Wood top the pile thanks to Earle's double
Shortwood 4 Malmesbury Victoria 1 Hellenic League Division One Chris Earle bagged a brace as early season pacesetters Shortwood United made it three wins from three to top the Hellenic League table, writes Jim Cunneen. Random British Royal tidbits
I'm reading "The Vanity Fair Diaries" by Tina Brown and came across this tidbit:
Tumblr media
Monday May 26, 1986
"We had lunch with the preposterous Princess Michael of Kent, who looked about fifteen hands high in an orange silk wrap dress. She has developed a mad, false laugh and a new Lady Bracknell voice for dealing with inferiors. "Row-eena," she gushed at the cowed debutante she totes around as her "lady in waiting." "where is the Dom Perignon? It was sitting outside but those fooooools have taken it away! Find it!" (Mad false laugh.) "Isn't the service quite diabolical? Do shut the kitchen door, Rowena. I hate to stare into a kitchen!"
From The Vanity Fair Diaries by Tina Brown, p. 199
Princess Michael of Kent, nee' Baroness Marie-Christine Anna Agnes Hedwig Ida von Reibnitz, would have been 41 at the time of this lunch. She was born in the German-occupied Sudetenland in what is now the Czech Republic. Her father, Baron Günther Hubertus von Reibnitz, was a descendant of the ancient Reibnitz family, Silesian landowners, who trace their ancestry back to 1288. He was a Nazi party member and a SS calvary officer during WWII.
Princess Michael's mother was Countess Maria Anna Carolina Franziska Walburga Bernadette Szapary von Muraszombath, Szechysziget und Szapar.  The House of Szapáry is an old and important Hungarian noble family. Members of this family held the title of Imperial Count granted to them on 28 December 1722 by Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor.
Princess Michael's parents divorced n 1948 and she with her mother and eldest brother moved to Rose Bay, Australia. In the early 1960s, she lived with her father on his farm in Mozambique.  She then went from Vienna to London to study History of Fine and Decorative Art at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
She first married an English banker in 1971, but divorced in 1977. Once month after her marriage was annulled by the Pope, she married Prince Michael of Kent, Queen Elizabeth II's first cousin. She has said that Lord Mountbatten played matchmaker.
The lady-in-waiting mentioned in the excerpt is The Hon. Rowena Hawke Leatham Sanders, daughter of the 9th Baron Hawke of Towton.
Tumblr media
The Baron of Towton peerage title was created on 20 May 1776 for the admiral Sir Edward Hawke (of Scarthingwell Hall in the parish of Towton), responsible for a blockade of all French merchant shipping and the grounding of six French ships, and scattering of the rest, at the Battle of Quiberon Bay.
Tumblr media
Rowena Hawke's sister, Annabel, pictured above.
Tumblr media
Rowena's father, Bladen Wilmer Hawke, 9th Baron of Towton, above. He served as a Lord-in-waiting (government whip in the House of Lords from 1953 to 1957 in the Conservative administrations of Churchill, Eden and MacMillan.
Tumblr media
Another of Rowena's sisters, Lavinia, married Nicholas MacLean-Bristol. She became a Justice of the Peace and lives in 15th century Old Breachacha Castle on the Isle of Coll in Scotland. This tower fortress was the stronghold of the MacLean clan. The Isle of Coll was granted to the MacLeans in 1431. There is also a new "castle" on this island, built in 1750, which is available to rent for just £1500 for a party of two for one week.
Tumblr media
Rowena lives at Hankerton Priory, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, and borrowed a page from her sister's notebook, as her home is also available as an Air BNB rental - hosted by Rowena! Perhaps she will tell you stories about her days with Princess Michael if you stay with her?

1831 Thursday 6 October
8 3/4 10 20/..
Ready at 9 5/.. at which hour Fahrenheit 64°. and small rainy morning as it has been since 6 a.m. - rather unlucky - an end I fear to all my walking schemes - breakfast at 9 1/4 to 10 5/.. - saw and spoke to the man the waiter recommended as guide to walk with me - much more like postboy than guide - would not do at all - went to a bookseller's shop close by - Bought Brannon's guide and miniature map of the island and saw a 4to. [quarto] volume of views of his (50 views) at 40/. with text - not dear - ordered a one horse car -
Cameron and George inside with me, and off from West Cowes at 11 20/.. - still raining - a hopeless day - yet better as we proceeded and not rain to wet us tho' our has only a square top over our heads, and all the side curtains undrawn - west and East Cowes with the castle of the latter (Mr. Nash) peeping out from the trees, very pretty - losing sight of these no beauty to Newport about a mile before the town (right) pass the barracks, like a square village of one story brick houses - the 14th. regiment there - a little farther (left) the neat large good looking brick house of industry or, as we in Yorkshire should call it, workhouse for the whole island -
Newport a tolerably good looking town - neat Ionic porticoed town hall with market and shops on the ground floor - goodish looking old gothic church - Charles the 1st's. 2nd daughter Elizabeth who died at Carisbrook castle was buried here - her lead coffin found about 30 years ago - Carisbrook Castle about a mile beyond Newport - drove up the hill to the castle gate or heavy wooden door of the time of Edward 3 and therefore said to be about 500 years old - 3/4 hour there - mount 40 steps up to the Keep tower said to have been built by the Romans - a well at the top said to be 300 feet deep, covered over for fear of accident - very fine view - Carisbrook (Cary's brook) a picturesque little town at one part Newport and its river medina (medeena) the town-like barracks, looking very well - could have seen portsmouth and Spithead -, and the tower of Xst.chch. [Christchurch] church but too hazy and very windy - the inside of the tower grown round with the most magnificent tree-like ivy I ever saw - Lord Bolton the late governor laid out a great deal of money on the castle planted the trees, and shut it up - it was open to the public before who did much damage - Lord B- [Bolton] had thought of making a gallery from one of the house windows (he lived in it) to the Keep Tower - would have spoilt the look - Lord Malmesbury present governor £1200 a year and a lieutenant governor at 20/. a day - the tilting ground taken in by queen Elizabeth and converted into a bowling green for Charles 1st. when prisoner here is now turned to an archery ground and the archers dine in the great dining room now only used for this purpose - the duchess of Kent and princess Victoria at the last meeting - Miss Ward whose father had so much property in the island and whose brother is M.P. for the city of London won the last prize - the best lady archer here as at Southampton (at Southampton ladies bows 30lb. [pound] for 50 yards gents. [gentlemens] 50lbs [pounds] for 80 yards) -
Tumblr media
Carisbrooke Castle [Image Source]
A farm of 300 or 400 acres belonging to the castle and some forest land - have planted some of the latter with firs - say oaks will not grow - the castle yard small and rather choked up with building - saw lamp let down to the water's surface of the fine old Roman well 300 feet deep - cut thro' solid rock at about ten or 12 yards from the surface of the castle yard - 90 feet deep of water - saw the poor ass turn the wheel - this one 3 or 4 yards [sic] old - much trouble to teach it - the last about above 40 years old - the window from which Charles tried to escape is stone mullioned in 3 divisions above and 3 below each division having 3 iron stauncheons - this suite of rooms quite gone - saw the little white wainscotted room in which the princess Elizabeth Stuart died - the 2 little round towers in advance of the great entrance gate the most perfect part of the remain -
Old looking gothic church at Carisbrook - from the hill above the town (on our road to Freshwater gate Inn) very fine view of the castle - narrow good downy road - at least, down for the most part and 1 or 2 farm houses left right and fields and very thinly scattered farmhouses and cottages were on the right - not much wood to be seen save once or twice round gentlemens seats - distant views of Newtown and Yarmouth and the sea (right) -
The village of Freshwater merely a few scattered cottages and farm houses - the neat little picturesque Inn 1 1/2 mile off close on the sea at Freshwater bay - a bold high perpendicular chalk recess in the cliffs - from here to the needles a very fine bold range of chalk cliffs - went into the 2 caverns close by here which can be entered at low water a fine arch in the cliff, but caverns of no great extent -
Then took George and off at 4 and in an hour walked over the down (3 miles) to the Lighthouse -  a circular 2 story high round tower - 10 fixed reflecting lights - burn 500 gallons oil a year - the people man and his wife and 6 children have 20/. a week and coals and house found them - much sitting up at night - lamps must be trimmed every 3 hours in winter -
Tumblr media
Lighthouse at Freshwater [Image Source]
The woman went down with me to the needles point (3 needles) - the little bay (left i.e. south) that looked like a fantenil from Hengistbury or Xst.chch. [Christchurch] head is Scratsell Scratchell's bay at the bottom of which the cavern not so large, the woman said, as the cavern at Freshwater gate in Freshwater bay and she had been in both - was in the former in August last - could only be entered in a boat when the water was very smooth - It is in this bay that the sea gulls build in such numbers and the men are let down by ropes to get the eggs - the Eider duck too comes here, and the men seek the down - the bay on the right north is alum bay - very pretty little bay - the western half precipitous white chalk the Eastern half streaked all colours with coal, clay, pink sand, etc. etc.
Tumblr media
The Needles at Freshwater [Image Source]
35 mins. [minutes] at lighthouse and looking about and back again at the Inn in 8 mins. [minutes] under the hour at 6 27/.. - tea at 7 - settled accounts - wrote the above of today till 9 1/2 -
[Margin] Rainy day till about 1 1/4 afterwards pretty fine - very high wind on the down this evening - Fahrenheit 66°. now at 9 1/2 p.m. at which hour went to my room -

RIBA confirms 2021 and 2022 UK Awards programme plans
Friday 27th of November 2020 – The RIBA has today announced that the next call for UK awards entries will be next year – for the 2022 RIBA Awards.
The 2021 RIBA UK Awards (including Regional, National and the RIBA Stirling Prize) will be selected from the shortlist for the 2020 RIBA Regional, RIAS, and RSAW Awards.
The RIBA will continue to build on its rigorous eligibility and judging criteria, and, from the 2022 RIBA Awards, will require all project entries to have been in use for one year. This change will enable judges to assess projects with even more detail on their performance, more extensive client feedback, and a better understanding of how the project functions within its civic, communal and environmental context. It will also add greater focus to the sustainability criteria – further aligning them with the standards set out in the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge.
RIBA President Alan Jones said: “I am pleased that the 2021 RIBA UK Awards will focus on judging and celebrating the exceptional projects that we were unable to visit this year. Not only is this the fairest outcome – reached after detailed consultation with entrants and jurors – but it provides an unexpected opportunity for us to bring forward plans to significantly refresh our judging criteria – with projects having to be in use for one year. The RIBA and our members are committed to the best, sustainable design that will serve generations to come, and I am pleased that from 2022 we will be able to further demonstrate this through our awards programme.”

RIBA president Jane Duncan said,
“The lack of high-quality new housing is a huge issue in the UK so I am particularly pleased to see great examples of well-designed, sustainable new homes amongst our award winners,” she added.
“We all deserve a well-designed, affordable home, wherever we live in the country. I encourage other local authorities, developers and clients to look at these projects as exemplars.”
She praised the inclusion of a number of high-quality schools – including The Laboratory at Dulwich College and new music facilities at Wells Cathedral School – but said it was disappointing to see no new state school buildings included in this year’s awards.
“Well-designed schools support improved student achievement, and staff and student wellbeing and should be part of educational aspirations for all our schools, not just those in the fee-paying sector,” she said.

Jan Smuts ( Jan Christiaan Smuts ) - południowoafrykański polityk, filozof i wojskowy. Premier Związku Południowej Afryki w latach 1919–1924 oraz 1939–1948. W czasie I i II wojny światowej służył w Armii Brytyjskiej w stopniu marszałka polnego. Miał trzech braci i dwie siostry. W 1891 ukończył uczelnię z dyplomami pierwszej klasy, z literatury i fizyki. Następnie uzyskał stypendium Ebdena i wyjechał do Europy, aby studiować prawo w Christ’s College na Uniwersytecie w Cambridge. Studia ukończył w 1893, uzyskując wcześniej wiele nagród akademickich. W 1894 rozpoczął praktykę adwokacką w Middle Temple. W czerwcu 1895 Smuts wrócił do Kolonii Przylądkowej. Smuts objął teki ministra kolonii i edukacji. Wywołało to niezadowolenie w szeregach Partii Narodowej.

RIBA reveals the best of British architecture for 2017
The Royal Institute of British Architects has named 49 winners of its national awards, ranging from a cluster of luxury townhouses, to a new wing for the Tate Modern museum and workshops for the National Arboretum.
The 2017 RIBA National Awards for architecture recognises the best buildings created in the last 12 months.
A shortlist for the prestigious Stirling Prize will be selected from this year's diverse list, which showcases the breadth and scale of projects across the UK – from housing to shopping centres and spaces for worship.
Maggie’s at the Robert Parfett; Manchester, England, by Foster + Partners
"RIBA National Awards provide insight into emerging design trends, as well as showing how well the profession responds to economic drivers. I am delighted to see such confident, innovative and ambitious architecture delivered in such challenging times," said RIBA president Jane Duncan.
"The lack of high-quality new housing is a huge issue in the UK so I am particularly pleased to see great examples of well-designed, sustainable new homes amongst our award winners," she added.
"We all deserve a well-designed, affordable home, wherever we live in the country. I encourage other local authorities, developers and clients to look at these projects as exemplars."
Walmer Yard; London, England, by P Salter and Associates
She praised the inclusion of a number of high-quality schools – including The Laboratory at Dulwich College and new music facilities at Wells Cathedral School – but said it was disappointing to see no new state school buildings included in this year’s awards.
“Well-designed schools support improved student achievement, and staff and student wellbeing and should be part of educational aspirations for all our schools, not just those in the fee-paying sector,” she said.
Also among this year's winners is the visitor attraction British Airways i360, which was designed by Marks Barfield Architects for the Brighton seafront, and the Victoria Gate shopping centre in Leeds with its striking geometric-patterned facade.
A pair of timber-framed buildings for the National Arboretum in Gloucestershire designed using only felled branches from the site were given a nod.
British Airways i360; Brighton, England, by Marks Barfield Architects
Wilkinson Eyre's new additions to the Dyson Campus in Wiltshire is also recognised. The trio of buildings housing new research and design facilities, as well as a cafe and multi-purpose sports centre feature mirrored glass facades.
The striking brick extension of the Tate Modern Switch House by Herzog & de Meuron also gets a mention.
"Brick remains the top choice for many projects in London; Tate Modern's Blavatnik Building and Barrett's Grove are two excellent examples," said Duncan, but pointed out that timber has grown in popularity across the rest of the country. "Traditional building material remains very much part of modern London's architectural vernacular."

My ‘positive’ this week is double edged. The upside was that I discovered I am now eligible for up to a third off the cost of rail travel. The downside is it’s because of my age. As I reached the 'magic', 60 last July I am now entitled, for a small fee, to a rail card. If only I had realised at the time! I reckon I would already have saved that fee several times over given the number of train journeys I’ve taken since then. There have been several journeys to and from London, as well as trips to Bath, Newcastle and Bristol. I might have even saved money while travelling on Spanish trains last month. At least I can make good use of my card when booking my next trip. To London in early November for a Samuel Pepys themed, pub-crawl with Sarah Watson and some close friends.
I’ve always enjoyed travelling by train. It’s partly because train travel did not afflict me in my younger days with the travel sickness experienced whenever I travelled by car or bus. Many such journeys found me, head in hands as waves of nausea churned my stomach while more than once there was an unhappy and messy outcome.
Travel sickness ran in the family. My mother also suffered badly as did the family dog. In preparation for a coach journey from our home in the northeast to Whitby, my mother decided to get something from the vet to settle the dog's stomach for the trip. Unfortunately, she confused her travel sickness pill with that of the dogs. Thankfully, neither came to harm through the switch. In fact, both slept for most of the journey.
While I have never experienced the glamour of travelling on the Orient Express across Europe, I have enjoyed travelling in Edwardian splendour in the UK. Sarah and I indulged ourselves some years ago with a day trip, dressed in all our finery, in an old style Pullman. Riding in a richly decorated private compartment, we trundled through the Kent and Sussex countryside enjoying a five-course breakfast washed down with Bucks Fizz. Later in the day and after a short but memorable trip to Battle the leisurely return journey involved a 7-course dinner with wine, wine and a bit more wine. Mellow would be the word to describe Sarah and me as we left Victoria train station in search of our much-needed hotel for the night.
On another occasion, when on a holiday near Lake Maggiore, I decided to take the ‘Express’ into the Swiss / Italian Alps. The journey offered magnificent views of snow covered mountain peaks while far below lay winding valleys. Although one did not focus on the fact that the rail tracks, on which the train ran, were seemingly clinging to the sides of the mountains through which we climbed.
This weekend again brings me some train travel. To Winchester and the BBC History weekend listening to a series of lectures on such topics as Thomas More, The Tudors, The Norman Conquest, Richard III and The Great War. Not everyone’s cup of tea I know, but having very much enjoyed last year’s event in Malmesbury it was a case of me wanting history to repeat itself!
Have a good one all …
