Ha. After what i said last time, we spent the next 30 or so hours calling direct express over and over again until someone finally picked up the phone - it kept hanging up on me - and was told they couldn't do anything about it, call the bank with the routing number. Okaaaaaay. So i called the bank with the routing number and that was miserable. After three people hanging up on me and not listening to me, finally got someone to listen - and they told me that they would not look into it at all in any way shape or form because i didn't have an account with them. So, i decided to call ssa again. Low and behold, that’s what i shoulda fuckin’ done to begin with god damn. i mean yea sure i called them the first time, but i shoulda just called them back. It took longer for me to go through my spiel than it did for the nice lady to help me. my check is on it’s way to me, paper, because it bounced back to the ssa. i got a new direct express account, and that’s set up for next month so this DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. Argh. But it’s fine. It’s over. It’s over!
...until April when Sir wants to switch me over to a proper bank but we’ll see. We shall see. Here’s hoping that turns out just peachy.
IBS has been kicking my absolute ASS the past day and a half or so, ugh, agonizing gut pain, diarrhea, you name it, i got it. Miserable.
So yea. That’s how my start of the year is turning out. At least it snowed a little... 😩
Food: A Liquid: A Pain: D Brain: D
Tomorrow: Wash 2 plates/bowls/pieces of silverware, 2 chapters, Dailies, Vamp shiz, 2 anime eps.
Ever Onwards and Upwards!

A Broken Magic (Duology) by Devon Monk
VIDEO
We return to the world of magic and politics, as Shame and Terric continue to figure out how to live in a world of stunted magic when they are embodiments of magic. As a fan of the full Allie Beckstrom nine-book series, it was great to finally get back into that world with some of my favorite side characters. (Stone is still my favorite side-character.)
Author: Devon Monk Where to find him: Facebook/Twitter Published: Hell Bent (2013); Stone Cold (2014) Publisher: Roc Publishing Where to purchase: Hell Bent: Amazon/Barnes & Noble/Book Depository/Powells/IndieBound | Stone Cold:  Amazon/Barnes & Noble/Book Depository/Powells/IndieBound
Hell Bent: Instead of the deadly force it once was, magic is now a useless novelty. But not for Shame Flynn and Terric Conley, “breakers” who have the gift for reverting magic back to its full-throttle power. In the magic-dense city of Portland, Oregon, keeping a low profile means keeping their gifts quiet. After three years of dealing with disgruntled magic users, Shame and Terric have had enough of politics, petty magic, and, frankly, each other. It’s time to call it quits.
When the government discovers the breakers’ secret—and its potential as a weapon—Shame and Terric suddenly become wanted men, the only ones who can stop the deadly gift from landing in the wrong hands. If only a pair of those wrong hands didn’t belong to a drop-dead-gorgeous assassin Shame is falling for as if it were the end of the world. And if he gets too close to her, it very well could be….
Stone Cold: Marked by Life and Death magic, Shame Flynn and Terric Conley are “breakers”—those who can use magic to its full extent. Most of the time, they can barely stand each other, but they know they have to work together to defeat a common enemy—rogue magic user Eli Collins.
Backed by the government, Eli is trying to use magic as a weapon by carving spells into the flesh of innocents and turning them into brainless walking bombs. To stop him, Shame and Terric will need to call on their magic, even as it threatens to consume them—because the price they must pay to wield Life and Death could change the very fate of the world…and magic itself.

Title: Unclean Spirit
Author: M.L.N. Hanover
Series: Black Sun’s Daughter
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Rating: 2/5 starts
The Overview: Jayné Heller thinks of herself as a realist, until she discovers reality isn’t quite what she thought it was. When her uncle Eric is murdered, Jayné travels to Denver to settle his estate, only to learn that it’s all hers — and vaster than she ever imagined. And along with properties across the world and an inexhaustible fortune, Eric left her a legacy of a different kind: his unfinished business with a cabal of wizards known as the Invisible College.Led by the ruthless Randolph Coin, the Invisible College harnesses demon spirits for their own ends of power and domination. Jayné finds it difficult to believe magic and demons can even exist, let alone be responsible for the death of her uncle. But Coin sees Eric’s heir as a threat to be eliminated by any means — magical or mundane — so Jayné had better start believing in something to save her own life. -Goodreads
The Review:
After finishing Unclean Spirits, I’d like to lament a few disappointments with a wishlist:
#1: I wish the characters had been developed, not just better, but at all.
#2: I wish the concept of the “unclean spirits” would’ve played a stronger, more direct role in the story.
#3: I wish the plot hadn’t been so simple.
#4: I wish all of the things I’ve come to love about this author had been represented in this novel.
Daniel Abraham (aka MLN Hanover, aka 1/2 of James S. A. Corey) has a pretty solid spot in my top authors list for his Long Price Quartet and Expanse series. I appreciate the subtle beauty of his writing, his interesting story ideas, and (most importantly), the rich characters he creates filled with so much depth they feel like real people (are you all sick of hearing me talk about Avasarala – aka my homegirl?). He’s literally my number one example for how to write amazing characters, so what happened here?
My disappointment in Unclean Spirits was a little more acute due to the lack of all of the essential components I’ve come to associate with this author. I’m actually kind of shocked that it was so sub-par of his usual standard. Minus the profanity, the delivery of this book read very much like a thin YA novel, lacking in any real substance or development (with an insta-lust on top of it all). It was practically a case study in telling vs showing where the characters would spring up feelings, convictions, and even magical talents without any groundwork to show the reader how they got to those points. Because of this I was never invested in the story – almost comatose with impartiality.
The concept of the book (revolving around parasitic “unclean spirits”) was an interesting one, and in fact my only positive takeaway from the book was the scientific discussion about the spirits vs earthen parasites. However, they didn’t play a significant role in the story other than on the periphery. I wanted to see some badass body-hopping and instead I got a big thug possessed by a spirit and lots of speculation and theory.
Overall, the book didn’t give me anything to sink my teeth into and had it been any other author I may have DNFed. It wasn’t the worst urban fantasy I’ve ever read, but it was far from the best.
Series status: I probably will not continue anytime soon (if at all). At least until I knock out the dozen or so other UFs on my TBR. I own this whole series, so we’ll see if it makes it past the next library purge. I admit to being mildly curious if all of the things I was missing develop later in the series because, despite my experience with this first book, I know the brilliance the author is capable of. We’ll see.
Recommendations: This would be a difficult one for me to recommend. If you’re thinking to read because you love the author (as I did), my inclination is to suggest you pass (on this one – everything else by him is superb). If you’re thinking to read this because you like urban fantasy, I wouldn’t say pass, but there are plethora of titles I’d hand you first.

Hey all, Dani here.
I promise that I am trying to up my reading count a bit more so I can start filling my posts again with reviews, but during this slow reading time I am also finding it important to declutter as much as possible.
Oh, and in other news, today my boyfriend, my mom, and I should be making a trip to the local IKEA so I can pick up the bookcases for the library/study in the apartment my boyfriend and I share. So, if all goes well and I get the bookcases assembled and filled with my books, I should be able to have a library tour post up soon. That should be pretty fun.
Okay, so at the start of this sixth TBR purge my list on Goodreads had 732 books on it. Let’s just go ahead and jump into the next 30 books of the list and see how many I can eliminate from my list.
Two Weeks’ Notice by Rachel Caine. I already got rid of the first book, and I was leery of this trilogy anyway, as it is zombie-esque, and I’m not a big zombie fan (with the exception being iZombie) so this is an easy goodbye.
Seraphina by Rachel Hartman. I heard a lot of great buzz surrounding this book when it came out, and it sounded interesting so I added it to the list. At one point I even started to read it and got a few chapters in. But then I put it down and walked away to read other books. I honestly can’t tell you what happened in those early chapters; it didn’t hold my interest. And yes, perhaps giving it another chance would mean me actually finishing it, but right now I just have so many books I really want to read, so I can say farewell to this for now. I do own it in ebook if I ever change my mind.
Steelheart, The Alloy of Law, The Rithmatist, Words of Radiance, and Legion by Brandon Sanderson. I plan to read all things Sanderson at some point (hopefully soonish). Keep.
Forsaken, A Kiss Before the Apocalypse, Dancing on the Head of a Pin, Where Angels Fear to Tread, A Hundred Words for Hate, and In the House of the Wicked by Thomas E. Sniegoski. As I pointed out in an earlier post, I’m just not really in the mood for angelic character novels. At one point I absolutely loved these books–well the YA ones, and was going to try the adult ones but then it just never happened. For now I’m still walking away.
The Old Races: Year of Miracles, The Old Races: Origins, The Old Races: Aftermath, and Mountain Echoes by C.E. Murphy. I loved the Negotiator trilogy, and the Old Races stories go along with those books, expanding the universe and detailing more tales and more beings, so I’m obviously keeping these.
A Raging Storm, A Bloody Storm, Storm Season, and Frozen Heat by Richard Castle. I have tried to read mystery/thriller novels and most of the time I just can’t do it. I tried with these ones since they tied into the show Castle and I loved the show. But now that the show is over, I’m finding my enthusiasm for attempting these books is fading.
Magic Without Mercy, Magic for a Price, and Tin Swift by Devon Monk. I already eliminated the rest of the Allie Beckstrom novels by Devon Monk so it is easy to say goodbye to these as well. However, I did enjoy reading Dead Iron and would like to keep reading on, so for now I will keep Tin Swift on my list.
Frost Burned and Fair Game by Patricia Briggs. Much like the earlier books in both of these series by Patricia Briggs, for now I’m saying farewell for now.
Dark Vow by Shona Husk. When I added this book to the list it sounded interesting and I had planned to get around to it fairly soon. But that never happened, and now my mind is focused on so many of my more recent acquisitions, so it wouldn’t be fair to keep this on the list if I’m just going to keep pushing it aside for other books.
Fool Moon, Grave Peril, and Summer Knight by Jim Butcher. I really enjoy the narrative voice of Harry Dresden, and I’d like to read the whole series, so this is an obvious keep.
Whew, another 17 books cut from the TBR list. That’s pretty good, and if I keep eliminating about half of each section I go through, I should end up with a more manageable reading list (though it will still probably be around 400 books long). I’ll just have to try and be better at working my way through the list instead of continuously getting distracted by new releases.
TBR Purge #6 Hey all, Dani here. I promise that I am trying to up my reading count a bit more so I can start filling my posts again with reviews, but during this slow reading time I am also finding it important to declutter as much as possible.
