weigh you down even further. Make sure the gloves you choose are also lightweight so that you’re not exhausted by the time to pick your spot and stop to target your desired game.
Are They Going to Make Life Easier?
Whether you’re hunting or making quick decisions in a tactical situation, timing is everything. The last thing you want to be doing in these scenarios is fidgeting with your shooting gloves. You want them to fit snugly and can be adjusted quickly. If your gloves take more than a minute to put on, every second after that is a second wasted.
You want to look for gloves that are easy to use and require little effort to maintain. Cuffs and straps are great features that help hold your gloves on without requiring a bunch of extra effort to secure them in place. They make your experience getting your gloves on and off hassle-free so that you can concentrate on the important tasks in front of you.
Additionally, you want to make sure the gloves you choose are functional. This means you can perform all the necessary tasks you would normally perform with bare hands. Ideally, your gloves will allow you to perform those tasks as quickly (or more quickly) than you could perform them without gloves. Avoid gloves that cause you to fumble with loading your firearm, picking up shells, pulling the trigger, and performing other actions that need to be done seamlessly.
Are They Going to Fit?
Hand sizes vary greatly from individual to individual. Because of that, you should certainly avoid any shooting gloves that claim to be “one-size-fits-all.” The best shooting gloves come in a variety of sizes and the appropriate sizing chart will help you determine which size is right for you.
Take the time to make sure the gloves you order are going to fit. Gloves that are too small can pinch your hands or cut off circulation, which will affect your performance. Gloves that are too large are likely to slip and slide around, which will also cause unnecessary fumbling and readjusting to try to tighten them down.
Gloves that are too large will also cause your hands to get colder in low temperatures. The additional air space around your hand means more opportunity for cold air to creep in. In these scenarios, it’s also important to pay attention to cuff size. In colder environments, a longer cuff length is helpful because it gives you the ability to tuck your sleeves into the gloves.
When choosing the size of shooting gloves, pay close attention to the recommendations from the specific manufacturer of the glove you’re interested in. Different brands size their gloves differently, and it never hurts to double down on research to make sure you’re getting the right size.
Frequently Asked Questions
Your goal when searching for shooting gloves should be to find a pair that fit comfortably and function for your specific needs. Additionally, it’s important to find a glove that’s going to improve your shooting performance. There’s no sense in adding shooting gloves to your arsenal if they make you a worse shooter!
In this Frequently Asked Questions section, we’re going to address several major concerns about the function, fit, and maintenance of shooting gloves. If you have any additional questions that aren’t addressed here, feel free to leave a comment below!
What is the difference between leather and synthetic leather?
To the naked eye, it can be hard to notice the difference. Advancements in synthetic leathers have made them comparable to their “genuine” counterparts. The important difference is that genuine leather comes from animal hides, such as cattle, deer, buffalo, goat, or oxen. In comparison, synthetic leather is usually made from a plastic base, which is then treated with a substance like polyurethane (wax and dye are often used as well) to create a similar color texture to genuine leather.
Synthetic leather tends to be more cost effective to produce, which can make gloves using them cheaper for the consumer. Some enthusiasts insist that it’s impossible to duplicate the feel and durability of genuine leather using a plastic base. But this is precisely the goal that synthetic leather producers are trying to achieve.
Can you tell me more about the benefits of using neoprene in shooting gloves?
Neoprene is the same material used to make wetsuits. It is a synthetic polymer that resembles rubber. It is resistant to oil, heat, and weathering. These qualities showcase the primary benefits of including neoprene in shooting gloves. In combination with synthetic leather, gloves that use neoprene keep your hands warmer when they get wet and are more resistant to extreme weather.
What is the best way to wash my shooting gloves?
Fortunately, many of the shooting gloves we mentioned above are machine washable. When doing so, you should always be careful to follow the specific washing instructions set forth by the manufacturer on the glove’s label.
If your gloves aren’t machine washable (or you don’t have access to a washing machine), the best way to wash synthetic leather shooting gloves is in the sink. Use cold water and mild laundry detergent or dishwashing soap to thoroughly clean the dirt and debris from your gloves. Avoid bleach or solvents, as they can cause discoloration.
Once you’re satisfied that your gloves are clean, air-dry them to prevent the material from shrinking. This will maintain proper sizing and guarantee a snug fit. Never machine dry with heat or expose your gloves to a heat source other than indirect sunlight.
For gloves made of leather from animal hides, you’ll want to use oil-based saddle soap to clean them. This soap will help you remove exterior stains and restore moisture to the leather. Use as little water as possible with the soap so that it does the majority of the work. If you need a deeper clean, you can use a shoe brush for added elbow grease.
Just like with synthetic leather gloves, avoid using bleach or solvents and air-dry your gloves to maintain sizing and prevent the material from shrinking. Never machine dry with heat or expose leather gloves made from animal hides to a heat source other than indirect sunlight.
Is there a way to add a layer of waterproofing to shooting gloves?
Yes! One of the best products for treating leather gloves is Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather (5). You can apply this wax to clean gloves wet or dry in order to improve their ability to repel water. This product is designed to maintain your glove’s breathability as well. Proper waterproofing can significantly improve the longevity of your shooting gloves.
How can I find my glove size?
The appropriate glove size for your hand will vary depending on the specific manufacturer of the gloves you’re interested in. However, the primary measurements you’ll need to know to find the right glove size are your palm circumference and hand length. Using a measuring tape, wrap around the circumference of your palm between your thumb and forefinger. To find your hand length, measure from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your hand.
When taking hand measurements, always use your dominant hand to determine the right size of gloves. While both measurements are helpful, make sure that you use the larger of the two to make sure you choose the correct size glove (6).
Summary
The right pair of shooting gloves can significantly improve your hunting and/or tactical performance. Perhaps more importantly, they’ll keep your hands comfortable and protected in a variety of harsh environments. We hope you’ve enjoyed this summary of the best shooting gloves of 2019 and we wish you the best of luck in your selection process!

Lululemon Just Launched a Pro-Surfer Approved Swimwear Collection
Living in Toronto, there aren’t a ton of opportunities for me to slip on a wetsuit and catch a wave. And when the opportunity to hop on a surfboard does present itself, I usually opt to watch from the sand with a lukewarm beverage and trashy beach book. Mastering a new water sport can be frightening—especially when you know there’s a video camera nearby, ready to upload your wipeouts to the web.
But, when Lululemon invites you to California to test out their newswimwear line with pro-surfer Malia Manuel, you hop on a plane and head for the ocean. With one of the world’s best female surfer’s nearby, I knew I’d be in good hands: born and raised in Kaua’i, Hawaii, Malia stared tandem surfing when she was just three-year-old. Fast forward a decade, and Malia becomes the youngest surfer ever to win the US Open of Surfing when she is just 14. (I know, right?) Now she’s 24, an elite Lululemon ambassador, and she’s celebrating the launch of a swimwear collection she worked hand-in-hand with a massive brand to design.

She sounds intimidating on paper and she looks intimidating on a wave, but on land, Malia is anything but. Just listening to her speak to her passion for the sport makes you want to hop into the frigid Zuma Beach waves and stand up on a six foot board. I was nervous, but I was ready: wearing my Lululemon x Malia Manuel ‘Will the Wave’ suit, I felt and looked the part. (And I was confident that I wasn’t going to lose a bikini strap or get distracted by a wetsuit wedgie. Balance, bend your knees, feet forward… when you’re learning to surf, you already have enough to focus on.)
After standing on a surf board for apx. five seconds —with the help of some Cali surf instructor dudes, of course—I was feeling pretty good about myself. Then, I watched as Malia paddled out into the water and over the waves with the grace of a practiced ballerina. I made my way to the shore as I watched her glide through Pacific Ocean on her board. She quite literally blew me out of the water.

What exactly is the secret to looking like a free spirited surf goddess? Well, it takes a stellar swimsuit—and a lifetime of practice. In the mean time, these Malia Manuel-approved products can help get you there. Grab a suit and some sunscreen, and you’ll be willing the waves in no time.
