I’m really proud of myself because thanks to the past 6-7 months since my enlistment I’ve come soo far and have accomplished so much physically. Like I️m in better shape now than i was even in high school/college when i was in sports
i went from running 1.5 miles in almost 14 minutes to running that in 11:28 and setting the record for females AND males
from giving up on myself after 2-3 miles to easily running 6+ miles without feeling as fatigued
from wanting to die after only 45 sit ups in 2 minutes to a solid 112 sit ups
from hating push ups and burpees to easily being able to do them for an eternity (which, when someone fucks up and you get individually trained for their mistake, 3-5 mins of burpees feels like a lifetime)
im still only a poolee, not even a recruit till i arrive at Parris Island, and i already have so much to thank the marine corps for

Recruits of Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, marched one step closer to graduation after completing their final drill evaluation Jan. 4, 2017, on Parris Island, S.C. Over the previous 10 weeks, the recruits marched and trained side by side, developing strong bonds and teamwork. The strict, particular nature of close-order drill reinforces discipline and precision and fosters unit cohesion. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Jan. 13, 2017. (Video by Cpl. Vanessa Austin)

People are getting bent out of shape over this Time article and the cover. One of the outrages is towards the Marines posing for the cover. Let's clear that up first. These two are on Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Most likely they are still in boot camp, probably in third phase judging by the hair cuts and rolled sleeves. How do I know they are on MCRDPI you ask. I've been there, I recognize the background and can smell it when looking at these pics. I can guarantee these two had no choice in the matter. A Drill Instructor proclaimed he needed two volunteers. Everyone already learned not to fall for that trick again and studiously studied a blank spot off in the distance so two were chosen at whim and told to report to Senior (the senior DI). Now they are featured on Time for an article about our endless war.
Time has a point. We've been at war since 2001 and it's hard to see the point in being there. That region has been in turmoil for centuries. The most stable time period there was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. Unless we are allowed to wage total and unrestricted warfare we are wasting our time, money and people for nothing. There is seemingly no light at the end of this tunnel.

MCRD Parris Island
01, April 2013.
I was 25 years old when I got a taste for MCRDPI. There is not a day that goes by where I do not forget the scent of the way the buildings smelled. To me, the receiving building smelled like a mixture of Gain laundry detergent and old musk. The squad decks smelled like Aqua Velva and gain. The mindset of the men who train is not for everyone. But their job is effective. they are there to create and train Marines to go to war.
The first 36 hours was the longest of my life. I knew nobody and it was my first time away from my family back home. My time started 24 hours earlier in the MEPS center in Boston, MA.  I and a few others that were shipping out to their training bases were there as well. Not everyone I went down with was heading for the Corps. Some were heading down to Fort Benning in Georgia to join the Army.  Once we all boarded our Delta flight, it felt as if the hatch was closing on our freedom.  I arrived at the rally point around midnight with a few others. We were fed our first official USMC meal which was a sub. I tried to sleep on my way to the island with no luck as I was full of adrenaline. Once we arrived at the Island, we were all instructed to keep our heads down by a female Marine on sentry detail.
We got off the bus and on to the infamous yellow footprints and the journey to the island ended.

Recreating a Living Eagle, Globe, and Anchor
Recreating a Living Eagle, Globe, and Anchor
MCRD Parris Island decided to re-create the living Eagle, Globe, and Anchor from 1919 with modern recruits in celebration of their 100th anniversary. There were lots of comments on Twitter about the event.
How many recruits does it take to make an EGA? Today, @MCRDPI celebrated their centennial by recreating the “Living Eagle, Globe and Anchor” they made 100 years ago. pic.twitter.com/2fhlZf7…

Y’all. I know I don’t post much personally. But I am overwhelmed with emotion right now. My husband leaves on Sunday for MCRDPI. He begins his 13 weeks of boot camp to earn the title of United States Marine. My heart is broken and swelling with love all at the same time. I’m so proud of him, and taking these first steps towards his biggest life goal. But my heart is in pieces knowing I will not see him, hold him, or hear his voice for 13 weeks. I worry. For myself. Four our marriage. For our son. Im a mess. I have no other option that to get through it. But I’m having trouble finding peace. Y’all I just need some prayers and a hug.

Todd Blevins | Jody Nelson Death – Obituary, Funeral, Cause Of Death I graduated my last platoon at MCRDPI on this day 22 years ago. Being a USMC drill instructor (especially a sergeant SDI) was indeed the greatest privilege of my life, next to being a husband and father. Rest In Peace, Todd Blevins and Jody Nelson.
