17-pound meteorite discovered in Antarctica Antarctica is a tough place to work, for obvious reasons—it's bitterly cold, remote, and wild. However, it's one of the best places in the world to hunt for meteorites. That's partly because Antarctica is a desert, and its dry climate limits the degree of weathering the meteorites experience. On top of the dry conditions, the landscape is ideal for meteorite hunting: the black space rocks stand out clearly against snowy fields. Even when meteorites sink into the ice, the glaciers' churning motion against the rock below helps re-expose the meteorites near the surface of the continent's blue ice fields. An international team of researchers who just got back from Antarctica can attest to the continent's meteorite-hunter-friendliness: they returned with five new meteorites, including one that weighs 16.7 pounds (7.6 kg). Maria Valdes, a research scientist at the Field Museum and the University of Chicago, estimates that of the roughly 45,000 meteorites retrieved from Antarctica over the past century, only about a hundred or so are this size or larger. "Size doesn't necessarily matter when it comes to meteorites, and even tiny micrometeorites can be incredibly scientifically valuable," says Valdes, "but of course, finding a big meteorite like this one is rare, and really exciting." Valdes was one of four scientists on the mission, led by Vinciane Debaille of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (FNRS-ULB); the research team was rounded out by Maria Schönbächler (ETH-Zurich) and Ryoga Maeda (VUB-ULB). The researchers were the first to explore potential new meteorite sites mapped using satellite imagery by Veronica Tollenaar, a thesis student in glaciology at the ULB. "Going on an adventure exploring unknown areas is exciting," says Debaille, "but we also had to deal with the fact that the reality on the ground is much more difficult than the beauty of satellite images." Despite timing their trip for Antarctica's summertime in late December, temperatures hovered around 14° F (-10° C). Valdes notes that some days during their trip, it was actually colder in Chicago than it was in Antarctica, but spending days riding snowmobiles and trekking through ice fields and then sleeping in a tent made the Antarctic weather feel more extreme. The five meteorites recovered by the team will be analyzed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences; meanwhile, sediment potentially containing tiny micrometeorites was divided among the researchers for study at their institutions. Valdes says she's eager to see what the analyses of the meteorites reveal, because "studying meteorites helps us better understand our place in the universe. The bigger a sample size we have of meteorites, the better we can understand our Solar System, and the better we can understand ourselves."

Tuason Connection
The Tuasons were the only Chinese family in the Philippines granted with patents of nobility by a Spanish monarch.
Doña Teresa de la Paz de Legarda (born October 15, 1841 in Marikina, Manila, Philippines, died April 22, 1890 at 48 in Marikina, Manila, Philippines of Pneumonia) once owned the largest private hacienda in the Philippines in the 1800s and is the ancestor of the Tuason-Legarda-Prieto-Valdes Clan of Manila, Philippines. She was first married to Don Jose Severo Tuason, the son of Don Jose Maria Tuason and Doña Maria Jose Patiño y Tuason.
Doña Teresa’s second husband was Don Benito Legarda y Tuason, a third cousin of Don Jose Severo. The Tuasons descended from an 18th-century Chinese trader, Son Tua (later changed to Tuason). During the British occupation, Son Tua aided the Spaniards in fighting off the British and was awarded land and a noble title.

Brazil discovers Pan American gold in the ring and on the beach.
Tumblr media
Brazil discovers Pan American gold in the ring and on the beach. As the first week of competition in cold Santiago came to a conclusion on Friday, the United States gold rush also ended, and Brazilians punched and spiked their way to Pan American Games gold. Beach volleyball is regarded as a national sport in Brazil, where the top-ranked men's and women's teams, Andre Stein and George Souto, and Patricia Ramos and Duda Lisboa, respectively, returned home with both titles after putting on impressive performances beneath the cloud-covered Andes mountains. Brazilian boxers, led by twice-world champion and Olympic silver medallist Beatriz Ferreira, were amassing 12 medals, including four gold, on the opposite side of the capital of Chile. Prior to losing to the United States two weeks earlier, Ramos and Lisboa were world champions in 2022. They were once again victorious, defeating Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson of Canada 2-0. In women's beach volleyball, the silver was Canada's first medal at a Pan American Games. The two teams, who included world winners, played at the high caliber anticipated in a close final (22–20, 22–18). After needing three sets to defeat Jorge Alayo and Noslen Diaz of Cuba, Andre Loyola and George Souto had to put in a little more time and effort into the chilly evening in order to clinch the golden double. Beach volleyball players Marco and Esteban Grimalt, two of Chile's most well-known athletes, were unable to hold onto the gold medal they won in Lima four years prior, but the cousins triumphed 2-1 over American players Logan Webber and Hagen Smith to win a bronze medal that thrilled the boisterous crowd waving flags. Olympic tickets were punched and thirteen gold medals were awarded on a hectic day in the boxing arena. With every fighter in the finals having guaranteed a quota position for the Olympics in Paris, winning a silver medal came with an added benefit. The first Brazilian woman to win gold was Ferreira, who defeated Colombia's Angie Paola Valdes Pana 5-0 to win the women's 60 kilogram title. On the other hand, the top three finishers were Jucielen Romeu (57 kg), Barbara Maria Dos Santos (66 kg), and Caroline Barbosa (50 kg). Cuba, a boxing powerhouse, only managed two gold medals; double Olympic champion Julio Cesar La Cruz won the men's 92kg final, while Arlen Lopez Cardona won the 80kg weight class. Both the US and Canada had two champions: Joshua Edwards of the US won the super heavyweight (+92 kg) title, while Jahmal Harvey of Canada won the 57 kg title. In the 75-kilogram women's division, Tammara Thibeault of Canada won 5-0 to add Pan American gold to her world and Commonwealth Games wins. The winner was Atheyna Bylon of Panama. Wyatt Sanford triumphed for Canada as well, winning gold in the 63.5 kg weight division. "Out of all the tournaments I've been to, I've been able to capture gold and I was missing Pan Ams," Thibeault stated. "Now missing the Olympics, but hopefully we're on the right path and that's what we're going to get." Emiliano Hernandez and Duilio Carrillo won the men's relay to help Mexico maintain their dominance in the modern pentathlon, taking home all five gold medals available in Chile. With 35 gold and 80 overall medals, such contribution helped propel Mexico into second position on the medal tally. The United States led the field with 61 gold and 152 total after amassing 59 gold in the first five days of competition. Despite this, they have only added two more gold since then. Crucem Christi extendit»187. Hoc in loco, Roma adhuc lacessit post mutationes visuales a Rossellini formatas, cum eventu penultimo Paisà (1947.)

amo tu toto code (I love you with all my heart)
latin version
written by me and @killsyouviolently
Mihi nomen est Shadow. Ego ericius sum. Ego sum gladiator. Ego modice parvus sum. Optimus gladiator in Pompeii sum. Omnes gladiatores (me excepto) pugnant infirme. Praeter unum.
Competitorus Sonicum. Sonicus quoque est ericius. Sonicus habet caeruleas spinas. Sonicus quoque gladitor est. Amo Sonicum, sed, nolo amare Sonicum. Volo Sonicum esse amicum, neque competitorem. Sonicus valde bonus gladitor.
Mons vesuvius iam videtur bonus.
Est hora octava ante meridiem. Ego in domo, animum relaxo, quando subito— terra valde tremet! Ego vexatus sum. Specto atram nubem in Montem Vesuvium. Certe Pompeii in chaos iam.
Forum videtur… tristis. “Sonice!” clamo, sed non video Sonicum. Sum maxime anxius. Curro ad amphitheatrum. “Sonice! Sonice!” clamo iterum, et iterum, et iterum. Subito— “Shadow?” Audire Sonicum! “Sonice! Ubi es?”, videre omnes. “Shadow! Auxilium fer!” Subito, video caeruleum— Sonicus caeruleus est! Currens eo Sonicum, sed, amphitheatrum cadit in Sonicum. “Non… Sonice…” fio anxissimus. “Non anxius, Shadow.” Sonicus capit meam manum. Ego fero collumnam, et destruo collumnam. Sed… video sanguinem Sonici. “S-Sonice—” “Non mortuum shadow. Omne bonum, quod tu hic es.” Sum… attonitus. “Sonice… valde te amo.” … silentium. Subito… “Shadow… quoque te amo.” Sum attonitus. Valde attonitus. Subito, basium ei do. Tollo Sonicum, et curro ad solem occidentem.

New technique to determine age will open new era of planetary science The coming decade is expected to bring a veritable bonanza for the science of planets: space missions are scheduled to bring back samples of rock from the moon, Mars, the Martian moon of Phobos, and a primitive asteroid. And scientists say there is a new technique for determining the age of rocks, meteorites, and even artifacts, that could help open up a new era of discovery. A group with the University of Chicago and the Field Museum of Natural History tested an instrument made by Thermo Fisher Scientific on a piece of a Martian meteorite nicknamed "Black Beauty" and were able to quickly and precisely date it by probing it with a tiny laser beam—a significant improvement over past techniques, which involved far more work and destroyed parts of the sample. Their research is published in the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry. "We are very excited by this demonstration study, as we think that we will be able to employ the same approach to date rocks that will be returned by multiple space missions in the future," said Nicolas Dauphas, the Louis Block Professor of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago and first author on a study laying out the results. "The next decade is going to be mind-blowing in terms of planetary exploration." Rock of ages Scientists have been using isotopes to estimate the ages of specimens for more than a century. This method takes advantage of the fact that certain types of elements are unstable and will slowly turn into other types at a slow, predictable rate. In this case, scientists tap the fact that rubidium-87 will change into strontium-87—so the older the rock is, the more strontium-87 it will have. Rubidium dating can be used to determine the ages of rocks and objects that are billions of years old; it is widely used to understand how the moon, Earth, and solar system formed, to understand the magma plumbing system beneath volcanoes, and to trace human migration and trades in archaeology. Previously, however, the way to make this measurement would take weeks—and it would destroy part of the sample. To perform those tests with the conventional method, "you take your piece of rock, crush it with a hammer, dissolve the minerals with chemicals and use a special ultra-clean laboratory to process them, and then take it to a mass spectrometer to measure the isotopes," explained study co-author Maria Valdes, a postdoctoral researcher in the Robert A. Pritzker Center for Meteoritics and Polar Studies at the Field Museum of Natural History. But Thermo Fisher Scientific developed a new machine that promised to significantly cut the time, toxicity, and amount of sample destroyed in the process. It uses a laser to vaporize a tiny portion of the sample—the hole created is the size of a single human hair—and then analyzes the rubidium and strontium atoms with a mass spectrometer that uses new technological advances to cleanly measure strontium isotopes. Dauphas, Valdes, and several other collaborators wanted to test out the new technique—and they had a perfect candidate: a piece of meteorite that landed on Earth from Mars. This particular meteorite is nicknamed Black Beauty for its gorgeous dark color. It is flecked with lighter fragments that represent even older rocks imbedded in the rock. However, these fragments were rolled up into another rock at some point much later during Mars' history. It's a bit like when you're baking cookies, explained Valdes; the chocolate chips and nuts were made at different times and places, but all the components come together when you bake the cookie. Scientists want to know the ages of all of these steps along the way, because the composition of each set tells them about what the conditions were like on Mars at the time, including the makeup of the atmosphere and the volcanic activity on the surface. They can use this information to piece together a timeline of Mars. However, thus far, parts of the story were disputed; different studies had returned different answers for the age when all the components of Black Beauty came together and formed one rock—so the scientists thought the meteorite would be a perfect candidate to test the capabilities of the new technique. They took a sample of Black Beauty to Germany to try it out. In a matter of hours rather than weeks, the instrument returned its answer: 2.2 billion years old. The team thinks this represents the time when it coalesced into its final form. What's more, to perform the test, the scientists were able to place the entire meteorite chunk in the machine and then precisely select a tiny site to test the age. "This was a particularly good tool to solve this controversy," said Dauphas. "When you chip out a piece of rock to test the old way, it's possible you are getting other fragments mixed in, which may affect your results. We do not have that problem with the new machine." The technique could be extremely useful in many fields, but Dauphas and Valdes are particularly interested in it for understanding everything from the history of water on Mars' surface to how the solar system itself formed. In the next decade, scientists are expecting a bonanza of new samples from places other than Earth. The U.S. and China are planning new missions to the moon; a missions to intercept an asteroid called Bennu will land in 2023 with payloads of dirt scooped from its surface; another mission will bring back samples from Mars' moon Phobos in 2027; and by the early 2030s, NASA hopes to bring back samples that the Perseverance rover is now collecting on Mars. With all of these samples, scientists expect to learn much more about the planets and asteroids around us. "This is a huge advance," Dauphas said. "There are many precious meteorites and artifacts that you don't want to destroy. This allows you to tremendously minimize the impact you have during your analysis."

Apo Whang-Od is considered the country's oldest mambabatok. Credit: Artu Nepomuceno/Vogue Philippines
A 106-Year-Old From The Philippines Is Vogue's Oldest Ever Cover Model!
Vogue Philippines has revealed Apo Whang-Od as the cover star of its April 2023 Issue, a move that makes the 106-Year-Old Tattoo Artist from the Philippines The Oldest Person Ever To Appear on the Front of Vogue.
Whang-Od — also known as Maria Oggay — has been perfecting the art of hand-tapping tattoos since she was a teen, learning under her father's instruction.
Residing in the mountain village of Buscalan, about 15 hours north of Manila, in Kalinga province, she is considered the country's oldest mambabatok — or traditional Kalinga tattooist.
Once, the hand-tapped tattoos that Whang-Od creates using just a bamboo stick, a thorn from a pomelo tree, water and coal, were earned by indigenous Butbut warriors.
Now, international visitors seeking her signature geometric designs make up much of her clientele.
"Heralded as the last mambabatok of her generation, she has imprinted the symbols of the Kalinga tribe—signifying strength, bravery, and beauty—on the skin of thousands of people who have made the pilgrimage to Buscalan," Vogue Philippines said in a post on social media.
The art can only be passed down to blood relatives, and Whang Od has been training her grandnieces Elyang Wigan and Grace Palicas for several years.
"(My friends who gave tattoos) have all passed away," Whang Od told CNN Travel in 2017.
"I'm the only one left alive that's still giving tattoos. But I'm not afraid that the tradition will end because (I'm training) the next tattoo masters."
"The tradition will continue as long as people keep coming to get tattoos," she added.
"As long as I can see well, I will keep giving tattoos. I'll stop once my vision gets blurry."
Vogue Philippines editor-in-chief Bea Valdes said staff at the publication decided unanimously that Whang-Od should go on the cover. "We felt she represented our ideals of what is beautiful about our Filipino culture.
"We believe that the concept of beauty needs to evolve, and include diverse and inclusive faces and forms. What we hope to speak about is the beauty of humanity," Valdes added.
Prior to Whang-Od's appearance in Vogue Philippines, the record for oldest Vogue cover model was held by actress Judi Dench, who appeared on the front of British Vogue in 2020, at the age of 85. Kate Springer contributed reporting.
