Eurovision 2004 - Number 19 - Toše Proeski - "Далеку од мене"
youtube
It's time for Macedonia's tragic hero. Toše Proeski was a very big deal. Across the whole of the Balkans, his name and his voice were household names. A child star, since the beginning of the 21st century his reputation had been growing to major proportions and his performances were huge. He even had a superhero comic book character named for him. Super Toše fought evil to the delight of Balkan comic fans.
He should have been at the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest. He won Beovision to represent Serbia and Montenegro, however owing to the massive number of entries that forced the EBU to finally start holding semi-finals, Serbia and Toše had to wait another year.
In 2004, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were also back (having been relegated in 2003), so fate allowed Toše to represent his native country. Given his status, Skopjefest made way for a song selection final in which he would sing all eight songs. It's a strong final - many of the songs are worthy.
Далеку од мене (Daleku od mene/Far Away from Me) is by Ognen Nedelkovski and Sanel Suljanović. Of these two, Ognen has the biggest history with both Macedonian Eurovision potentials as well as Toše himself. He wrote Солзи прават златен прстен (Solzi pravat zlaten prsten/Tears are Making a Golden Ring) which finished 3rd for Toše at Skopjefest in 2000. He'd go on to write many songs for Macedonian selection finals over the next ten years.
The song itself is a driving EDM power-ballad that's all about Toše's voice showing just what it can do. It starts off with big drum hits, and squelchy synth bass races off daring him to keep up. This is full-on, high power singing with barely room to breathe. He's missing his love so much that the mountain tops will know by the end of the song. There's even room for a big held note that carries on through the key change in the bridge. That's just showing off. Listen to that crowd at the end.
It nearly became Macedonia's song for the year - just missing out and ending up the runner up. The winner was far and away the favourite, but this was clear in second place too. In the end of course, Toše did get to Eurovision with the winning song.
Just three short years after this competition, he was dead. His fame had only increased, with massive concerts in Skopje at one of which the huge crowd refused to leave. He gave the profits from his last concert to USAID. He died in a road accident just eleven days after that last concert. Macedonia held a national day of mourning, gave him a state funeral and named Skopje's major stadium after him. Toše was huge and only ever shining more brightly when he tragically taken from the country and people who loved him.

Vlado Taneski was a Macedonian journalist and serial killer. He was arrested in June 2008 in Kičevo, his hometown, for the murders of two women on whose deaths he had also written freelance articles.
When arrested he was also being investigated over the death of an additional woman. These articles had aroused the suspicion of the police as they contained information which had not been released to the public.
After DNA tests connected Taneski to the murders, he was arrested and imprisoned on June 22, 2008. Taneski was found dead in his cell the following day, after an apparent suicide.

"We were all shocked. He was a very quiet person and would never do something like this," said friends and colleagues who did not believe he was a killer. Taneski's wife said that in their 31 years of marriage, the only time she saw her husband become aggressive was when they lived with his parents.
Taneski's victims were:
Mitra Simjanoska (64) – disappeared November 16, 2004 after a trip to the market; found January 12, 2005. She had been strangled, bound, tortured, and raped, and had been dead for less than two weeks.
Ljubica Licoska (56) – disappeared in early November 2007 after going to buy groceries; found on February 3, 2008. She had been strangled, bound, beaten, and raped, and had been dead for only a few days.
Zivana Temelkoska (65) – disappeared on May 7, 2008, after a hoax about her son being hospitalised; found on May 16. She had been tortured, raped, strangled, and was bound with telephone cords.
All these women were poor, uneducated cleaners, which was also how Taneski's mother had earned a living. The victims had known Taneski's mother personally, which may have been the reason for their selection as victims.
When the three bodies were discovered, Taneski's obsessively detailed investigations raised the police's suspicions. "The body was tied with a length of telephone cable. The woman had apparently been strangled," one of the articles read. But in fact, the police never disclosed how the victims had been murdered.
Taneski revealed information that no one else could know except the perpetrator: how the women were killed, what kind of materials they were buried with... "Taneski knew a lot because he was the killer," police alleged.

Speaking of Eurovision...
As a fellow ESC watcher I would like to ask what your twelve all-time favourite ESC songs are and maybe explain why exactly these if you don't mind •////• 👉👈
And have a nice day~
Oh damn just 12? Thats too difficult 😭 If you don't mind instead I decided to pick a country and then select one of their best songs ♥️
Helena Papariziou - my number one (Greece 2005). Maybe it's just nostalgia, but to me this is Eurovision-est eurovision song that ever won. Fast rhythm, very Greek vibes, catchy tune, nice choreography and voice, what's not to like?
Hari Mara Hari - Lejla (BiH 2006). What to say, beautiful ballad in native language, very powerful voice, in my honest opinion this song should have won back in 2006. But then again, I'm a fan of his music so maybe I'm just biased
Go_A - Shum (Ukraine 2021). What every country should do: send a mix of folklore and modern music in native language. Honestly if I had to choose a country that overal has best entries without a doubt it'll be Ukraine, they never disappoint. What's hard to choose actually is which song of theirs was the best. I can't decide but Go_A's Šum definitely goes into top 3. Also in begging everyone listen to Shady Lady, their 2008's entry
Conchira Wurst - Rise like a Phoenix (Austria 2014). Hands down one of best ballads in English sent in last 20 years. Definitely a deserved win, no matter what public at that time said cuz of her appearance. The 'but I'm gonna fly' part never fails to give me goosebumps. I feel like that song could be trans anthem
Elena Born and Stig Rästa - Goodbye to Yesterday (Estonia 2015). The classic. Very simple yet striking duet, idk how to describe it but there's something rly captivating about the song. Ans they look like they're so in love 🥺
Can Bonomo - Love me back (Turkey 2012). Add to endless list of songs that should have won over Euphoria 🙄 it's a very unique song, very catchy too. Also this is the last year Turkey took part in esc :< I miss their performances 😭
Željko Joksimović - Lane Moje and No name - Zauvjek Moja (Serbia & Montenegro 2004 and 2005) - I tried to choose only one but couldn't ;-; that's how 00s music on Balkan was like, it fills me with nostalgia. Sadly national song content in 2006 was one of reasons why union between two countries collapsed so it's more of pensive nostalgia for people here
Anxhela Peristeri - Karma (Albania 2021). This song was criminally underrated 2 years ago :< powerful ballad, perfect voice, strong tune - idk why she didn't rank higher? Albania always sends good song in their language and gets little points, it's unfair :/
Charlotte Perrilli - Hero (Sweden 2008). Yes I can't believe I'm saying this but there is an underrated swedish entry. I've hear this one back in 2008 and it stick with me ever since. Catchy 00s pop song
Andromache - Ela (Cyprus 2022). This one didn't even qualify ;-; honestly it was one of my faves from last year but it was so obvious she was nervous on stage. Plus song isn't really much of Eurovision material so I sort of understand why she didn't qualify but I adored the song nonetheless 🥰 love hearing Greek language
Dima Bilan - Never let you go (Russia 2006). His voice 🥺 song is so beautiful idk what to say really beside I'm an absolute fan (plus that imma go dig up more of his music). I do like Believe from 2008 too but prefer this song
Paula Seling & Ovi - Playing with fire (Romania 2006). What to say, very catchy song, I like it alot. Love them 90s vibes. Defo one of best Romania sent in last 20 years
Toše Proeski - Life (Macedonia 2004). Alright, I feel like I've bored life out of everyone with Crno i Belo from 2012 so time to bring another underappreciated Macedonian entry. You don't understand, this man was a legend in ex Yu countries 🥺💔 still is to this day
Cascada - Glorious (Germany 2013). Shes one of my fave 00s pop icons, imagine my delight when I heard she's on eurovision 😭 her songs are my childhood ♥️ I just wish she ranked better, idk why only 22th place for such amazing song
Doris Dragović - Marija Magdalena (Croatia 1999). Absolutely best Croatia ever sent, powerful voice, catchy tune, native language - absolutely perfect song in all terms
Alexander Rybak - Fairytale (Norway 2009). One of rare winners I 100% agree with. Violin is amazing there as well as his voice. Breath of fresh air into song context with mixture of traditional and modern I'd say
Monika Liu - Sentimentai (Lithuania 2022). So underappreciated 😭 the style, the elegance, the simplicity, the catchy tune - idk why she didn't get more points tbh
Sirusho - Qele qele (Armenia 2008). As someo3n said in comments - everyone over 18 on Balkan knows this song and that's the case with me too 😂 ethnic flavor, catchy rhymes, one of that years faves for sure
I think I covered around 13-14 counties here, especially some from eastern and central Europe that might get underappreciated. Maybe one day when/if I have time I could choose my fave song from all 50ish European countries (if I'm insane enough)

Bio-warfare in contemporary times - what are the possibilities
By: @Ace of Spades The term bio weapon has been around since quite long time, with it's ancient mention in text that is 1500–1200 BC years old; mentioning intent of driving diseased person to the enemy land to cause infections and catastrophe. Recorded occurred incidents dates back to 400 BC, when schythian archers dipped their arrows in infected feces and decaying corpses before raining them on enemies. Romans used to contaminate their swords with dead animal internals before going to war, increasing the chances of infection in wounded enemies. Venomous snakes were tossed in to enemy ships in second Macedonian war during 190 B.C. [1] The siege of port city Feodosia previously known as city of Kaffa is a well cited example by historians where bio weapon was used and brought black death plaque to mediterranean which swept Europe, Near East and North Africa in the midst of 14th century and was the greatest public health disaster in recorded history. During the siege of city of Kaffa, the Mongols threw the infected corpses inside the walled city via catapults. As a result, plaque spread in the city causing mass deaths, lots flew and brought the plague to Mediterranean and Italy. This claim however is contested by researchers as they believe that probably the plaque reached Europe via merchant ships with infected rodents. [2] In recent times during 18th century British army officers gave smallpox infected blankets to native Americans with intent to infect the population with it. Japanese army threw plague infested fleas via bomb to the Chinese city of Ningbo, which resulted in almost death of 400000 people. Such examples are seen through out afterwards with Britishers weaponizing plague, brucellosis, tularemia, equine encephalomyelitis and vaccinia viruses. US weaponizing anthrax, tularemia, brucellosis, Q-fever etc. These programs, however, were later terminated and treaties were signed under UN to ban the production and use bio-weapons, however research has been continuing ever since for prevention and weapon development as a "defensive tool". [1,3] Where we are today Till the end of 20th century numbers of countries such as U.S, U.K, Russia etc, conducted experiments on unsuspecting general population to see the effects and aftermath in case of an event caused by bio-pathological attack. Until 1990s the warfare capabilities were limited to naturally occurring pathogens. However, with recent advances in gene editing and more knowledge in to genome therapy over few decades have changed the ball game all-together by increasing the chance of potential threats and possibilities exponentially. In 1997 a novel by Richard Perton “The Cobra Event” was published. Story revolved around a fictional scenario in which bio-terrorism was done via genetically engineered super-virus. President Clinton of US during that time after reading the novel got sensitized towards such scenario and issued two Presidential Decision Directives to address national security deficiencies related to biological and chemical warfare. [4,5] Same year, in 1997, group of scientist called JASON group gathered to discuss the potential bio-warfare hazards and grouped potential genetically engineered pathogens in to six groups. [4,5] • Binary biological weapons Like conventional chemical mixing methodology, two different pathogens can be mixed and engineered before deployment of such weapon. Some bacteria which otherwise are harmless but when injected with disease causing plasmids, which is a disease causing genetic information, can induce disease in targeted population. • Designer genes Human’s genome has already been sequenced and so of hundreds of bacteria, viruses and multiple pathogens. With advances in the gene editing technologies it’s possible to make gene edited pathogens. Making new strains or antibiotic and antiviral resistant bacteria and viruses. Or make a completely new virus and pathogen with hybrid of attributes of multiple pathogen naturally present. • Gene therapy as a weapon Gene therapy is already being rolled out systematically for the cure of genetic disorders. However, the same principal can be used to edit human genes to insert a viral strains, which can inhibit certain genes in human cells. This can be linked to suppressing cells defense mechanisms or to disrupt vital cellular functions causing cell death. This can be achieved by using artificially created retro virus, which can inject the artificial genome into the host cell and becomes part of host DNA. • Stealth viruses Such viruses can enter human body and stay dormant for years, later can become expressive after exposure to a certain stimulus, this type of virus can be used for selective bio-warfare, in which a certain population can be exposed to a certain stimulus, which activates the expression of the viral genome. • Host-swapping diseases Naturally occurring viruses rarely jumps hosts, however, a certain virus which naturally infect an animal can be made genetically susceptible to infect humans. • Designer diseases Using all the above methodology a pathogen can be created to artificially construct a disease which can have certain symptoms, e.g. pneumonia, immuno-supression, muscle pain and even cancer. I would like to add another methodology which have became a potential area for bio-warfare is ethnicity based bioweapons. [6] Genetic material has been collected systematically of different ethnic groups by governments and with recent spike in commercial companies like 23x and me which collect genetic information of different countries and ethnicities and have the policy to use or share the collected data for research purposes has tremendously increased the chances of the data to be used by military organizations. Different ethnicities can be susceptible to a certain diseases more than the other based on their unique genetic composition. If a pathogen has to be created that can effect a certain group of people or ethnicity more than the rest, can cause selective ethnic based catastrophe. In 2017 Russia accused US of collection of DNA samples of russians “systematically and professionally”. There are certain groups who are resistant to certain diseases and if a super-pathogen has to be created that can bypass or suppress those genes that cause the natural resistance; such population can become vulnerable after an attack by such virus. With recent calamity caused by covid-19 lots of questions are being asked, if it is synthetically created virus that got leaked or it’s being used as a bio-weapon by some country. Short answer is that we don't know, however, history is full of such examples where countries have repeatedly done such acts to gain political, geo-strategical, military or economic benefits. Regardless of this current pandemic, there is a big chance that such catastrophe can be inflicted by some individuals/ governments for their material gain. And for that we need to prepare and make defenses around such strategy by conducting research in such likely scenarios and how to counter them effectively in case of such heinous event. References 1. Hints
Slaughter With Your Cavalry/Break A Siege
If you are besieged, always attack on the turn you are besieged because the enemy will have no siege equipment to use. If the enemy has artillery, you should try to get rid of it as soon as possible (to see how to attack when besieged, look in the manual under ‘sallying forth’).When you attack the enemy, USE YOUR CALVARY!!! Calvary can slaughter! even against phalanx formations, it is simple: flank from behind. If the phalanx turns toward you, split your calvary in half(if you have more than one calvary group) and make one a diversion team. a phalanx can’t point in two directions. If you have Praetorian or Legionary Calvary (only available after the Gaius Marius Event), use them, they are the best calvary Roman money can buy. Use them instead of your general to protect him, he is very valuable.
How To Fight With Phalanxes
When you are the Macedonians, Greeks Cites, or anyone with phalanxes always fight with them in Phalanx formation otherwise they are useless, but they march really slow when they do. So take them out of the formation and have them run until they are just about to attack then stop them and put them in Phalanx again. I know this may seem like a lot of work for nothing, but it mkaes them very useful in a fight and you can also turn to face a threat to your Phalanx more quickly this way as well.

Eurovision 2004 - Number 10 - Toše Proeski - "Ангели си ти"/"Life"
youtube
Toše is back, this time with the song that won the 2004 Macedonian selection and went to Eurovision.
Ангели си ти (Angeli si ti/You're an Angel) is the original name for a song that walked the national final, winning the jury, the televote and in a one-off (and I love this) Toše himself picked it as his favourite. His opinion made up a third of the result. If you're going to have a song selection final, this feels like an honest way to go about it. The artist you've selected has to have their judgement respected.
For Eurovision it was deemed necessary for an English version to be produced, and it was. Except the English lyrics bear almost no relation at all to the Macedonian original. The Macedonian version is a hymn of devotion to a loved one. It's a deeply felt song filled with heartfelt attachment and undertakings to do absolutely anything for the person held in affection. There's a sense that the connection may be slipping or this person may even be an opportunity that has not been grasped. That sense is the launchpad for the English version.
youtube
Life is about seizing the moment, a carpe diem of a song with some odd choreography involving black-clad dancers holding back the fully white-clad Toše, who is desperate to break free. He needs to grab and hold onto his own path through life rather than follow someone else's. No mention of love. No mention of angel's worthy of his full and eternal attention.
It's still a great song, although perhaps lacking something of the purity of the original. It still was enough to get through the first ever Eurovision semi-final. Just. Toše demonstrated his credentials by qualifying his country for the grand final when twelve others didn't make it.
In the final he finished fourteenth with 47 points, perhaps eclipsed by the song that followed him in the running order from neighbours and national name disputers Greece. This was Macedonia's best ever finish at Eurovision as an independent nation to this point. This was his platform to launch an already big musical career to the superstardom level. Toše may not be mentioned in the same breath as Abba, Celine Dion and Måneskin, but at the time of his death, he was getting there. He was huge not on only in Macedonia but across the Balkans. I've linked his final concert below - he died eleven days after this. He is greatly missed.
