14 homegrown jewellery labels designing for the contemporary man
In our series spotlighting jewellery labels for men, meet the ones designing for men, those crafting genderless jewels, and labels that the boys can borrow from
ASAP Rocky’s jewellery arsenal is more enviable than Rihannas, Harry Styles’ harmonious stacks are cop-worthy, and Pharell’s neck mess is straight-up covetable. With the boys romancing sparkly bits, jewellery for men is a major talking point right now.
So, it’s no coincidence that jewellery labels are now diversifying their offering to be more inclusive. Jewellery is a means of self-expression and individualism and does not ascribe to any one gender. Take, for instance, Misho – designer Suhani Parekh introduced Misho Man earlier this month after years of creating the occasional piece for men.
Another label blurring the gender boundaries is Eurumme. Founder Eishita Puri created Gendeless Eurumme last year “to smash gender stereotypes.” She expresses that, “the only deciding factor when it comes to dressing oneself should be self-expression. Gender should play no role in it. And there’s no time like the present to glorify freedom of choice, expression, and individuality.”
Eurumme’s campaign propels the concept of genderless jewellery, driving home the point that men can style the same pieces as women. “Pieces from our existing collections have been styled and worn by people across genders,” says Puri. “The point of our campaign was to not typecast jewellery into categories based on who’s wearing it.”
Following suit is Tanzire – yet another homegrown label that recently launched its gender-neutral collection Blurred. With timeless pearls at play, its founder Suhani Batwara believes in “breaking down the societal and political boundaries.” She explains, “With Blurred, we want to eliminate the notion that jewellery is just for women. Today’s millennials understand that jewellery is one of the most personal purchases one can make, and we aim to encourage a positive message around inclusivity, sustainability, and personal style.”
With jewellery for men having a renaissance moment, here are 15 labels that are creating jewellery for the stylish set – gender no bar.
1. Misho Man
Sculptural and architectural, Misho’s jewellery pieces are akin to modern architecture for the body. With a repertoire of strong pieces with personality, Suhani Parekh is now extending her line to men with Misho Man. While the distinctive Misho ‘Zodiac Medallion’ and the ‘Textured Initial’ necklace find their place in the edit, you’ll also find signet rings in varied iterations, including those with tendrils of coloured enamel. Striking Tahitian black pearl pendants replace milky ones, and stones like Lapis Lazuli and Black Onyx are strung together to form bracelets that can define a look.
2. Anu Merton
With treasures that become instant heirlooms, Anu Merton’s whimsical designs are an ode to Indian craftsmanship. Embodying old-world charm for a modern being, Merton aims to make handcrafted jewellery affordable and accessible. The endlessly elegant quartz pendants are perfect for men – pile them in harmonious stacks or string them along your neck singularly. On the top of our wishlist is the clear 'Hamsa Quartz' pendant and the celestial 'Chanda Quartz' pendant. The 'Adrika on Fresh Water Pearl' captures the striking irregularities and the nostalgic quality of pearls – Merton’s jewellery translates to forever pieces.
3. Eurumme
Eurumme’s jewellery doesn’t ascribe to a gender. It is a means to express individualism. Having dropped their Genderfluid edit 2.0 recently, the curation is subtle yet striking – minimal structural rings, exaggerated neckpieces, and unapologetically bold cuffs. With textured gold adding interest to jewellery, their pieces will hold a place of prestige in your jewellery box. Pack a powerful punch with their rings – the ‘Oblong’ ring, 'Parallel Square' ring, and 'Cube' Ring are style perennials that can make a supersized impact when stacked together.
4. Eina Ahluwalia
We feel a special connection with jewellery inscribed with our initials or ones that reflect who we are through the written word. Eina Ahluwalia offers personallised initial and name necklaces that look like they have been carved in molten gold. In English, Devanagari, and Arabic, you can choose to wear your name loud and proud, or choose from her other pendants that read Ma, Faith, Desire, and Love. We are gravitating towards the 'All Seeing Eye' necklace – it’s a beautifully crafted everyday piece perfect for men who like to keep it simple.
5. Legend Amrapali
Creating talismanic treasures, Legend Amrapali specialises in timeless fine jewellery that combines elements of ancient and modern. Their Heritage and Enamel collections are a true testament to that – sacred symbols are rendered in contemporary enamel and textured gold, with the occasional diamond for sparkle. Men can borrow the 'Ruby Round' pendant and the 'Hamsa Diamond' pendant. The standout accessory for us is the 'Hamsa Enameled' pendant – you’ll never tire of these investment pieces.
6. Tanzire
Who says that Grandma’s pearls cannot be passed down to the boys? If you haven’t inherited any, then Tanzire’s latest drop crafted using glossy pearls can become instant heirlooms. The 'Baroque Pearl Rope Chain' necklace crafted with freshwater pearls and the 'Beaded Pearl Choker' necklace are timeless classics. If you’re angling for discreet, look no further than the 'Statement Pearl Chain' bracelet and the 'Pearl Spiral' ring. These offer a contemporary take on traditional pearls.
7. RAF
With an understated yet luxe appeal, RAF specialises in dainty earrings, sleek lariats, and stackable rings. Crafted in solid gold and conflict-free diamonds, their jewellery is accessible and easy to wear. On the top of our wish list for the men is the 'Diamond Evil Eye' necklace – a prevailing motif for 2021. The 'Diamond Horn' earring comes a close second – perfect when you want to sparkle but keep it on the DL. Their sleek and dainty charms are covetable – layer these with a sense of abandon.
8. STAC
Personalised jewels are STAC’s key identifier. With pendants that bear initials – Devanagari script included, ones engraved with zodiac signs and shaped as constellations, you can string one or many of them for a stack-happy neck mess or let them dangle around your wrist. Their evil-eye family is an extensive one – with iced-out charms, earrings, and rings, this is for those of you who seek sparkle. Much like their name, their pieces are the perfect stack staples.
9. Zohra
While their options for men may be far and few, the ones that men can co-opt are solid and covetable buys. Their latest collection, Indus, takes inspiration from the statues and seals of the Indus civilization, turning them into unique pieces like the ‘Zebu’ necklace, ‘Rudra’ necklace, and the ‘Priest King’ necklace, all of which are hand-etched in textured gold. Add a personal stamp to your look with these.
10. Lunaya
Punctuated by lively gemstones and brightly coloured enamel detailing, Lunaya’s fine and demi-fine pieces reinvent classics with a sliver of colour. Their jewellery features a sprinkling of sapphires, diamonds, and drops of rose quartz and Turquoise. Look no further than the 'Hexa Blue Sapphire Charm' and the 'Malachite Gemstone Amulet' – their delicacy allows you to layer endlessly, including two charms in one chain to add bonus variation to your stack. If you gravitate towards rings, their 'Eyes On Me’ signet ring and the colour-blocked 'Baguette' rings in varied colourways are a must-have.
11. Soraya
Clean lines and simple shapes sum up the minimal pieces by Soraya. The designs are remarkably versatile – wear them singularly, layer them up, or mix-and-match them. We’re placing our money on the 'Face' necklace, the 'Imprinted Stone' necklace, and the 'Drop' pendant – these barely-there everyday staples are low-key but have the ability to invigorate your outfit.
12. Mirayah
Stay golden with Mirayah’s gold handcrafted trinkets that are informed by geometry and shapes to create pared-down designs that can be personalised for your individual style. With a small but solid edit, men can opt for the 'Link’ chain and the 'Double Layered’ chain – these are the hero pieces we want to hype.
13. Aarka
A touch of gold for men with an easy-going style – Aarka’s gold-plated pieces are fail-safe. From delicate chains that can be worn in tiered layers to the chunky linked chain – 'Arjun' – specially designed for the Aarka Man, their embossed 'Neptunia' chain inspired by sea-god Poseidon and the double-layered 'Luna' chain are the standout pieces.
14. Méro
In a sea of gold and pearls, Méro celebrates pure silver jewellery with a traditional lilt. From those that will appeal to minimalists to ones exaggerated pieces, their minimalist edit is one for men to peruse. Their ‘Men’s Silver Chain’ is specially crafted to suit men, their Evil Eye pendants in its many variations spark joy, and the Miniature Elephant Ring will become a repeatable staple.
