The most prominent leaks and rumors were pointing to this phone being an absolute banger of a deal. The spiritual successor to the iPhone SE 3rd generation, this iPhone 16e was rumored to be a mere $499, latest chipset, all-screen design, basically everything important from the iPhone 16, minus some of the extra stuff (no ultra-wide camera, no Dynamic Island, no Camera Control).

Except no. This bumswipe of a product is $599, binned chipset, NO MAGSAFE (which has been around since 2020), NO SENSOR SHIFT STABILIZATION (which has also been around since 2020), and missing software features, all of which were available on the iPhone 14... WHICH THIS PHONE REPLACED!

At this point, I'm just buying an SE 3rd gen or a mini iPhone and waiting till the 16e doesn't have a terrible price.

Reflections: What We See, What We Miss

Yesterday, my light-up mirror arrived—sleek and magnetic, but requiring me to attach the included metal plate for the stand to actually hold it in place. So, I attached the plate, then added a MagSafe Butterfly phone ring so I could hold on to it. Practicality at its finest.

For someone who spent a lifetime avoiding mirrors, this felt different. Then, I did something I hadn’t done in a long time: I really looked—I mean really looked. First order of business? Trimming my unibrow. Second? Facing the reality staring back at me. My double chin has returned, and with it, an unexpected wave of emotions. Tears followed.

In small acts of progress, I skipped the peanut butter crackers this time when ordering groceries—though dark chocolate trail mix still made the cut. A win? Maybe. I was eating both before, after all. Tuna salad kits and turkey sticks also joined the lineup.

Baby steps. Maybe one day, even the crackers from the tuna salad kits go, too.

Even if capitalism were ever overthrown here (unlikely in my lifetime), I don’t believe people’s fixation on conventional beauty would disappear. Sure, a different system might make healthy food more accessible—but it wouldn’t make people blind.
