I need to sob over my own symbolism hope this helps okay basically its incredibly common for heiresses/fuchsias to have pointy looking signs like in a fork formation but pennsus looks like <=> this (a diamond/box) a lot of it symbolizes how she's trapped within the walls her own bloods put on her and untomi technically doesnt have a sign (but usually draws a blocky fish with x's through it if she has to sign stuff) which is to symbolize the fact shes literally denied and hates her own blood because of what it ended up doing for her (trapped underground bc she wasnt suppose to be "born" etc etc) Theres a whole thing around that where like. The empress gets any Extra fuchsias killed off but bc justki interupted the cycle of it all by creating pennsu to replace them she(untomi) ended up in the care of the system for a bit and then they got the clear for the classic government experiments bc they wanted to see how far a fuchsia could Go before she ended up killed off too And justki who is a trueborn fuchsia does have the symbol thats forkish. But its upside down as a last act of rebellion (also coming up w a whole new sign to put into the system is hard work. Bammy was the one who helped pennsu pick out one)

but you know out of everyone in the main caste who Also has a fork like sign? Marane. Whos treated like a heiress because they want to use her to get an old dead god back. and she cant do anything abt it which is why her signs also a circle.... She feels like shes trapped in a loop

in my most recent art post with Marane she has much puffier sleeves then before and theyve got 8 fluffed out bits to mimic an octopus (Pennsus lusus) which completely doubles down on the fact the government on Veteres treats Marane like a heiress more then Pennsu who is the actual heiress.... as if she didnt have enough imposter syndrome :nintensive:

On the otherside Marane is so caught up in her grief of losing one of the most consistent people in her life. This isnt a complaint about Nenzie not being enough or anything, theyre plenty. But you cant replace people in your life especially the ones that were always around for you. You tend to notice when 1 of the 3 chairs around your kitchen table is glaringly empty. And yet it will continue to be empty. People will come and go sure but... That was his spot
