       ❝ oh, i haven’t let people decide things for me in a very long time. ❞ clara makes her own decisions. she makes other people’s too, sometimes, but that’s a fault she’s aware of, even if she doesn’t know how to loosen the reins and be a little less controlling. ( some people — namely the doctor — need someone to tell them when they’re being an absolute arse, don’t they? anyway, he likes clara being in charge. she can read him like any book on her shelf. ) but life has a way of pushing people in certain directions, anyway. it has a way of making decisions, and even clara, stubborn as she might be, can’t fight against the universe. she’s usually too busy fighting to save it.

        but she is not what this conversation is about, not really. she looks at ella, and clara can see how changed she is. how much more confident. and it’s good, isn’t it? clara had absolutely nothing to do with it — ella always had this inside, and her strength is entirely her own — but she’s glad she’s got to witness it, all the same.  ❝ you, though. seems to me like you’ve chosen who you wanna be. if you ask me, she’s pretty great. ❞

the past few weeks, in the absence of absolutely anything else to do, regina found herself rather interested in the rumor mill of the monarchs. normally, the queen would never partake in what she would call a senseless waste of time. however, there had been talks of a prince, recently married to what appeared to be a scullery maid. though she would never go so far as to join the gossip, it made parties quite interesting. it was not until she had come face to face with the woman that it ever occurred to her how misleading such speech was.

her majesty was well trained in the art of concealing her thoughts, her face offering an easy smile, but confusion lingering just beneath.   ‘   welcome.   ’   her happiness does not quite reach her eyes, but it hadn’t for quite a while. still, her voice carried all the warmth needed to compensate.   ‘   it is so lovely to finally meet you ! i’m regina.   ’   \   @madepossible .

     a hand reaches up, scratches at the back of his head in thought. it takes a minute: he came off of a SHIELD op two days ago, and he downed an MRE bar on the transport back. where has he been since then? writing reports, spending an hour or two in the range, and trying to come down from an op in the hours he was even awake. most of it has been spent unconscious, sleeping off bruised ribs and an aching neck. 

   “forty eight hours? give or take a couple in there.”

    that may be so, but ella does not, could not possibly, understand the gravity of the boulders of truth being withheld. it’s better some secrets remain. safer that she does not know the origins of the museum, nor the ancient relics she keeps safe from those that are seeking to harness the active power they wield. the clandestine agency its curator is a member of must remain unknown, even from those outside of shield she respects most. “ it’s not that I don’t trust you. it’s just that some things...” it’s so cliche, isn’t it? what she’s about to say? “some things are better left unknown. i’ve learned that the hard way. I don’t want you to have to, too.”

              “  I CAN ONLY HOPE SO,  ELLA.  ”      truth be told,   belle has far less faith in herself than her friend.  the forest is cold in the night,   sticking the thick tears to her cheeks.   these trees have memories,   faint reels of wolf attacks and horses,  carriages and blood.   she has to grit her teeth to keep from collapsing into the ashen snow.   there would be time to mourn the past if and when they ensured a future.   she takes ella’s hand in hers.   the girl is the only love belle has left.  france has grown strange and awful behind her,   but she has come too far to turn back now.     

                “  there is a path behind the ledge up ahead,  it leads to belgium if my memory serves.  ”     she’d spent enough time pouring over the dusty maps in the library.  that had to count for something.    “  can you climb ? ”

        perhaps this isn’t nate’s favourite time of year, but he’s been doing his best not to be the grinch, because it’s clearly ella’s, and if anything can get him into the christmas spirit, it’s seeing his fiancée filled with all the joy of a hallmark movie and more, the way that it overflows and touches everyone that she meets. even him. decorating the house was pretty fun---especially the mistletoe. it’d take a stronger man than him to complain about the strategic places it’s been put, for maximum opportunity --- like here, for instance, over the doorframe he’s leaning against, waiting to pounce on her.

       ❝ i don’t blame you. actually, i think you’re really brave. ❞ isn’t she? clara loves being here, she feels like they’re doing something good—but she and the doctor are going to leave, and they’ll probably never come back. and that’s how it is everywhere they go, with everything they do. it takes bravery to face danger, clara’s been in near-death situations more times than she can count, she’s faced the most terrifying creatures a person can imagine, but she doesn’t think that comes anything close to the bravery of an ordinary person just trying to make their life a bit better.

        ella’s not just doing that. there doesn’t seem to be a selfish bone in her body.

     the least she could do was get her a hot cup of coffee, to try to stir some semblance of comfort the woman undoubtedly yearns for. maggie doesn’t begin to know ella, but there’s familiarity upon the other’s countenance and she recalls a similar desire from her own childhood: the need to be loved, or the need to escape, and not quite knowing the difference between the two. “ do you think you’re ready to do that? -- to go home. you don’t have to, you know. ”
