After two nights of staying in a gîte-d'etappe (which we absolutely needed, certainly the first night) it's all kinds of delightful to be back in a tent, with the birds and the view (thank you msr for designing the hubba hubba)

I'm not quite yet at the point of holiday where I start to have lots of new year's resolutions. But we're getting up early tomorrow to go for a walk, so that kind of counts

5. Wilpena Pound to Red Range Camp

I left this morning at 0720, with a stunning walk through the gorge, in to the Pound and on to Bridal Gap. The weather was perfect and this is a beautiful walk - it was an easy walk and one of the most beautiful parts so far.

Then it all went downhill - literally and figuratively. The step off in to the void at Bridal Gap is sudden and steep, compensated for by the stunning views of the Flinders Ranges, and the knowledge that north bound walkers would have to climb up this section - a much harder task. The climb down was very steep, very technical and very slow - a real test of agility, strength and resolve. Thanks to my hiking poles I only had a few slips and falls.

The trail stayed challenging for the next 20 km, with difficult ground, navigation challenges and very rough riverbed walking. The trail markers in this section are older and sparse, so the map and FarOut app became very important. Much of this walking is through the very spectacular Akabar Station, and I am determined to return with Antoinette.

I arrived at Red Range Camp quite late and it is a great site - water, toilet, good tent sites and a well equipped campfire. It's a camp site worth arriving early at so you can enjoy it's location and facilities, however by this stage it was getting dark and I was exhausted, so it was a clean up, tent up, meal and bed. I slept really well (11 hours!) and woke refreshed and ready for more.

The weather remains perfect and my gear is all great - especially my MSR Hubba Hubba 2 tent.

我愣愣地坐著，看著頭燈投影在帳篷裡自己的影子，這一天的二十五公里又要開始了。

長程徒步是以動輒幾十天、距離以幾百公里、爬升陡降以好幾百個一○一疊加起來計算。從A點到B點的線性移動，我在出發前原以為這會是一個極為浪漫的旅程，把家背在身上，把時間過在腳上，從步伐裡踏出每一天。

真的到了步道，我好累，真的好累。走了一整天，大家放下背包後總是親暱地挨著肩坐，揉揉雙腿換上涼鞋，互相倒杯水抱怨剛剛越過的那顆磨人山頭。我卻是憋著氣馬上把背包翻開，拉出帳篷，忙不迭地自己一個人搭起帳來。蹲下來目測營地的水平度，整地撿拾石塊樹枝，確認日落角度，算好隔天太陽升起的方向。非得要搭起帳、鋪好睡袋後，才讓自己喘第一口氣。

就寢前，在帳篷裡就著頭燈，確認今天行進的距離、速度，以目標的遠近來計算明天的爬升、可能的營地與日落時間。一一清點早中晚餐的分配、存糧的份量、凍壞的濾水器怎麼修理、相機記憶卡的照片要轉到手機備份，還有右腳大拇指那個莫名的水泡。這樣那樣，一天結束又一天開始，把家拆掉又把家搭起來。我躺下來，聞著超過十幾天沒有洗頭的頭皮味，我正在想。

我為什麼在這裡？我在做什麼？

我以為把帳篷背在身上，就能得到安定與歸屬；透過長途徒步，就能明白自己的恐懼與遲疑。我原以為隨著日出與日落，隨著月圓月缺，便能知道生命為什麼給我這樣的課題，或為什麼人生總是這麼難，但其實，即便走到這裡，我的恐懼仍交織著遲疑，神諭與天啟並沒有壓倒性地出現。什麼是想要？什麼是需要？誰被誰選擇？我是否只是個選項？步道並沒有透過星星告訴我答案。

今天醒來，我愣愣地坐著，看著頭燈投影在帳篷裡自己的影子。

也許啊，我不能得到什麼噢。我突然這樣想，也許走完了約翰．繆爾步道這三百四十公里，我還是原來的我，既沒有什麼體悟，也沒有方向，不明白的還是不明白，我可能仍然只是其中一個選項。那也沒有關係，太陽等等就會從這個角度升起來，日落前我仍然要把帳篷搭起來。

在這條步道上，我跟我自己走在一起，我就是我自己的家。我已經有能力面對我的不安就只是那不安，我的牽掛就只是那牽掛，那不是我。

我想，這就是為什麼我要在這裡。

BOMBTRACKを愛用するバイクガイドが行く、チェンマイ〜ヴィエンチャンのバイクパッキング旅

こんにちは、スタッフの由谷です。

上の映像は、僕の友人が1月末から2月頭にかけて出かけてきたタイ〜ライオスへのバイクパッキングの様子を収めたものです。

幾度か前振りがあったとはいえ、ある日唐突にルートが送られてきて、それも10日間ほどのバイクパッキング旅の提案。

僕自身もワンデイ・ライドであれば唐突に提案することがあります。でも、数日間の旅となると考えることができてしまう．．．仕事のこと、家族のこと、道具のことなどなど、色々とあります。

サッと返事ができずにいた僕は2日後に足首を捻挫し、旅に参加できない身体的理由ができてしまい悶々としていると、誘い主の友人は一週間後に意気揚々と東南アジアへと出発していったのです。

その友人とは、富士山麓でバイクガイドを生業にするライドマニアであり、山行にも精通したアウトドアマン「Mitt氏」。

ARISE 2、HOOK EXT、BEYOND PLUSの3台を、ライドのスタイルで使い分けるBOMBTRACK愛好家です。

ハッピースマイルなMitt氏が運営するALOHA BIKE TRIPでは、オンロードライド、MTBのトレイルライド、さらにパニアバッグを装備したツアーライドなど、富士山周辺の自然を活かした多様なバイクアクティビティをガイドしてくれます。

3月から12月までのガイドシーズンを終えてオフシーズンになる冬期は、暖かい地域へ出かけたくなりワクワクするというMitt氏。以前には、ボルネオへ、オランダからドイツへ、一昨年にはアメリカ西海岸へ、昨年はベトナムへと、その時の直感に従い自転車での旅を計画するようにしているそうです。

バイクガイドを行っていると、国内はもちろんのこと外国からのお客さんをアテンドする機会も多いと聞きます。

あるとき、善行から悪行まで書ききれないほどユニークな逸話を話すタイからのスーパーセレブなメンバーと意気投合。

「タイでサイクリングは何処が良いんだ？」と聞くと、

口を揃えて「チェンマイ!」と言い、

「タイランドの格言で、いくら金持ちでも死んでしまえばお金を天国まで持っていけない。貧しい人達へ生きてるうちに還元しろ。」

「それがタイの人達の心であり、歌でもそう言う事を歌ってるのがタイ人に好まれるんだ。」

と話す姿が心に響き、今回の旅の目的地のひとつであるタイのチェンマイ行を決めます。

地続きで越境することに魅力を感じてたこともあり、隣国のラオスが目に留まり、空のあるヴィエンチャンまで、距離611.5km / 累積標高8,996mのバイクパッキングを計画。

Google Mapでリサーチし、Ride with GPSを利用して山間部や川沿いを選んで引かれた今回のルート。

農村部では主要道路であってもダート道であることが多く、交通が頻繁で斜度のある道では脇を押して歩くこともあったそうですが、山間部では、笑ってしまうほどの急勾配が所々あるものの気持ちの良いワインディングを楽しめたようです。

そして、ヤシの木やバナナなどの南国らしい木々が生い茂り、犬猫に鶏やうずら、豚や牛までもが放し飼いにされ、自由な動物たちと人工物のない景色が永遠と続く印象的な時間を過ごすことに。

タイの国民は、その95％が仏教徒と言われているそうで、立ち寄った寺院も立派。接する人々は穏やかで旅人へ温かく、同じアジア人として心が蘇った気持ちになったそうです。

タイのチェンマイ市内の道は整備されていて車やバイクの運転が穏やかな印象だったものの、ラオスのヴィエンチャンでは道も運転も荒いようで、油断できなかったとのこと。

隣り合うタイとラオスは文化も似た印象を持っていましたが、タイの方がより穏やかだったそうです。気候についても、タイは穏やかでグリーンなイメージで、ラオス(ヴィエンチャン)の方が灼熱感を感じたようです。

東南アジア最大のメコン川を挟み向かい合うタイとラオスの両国ですが、地続きで互いに見える距離にあるとはいえ、気候や資源など少しずつ異なる環境によって文化にも違いが出ていることに驚きを感じたとのこと。

この旅のルートは、人里離れた山間部や農村部を通ることが多く、宿のないエリアに備えてテント泊の装備を持参。

テント(MSR Hubba NX)はもちろん持参。暑いと思い、シュラフカバー(GORE)とマット(Therm-a-Rest)で寝ていたようですが、それが失敗。

東南アジアとはいえ、山間部の気温は10℃くらいになるので肌寒く、せめてコンパクトな夏用のシュラフ本体(羽毛200〜300g)を持っていけば良かったと後悔が残ったようです。

今回は、暖かい気候の中でサイクリングがメインの旅。自転車上で動きやすいサイクリングジャージの上下をメインに、速乾性のTシャツにストレッチショーツとインナーパンツを持参したとのこと。

よりカジュアルな服装も持参したかったところですが、荷物を極力少なくしたかったので、自転車に乗りやすい裁断で体が動かしやく速乾性にも優れたサイクリングジャージをメインに。

ライド時には大量に汗をかき頭から爪先まで砂だらけになることがあったり、一日の走行距離が100kmを超えることもあったため、結果的にサイクリングジャージをメインとしたことは正解だったようです。

しかし、今回のように暖かい環境でしっかりと走る旅であっても、カジュアルさも併せ持つ中間的なウェアがあれば、オフの活動も気兼ねなく行えるのでより良かったのではと思ったようです。

さて、今回の旅のテント泊について、少々困ったことが2つあったそうです。

ひとつは野焼きの影響。

山間部ではテントを張れそうなところがたくさんあったものの、暗くなるとあちこちで燃えているのが見えるほど野焼きが行われていて、焦げ臭かったようです。

安全なポイントを求め、ヘッドライトを点灯してさまよっていると大きな建物を発見。テントを張らせてもらおうと声を掛けると、ふもとから８km先の山頂にあるキャンプ場まで車で送ってもらえることに。

一日中走り回りクタクタになった身体で、さらに8kmの急なヒルクライムは無理。とても助かったそうです。

もうひとつは入国審査。

タイからラオスへの入国時、入国管理局に宿泊先を聞かれ

「キャンプ」と答えると

「ノー」と言われ、上官が登場。

「キャンプは危ないからダメ。ゲストハウスの利用を約束するなら入国させる。」

何が危ないのか気になりつつ面倒臭さもあり、それを快諾し無事にラオスへの入国を果たしたそうです。

前述のとおり、BOMBTRACK愛好家のMitt氏が今回の旅の相棒として選んだバイクは、ARISE 2でした。
